    January surgeries?!

    I have to walk 5x/day for 5-10 minutes at a time. And yeah, drinking is so hard right now. I've been sleeping so much that it honestly hasn't been a priority—I've just been focused on water because I don't want to get dehydrated. Hopefully the anesthesia will have worn off more tomorrow and I won't be sleeping as much so that I can in more water and protein.

    hey there - I actually went back to work Monday? yes, Monday. I apparently ran out of PTO days so! had to go back early. It was ok. My insides are still adjusting to where they need to 'sit'. I have not been able to keep up with everything I need to "eat" as far as fluids. My stomach says it is just too much so I think I'm a little swollen. I did overdo it b/c I also worked my 8-10 hours, washed clothes, vacuumed, cleaned the kitchen washed dishes and then sat down to work. TBH, it *was* TOO much. I didn't feel the best. But by yesterday I was fine again and today I actually feel as though I never had the surgery. I am taking it slow b/c I don't want to risk anything. YAY for only a 24-hour pre-op diet!! That's great. But I have to say, I'm not craving anything. It's so wierd. I only ask that my husband not eat anything crazy in front of me that will turn me into a insane person. I think I do have triggers..LOL. 20 days...the time will FLY!!!! Congrats!!

    It is called a “Fobi Pouch”. A US surgeon pioneered it. Some folks hate the idea of a foreign body in there - I previously had a gastric band for 10 years so it didn’t bother me. And - exceedingly low regain rates for fobi folk.

    A1C dropped from 7.1 to 5.8

    Add me to the list. My A1C's have never been higher than 7.1, but I have morning syndrome--so I would get big spikes in my blood glucose in the AM. Pre-surgery I was taking 1000mg of MetFormin a day and 1.8mg of Victoza. Even with the meds, my morning glucose readings were anywhere from 125 to 170. When I was discharged from the hospital after surgery, I was cut down to just 500mg of MetFormin a day. For the past 10 days, my morning readings were between 79 and 105. My PCP suggested I stop the MetFormin and see how my blood sugars are doing. So, without the metformin, I had a BG reading of 82! I'll see how it goes over the next couple of days, but I am really excited by this! I am not going to have my blood work done until March, but I hope I see a big drop in my A1C's just like you guys.

    I had my pre-op yesterday (1/8/19). I actually had 5 appointments. 1) pre-op (surgery is 1/21/19), 2) heart sonogram with cardiologist, 3) blood work, 4) dietitian, and 5) stress test wit the cardiologist. I was surprised to learn I do not have to do clears for 2 week pre-op. My sheet says either 4 protein shakes a day or low calorie, low carbohydrate dies of no more than 50-60 carbs per day. No snack type foods, sweets, or starches (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, corn, peas, cereal, crackers, etc.) I am having a revision from sleeve to bypass.
  9. I've had a lap band for 3 and a half years. One of my New Years resolutions is to recommit to the rules of banded living and get back to the conscientiousness that I (and a lot of us, I'm guessing) had back when our bands were new. Its not like I'm totally running wild with my eating and drinking; its just that I had gotten a little sloppy with the basics, like eating slowly, taking small bites, chewing thoroughly and drinking at least 64 oz. of water a day.     #9 - How I'm keeping on plan Protein and logging - doing well, Logging is easy for me. Protein has been a struggle, but I've been making protein drinks w Fairlfe, so that gets me mostly to my goal, and I down one even if it's 10 pm, ugh Supplements - Just lay them all out and get through them throughout the day. Doing mostly well, missed a few multi's or calciums due to the need to space them out, and I just run out of time during the day Hydration - This has not been a success, because as I stated, I'm not a true believer. Just hard to find the motivation on this

    Non Scale Victories

    I have got one to add. I was just sleeved on 12/17, mostly to treat my T2DM. Before surgery, every morning my blood glucose levels were over 125 (usually over 130), and that was with taking 1000mg of MetFormin and 1.8mg of Victoza daily. I was taken off the Victoza when I was discharged from the hospital and cut to 500mg of MetFormin. For the past 10 days, my morning blood glucose levels have been between 79 and 105. I talked to my PCP yesterday, and he took me off the MetFormin to see how I do. Today, I had a morning blood glucose level of 82 without the MetFormin. So, I am officially off all of my T2DM medications!!!! For me, that's huge!!! As much as I want to lose weight, getting my T2DM under control was the biggest reason for me having this surgery.

    Major buyers remorse😭

    I don't think anyone can go through a surgery like this without having some discomfort. The pain will go away in a couple of days. I was lucky that the gas wasn't too terrible for me--I expected it to be terrible, but it was only mildly bothersome. I walked a LOT and took my gas-ex chewables and that helped tremendously. For me, surgical pain was no big deal and I was able to eat and drink without any issues with relative ease. However, I developed a respiratory infection a few days after surgery and there's nothing like a hacking cough after stomach surgery!!! I had level 10 pain every time I coughed (which was every minute or two). I also have had a chronic sore throat (feels like bad strep, but it's not) for the past two weeks. I am seeing my surgeon next week and it's probably GERD. So, we all have our crosses to bare!! I can't say this has been a picnic for me, but I have NO regrets. I am down 17 pounds since the day surgery (12/17) and 28.5 pounds since I started my pre-op diet (12/3). I lost 6 inches on my waist since the day of surgery!!! My blood glucose levels when I wake up (which were always over 125 before surgery) are now in the normal range (79-102) for the past two weeks. I was taken off most of my meds when (except MetFormin) when I left the hospital and, yesterday, my PCP took me off the MetFormin--so I am not on any diabetes meds!!! That's huge!!! I still have high blood pressure, but I am hopeful I can get off blood pressure meds as I lose more weight and exercise etc. Plus, I had issues with my ankle after I severely sprained it last year. After losing 30 pounds, the ankle is 80% better---and I bet it will be 100% better with some more time (and more weight loss). That will save me orthopedic surgery!! Bottom line is there's always a price to pay when you need to correct something like morbid obesity (and it's co-morbidities). For me, some short term pain and a little GERD is well worth the price of getting my T2DM into remission (hopefully)! When you're struggling in the beginning (like we have), you have to keep your eye on the big picture. You're not going to really remember the pain a year from now, when you look and feel great.

    Need Advice for My Family

    A lot of parents see this as a voluntary surgery, and if you view it with that framing, their freakout kind of makes sense - why volunteer for a procedure that has risk? You're fine! Sure, a little fat, but fine! Just diet and exercise to lose a little weight and don't go through a voluntary medical procedure! Many of them hear the medical reasoning, but revert right back to the cosmetic as the core argument, and that's how they convince themselves it's just vain and unnecessary. It's a very in-the-moment calculation, though. When you sit them down and say "you realize that if I keep going like this, I'm likely going to have to replace joints, right? Multiple surgeries?" and then talk about increased risk of illness when you carry a lot of weight, or talk about the impacts of diabetes, etc - that's when it lands that a relatively safe surgical procedure right now is actively warding off MULTIPLE, NON-voluntary surgeries in future. They have a hard time untethering their view from the individual in front of them who might be fat, but is coping. Get them to project 10 years down the line with you having made no changes, and they'll understand that one surgery now is better than four or five down the line, when you're not as young and able to rebound.
  15. I was sleeved on Dec 19, (3 weeks today) I am on puréed foods now and can’t stop burping...all day! I had minor reflux before the surgery... at least that what the doctor told me after my endoscopy. Now I feel like I have it worse 10 time over! Is that something that can happen? You DEVELOP reflux after surgery?
  16. Howdy, I’m scheduled for surgery on 1/30/19 and am on day 9 of my 4 week liquid diet. The diet consists of 4 Bariatric Advantage shakes, 2 Bariatric Advantage protein bars, and either a small banana or 1 cup of skim milk per day. It’s been hard, but I’ve stuck to it and found I’m not hungry or hangry like I was the first 4-5 days. I lost 14lbs in the first week, yay! However, both yesterday and today I’ve gained a pound back. I’ve been told it could be water weight or a number of things, but it is so dang frustrating! Has anyone else encountered this? To try and help myself from going crazy I’ve decided to stop weighing myself everyday. But I’m worried if I gain anymore I’m going to mentally snap and go binge on nachos! Any advice, support, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!

    ❤ JANUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

    #9 How I'm Keeping On Plan: Well, I'm taking it one day at a time. Honestly. Some days have been better, others not-so-much, but I forgive myself and move on. The idea is to string together as many back-to-back days of being 100% on plan as I can, cuz it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more days you string together on success, the more you want to add another day to your tally. And if you have the right plan filled with small actions daily = success eventually! Woot!!! Success is nothing more and nothing less than a series of small repeatable actions done every day. Here's what I'm trying for daily: 1. Log everything (ideally plan it before hand) and track. 2. Weigh daily 3. Get my fluids in (100+/day) 4. Take my supplements 5. Eat 3 small meals no more than 1cup volume (60-70g protein; 20g net carbs; 30-40g fat) 6. IF 16:8 daily 7. Exercise 6 days per week 8. Sleep as much as I can at night (sometimes that's a challenge due to pain) 9. Pray/meditate 10. Spend time with friends

    Saltines? Caught a stomach bug

    Well in my case it wasn't food poisoning, but a relative had a stomach virus. They'd gotten over it, but I went to a Christmas gathering and I and 3 other people ended up catching it from them as well. For most people who caught it it only lasted a day... for me it lasted 10 days lol. Lucky me! I take a medication that suppresses my immune system though, so I'm sure that's why it was worse for me. I've only had food poisoning once in my life. If you're preparing your own food, I wouldn't worry about it too much - just make sure you use your food by the recommended dates, always keep your hands clean when preparing it, and throw it out before it goes bad. I feel you though, catching a stomach bug was my worst nightmare - and of course, I caught one! On the bright side, I lived to tell the tale, so even if you do somehow catch something you will eventually be okay 🤗

    Surgery tomorrow!!!

    Mel and Jdy how did your surgeries go? I was out of recovery and in my room by 11:45am, and then taking my first walk by 12:30pm. I’m taking water, ice, tea, and Jello without issues. Took my first pain medication by mouth this evening. Did find out ice cold water for swallowing pills is a little painful — warm water works much better for me. They indicated I should be discharged by about 10:00am provided I can get 4oz of protein shake down within 1 hour — and keep it down.

    Stalled

    Doreen0716, I completely understand. I will be a year out on the 19th of this month and I've been at a stall for 3 months as well. I try not to let it get the better of me because praise God we've come a long way from where we were. I'm down 70 pounds trying to loose the last 10 but it's a serious challenge. I workout and I try not to consume over 1000 calories. I'm going to try to reset my sleeve/body by starting over on the liquid diet and go from there. So maybe that could be a start for you also. I see alot people are doing the keto diet that had the sleeve, so maybe try a diet plan that's fit for you. But whatever the case dont get frustrated re evaluate and keep pressing. I think the process has just slowed for us all after so many months, to me it seems like when i hit the 9 month mark it slowed big time. But keep us posted on your progress.

    I'm jumping in late so I need to play catch-up. 13 months post-op. Highest weight 276. BW Jan 2 is 220. January goal lose 10 pounds. I really want to lose 50 pounds by Feb 2019 (my 50th birthday). I plan on rewarding myself with an awesome trip. That is my motivation. Week 1 I got down to 217.2. Fitness plan is to go to the gym every morning. So far so good. Here is my beginning pic and fridge pic.

    Questions

    I wish I knew the number two struggles. I guess, I’d say to make sure you stay on top of making sure your bowels are moving. Tips for staying in the game, mental health, dealing with the good/bad... remember that the difficult times will be short lived. My first week post-op was rough, but after that first week I started feeling better and seeing results. It was worth that brief period of discomfort. Also- remember stalls and plateaus will happen. It’s normal. So is seeing your weight loss numbers decrease as you lose weight and time passes. I get stressed because I’m having to work at losing every single pound at this point. I’m no longer losing 10 or 20lbs a month, but I’m 50lbs from my goal. I started 210 lbs from it. These last 50 will be the hardest, but if I stick the the program I should be able to do it!
