So I don't understand. I am in the appeal process but uhc does cover bariatric surgery on my plan and they paid for all my preop labs, sleep study, pft, and consults, but have denied the actual surgery. I am left with thousands of oop costs( my ded is 800 and then coins). I don't understand how they would pay preop services but not the surgery? Any tips on the appeal process with them? Thanks -
Today i found out that i streched my pouch

I'm getting to this party kind of late, so sorry about that. For the original poster - I live in NoVA and used Johns Hopkins' Bariatric Surgery Center up in Baltimore because it was a surgical center of excellence (which is what my insurance required) and I knew I'd get excellent care from them. I'm concerned that you're not being provided with good information from your surgeon and would recommend you consider contacting Johns Hopkins to see if they would see you (and if it is covered by your insurance - I realize that this is a major consideration). There is also a group at Howard University that you could check with. My surgeon was Dr. Anne Lidor - she has offices in Columbia, MD. She is great. Yes, it would be a haul to get there, but I do it. Any of the surgeons in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Bariatric practice will be good. I hear great things about Dr. Schweitzer's skill as a surgeon even though his bedside manner might be a bit rough. A colleague of mine used him and has been very happy with his gastric bypass. Somebody else mentioned the quality of your Protein supplements, which is another good point. I use unjury - it was highly recommended by Johns Hopkins nutritionists and I'm lucky enough to enjoy it. I use their protein powders with unsweetened almond milk. -
Anyone having surgery in May

JolenB- I am not digging the bariatric advantage, vanilla or caffe late. I did watch to gnc lean25 chocolate. It has 50 more calories, but it's a lot tastier and lighter. I guess maybe those 50 calories are the reason u can't. I am on my 5th day of liquids and have lost 10 lbs. -
June 2014 Sleevers Check In!
LivingProof replied to SnohoGal98296's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, Everyone! My surgery was June 18, and I have, unbelievably, lost 18 pounds! Just had to share.... No complaints here, except heartburn. Big complaint. Any suggestions? One thought about tummy settling: one of my surgeon's bariatric team members suggested cocoa. You can have this even on the "clear liquid" phase. It works--but be careful! That caffeine will hit your system and keep you awake FOREVER. (I learned the hard way....) Best to everyone!!! -
Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!
GBHeron replied to timetobefree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My name is Kris and my surgery is scheduled for November 15th. I'm on my 9th day of the bariatric diet. I'm 54, live in Northern Virginia, have a husband of 20 years, a 16 year old son and 15 year old daughter. Surgery will be at a military facility. I started my bariatric journey on May 22 at 204 pounds (high of 212) and have lost 23 pounds so far. I had planned all along for the Gastric Band, but during the past month or so after meetings with my surgeon and support group, have switched to the gastric sleeve. I'm nervous and concerned more about my family and Thanksgiving than about me. I need to keep my anxietly level under control so have planned a bunch of events and deadlines to keep me occupied for the next week. That's my nutshell story. I wish us all success! -

Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!
Boston George replied to timetobefree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello November sleevers!! as some of you know I was sleeved Monday. was released Thursday!y. The surgery was textbook. I woke in recovery in some pain, more discomfort than anything else. Very sore. They gave me some diludid. I woke up in my room that night with vicious dry mouth. Every time I tried to move it was so uncomfortable. For a brief moment laying in my bed a couple hours after surgery I asked "why did I do this" Then a wonderful nurse realized I was uncomfortable. She got me a cold sponge lolly pop to use on my lips and tongue. That, mixed with painkillers I received I began to change my tune :-) I woke up the day after surgery feeling better. Went for the leak test and passed. I was so happy bout that. Then they removed my catheter (guys worst nightmare) After said catheter was removed life got a whole lot better. Because I passed my leak test I was able to have water and diet juice or decaf coffee and tea. Even ate some yogurt. I was feeling much better at this point. Still sore of course, I mean I just had major surgery. I tried to fight the pain meds and that was my biggest mistake. I don't want everyone to think I was in excruciating pain, it was more discomfort from the gas pains and Soreness from the incision sites and external drain. Side note : Dr Kim is a brilliant surgeon. I honestly believe she is at the top of her field . My incisions sites look like tiny scratches, they are so clean and are healing incredibly. I want to take another minute to acknowledge her personality and her bedside manner. She made time to see me personally 4 times after surgery. With her hectic schedule that meant alot. She explained my leak test In detail to me and my mom. She explained that when I woke up it wouldnt be pain so much as a pressure in your chest. Boy was she right! So after Getting some fluids in I started to feel much better. I went for a few walks with a physical therapist that actually made me feel better, to be up and moving. They bring an assortment of bariatric fluids to your room 3 times a day, to see which one you can tolerate. Plain yogurt never tasted so good! The I had my drain taking out after realizing I was healing properly. I was able to take a shower and all was well Thank you all for asking about me..I just saw some of your posts and felt I had to let you know..It means alot to know people Ive nenver met care about my well being..I thank you all again, and hope to talk with you all often.. -
Anyone get sleeved in May?
GinaCampbell replied to skinnyme13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Failed my pre op assessment today. My bloodwork didn't pass. My sleeve is scheduled for the 31st but I won't know until the 27th if the surgeon will go ahead with a high platelet count. So upset. Mostly because my records show that my platelets were high consistently over the past year while on the bariatric pathway. I only found out today how high they have been. I brought this subject up in April and was told "not to worry" and that the team felt the high platelet count wasn't "significant". Then they blindside me today, ten days pre op. No one can "make a decision" due to work schedules so I have to simply wait it out. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Which blender should I get?
LisaMergs replied to AuntJoJo64's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love my "THAT" kind too! Yep. Agreed. I already had a Ninja- and used it a bit in the beginning for Bariatric purposes, but now it's just for regular use when I'm cooking A good old shaker/blender bottle with the mixer thing that looks like a jack is perfect for shakes- doesn't make too much air, easy to clean and take on the go. Mine has a bottom part that unscrews and holds the Protein powder dry until I need it. Easy Peezy. Foamy Protein shakes suck lol Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hey guys. I have no problems drinking the protein shakes, but I am getting mighty sick of them after three weeks of almost nothing else. I found this bariatric surgeon on YouTube who makes great videos on all sorts of topics related to WLS. I’m pasting a link here to his suggestions for a better protein shake. For those of you who don’t tolerate the store bought ones, maybe this would be better? It’s at least healthier.

Frequently Asked Questions

The noisy tummy is totally normal - I think mine "talked" to me for a good 2-3 months post op and even now it talks to me occasionally, especially when I eat something it doesn't like. The always hungry issue you're having could be any number of things. It could be head hunger, acid reflux, or even thirst. I'd start by taking an antacid and drinking a glass of Water - if that doesn't take care of it the most likely culprit is head hunger. Hope that helps! I would definitely go back to your surgeon if you're having sleeve related issues. I know my surgeon's office is super busy as well, but if I call super early or email the nurse I usually get a faster response time, have you tried that? Your surgeon has been specifically trained to deal with any bariatric issues you may be having, and while I'm sure your PCP is great, they're not always aware of the minute details and intricacies of our new tummies. -

Until you're used to sipping, portion your Water. When I was discharged, the bariatric coordinator gave me a few of the little measuring cups they use to dole out medicine. They were two ounce cups, so I would take four sips. After a couple of days, I was able to gauge my sips without measuring. If they didn't give you any of these, use a shot glass or measuring spoon. Hang in there, you'll get it. Six months out, I can swallow a pretty good amount of water at one time. I was a guzzler but you do adapt. -
Please read this and help me. I need to know i'm not alone.

I am you. I had LB surgery Dec 08 and lost 80lbs. since I've gained back 40lb, maybe more now. I can eat OUT OF SIGHT and nothing stops me, i.e., slipped band. This "tool" I paid CASH for wasn't going to be a fix-all - it helped me, but then I lost my support tools, gym, groups, counseling/therapy, etc. I'm now trying to get converted to the sleeve and when I hear stories like yours it just scares the bee-jessus out of me. Just last week I consumed a large cheesesteak - wasn't even hungry. 1/2 the time I eat its because its "noon" or dinner time or my kids/husband are eating. I'm addicted to food and I need to be addicted to exercise and changing my bad habits. I don't even know if I need the LB removed and sleeve done b/c like I said - 1/2 the time I eat I'm not even hungry. If I made healthy choice, no cheesesteak or pizza or pasta...I'd probably be able to loose on my own. Its sad to hear how much mind struggle we have and the bigger question is how do we conquer it? Food is a drug to me...I'm going to see a new bariatric doctor in liue of removing the band and doing the sleeve with insurance this time. I paid 14k for my band in 08 and feel like a complete failure. I understand. what are you doing for support and guidance? -
Hello, I'm almost there as well. I have AETNA which requires a 3 month waiting period. I completed my psych eval, and exercise assessment this week. My 3rd NUT class is June 3 and my EDG is scheduled for June 7, with my last class being July 8. I'm hoping to get scheduled for the end of July or the beginning of August. sleep apnea and cardiologist tests were done by my PCP before referring me to bariatric surgeon. Was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, but was a candidate for surgery without it due to my BMI. My insurance requires 3 month of nutrition classes, sleep apnea, cardiologist, psych eval, exercise assessment and clearance letter from PCP which are all done. After next week all requirements will be done except my last NUT class.

June - July sleevers?
BloomSeason replied to betterme38's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So happy to have found this site, and especially each of you! I have just started this process and I'm praying I am in June, or July. Maybe that's overly optimistic but my insurance and the bariatric hospital in my town each seem really efficient. I have a 37 BMI so I will have to have a diagnosed comorbidity to qualify for the surgery. Finger crossed that goes smoothly. And fingers crossed that each of you have a healthy journey too!!! Help! Can't stand Protein Drinks
Shawn Pettigrew replied to Elisha1015's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I ordered the cookbook from the Bariatric foodie that has tons of recipes for different shakes. She uses sugar free coffee syrups,PB2, and sugar free pudding mixes to "spice up" the powders. I have a bunch of stuff on order and can't wait for something different other than premier shakes. http://www.amazon.com/Bariatric-Foodie-Perfect-Protein-Shakes/dp/1480101095/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y/189-0106789-6371661 -
After Surgery, Do Any Of You Struggle With Still Eating Too Fast ???
iamcindylou replied to marketingdude's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My bariatric nurse told me that she had a patient that was in front of the tv watching the super bowl with a bowl of pretzels and was "mindless" eating. He wasn't paying attention and was "woofing down" and ended up at the hospital. So the lesson learned is no mindless eating! Old habits die hard! I get banded on June 5th! :0) -
Top Doctor's Opinion re Revision options-Posted on Complications Forum
mrsto replied to Baba Wawa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
At least if there are serious complications, the procedure can be reversed; lap band removed & you're on your way. Can't say that once 75% of your stomach is removed, or your digestive system has been rewired. My surgeon is not a huge fan of the band, either. I don't know that many bariatric surgeons are. But even with all of its potential ongoing problems, it's STILL less risky than the other options. I remain hopeful..... -
I should've never left the VSG forum....DS people scare me :(
feedyoureye replied to brandynd's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went for my pre-op surgeons visit today. My surgeon, who is the head of the bariatric dept. of a teaching and research university, has been doing it for many years...told me today that his thought so far is that the sleeved person is the most likely to have weight re-gain in their future (I believe he meant compared to RNY). He also said that he believed that from his perspective, you could be a person that did not gain your weight back with the sleeve, but it would take more work from your side (not the sleeves side) to do so. That RNY weight loss is easier to keep off in the long run. He also said that he knows that there is not enough time elapsed to see how it will go for the sleeve yet, but that is his guess. He also said that the size of your bougie does not make a big difference, eating habits are the biggest part of being successful, and the WHOLE stomach is pretty stretchy. He said it is important to change habits, or when the restriction reduces, the old habits will still be there and up goes the weight. He said not all people will re-gain, but the ones that are always looking for excuses as to why the sleeve is not working properly, is the wrong size, are looking in the wrong place for success. He also said that RNY patients have similar problems, blaming the size of their stomas, and such instead of looking at their eating and exercise habits. To his credit, he will not put the band on anyone anymore. Just too many problems in their future. I told him about this site, hope he checks it out! He does 5 year or longer followup on his patients. I just signed up for a research project tracking my sleeve into the future. -
I had ventral hernia repair three months after VSG. My bariatric surgeon performed it. To make this repair at the same time is considered a "dirty procedure". If you develop a leak from VSG, for example, you can imagine how bad that'd be for a second surgery site with several incisions. Also, the hernia repair heals better after some weight loss, as fat is plugging the hole now and distorts the opening. Again, not hiatal hernia so that matters. It took nine tacks and several internal stitches attached to muscle to close my hernia. It was a small hernia. Finally, I would in no way would i want to be recovering from both surgeries at the same time. OMG! Hernia recovery is 2-4weeks. The surgeon isn't making more money either. The same procedure codes are billed. The hospital might make more, though do to two preop/postop stays. HTH. Good luck to you! life is a journey, not a destination; so, stop running -H.D. THEROUX

Are you getting a new driver's license or work ID since losing weight or once you reach goal?

I was sleeved on 8/19 and my license expires in November. Even though I could have renewed it several months before the expiration date, I plan on going on the last day possible (I will be nearly 3 months post op at that time). I can't wait to see my progress by then! -

For my work ID, im leaving it as is. It's the old me, but on a good day. And I just really don't like taking pictures. And I just don't feel like dishing over $$ to update my pic. I was THANKFUL my license was up for renewal in May, so I RAAANNNN to the DMV to update it. I have hated having to pull it out. It was a BAD pic. I am so happy and proud of the new me and my new pic! And now the guys at the airport won't stare at it, then at me, then at it again. yes it's me, now let me on my flight!! I'm not one to hold onto the past. I didnt feel the desire to hold onto anything from my past, the old me included. I never really was that person therefore I do not need a reminder. My life started on Sept 9th 2011 -
