  1. Here is a warning........thinking about food and looking at food (Food Porn), will cause you to have serious head hunger. It is likely you are actually dealing with that given the hunger hormone was severed when they removed 90% of your stomach. In the early stages it is best to think about just meeting your Protein goals and it sounds like you are able to eat eggs, turkey, chicken.....stuff like that. I know I really struggled with Greek yogurt as well but found flavors that I could tolerate an slowly I actually began to like Greek yogurt. I like the Chobani flips. Same thing with cottage cheese which is a great protein source. I also look for ways to eat ricotta cheese and I now LOVE it. It is one of my favorites. It's even better when you can have fruit which I was allowed at 4 weeks. A grilled peach with a large spoon full of Splenda sweetened or natural honey is absolutely delicious. I use a small amount of honey because I am alergic to artificial sweeteners.
  2. I was able to eat cheese, and Greek yogurt easily, but milk was a no-go. I'm not a milk drinker, but I gave it the good ole college try with bouts of diarrhea following.
  3. Lee, I've always been lactose intolerant and the Chike powder had my stomach cramping horribly and straight to the bathroom when I first discovered it after surgery. I spoke to my nutritionist about it and she had never heard of this happening to her other patients, even those who were lactose intolerant. Because I suffered with constipation after surgery, and it was one of the only brands I could tolerate to drink, I still used it periodically...it usually took care of my constipation problem;-) I've never had a problem with yogurt and some cheeses are okay, but others are not and I'm off to the bathroom. Real ice cream has always been hit or miss with me, sometimes I can tolerate it, other times it gives me problems. I didn't worry so much about the carbs on the full liquid phase, but that's just me, because I was eating so little. I did cream of potato Soup, yogurt, unjury's Protein chicken soup, Jello, more yogurt, and other creamed Soups...pretty boring I know. I didn't do applesauce because pre-op it could give my stomach problems and send me running to the bathroom. Good luck through the rest of this phase!
  4. Thanks for the replies Tiffy, Nikki and Jewels. I think this is just going to be a learning process for me. I did ok on Greek Yogurt this morning followed by Cream of Wheat w/soymilk for lunch. The Cream of Wheat was great after living on Soup and yogurt.
  5. I had a lot of deli lunch meat - ham, chicken, turkey. Cheeses. Yogurt. Eggs if you like them (I don't but lots of people do well with scrambled or hardboiled eggs). Chicken/tuna salad. More robust soups - vegetable soup, chicken noodle soups. A lot of programs ban pasta and white bread (not whole grain which is too robust for your tummy), but at this stage my NUT allowed it. A lot of people have a hard time with pasta and bread though. Edited to add - I was allowed watermelon at this stage. Make sure you pick all the seeds out. Fruits w/o their skin - so a peeled apple, peeled mango. Fruit cups packed in water or juice but not syrup. Veggies should be a bit overcooked. So if you like broccoli it's gotta be mushy rather than firm.

Week 5 post surgery diet & exercise

What phase are you on at 4 weeks? At 4 weeks I was still eating a lot if Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna, turkey, fish, refried Beans, etc. I was cleared to get in the pool once my incisions had healed over at about 4 weeks post-op. Swimming is my favorite exercise and I have been in the pool ever since!
  7. My favorite protein drink is Injury unflavored mixed in to HEB Mootopia skim milk with a squirt of lite chocolate syrup. Very tasty -have one first thing every morning. Followed by 0% Greek yogurt with little fruit and granola. I use a dash of Truvia and let it sit for awhile to soften the granola.
  8. My Dr. Has me on a strict clear liquid diet for 2 weeks post op. In the first week I've been losing 1 to2 lbs a day. Yesterday I lost 5.2 lbs in one day. I was starving all day. I even thought about having some yogurt last night but didn't. I know I didn't burn 15000 calories yesterday. Does 5 lbs in a day seem like too much. I left a message for my Dr but today is surgery day for him.

    Protein Drinks

This is such a popular question on here that I have decided to share my own Protein shake recipes with fellow Bandsters. Jay Robb's whey Protein (vanilla) from Whole Foods Market (seems to be the absolute best tasting and I heard one of the most popular. It also has 25 grams of protein per scoop! It's the only kind I ever use now. Not only for the taste, but because he uses what I feel to be a better alternative sweeter called Stevia in it, instead of Aspartame. ENJOY!!! J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes PHASE 2: Full liquid diet This starts 1 day after surgery NOTE: On the Full Liquid Diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements. Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons. The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids. All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery. Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them. *All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.* My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the Liquid Recipes: 1. Use my snack recipes only once a day 2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list 3. Stay under 1000 calories. 4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used 5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day 6. LOW CARB vs LOW CALORIE

For most proteins (chicken, beef, pork, etc) there are approximately 7g of protein per ounce. For other items you can usually find the protein amount for a serving on the container or look it up in MyFitnessPal. I eat multigrain crackers, whole wheat tortillas, and bagel thins toasted but no rice or pasta yet. I always eat a protein with the carb (fruit or multigrain). Yogurt is also a great source of protein but you have to watch out for the sugar. I used to like the Chobani 100s but now I can't tolerate any yogurt.

    Early Gains?

Good point about sodium. I went from shakes and yogurt to beans and cheese in the purée stage, that might be it, thank you!
  12. CheckYes

    You HAVE to try this!

I'd guess it has about 300 calories, yes? That's not bad although I think 2 tablespoons of splenda seems like a lot of splenda! I think I'd switch to fat free greek yogurt, minimize the splenda and dump the evaporated milk. You could probably throw a scoop of Protein powder in there and double the Protein in it! Does the spinach make it green? I add some spinach in to stuff frequently but sometimes the color just turns me off!
  13. Okay, I only had surgery (sleeve) done 17 days ago, so I'm currently in the soft food phase. The past few days I've been wondering if I'm actually eating too much for this early stage. I've been hitting my Fluid and Protein goals most days this week, and I'm getting my protein from shakes, eggs, cheese, tuna, salmon, Greek yogurt, and hummus. I feel great - plenty of energy and am healing well. But, I'm already eating between 800 and 1000 calories a day. Is that a crazy huge amount for only 17 days after surgery? If so, how do I still meet my protein goals while consuming fewer calories? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Not Enough Calories?

Turkey and chicken are good sources of protein as well. I like slices of deli turkey or chicken around string cheese or even a low fat sesame stick. My little snack in the afternoon is 1/4 can of the chicken breast, chopped up really fine with some cilantro and onion and a smidge of miracle whip, using carrot sticks or sesame sticks as dip. You get a lot of protein, a little veggy or carb, and it holds you over for a long time! The other ideas are protein shots or greek yogurt. Good luck!

    Too much food?

They gave me the ok for veggies/fruit but if they have a tough skin to skip. So I am told no apple peels but just to add a new food every day and see how I tolerate it. So far nothing has bothered me but I am not even to try things like nuts, popcorn or stuff like that. Mostly because I am trying to make low carb choices. Nuts like almonds are a love if mine. i know they are low carb but I don't want to eat too many so I just stay away from them. Before surgery I did low carb for years just to maintain my weight. When I didn't the scale kept rising. So the healthy food/low carb thing us a breeze to me. I have been doing it forever. I can actually eat more kinds of food after surgery. It was kind of exciting to eat whole wheat bread again and yogurt.
  16. Hello, everyone! I was sleeved on 4/15 and have had much success. As of today, I am down approximately 70 lbs. It was the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. My energy level bounced back, my back pain is subsiding. I am going back to the person I once was. However, it seems we've hit a bump in the road. My kids have had a nasty virus/cold turned into upper respiratory track infection. I got the same thing. It appears mine settled into a bronchitis. My asthma acted up and I was given Augmentin for the infection. My surgeon encouraged me to ask my PCP for Levaquin as the augmentin would be too much for my stomach to handle.. So, I've been taking the Levaquin. However, for the pest few days it seems as if I have extreme difficulty in swallowing. It is almost like the feeling you have immediately after your operation. I have to take small bites and chew them super finely. I also have to take small sips as liquid is even bothering me. I called my surgeon who said that I probably have an irritated and inflamed esophageal tract from the post nasal drop and the antibiotics…and not to mention, I started eating salads this week. So, the sickness, the antibiotic, salad, etc….could be causing my system some grief. My surgeon recommended I take a few days and just have soft Proteins (yogurts, cottage cheese, Protein shakes, etc). My question is has anyone experienced this before? I was worried I had a leak, but there's no fever and no constant abdominal pain. I was also wondering if anyone has heard of esophageal stricture and what the symptoms were? It's hard to swallow and when I do it feels as if what I am eating gets stuck and has a very hard time going down> Anyone who has had this or something like it please respond and put my mind to eat. I see my surgeon on Thursday fora routine check up anyway and will bring this yo to her as well but wanted to see what you guys thought. Thank you so much!!!!!!

To fill or not to fill?

@@ErinMarie how much fill do you have in your band right now? I would start by taking a breath. You just had a baby my friend and congratulations on that! Being a new parent (even if this is not your first child) is an awesome task and breast feeding is demanding. I can understand why you may be having an issue with proper band eating mechanics. That said however, you really want to be sure that you are not hurting yourself by getting stuck to often. So the first thing I would want to do is to take some time if you are able to check on your band. To make sure that things are all sitting right and working well. Once you have done that, give yourself a few days of liquid diet to help "reset" things, and give your stomach a chance to heal. If you have gotten stuck even just once, your stomach could be swollen and the space in your stoma could be smaller than you think it is and this could be another reason you are getting stuck more often. Before taking that step to switch to Protein drinks for a few days, consult with a lactation specialist and get their advice. As well as the advice of your pediatrician to be sure that your not feeding the baby anything that could cause an issue. After all a cranky baby is not going to make you feel great If all is well go on a liquid diet as you did pre-op and/or post op and supplement with some non fat greek yogurt, make some sugar free fat free pudding etc. Give your band a break and let it heal and reset, you will start losing weight and most importantly you will feel better. As for your hubby, it's nice to see that he is concerned for your health and well being. Show him that you are concerned for yourself and your family as well by taking the time to check in with your band Dr. and baby Dr. and take the next steps to make you both happy and healthy!! Let us know how it goes!

    8 days post op

I'm 9 days post op. I'm sorry you are feeling hungry. On your full liquid diet can you have yogurt, pudding and cottage cheese? I can. I wouldn't say I feel full, but I'm not hungry either. Sometimes when my family is eating I feel a little pang, but it's emotional. I'm at McDonald's right now and my nephew is in the playland. My sister and he are eating and I sort of want it, but I'm managing with my unsweet tea. Today at Publix I found a Wolfgang Puck Organic butternut squash soup. It was really good and felt satisfied after I had a small amount. Keep trying different things and good luck. This part won't last forever.

8 days out and Gas going away

I am getting hungry but I'm able to control it so far. When I do eat, I am still getting full on much less. I have been snacking some but trying to eat lower cal snacks like a yogurt or a suger free jello.
  24. 4 weeks out. liquids (except water) go down very well, like 10oz at a time. I can easily put away 4-6oz of pureed - especially yogurt. Soft and solid food isn't going well. eggs, about an ounce at a time and I tried Cod last night - maybe 2 tablespoons. Please tell me this gets better soon. I'm so frustrated with eating, I just want to stay in the pureed stage. I know I need to progress, so will it just happen naturally if I just stick with it? I'm not getting sick, just very full very fast.
  25. My biggest thing would be YOGURT. Have always hated the sour milk taste and no matter what brand I tried I could not get past it. THEN I found OIKOS Lemon Meringue! Top with sugar free Cool Whip and VOILA it is Dessert for breakfast!
