Hi I am almost two weeks post op for a gastric bypass and have woken up with awful hives all over me. So irritating. I think I was allergic to the dressings but wonder if anyone else has had this? I also have woken up with I lump like feeling in my chest, a bit like when you have eaten too much but I obviously haven’t as I’m still on liquids and it started before I have even drunk anything. Any ideas? Thanks 😀
  2. 4 weeks out tomorrow and saw my nutritionist last Thursday she cleared me to go from purée to soft. It broke my stall and today I am 197.7!! I am still not hitting 1200 calories but I know when I’m full now unlike liquid and purée stage. I had real chicken cooked super soft yesterday and it was so amazing I felt human agin! I’m still eating cottage cheese but I didn’t purée it and I’m not sure when I’ll eat tuna again blah had enough! She also cleared me to eat white potatoes which I usually eat sweet potatoes but the store was out of them. So I had a small Yukon Gold potatoe (no skin) with a very small amount of organic grass fed butter (like real small 1/4 of a teaspoon) and about 1/2 of low fat sour cream topped with some fiesta shredded cheese for added Protein. I ate about 3/4 of it and was super full of course I didn’t eat the skin and I actually pushed off most of the sour cream it was just to much for me. But it was super yummy! Also I am up to 3 miles a day walking.  SW 227 Todays weight 197.7 VSG 12/22/2021
  3. 18 years... I don't count anything but meals of which I try to eat three per day. Meals are pretty much what they've always been since surgery: protein at about 3-4 oz and veggies/other an ounce or so. I don't measure, it's all just habit now. I rarely eat snacks. My weight stays fairly consistent where it has been for the last 15(?) years, which is a bit lower than my original super-wish goal. I couldn't even entertain the possibility I would be where I am now. My mental image of myself is beginning to sync with my physical self which is a weird sensation after all this time. Good luck, Tek

pretty much all insurance companies have those same requirements, and most of us were approved as long as we met the BMI requirements (which are typically BMI over 35 with two comorbidities, or BMI over 40 with no comorbidities. they're looking for whether or not you've tried things in the past that haven't worked. And with the six-month professionally-supervised diet that many companies require before your final approval, they're looking to see if you're able to stick to a program long-term. I lost 57 lbs before I had surgery (between the six-month professionally-supervised diet that my insurance required - and the two week pre-op liquid diet that my surgeon required). I was approved. I was worried they'd say since I lost weight on my own, I didn't need surgery - but that wasn't it. They wanted to see how committed I was to a program.

    Not losing anything??

Ugh, this is been the 3rd almost 4th seek. Almost 4 weeks ago i lost like 3 pounds and then it stalled. Sent from my SM-N986U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. Cheated on pre op diet and surgery is next week can anyone tell me what to do
  7. Because of my issues with nausea and acid reflux I had to sleep sitting up for almost 3 weeks. I soon realised it made getting out of bed easier as I didnt have to haul myself out of bed, just scuttle on my bottom to the edge and drop my legs down. I never had a minutes pain or needed pain meds. I wonder if by default I helped my recovery? I also have a wonderful husband who let me get better in my own time and gave me so much encouragement. Still I doubted that it was the right choice, I had 6 weeks of miserable sickness and nausea, then tada, as if by magic, I can eat and drink and feel like a member of the human race again. Take your time to heal and recover x You will love your sleeve pretty soon x
  8. I hover around 1,000 calories a day with around 70 g protein and at least 64 oz water daily. I just started going to the gym again six weeks ago, so I get 90 minutes of cardio daily. I'm losing . . . .SLOWLY . . .

    Cheated on my pre op

Every one who had to do a pre op diet sympathises with you. It sucks. After the 4th day it would have been easier to stick to the pre op diet, its such a shame you caved in. Surround yourself with low cal snacks and focus on why you are doing this. I had to do 3 weeks too and it just showed me how to break with my food addiction. There are a couple of people who got surgery refused in the back pages of the forum but lots of people who got away with it. Try and keep with the restricted program, it will be less stress for you in the long run. Good luck

    Not losing anything??

Yes, the infamous Week 3 Stall can last several weeks, sorry to have to tell you that but it's true. Get that water in, sip, sip, sip all day long and keep running to the bathroom if you have to (more steps!/exercise!) but stay focused and try not to get discouraged and it'll all start moving again when your body is ready. I promise.

    Cheated on my pre op

Yeh you should be fine as long as you don't go crazy with cheating. Make sure you're 90% on the plan, some slip ups are expected. And you still got 2 more weeks. So you should be fine. I was on 2 weeks of pre-Op and I had cheated a few times and I had gastric bypass. But since you're told to do 3 weeks, your BMI may be on the higher side. So for your own surgery and it's safety, try your best to stick to your pre-Op diet. Good Luck and don't beat yourself up. Just pick up from now and make sure you give your best. 😊
  12. Anyone cheated on the pre op and everything was still ok for the go ahead of surgery? I got told I need to do a 3 week pre op diet , eat anything I want aslong as it’s within 800-900 calories. First 4 days went great but slipped up last night and cheated. still got 2 weeks and 2 days until my gastric sleeve surgery, do you think this will effect anything? Or if I stick to it 100% from now I should be okay? I know I shouldn’t of cheated but I’m only human

    Anthem BCBS, Illinois

Hello, all. A bit nervous with my first post. It's been less than a week since I got a new general practitioner (the previous one retired) and formally raised the idea of (probably) gastric bypass surgery. I haven't done any of the consultations, finding a surgeon, etc, that's all in the future. But one thing I can worry about and start to plan for in the present is insurance. I am in Illinois and have Anthem BCBS. Something I see listed on their requirement is: Past participation in a weight loss program; and Inadequate weight loss despite a committed attempt at conservative medical therapy (for example, comprehensive lifestyle interventions, including a combination of diet, exercise, and behavioral modifications); and Anyone have any experience with that, or with Anthem BCBS? Because to my skeptical eye that just looks like a catch-22 way to deny the claim: "Oh, you lost weight? Don't need surgery, then, do you? Oh, you didn't lose weight? Not committed, I guess. Tough luck, though."

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello! Long time lurker, first reply. I’m going to be sleeved on 2/28. I had my EGD this week, small hernia found that will need to be fixed. I have a few more preop appointments next week. I started adapting to my new lifestyle months ago so slowly, so I’m ready, I started at 330 in July. I’m at 303 today. I don’t know how to put my finger on it but all my attempts at weight loss did not feel like this. I think I’m just over all the limitations I have. I have advanced osteoarthritis and I’m just sick of not being able to get around. I’m in Atlanta Georgia. love this forum it has helped me tremendously.

    Post Op Rants!!

I stalled every second week during my first two months post surgery. Frustrating? Yeah, but also totally normal. I was barely consuming 700 calories a day, and we're convinced that that MUST mean we lose weight. How can so few calories result in a stall and weird weight fluctuations, right? Well, the body responds to a prolonged and severe calorie reduction and post-op stress by stalling. It's a normal response, and our poor bodies have a lot of rewiring and adjusting to do after enduring major surgical changes. When I was finally able to eat more and up my calories to around 900 to 1200 a day ... the stalling stopped. I've now been fairly consistently losing, and feel like, after two months of modest weight loss, I've finally hit my "honeymoon period" (which everyone seemed to talk about but I was beginning to think wasn't going to happen for me). So stalls do break. Some go on for 3 weeks or even a bit over that. Others, like me, had them with mind numbing frequency. They're normal, and while it may seem counter-intuitive, super-low calorie intake often causes them.
  16. I had a sleeve to bypass revision 7 weeks ago. I can only eat about 1 oz of food at a time. I've tried three different protein shakes, they all literally make me sick after about 1/4 of the shake. I can feel it churning and gurgling in my chest. I can't get my protein in with just food. I am not getting all my supplements taken, it's like eating a meal taking the big calcium pills. I really am frustrated. I need to weigh or measure everything I put in my mouth, which is fine. I was severely dehydrated last weekend. I should have gone to the ER but the wait time is up to 10 hours. I knew I wasn't drinking enough. I didn't know how to prioritize supplements, protein and drinking. My skin was very dry, my lips stayed chapped for two weeks prior to the sudden onset of uncontrollable vomiting and an instant pounding headache. Not a migraine but a headache that I couldn't get rid of. That was Saturday a week ago. I talked to my surgeon in Dallas Sunday. He wasn't to make sure my abdomen wasn't hurting. He said if I started running a fever 100 or above get to the ER. I'm 2.5 hours away from him. I started doing better, I was drinking Pedialyte mixed with no sugar added grape juice like crazy. I ended up drinking 2.5 bottles, 33.8 oz each, and grape juice and two cups of lactose free milk every day. I'm back to eating again, trying to. I've thrown up twice today, I woke up at 4:30 AM yesterday and threw up. I haven't had nearly enough to drink, eat and I've taken 1/3 of the calcium I should be taking. Any advice at all? Thank you.
  17. "buyer's remorse" is pretty common the first couple of weeks. I had it, too. But then suddenly, things changed and I was really glad I had the surgery. also - most people don't have a bowel movement until they're about a week out. Not much in there. That first one can be a doosie, though, so be prepared... (And just so you know, constipation can be a long-term issue for some of us (not all - but some). I've taken a capful of Miralax every day for several years to keep on top of it. But even for those who don't deal with it long term, it's very common to take a week when you're right out of surgery)
  18. I had surgery the day after Thanksgiving. I was 7 weeks out this past Friday. I'm struggling. I was/am dehydrated, severely dehydrated. I knew I wasn't drinking enough for a couple of weeks, my skin was very dry and my lips stayed chapped. Last Saturday at 4 PM I started vomiting uncontrollably and at the same time my head was pounding. We were out running errands, my husband had to pull over. I had to take a couple of drinking of water so I'd have something to throw up. I kept heaving on the way home, luckily we were about 6 blocks away. My husband went to Walgreens to get Pedialyte and he was able to talk to the pharmacist. He said classic signs of advanced dehydration. Keep me drinking, so I was doing nothing but drinking this stuff, lactose free milk and chicken broth. Called and was able to talk to my doctor Sunday. He said what I was doing was good. If I started running a fever or 100 or more, go to the ER. Did good until I felt a little better Monday evening, then I made the mistake of trying to eat some stew meat. He wants me to start getting protein shakes in, 100 grams of protein a day. I'm on my third brand, they all make me sick after about 1/4 of the bottle. I can't get in all my supplements; it feels like I'm eating a meal. I am at a loss. I cannot comfortably eat more than an oz of food at a time. Have you had problems with being sick?

    Not losing anything??

mine lasted two weeks. But they last for three weeks for some people.
  20. Aah, this sounds very familiar. We’ve all been where you are & gone through much the same experiences & feelings. Stalls are frustrating but they happen. Think of them as your body taking a break to catch up with all the changes. They come & they go too. Stick to your plan, avoid the scales for a few days & you’ll be fine. Are you taking small bites (a teaspoon)? Are you eating slowly? Is your food moist? Eating small bites slowly ensures you’re not putting too much pressure on your much smaller tummy & helps to ensure you don’t eat until you are full. Try to eat until you’ve had enough & what you need. Do you need that next bite or just want it? When you say nothing tastes good or satisfies do you you mean the food you’re eating does not offer the same comfort it did before? Coming to terms with how you see food & how you used food can be very challenging. Food should be enjoyable & tasty but shouldn’t offer an emotional support. Plus you’re making big changes to your diet. By following your eating plan you are eating very differently & likely avoiding a lot of the food you used to eat. This also can be upsetting & some experience food grief. In time you may be able to re introduce some of your old favourites occasionally or in much smaller portions. Also, your tummy can be more sensitive & fussy for a while & you’ll have times where you can’t tolerate something you ate easily yesterday. I used to say my tummy was like a tantrum throwing 2yr old. If your tummy doesn’t like something, give it a break for a week & then try again. Many of us experience a change to our taste buds &/or sense of smell post surgery too & food we used to enjoy becomes disgusting. It does pass. The first couple of months can be a struggle. So many changes. Everything is different. But it will all get better & much easier to manage. Don’t be afraid to seek the assistance of a therapist to help you. All the best.
  21. I am 8 weeks post op. I've lost 42 lbs. I am now at a stall weight which is fine I guess, I've read serveal post that say this stall is just temperary so I'm trying to remain optimistic. My biggest problem is "food". Nothin goes down right and nothing feels good in my stomach. I'ts very discouraging. And I miss the satified feeling you get when you eat something really good. Everything I try to eat taste okay but not good. Plus I get really full really fast.
  22. Thanks. I have actually struggle with logging in my food, I haven't done that in a really long time. I felt like I didn't really have to do it for the first six months so I recently started trying to get used to that habit, I would do well logging in breakfast but than the rest of the day I would just fail so I think I should start logging in my foods and try to develop this habit. I think I am doing well with my exercise; I think it's mostly my food. I know I was snacking way too much too so I am trying to now avoid snacking on those snacks that im like hooked to and im going to avoid eating out for this coming month and see if that helps. I just bought tons of meat at the store and veggies so im hoping this will help me this week, taking it day by day I do love cooking so my goal is to cook in batches for the next day and week, to make my food delicious and colorful and to just enjoy it again. I also do struggle eating slow, I tend to eat fast and I haven't been drinking at least 64oz of water per day, I know my body needs more especially with me exercising more. I guess I am just feeling overwhelmed with logging in my food, exercising, drinking enough of water, etc. So I guess I know what im struggling with, so I just need to focus on those to help me get back on track. It just seems harder already, my appetite has increased greatly and im lacking motivation at this moment because I still have a long way to go
  23. Any tips on what I should have on hand the first week post op?

    2 days away!!!!!

    Thanks

you should have protein drinks 30g. premiere , sugar free popsicles, sugar free fudge pops , crystal light any flavor to add to your water, unflavored isopure protein get from gnc , chicken broth , water with protein already in it. these are the things you will have to choose from for the first 2 weeks of your surgery.

    January Surgery buddies

Hi my name is Valerie West. I am one week into my two week liquid diet and I have a schedule date for the bariatric bypass surgery on January 25! I’m glad to be here!
  25. I would imagine the surgeon requires that you are not alone the first 24 hours anyway. The next day it would be helpful to have someone to set up and arrange things for you. From there you can probably handle things yourself or just have someone come for 1-2 hours once or twice a day. Showering is hard initially but you probably can't do that until you are back home anyway. Bring one of those gripper openers just in case you need to open a bottle that's tight. You can ask the pharmacy to give you easy to open pill bottles not the child proof ones. Maybe try to pack a tiny scissor in your suitcase to open any plastic pain tablets. Gripping and ripping were hard to do after surgery besides the obvious reaching over head. You would probably need help lifting your suitcase for the trip home. I wasn't driving for at least a week after. I would definitely hire a cleaning service and also have them do laundry. There's no way you can safely pull out a load of heavy wet clothes or bedding. Later you can do just a small load with a few items on your own. Get a long reacher, have a wedge for the bed (ask the hotel for a lot of extra pillows and even use an extra blanket rolled up to make a wedge to sleep more upright), maybe a seat for the shower and long shower hose so you can do that on your own once you return home. Before you leave have your home set up so everything is within reach. Even buy milk in half gallons vs a big gallon size. Have everything set out on the counters so its ready when you get home. Not very eco friendly but have bottles of water in the fridge and premake meals so you don't have to mess with that after surgery.
