Just thought I would share an update on how I am doing, as I know this post will benefit those who are still preparing for surgery (I was reading everything all over this board leading up to my surgery as well!) I had surgery last Tuesday, Jan 24th at 8:30am. I was in the hospital for one night. My surgeon keeps most patients two nights but I was walking, drinking, passed the leak test and tolerating puree 24 hours after surgery so he gave me the option to stay or leave. I have been on a puree diet for a week now. I eat four times a day. The first meal is a protein shake and then other three are 3-4 oz of low fat pureed protein (chicken, tuna, greek yogurt or cottage cheese). I really don't feel much hunger, and if I do it's usually in my head. Because I have to eat so slowly, sometimes I even forget to finish something and then it becomes a chore to get it done (definitely a different behavior than I am used to). If I eat something too quickly my chest gets tight, so I have slowed down even more. I have been blessed that nothing has made me sick yet. I did have nausea at first, but my surgeon gave me a prescription to control that. The first few days I was also having esophageal spasms and stomach cramps, and I even had to sip my fluids very very slowly. My surgeon said these were normal symptoms and they went away after a few days. I am able to get my fluids in more comfortably now. I did end up with constipation so I had to take some milk of magnesia, but no big deal. I have been walking every day since I got home. The first few days I would have somebody take me to the grocery store with them and I would walk around pushing the cart (it was cold outside!). This week I have been going to my gym everyday and walking slowly on the treadmill for 30min. All in all, it was 4-5 days after surgery until I felt back to "normal" (excluding eating of course). Best wishes to all those who have an upcoming surgery and to those who already had their surgery and started the next chapter of their journey!

Has WLS Helped your autoimmune and endocrine issues?
mylighthouse replied to norcaligirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's great that you already have the healthy diet under control. I changed the way I ate before surgery.... had a meeting with my nutritionist a couple of months before surgery and she helped me so much. I started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I was eating (cut out all starchy veggies) and focused on high protein foods and healthy veggies. I was able to drop 20 pounds a month and a half before my surgery (my surgery was on November 14). Now at almost 5 months out, I focus on a high protein, low carb diet. As you probably know, they want you to get at least 60 grams of protein a day after surgery. I am getting 90-100 grams of protein a day, which has really helped me to drop the weight. I eat about a 3 ounce portion of protein (sometimes less) for lunch and dinner. Starting with my meat first, and then I am only able to eat a few bites of non-starchy veggies before I get full. I eat mostly chicken, sometimes fish or boiled plain shrimp, and sometimes steak or even the occasional piece of pork loin. I have never been a big breakfast eater, so I usually just have a few almonds and part of a Premier chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Eating high protein helps you stay full longer and low carbs keep you from really getting hungry. I also use Isopure non flavored protein powder to get my extra protein in. That stuff is awesome! When I first had my surgery, I was on full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed food, then 2 weeks of "soft" food. Then after that, I went to regular food. During the liquid, pureed and soft food, I used to eat cottage cheese, plain lowfat low carb/low sugar yogurt and a piece of string cheese everyday. I don't really eat those foods anymore, and because I've had such terrible constipation problems, I've had to cut all cheese out of my diet. -
Can I get by without blending foods ?
jess9395 replied to Mhy12784's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never blended anything. I did fine with protein shakes, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans, Greek yogurt, etc. Some people can add eggs to that, I couldn't tolerate them until about six month out. Anyhow it's do able! -
Heading to full liquids
ruaamy replied to ortega07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started yesterday. I ate 2 tsp of Greek yogurt and 1tsp of SF pudding and did fine. So today I ate 2 oz of cream of broccoli soup but it took me 45 minutes and my stomach made every noise possible. I am only one week post op -
I have been skipping the yogurt for mine and they don't get as thick. I have unjury choc splendor and mix that with 8oz of skim milk. It bubbles up but it will settle after a few minutes. In the cafeteria where I work they will make smoothies for you and they will put my protein into them so I use the BA vanilla protein with 8oz of milk, some banana and blueberries, it gets thicker than the unjury but not too too bad.

AudsMom replied to Allformyson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on the liquid diet (2 weeks) and it is hard for me. The worst item i am fighting with head hunger is.. CHEEZE ITS! OMG i will never buy those again. They make them where u can smell them as they open the box. Very tempting, but i have stayed on track:) My daughter btw is also 14 months old.. and she eats everything, my prob with her is she trys to feed mommy.. Then when she is done eating she wants what mommy is eating.. She loves grits, and cream of potato Soup..oh and the V8 broccoli, and yogurt, gosh that kid will eat anything. -
One week from the next chapter of my life
MissME replied to Mrs King's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@Mrs King, first of all congratulations! I spent the last week before surgery on a liquid diet. My suggestion is just stick to it and don't give in to the 'last meal' temptations. It really is preparation for the weeks ahead when you will be on liquids and soft foods only. After surgery Gas X was a good friend of mine. I got the strips that dissolve on your tongue that I would use whenever I felt gassy (a side effect of the surgery). Everyone heals differently. For me I had a lot of soreness at the main incision site for about 3 1/2 weeks after surgery. The nurses at the hospital had given me a cool re-useable ice pack. I liked it so much they gave me a second one and I took them both home to ice the incision site. That helped a lot! I used it right up to the time when the pain finally became dull. Again, not everyone has the same type of muscle aches and pains at the incision site but it would be good to get an ice pack just in case. Also, I am tall and I found that laying in bed or on a chair that didn't require me to strain to get up was a lot more comfortable then sitting in a low chair and having to fight my way out of it. This is less stressful on the incision site too. Pillows were also my constant companions, for compression and to prop me up on my bed. I guess the last piece of advice would be to know that WLS is not easy, especially right after surgery. I was so tired of eating/drinking the same things that didn't care that I lost 20 lbs in two weeks. All I wanted was some flavor! There is sort of a mourning period for food but that gets better too. After weeks of sweet tasting things like Protein shakes, pudding, yogurt, and popsicles, having real food in the form of Egg Drop Soup and oatmeal helped me to soldier on until eventually I could start adding more flavorful things to my diet. Looking back on the first few weeks after surgery I had some pretty miserable moments but I am nearly 3 months post OP now and things are going so well that I almost forgot all about that. If you find yourself in the same place I was just know that it always gets better and it definitely is worth it! -

9 days post op and I can already eat 4oz yogurt?
cindyw41 replied to Talaria's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1/2 cup is normal at this stage. Yogurt does have nutritional values so not much of a slider food. It helps with your vitamins and protein intake and also counts toward your liquid intake. -

This shows 8oz of Greek yogurt in the "mushy" food stage (this is not from my surgeon's practice) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hi everybody. I started my pre op liquid diet and I’m 4 days in. It’s not easy. I feel lightheaded and have no energy. I try to keep busy as much as possible. I drink protein shakes, jello sf, O% fat Greek yogurt and homemade soups. I can eat puréed soups as well right? Like broccoli soup or pumpkin soup. Why are all pre op diets so different? Some can eat lean meats or fish. Would it be really bad if I just ate some cooked tuna or chicken? Btw my surgery date is Oct 12

VSG 5/23/16 Looking for surgery buddies
mich74 replied to justhere4theshow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm doing very well. I had troubles with the anesthesia but other than that no problems at all. I'm down to one Protein shake a day and getting the rest from food; Greek yogurt, eggs, Beans and cottage cheese, some chicken. I start real food Monday. Can't wait. I'm using toddler utensils and small plates. Only getting about 600-700 calories but my doc said to worry about protein and fluids first. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
It's Passover right now, so no bread, cracker or Pasta items for me. This year it actually isn't that traumatic since I've cut those items way down since being banded on 2/17. Morning: Starbucks Tall Skinny Cinnamon Dulce Latte (only like 90 cals/14 carbs/9 protein) Breakfast: 1/2 cup of egg salad w/ dill, onions and light mayo. 1/2 cup pineapple Lunch: 3oz grilled chicken with light ranch wrapped in boston lettuce leafs. 1/2 cup cucumber salad Snack: Fage 0% Greek Yogurt - Cherry Pomegranate Pre-Workout: GNC Lean shake - Vanilla Dinner: 3 meatballs, 1/4 cup pasta sauce, 1/4 cup 1% cottage cheese on top and melted. 1 cup of matzo ball soup.

10 days out is this normal?
mylighthouse replied to carlychloe2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When you eat the yogurt and other things, are you eating slowly? If it's a small yogurt, it might be normal to be able to eat the whole thing. The thing to keep in mind is that you want to eat very slowly so that you know exactly when enough is enough. I personally could not have eaten a whole small yogurt at 10 days post op. As far as the drinking goes, I never had any problems at all with drinking since day 1. I was getting in my 64 ounces plus almost from day one. A lot of people have trouble with that, so it's great that you are doing so well with it. Congratulations on your surgery! -
I used to eat such good things...now I feel like I'm living on scrambled eggs, deli meats, cheese, and yogurt! I was doing great at 6 weeks out, now at almost 10 weeks my poor stomach is having such issues. I had an endoscopy almost 2 weeks ago that showed severe gastritis (irritation) and so many things just don't sit well anymore. A lot of the foods I depended on make me sick now. I'm really hoping this will resolve over time because I'm getting really frustrated. I'm down 46 pounds since my surgery, and 70 from my high, so that's the good news. I just hope I don't have to deal with this part much longer...

Sliders are foods which go down easily, have high calories and little nutritional value. They don't fill you up. So things such as icecream. Then there are other foods which go down easily but they are more satisfying and have a high nutritional value so they are not really a slider. e.g Greek Yogurt.

I'll be sure to let you know. I am aquiring quite a collection of extracts/flavorings. I use them in my Protein shakes as well as my greek yogurts. I have everything from lollipop to rootbeer. It makes all of this almost fun, but definitely yummy! :hungry: Valentina

I don't like dairy/eggs/fish! What will I eat?
TiredOfMyself replied to TiredOfMyself's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks so much for all the advice. It seems like all anyone talks about are eggs, yogurt and fish, I was getting freaked out at the thought of not being able to eat the "good" foods everyone else is having. I guess it's a stupid fear! -
Went for my 6 week follow up and have questions...
TeacherMommy posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm actually 7 weeks post op and went through a stall weeks 5 and 6. I posted on here what I was eating and everyone told me I was eating too little (600ish calories daily), so I up'd my caloric intake to 700-800 by adding an afternoon snack (cheese stick, yogurt, etc). I finally ended my stall after doing so, so I thought I was doing good. Then today, my surgeon told me to reduce back down to 600, that 700-800 is what I should eat around 6 months out. He told me stalls were normal (which we all know) and that increasing my intake wasn't a good idea... Today i left out my afternoon snack and I'M STARVING!!! I wish surgeons were more consistent. My is soooooo strict!!! Anyone have any ideas on this?? -
Problem tolerating whey isolates?
della street replied to gofigure's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@ I second Vega One -- I use their powder and mix with soy or almond milk or even Greek yogurt --- delish! And at Sprouts, you can buy 'sample packs' - maybe $3 or so - so you can try flavors - I've seen vanilla and chocolate, and haven't tried vanilla, but the choc is super-good. To buy the 'tub' is kinda pricey, but not really more so than any others - and lasts a very long time. It's def worth it to have protein foods you truly look forward to -- -
I don't like dairy/eggs/fish! What will I eat?
JamieLogical replied to TiredOfMyself's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
As others have said: chicken, turkey, beef, pork, venison, cheese, nuts, beans.... There are many sources of protein still available to you. I'm 17 months out and rarely eat yogurt anymore (though I admit to relying on it heavily in my early food stages). And I only eat eggs if I am out to eat. Don't keep them in the house because they go bad before I get around to eating them. And I have HATED fish my entire life, though I do eat shellfish. -
Hi Heather I'm Nicole I'm from North Ridgeville, OH. I lived in Walnut Creek, CA at one time. I had my gastric Bypass on 9/20. Starting weight: 319 Surgery weight: 293 Current weight: 276 I finally did this for myself. I have a three year old and 15 year old. I wanted to be healthier to do things with my kids. When I explained to my little one why mommy had surgery so she could play with him more, he goes "Oh, that will be good." Lol. I also just want to be able to go places and feel comfortable. Not look around to see if I am the biggest person in the room and feel ashamed when I realize I am. I am seeking comfort in my own body. Only being a few weeks out, my diet is fairly limited. Tried: Rotisserie chicken with FF Greek yogurt and curry (yum!), no bean chili, lean ground turkey and chicken, FF refried Beans, FF cottage cheese I haven't found much I can't handle yet. Had a sensitive stomach prior to surgery, so I am trying to be very careful. I found a great WLS cook book on amazon. Tried the teriyaki turkey burgers last night (puréed for me), and it was fantastic. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Hello everyone, My surgery was June 24th. I was cleared for full liquids yesterday. I am allowed all Protein shakes, no fat yogurt, sugar free applesauce, sugar free pudding, cream Soups with no lumps, etc. I can't seem to swallow anything thicker than my Protein shake without feeling like a lump is in my throat for hours. I had 1/4 teaspoon of the applesauce earlier and immediately got the lump and nausea. I'm not sure how anyone else does it! Does this mean I probably just still have swelling and should stick to the shakes for now? I can swallow them just fine and fluids just fine. I haven't called the doc because I'm not in pain, I just can't get anything that seems like "food" down. Thanks for listening to me whine. Let me know if you experienced anything similar. Chelle

SO glad you wrote this topic! I am exactly the same, no yogurt, milk, or fish for me. They all make me sick. I am having surgery on Tuesday and I am really worried too. Seems like there are alternatives. Thanks again for asking! ????
