  1. Good morning! I was scheduled for my surgery on May17th. The day after my pre-admin, my PCP called to let me know the enzyme levels in my kidneys were way up and my EKG didn't look right. She said she did not want me to go through with the surgery at this time. I was devastated! She set me up with a Nephologist. I met with her the following Monday. She said that since I had been on so much protein, lost 30 lbs quickly, was still on the same meds, and a bit dehydrated, my kidneys just couldn't filter all that out. So PCP dropped all my meds ( diabetic, bp, cholesterol) and put me on one low dose diabetic med. I increased my water intake. They did an ultra sound on my kidneys, no damage. YEAH! I stayed on the liquid diet, hoping that I would be rescheduled for WLS soon. I got the call that surgery was rescheduled for June 15th. So, I was on normal food for a week before starting back on the liquid. Cracker Barrel veggies was my first dinner. Next came the heart issues. I had an ultra sound on my heart. I was then referred to a cardiologist. The ultra sound showed that I had a hole in my heart. Next was a transesophigial echocardiograph (TEE). Lots of prayers were going up!! Dr. told my husband afterward that the hole was not there! Thank you God!! I had my pre-admin Wednesday for my surgery Saturday. All test results came back normal!! I am to report tomorrow morning at 8:00 for surgery at 10:00!!! It has been some journey! I can't wait to be on the other side of sleeved! Please remember, all you pre-ops, DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!.

Can I lie - hernia op?

My surgery is on 12-30 I have had all these appointments that required me to miss a lot of work these last few weeks and I work in a call center of about 100 people and within that call center I am on a small email specialty team of 10 and needless to say everyone is nosey. I did let my boss know and one other person that I trusted on my team, but for the the rest of the team I work with I told them I am getting a Hernia repaired. It is the truth but just not the whole truth. So I feel your pain, do what you feel comfortable with. The people I work with are not supportive just from what I saw from how they reacted when other employees in the call center had the surgery. Of course eventually they will figure it out, but I feel my nerves are on edge already I don't need extra negitive opinions on how I should just eat less and do it on my own. Leslie9595

    It's Been Almost 4 Years!

How is everyone doing? I'm proud to say that I am at a respectable 160 pounds and holding. I'm also in a size 10 which was my over all goal. I need to tone up but otherwise I'm happy! Started at 250 and a size 22.
  6. I'm 3 days post-op & down 14 pounds! 10 was pre-op! So excited, nervous, and READY for this life change!
  7. I had my surgery 2/10 and any little thing I eat burns like heartburn n I'm getting a terrible pain in my middle upper back. I'm on omperazole from my dr and I take it religiously but it's not helping. I eat very small amounts and slowly and it still kills to go down and I sit uncomfortably after everything I eat or drink I'm freaking that I'm gonna end up with an ulcer from all the reflux.... Has anyone gone throught that?

Hi ladies, I wanted to pop in and say I got my band on 10/24 and am filling good. Although no restriction, but I think I'm eating less. I'm starting to walk around.
  9. Hi Everyone, My name is Gina. I just joined this forum last week. I came across it by accident actually. I was researching information on the Sleeve procedure and I bumped into this wonderful forum. I've been hesitant to post anything because I am just learning about the procedure and diets, etc. But, I wanted to introduce myself. I am 33 years old. I just started my 2 week pre-op diet today. I'll be having surgery on 12/20/10. This forum has been a tremendous help on what to expect and how to prepare for this upcoming event! Surprisingly, I'm not really scared, I'm excited, I can't wait to start this journey, although it won't be an easy one. Has anyone ever had the VSG and had a filter inserted for DVT? I have history of blood clots and have been on Coumadin for over a year, but, my surgeon is going to have my Vascular surgeon come in and implant the filter to avoid the blood clots. I'm pretty sure I'll have more questions coming up, but, I just wanted to introduce myself. Gina
  10. Welcome Gina! I had VSG on 9/2/10 and I also had a history of dvt's and pe's. I had my filter placed about 1 week before surgery, everything went fine and i'm doing well. They went in about 3 weeks after my surgery to remove the filter but they we unable to retrieve it.......the dr said that it's fine to stay there the rest of my life actually. I'm okay with that because I feel like I have protection in case I ever get another clot in my legs I know that it wouldn't be able to travel to my lungs like before. I wish you luck with you up coming procedures and your weight loss.
  11. So here I am on day one, week three of post op. Dr.'s rules are that now begins the 2 week period of pureed Full liquid Stage. I did fine on the last two weeks of Clear liquids with no hunger and getting most everything in every day. Funny thing is that I have this huge list of things I can have, but due to working midnights and having a really hectic schedule, I am not sure how to eat or when to eat. I have three breaks at work, 2-10 minute and one 30 minute lunch. Tonight I took Cream of chicken Soup (4oz.) I had this at lunch and loved every minute of it....lol. I also had a sugar free pudding at a 10 minute break. But I am not sure if I am doing it right or have enough time to eat correctly even though I managed tonight with no problem. Can anyone help me on what they eat in this catagory that is easy so that I could take it to work and make it all right. Should I stick to Protein shakes for work and then eat only when home....not sure and so confused. I thought I had this all worked out until day one appeared out of nowhere... I have done really well with my weight loss so far since surgery and have lost a total of 24 lbs..... maybe a little of the fear comes in thinking I will gain that back if I eat differently. So not sure about this..... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks bunches

    Should I Do It ?

What does your primary physician say? Have you gone to a seminar and had the opportunity to ask questions? Have you talked to others who have gone through the procedure and were successful and happy about the outcome? I'm definitely not saying that iggychic had to say isn't important, because it is. It's very important to learn all the good AND all the bad that can happen so it will help you make the best decision for YOU. Only you can make the decision. Not us, not your hubby, not your mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, or friends....only YOU. You know what's best for you and your son, You know what will work best for your weight loss. I have told only about 10 people (not including my parents, etc.). Only those I knew would support me and my decision, and they are all very excited for me (hubby, mom-in-law, sis-in-law, sis, half-sis, 1 uncle, and friends). I too have struggled all my life with my weight. I've gained, I've lost, I've gained it back....only to be frustrated over and over. Last year I started seeing my current primary. He mentioned that he wanted me to lose weight before seeing him the next year for my physical. I burst into tears and told him what a struggle it was. He said he thought I was a little depressed and prescribed welbutrin (which I LOVE) and a meeting witha psychiatrist to work out my self-esteem issues. Try as I did for a year, I would lose some, but gain it back, and only watched the days tick away until that next appointment, only to be scolded at my next appointment with him and I broke. I asked him how in the world am I supposed to be successful? I've struggled with this all my life! That's when he suggested the sleeve with the Center of Excellence and a Dr. they hospital had hired away from another hospital who was one of the first to be trained on the procedure in the U.S. In my opinion....I would talk it over with your primary. Go to the seminar, meet with the psychologist, maybe attend a support group and meet people who are in a similar situation, and really search inside for the answer that is right for you. It will take a little time, and maybe a lot of tears and guilt, but you need to do what's right for you, and what's right for the future of your relationship with your son. I send you prayers and wish you much luck with your decision. PS. My surgery is scheduled for 11/16. I'm nervous and excited all rolled into one.

    Hard facts?

Yet that's country specific. Statistics are nowhere near so depressing in Australia. I personally have met and known many bandsters online who have reached their goal weights and more than a few who have had their bands 10 years plus! That 50 to 70% of excess weight isnt quoted as regularly over here, probably due to population averages, general lower starting weights (Australia hasnt quite caught up to America in the obesity stakes yet), I dont know. There's also fewer people in this country and therefore fewer banded, so that alters the statistics, see what I mean? What percentage of total bandsters is your 600 - in a country as big as America, its miniscule, who says they're representative of bandsters as a whole? You cant know that, and that's why dissecting the terminology does change the picture. I'm not disputing the fact that people need to be realistic about the outcome they'll achieve with this thing, but you cant interpret statistics as if they're fact and it simply isnt healthy to go into something like this either blinkered OR with a defeatist attitude that means you're beaten before you start. And I've just started this whole argument going again probably, which I shouldnt have done, but this distinction does bug me. Its a real one. Ok, well I guess its just another agree/disagree thing, I've said what I think so I wont continue to restate it.
  14. Its great to read messages from others with low BMIs. Mine is 31 - 32 , but I have high BP and high cholesterol.I weigh 74 kg which when you are 5 foot nothing tall is a lot and all the excess weight is around my stomach, the unhealthiest place for it to be. I am tired of looking pregnant when I'm not and would like to get this under control before I get to the stage where it would be considered "normal" to do this. I have followed every diet going in the past. Some have been successful for a while but I have always regained. I have even tried non diet methods such as hypnosis which was a total waste of time. the older I get (46) the harder I find it to lose weight.I have a new GP as I moved about 10 months ago. I asked him to refer me for a lapband and he REFUSED, he said I wasn't overweight enough and that the risks outweighed the benefits. Unfortunately(or is it fortunately) I hate been told I can't do something so I made an appointment to see the specialist myself. The admin staff were quite surprised that I didn't have a referral and completely shocked when I told them my GP refused. My specialist assessed me and due to the comorbidities agreed that the surgery was an option and that my risks are relatively low. I now have a date of 2 June and am extremely nervous. The only person that knows about this is my husband - I don't want to have to explain to everyone and would rather keep it private. Some of the preop testing scares me more than the op. I am wondering how I am going to cope with a sleep test when I have a major problem of getting up all the time at night to go to the loo! That could be really interesting - I'm likely to either not sleep at all because of worry or forget I'm attached to electrodes and fall over and injure myself. Would love to hear from others there experiences of the tests etc. Also I want to put a ticker on but being slightly chat group challenged have no idea where to add it. Can anyone help me ? PLEASE:smile2:
  15. I went to aseminar last fall. In December I went for checkup with doctor I have seen for 10 years. That was initial visit then I had to go Jan. Feb, March, April, May and June before they could send paper work to Humana. In the April May month I went for cardio clearence and pulimanary test also. I went Feb. 29 for my 1st all day appointment. There was dietician. check up and psy evaluation that day. You do not see the suegeon til you are approved, The 2nd day appointment and then surgery date. I am being banded Dr. Oldham/Weiss at Georgetown, KY Kathy
  16. I too was banded on 7/15/08 and I have lost 5 lbs. I do everything right, I eat my protein, drink my water, and eat 800-1000 calories a day. I was only expecting to lose 10 lbs per month, but am no where near that. If I had lost 26 lbs since my surgery I would be dancing on the stars. Everyone loses at different rates and we all need to be happy to be losing and not gaining at this point.

    Why are we doing this?

1.) To be healthy. Being as heavy as I was at 19 isn't healthy, and even though I didn't have severe health problems, I'm sure I was getting there. But 45lbs lighter I'm healthier feeling both physically and mentally. 2.) Comfort. I don't feel very comfortable carrying around 100lbs+ of extra weight. It sucks, and even dumb things such as going to the mall really makes me uncomfortable. The weight is coming off and I see myself feeling much better personally. 3.) I LOVE rollercoasters, though I always aimed for the middle of them because that's where the "heavier" people can fit. I never had a problem fitting, but it will be nice to go on and be able to sit where I want and not have to worry about a thing. 4.) Looks wise. Of course, at 19 going on 20 I wanna be able to look good and feel good too. I'm already down to a size L/XL in most clothing and down 2 pants sizes, so I'm getting there.
  18. I had to wait 6 months before my surgery and I actually gained 10 pounds in those six months, I felt like I needed to eat all the bad foods because after surgery I wouldn't be able to. Had the sleeve done April 17th and I have lost 70 pounds since my surgery date! I was worried I would Stoll want all the bad foods still but its actually the opposite. Good luck!
  19. Some of my nausea could have been from the liquid pain meds but I ruled that out by stopping it all together. Those prob wasnt great because I feel like it took me Longer than it should have to get moving, but it was so gross I couldn't stomach it. I've just been without. But still need the zofran. I agree if they told us everything we probably would have gone with a Lucerne of diets And failures instead of getting this tool now to change our lives. I keep telling myself it will pay off as I know it will. The carnation Breakfast essentials and the nectar are low carb. The carnation is the No sugar added one it's a blue box. It has 60 calories And 12g of carbs. This is what they had me on during my pre op liquid diet. I mix it with skim milk. It can be purchased at your local grocery store or Wal-Mart although my local Wal-Mart is usually out I usually have to go to the regular grocery store for it The nectar brand has 15 flavors. Ive only tried 3. It is 100 calories per scoop and 0 carbs and 23g of Protein. It came highly v recommend by my dietician bcuz he said it is a protein isolate and not a protein blend which means u absorb all of the protein. The cheapest place I've found this is online. At my location Vitamin shoppe it was $45-$55, but it is cheaper at www.mybariatricpantry.com shipping was under a week and they also have a sample pack for like $20 where they will send you 10 different individual flavors to try. For another great flavor a patient who had the bypass came in to one of our classes and mixed the 2 together (which makes a couple servings) And it was great. A strawberry chocolate concoction but not too sweet

    Wanted: Toilet

HI! I am new to this site, I just had my surgery on 10/31/07. I had the lap band and a heitial hernia done at the same time. When they went in the hernia was a lot worse then they expected (my stomach lining was making its way through the hernia and had to be pulled out) so my 45min to 1 hour surgery lasted 2 hours, but everything is fine now. I don't know what kind of hernia you have but most surgeons will do them both at the same time. So far things are really good and I just have a little soreness in the hernia site (belly button area) All my other sites are healing nicely. It took me a long time to decide if this was what I wanted to do and now that the surgery is over, I am really glad I made this decision. I started my pre-surgery diet on Oct 15th and so far I have lost 18lbs total, that use to take me 2-3 months on weight watchers and when I stopped the weight would just pile back on. good luck on your decision. Eileen
  21. This is the first time on the site! I'm actually checking on this for my daughter who is 19 - I could also use the surgery, but my concern is for her right now. I'm pretty sure my blue/cross ppo doesn't cover it, although I will call them on Monday. From what I'm reading, this seems to be a complicated process on trying to get the insurance to cover it. Do you suggest starting with a seminar to find a Dr? or with insurance? I'm in Michigan and haven't even made a call yet. Help!! Thanks for listening!

    HI From Massachusetts

I was banded on 10-13. I thought that the heating pad really helped, as did taking gas-X under the tongue strips. I feel much better today than I did yesterday.

My surgeon ok'ed me to travel (by plane) 10 days post-op. As someone already said, Dr. told me to walk around every 30-45 minutes if possible.

    Best way to loose faster?

I have been on this site for awhile and have been in maintenance awhile... and lost about 160# so have some observations to offer. what you hear about honeymoon period (ie easier to lose in the beginning) is true. Also, people who start with more weight to lose will lose faster in terms of raw pounds. If you have 10 pounds to lose, it would stand to reason you are not going to lose 30# in the first month, right? If you had 160 to lose like I did, that might be possible (I did in fact lose about 30 in the first month). Men typically lose faster than women, younger people often lose faster than older etc - some of those things are really outside of your control. what can you control? Taking advantage of your weight loss tool - the sleeve - and really maximize losses during the honeymoon phase AND probably more importantly be willing to make changes and shake things up once you are - 6-12 months out and the losses (or even maintenance) aren't quite so easy. What works? In my experience, low to moderate carb is key. Staying active and be willing to change up your workout routine. If for example you go for daily walks... as time goes on you will get better results if you start increasing the intensity (add hills or go faster) or change to something else like cycling. Your body gets very efficient at doing whatever it is used to doing. I think the other key is learning to STOP eating before you are full. Get in the habit of eating until no longer hungry... your goal is not feel full. Eating this way day in and day out helps alot with longer term feeling restriction/feeling like your sleeve has a smaller capacity. also, follow the basic rules of Protein and veggies first... drinking separate from food etc. It isn't always easy... my sleeve was December 11, 2011 - I drank a Protein Drink while everyone else had Christmas feast. You know what, it is so worth it though! These days food just isn't as important to me... but that didn't happen overnight...
