    For Just Us Guys

OK, I might as well weigh in on this thread as I am waiting for a date. Everything is done except for the nutrition meeting next Monday. They will not set a date until after the nutrition meeting, so I am hoping the date will be at least by early July. Starting at 430 for my welcome to medicare physical April 24. I had lost from about that point to 398 on Atkins in spring of 2006 before spending 9 months working in New Orleans living in a hotel and gained it all back, again. Over the years, I have lost several clones of me on Atkins but no long term net loss. My LB doctor requires a 2 week liver shrinking liquid diet before surgery and they will not give me any information until the nutrition meeting. For you that have done the pre surgery liquid diet, is something like Atkins canned shakes acceptable for that period or even productive? Is beef and chicken broth with Protein powder better? Or should I go with egg drop Soup from the local chinese restaurant with Protein Powder added? Or all of the above? I would like to hear from some of you guys in addition and in advance of a clinical nutritionist. An additional topic or two. My Doctor and his group recommend Crystal Light for a drink with this LB long term regimen. I love CL peach tea but have become a little alarmed about the aspartame. I have read that aspartame works on the brain to increase head hunger. Anyone have any information about this? So many foods available at restaurants and in grocery stores have MSG in them now and I read that the glutemate in MSG causes a brain reaction that also causes weight gain. Nyone have any information on that as well? Jim
  2. I am completely in agreement, I went to France for mine cause my GP kept telling me to count calories. After a weight gain of almost 5 stones in 2 years I think I was way past counting calories. If it was that easy, we would all be thin right?? LOL I paid £3300 in France for the op and the surgeon there told me that I was a prime candidate with a BMI of 46. The NHS board refused to refund the op cause they said that I would not have had it on the NHS if I had been patient enough to go through the year long process of seeing all the specialist pre-op so I am glad I went abroad! Surely it is about time they realised that being obese is as much an illness as being boulimic or all those other thin illnesses around! They are advertised as ill people to be pitied, we are put up as a figure of shame to be ridiculed???!!!!!
  3. I thought someone might find this helpful. It's the approval guidelines for BC/BS Regence. Even if this isn't your ins. co. it's a good guideline. Policy/Criteria 1.Gastric bypass using a Roux-en-Y anastomosis with an alimentary limb of 150 cm or less, or adjustable gastric banding, consisting of an adjustable external band placed around the stomach, may be considered medically necessary in the treatment of morbid obesity when all of the following criteria are met: A.BMI greater than or equal to 40 kg/m2; or BMI greater than or equal to 35 kg/m2 with at least two of the following comorbid conditions which have not responded to medical management and which are generally expected to improve as a result of obesity surgical treatment: 1)Hypertension 2)Dyslipidemia 3)Type 2 diabetes 4)Coronary heart disease 5)Sleep apnea B.Documentation of active participation for at least one year in a structured, medically supervised nonsurgical weight reduction program, meeting all of the following criteria: 1)Medical supervision must be provided by an MD, DO, NP, PA or a registered dietitian under the supervision of an MD, DO, NP, or PA; and 2)Participation must occur during at least 12 consecutive months within the 24 months prior to the request for surgery; and 3)Documentation must confirm structured oversight and active participation, including: a.At least four visits over the course of 12 months, occurring approximately once every three months; and b.Assessment and counseling concerning weight, diet, exercise, and behavior modification; and c.Either weight loss or no further weight gain over the course of 12 months. It's just about double what I have eaten a day since banded. But I'm still very pissed at myself.I keep trying to listen to myself and say it was just ONE day, just ONE day ..I don't feel so alone now. Last night I ate three chicken tenders, a baked potato and a few bites of salad. Late last night I ate a protein bar. I continue to sip water. So my choices in food are far better than they use to be, and like you the amount of food consumed is nothing like it use to be. I'm feeling really guilty right now. Up five pounds! But I do believe it is PMS weight gain and I didn't take my water pill yesterday..but still!
  5. Howdy, back at ya! I'm here in Houston as well. I was banded about 3 months ago. I to have a hard time w/healty Snacks, But Nuts seem to go down good, and are full of protein! Pituitary adenoma

Hi Christy, I am not familiar with the med you have been taking so long. What exactly is it for? Have youseen a Neurosurgeon about your tumor, and if so, what does he/she say about whether or not surgery would be a definite plan for the future? Have you ever had any surgeries on it yet? Sorry, I don't recall alot of these things from your earlier post. I was starting the process for lap band surgery two years ago and then all came to a screeching halt because I first found out that my insurance has an exclusion through my employer for any kind of weight loss surgery, and second, my second tumor was found. I decided to get that surgery done and already knew that I would also be having the radiation treatment too later on. I am not sure if this surgery will help your weight gain, but for the most part, I believe it will because even though you are on meds that probably caused the weight gain by overeating or not processing fat like it should, the band should keep you in control over that. So, you are having surgery on Monday also? Cool! I will be thinking about you too hun. You take care and don't stress over the other. Concentrate on the surgery and how well it will help you in the long run. Take care, Judy

    Pituitary adenoma

Judy, Thank you for your response. I am just so confused about the pituitary thing. When I went off the pill is when they discovered that I had the tumor and I've been on parlodel for about 8 years. I've had a huge weight gain since then and I really think it is due to the hormones. That is why I am a bit worried that this surgery won't work. But, hopefully it will. The doctors don't seem too worried about it, but my endocrinologist asked me last week if I'm contemplating surgery for the tumor. Did it help you at all? I will be thinking of you on Monday as I go in. Good luck!!!! - also to your band buddy Maureen! Will be nice to go through the "stages" with others! Christy

    Pituitary adenoma

Hello CAWalsh, I have had 2 pit tumors removed since 2001. I am now taking growth hormone shots which I can stop temporarily until after I get back from lap band surgery on Monday in Mexico. My surgery is monday and I will be coming home on Wednesday. I have low growth hormone which just was discovered after my last tumor surgery in 2005 and then gamma knife radiosurgery later that year. I have been taking the shots since last November. My weight gain has slowly increased after my first surgery, so I have been suffering more with physical pain and other things, so I really needed to do something about my weight even though I have been heavy all my life. Good luck to you and hope this answers some of your questions. If not, let me know. Peace, Judy

    Pituitary adenoma

How does the doctor feel about you taking steroids/cortisol with the band? My relative has that same disease. I've wondered if she could have the surgery because the weight gain has just been debilitating for her! I'm SO sorry you have to deal with it!! Good luck with the band, you deserve it!

    Pituitary adenoma

Hello, I am just wondering if anyone who has a pituitary tumor has had the surgery and if so, did it still work? I currently have an adenoma and the hormones are so bad. I think it has been a major cause of my massive weight gain. I'm scheduled for lapband on Monday!!!!!! Thanks!!!
  11. I'll be happy to be able to play with my soon-to-be 8 year old son. I'm not ready to be granny too quick (LOL) -- my oldest is married already, but her hubby is in military and in Japan, so they're not ready to start yet (whewww) My youngest is more active and I'd love nothing more than to be able to put on a pair of shorts and chase him down!!!!!! I can't wait to get started. I'm already trying to change my mentality about food, etc. My husband and I were able to quit smoking New Year's eve, 2005 (and have stayed off) with the help of a reputable hypnotist. But hence the weight-gain!! My family was harping on us to quit 'for health' reasons, but I told them how healthy are we now? We can get sick & die of complications of smoking or geee---- how healthy is the weight gain and what goes with that? High blood pressure, heart problems and a host of other things!!!!! At least I was happy smoking -- I enjoyed it. I don't enjoy being fat. All the ranting & raving, we've managed to stay off the cigarettes, and we never thought we'd ever be able to do that. So if we can win that battle --- I pray I can win this battle with obesity, too!!!! Thanks for all the great support! I'm so happy to have found you!!!!!!

    Two Questions

Hi I am just full of questions since getting my surgery date for June 5th. I am wondering what if feel like when first waking up from surgery and what it feel like later the same day ? Also what do the fills feel like ? It seems like it is such a tender spot, my surgen said they no longer numb the area because several people said the numbing needle hurt more than the fill needle, just curious . I am so excited I hope and pray that everything goes well, I have three miracles here that I want to be healthy for and hopefully a 4th. Since I am a proud mommy I have to tell you all that I have three beautiful adopted children all adopted the day after birth. Our youngest just turned 1 in April. We have sent our adoption profile to the agency again for one more Hispanic baby girl. I realized that I needed help when I thought of how much I love my children and how much they deserve a healthy mom and I still could not do it on my own. I felt ashamed , once I got passed that feeling I looked at the positive that maybe now next winter when we go sledding I can pull the little one up the hill and be able to breathe. My knees are really bad from my weight so I am so limited to playing on the floor with them. I weigh 240 now and want to get to 150. I cant imagine living my life more comfortable and not having my weight hold me back from every social event I am invited to . I am always so worried of seeing someone from highschool or my past and have them think wow look at her weight gain, so I opt not to go places like that. Anyway sorry to ramble on , just getting it off my chest everyone is gone to bed and this is my relaxing time. I am from Maine, anyone else near me ? Thanks so much for listening
  13. It would be nice if things that could contribute to weight gain were considered as well as things which can be improved by its loss. I had no problem getting approved- my BMI was 43 and I have hypertension and GERD. But I know there are conditons that are at least correlated with obesity (narcolepsy is one of those). While weight loss won't help those specific conditions it does help overall health and helps prevent more problems from occuring. I know hormonal issues might also be that way, etc. Seems like a bit of a catch 22.

    January Bandsters???

Congrats on your new baby! Thats is exciting! Also, don't stress of the weight gain, I know that if you are taking meds it can cause a slight water gain. So, take care of yourself and doctor your cold!

    May 2007 Banders

Hi Soulful Grandma--- First of all, congrats on being banded. I hear ya on the weight gain. I have gained 5 lbs since yesterday. Its crazy, but I think because of the fluids they give you and swelling, is what causes you to gain the weight initially. If I am wrong, someone please let me know because I would liek to know as well why I gained 5 lbs. LOL!

    *APRIL* BANDITS May Challenge

Boo, your day is coming (the plateau break). Never you worry -- it's coming. Dawn, you're very welcome and I'm glad you liked it. Kat, no one in the history of time deserved some time away like you and Rick. I'm so glad you got out on the open road. I'm home from Texas. Too much good food, too little exercise, but great times with friends and no weight gain. Tomorrow it's back to the WL grind. Emotionally, it's very hard for me to not be at work right now. I know I'll get attached to the new job once I'm there, but for the moment, I just miss my friends and the connection I felt working there. I feel unplugged. I'm trying not to eat my way through it.

    HELP !!!(or just listen)

The beauty of the band is it is there waiting on you to work with it. Now that your ready to get back on track, maybe a small fill would be beneficial, or maybe the boost of exercise is just what you need. I'm impressed that you are getting back on track with a 20 lb weight gain, instead of it being 50. Your doing good and have the right mind set. I have read that everyone should have a set point of how much they allow themselves to gain, the expert say 5lbs, once you get up 5 lbs, start back tweaking your diet etc. So 20 lb is not that bad, and it won't take you that long to loose it with exercise. I've made exercise a part of my life now and am on my 4th week of the Body For Life challenge,(working out 6 days a week) I honestly am seeing some muscles come out in my stomach area. And - I am getting collar bones. So, I am a firm believer in Exercise!

    Post Op Diet Bandsters!

Brookelany, I hear you! I also had a little weight gain with the cream Soups, but I switched to Gardennay which are very creamy and no cream. Much healthier. I have to say that I have barely cooked for my family. They eat what I can take out of the freezer and go into the microwave then I get out of there pronto! When do you start muchies? I start Thursday and I hear that it is easier. Hang in there, girl!

8 years POST OP.....I need help

No, you absolutely do NOT. Only about 1/3 have significant "dumping" in the first place, and most of those lose that so-called benefit after a year or two. And the body adapts so that there is less malsorption over time. It is these things, plus the distended, non-adjustable pouch, that causes rebound weight gain in the majority of bypass patients.

8 years POST OP.....I need help

The unfill, rest, refill idea occurred to me too as did the possibility that after 8 years it is highly likely some fill has evaporated and you dont have as much as you think. For those thinking this should work for life - over the years, we do get older and 8 years is almost a decade after all. You do loose your lean body mass over time, and gradually your energy needs decline, normal unbanded people have to work harder and harder to stay the same weight and most people spread with age. Exercise is the best defence against this kind of weight gain, maintaining bone density and muscle mass is vital. Thankfully with a band you have one more weapon in your arsenal against weight gain over time.

Anyone with PCOS? And/or BMI <35?

SeeMeBeMe2: :wow2: You have been through a lot. I'm glad that you were able to find a good doc to treat you. I was diagnosed with PCOS last May. I don't have the cysts or a lot of the other symptoms but no periods and weight gain. Anyway, I was put on birth control. 2 weeks before banding in March, my surgeon told me to stop taking the pills for a month. Well, my period has come on its own since then. I never went back on the pill. I have a gyn appt coming up next month so I'll see what she says. I have a lost a little over 5% of my weight. Even with that small amount its doing a body good!!!!
  24. Umm....im on full Fluid, and i can drink a can of soup....is this bad? I am also starting to be able to drink more....should i REALLY be super hardcore about sips or is it ok...I'm worried....i dont want to be like...on well i feel fine so it must be fine...But thats kind of what im going through. But really...i'm young, so i'm guessing my stomach healed quickly, like yesterday i was out and walked a good 2Kms no biggie...i'm feeling pretty much 100% and im 1 week out of surgery. I mean, it is only liquids, and the operation shouldnt have an effect on liquids should it? All it does is make the stomach smaller for food...but liquids are liquids...they go down easy no matter how small the hole...right? I don't know...You can't stretch your pouch on liquids can you? I have talked to another bander who is my age and he says he can get liquids down just like before...it's only the food thats not (which is what i'm hoping...its the point of the operation) And he's lost over 100lbs....so to me that means something. I'm throwing a lot of questions out there...sorry. I'm sure everything is fine....i'll stop worrying. IMO--as for the weight gain....i wouldnt be worried, i mean, you werent drinking enough calories and such in the Water and Clear Liquids stage...so i'm sure it's your body fighting you now to take back everything you lost...just like the yo-yo diets. But now that you'll start consistantly getting enough calories, just much less than pre-band. You should start losing again.

    First step!

I dreaded telling my husband because he would think the same way I did when I first contemplated this ...it just seemed so extreme, it doesn't now the more I educate myself about it and here all these success stories. He actually found out on his own when he got on our shared computer and kept seeing this web site narrowed down at the bottom. He laughes and doesn't think I'll actually go through with it and of course gave me the lecture about starting today ...eat right exercise etc. and I'll see in a few weeks I'll lose the weight....I kept my 10 year intense weight loss battle mostly to myself I guess. I felt like this last weight gain after a stellar 4 month effort of marathon training and healthy eating just did me in....it was the straw!!!!!
