    Food Waste

I hate to throw out food so I have been just buying the smaller size options at the grocery store so that I only buy what I will use before it goes bad. Like just a few individual yogurts and just a half pound turkey from the deli, etc.

    Any South Florida Sleevers!

@@ssflbelle Hi ladies! I had my sleeve on Monday the 19th, with Dr. Shillingford. He is s super guy, as well as the hospital staff! I was worried for the usual pre surgical reasons. But I am very happy I finally did this for me. I have been taking it slow, walking, and eating. I have to say, from what I have read Dr. Shillingford's pt have a more liberal eating schedule post op- I have been eating yogurt, cottage cheese, Soup ( I bought the unjury Protein to add to everything) very thinly sliced chicken breast,(chew , chew chew) and Protein drinks. Sipping is hard but you only forget ONCE. Eating slower is a new one for me as well. I ws planning to go back to work on Monday , but Im thinking I was being way to ambitious thinking that .....maybe Wednesday.
  3. I've been finding that I am wasting a great deal of food due to expiration dates expiring. And I made a Riccotta Bake this evening, and I am thinking that there is no way in hell am I going to use all those materials before they go bad. Aside from making a giant batch and freezing it (I guess I could), has anyone found any good ways to prevent food from spoiling? I tossed like 5 yogurts today, and about 1/3 of a gallon of 2% milk (for coffee, so I don't use a lot each day), and I see a lot more stuff that will go bad before I get a chance to eat it.

    Surgery day!

I don't have a dog. The landlord says no, which I am ok with. I have had one in the past when I was home with the kids, but now that I am working, it would not work for me anyway. So what's for dinner tonight? I have done pretty well with yogurt for Breakfast, then some deli turkey and fresh mozzarella for lunch. Now I am wondering what to do about dinner. I am sipping on a Protein drink trying to get close to my goal.

Am I the only one with Diarrhea?

I unfortunately expereinced that for about three and a half weeks. I have PCOS and I think mine was due to hormonal flucuation issues. The problems began on day 1 of my first TOM post surgery and persisted up until the second TOM. I tried variations in my diet and nothing really alleviated the problem. I didn't come close to meeting my Protein and Water goals during that time and could not tolerate any Vitamins, but the priority really shifted to just finding foods I could eat without causing huge stomach upset. Anything with too much liquid caused a problem. I'd wake up three to four times a night to go to the bathroom, and during the day had to run there after I ate or drank anything. I was really worried about becoming severely dehydrated. I began drinking Pedialyte (which tastes vile) during the week when it was the worst. I sipped Gatorade, too. It's not a very healthy drink if you're not a serious athlete completing a workout, but at the time it was what my body was receptive to having and it helped me to get some calories and electrolytes in. For me eating fruit with a higher water content, like watermelon, was a way of getting some hydration in along with actual food. I stopped with the Protein shakes and started having more soft solids like mashed potatoes mixed with green Beans. I wasn't getting in that many calories or fat a day and my weight loss definitely stalled, but that was a secondary issue. My stomach problems were dominating my life for a while, but I felt confident they would eventually subside and they did. I can eat normally now. Hallelujah! I don't have ready to drink protein shakes anymore, but I make smoothies using plain Greek or Bulgarian yogurt, a scoop of Protein powder, a bit of berries, and some kale every morning for Breakfast to get me started. I think the Probiotics from the yogurt and from the supplement I take helps soothe my stomach.

Anyone having surgery in Oct ?

I went back on Monday which was 13 days after surgery. I teach first grade, so I'm moving a lot. I did fine. I was really tired Monday-Wednesday nights. But the last two have been better. I pack a ton of stuff in my lunch bag just in case: Greek yogurt, sf pudding, peanut butter/crackers, string cheese, protein shake. It has worked so far! Good luck! You can have crackers and chesse I was told baby type food until I'm 4 weeks out just are you able to handle the chesse and crackers? My surgery was Oct 5th and I'm hoping I'm able to tolerate that type of food soon.

Found a great new alternative to ice cream!

@@BLERDgirl -- Oh, oh, oh, for a celebration? Like sitting home on Saturday night watching TV? The real thing all the way. For no occasion in particular? Like sitting home on Monday night watching TV? Then I'd go for a fat-free yogurt. There was a time I might have tried substitutes for many foods, but somehow I've come to ignore them. Thanks, though, really, for the recommendation. If I were to consider it, I have a feeling that your take on it is reliable.

Found a great new alternative to ice cream!

The comments have been about taste and, since that's got to be subjective, I was curious about the consistency and texture, expecting that it must have a vaguely gritty mouth-feel and be gummy at the same time. The ingredients info at the Arctic Zero website suggests an unpleasant texture. If I'm not going to have the real thing, I'd rather have a nonfat yogurt. Chacun à son goût.
  9. Once you make the sincere decision to lose weight and get healthy....everything will fall in line. Using myfitnesspal.com is a cheap and easy way to track your calories, weight and exercise. I stress that it's free....and super easy to use. Nothing will motivate you like success will. That being said...go ahead and lose weight now. There are simple diets to follow and you will be acclimating yourself to the way of eating you'll be doing for the rest of your life when you are post-op. The simple diet consists of chicken, fish, meats, Greek yogurts, fresh vegetables, some whole grains and some cheeses and maybe nuts on occasion. Measure your food so you can input accurate amounts into the myfitnesspal tracker. Keeping the carb count down and eating at a calorie deficit (versus your bmr ) will absolutely lead to weight loss. Throw in some frequent walking and you are going to add to effect. Getting your mind wrapped around the needed changes and getting used to following a plan now will really help you later on. You are going to do great.

Wow that's a lot of protein. I'm only getting in 4 oz of protein 3x day, that's only 12 oz a day. The bottle is 26g of protein. I'm finding one bottle and an 1oz from another bottle a day. My foods are yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese. That's it for now. I'm nowhere near that amount of protein. This will be my last week of protein shakes. My bypass diet says I'll only be getting my protein from my foods. However, I'm only getting in 1/4 cup of food 3x a day. For my 3rd week I can have eggs, tuna, salmon, toast, crackers. Salmon is 14g of protein for 2 oz. That's a lil over 50g and adding the eggs... I guess I can get close 60g of protein. I'll take any suggestions. I can't do Isopure or Proteinh20 because I'm allergic to whey protein.

    October List of Surgery's

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. I was only off for a week from work. I literally returned to work 1 week after surgery. I only did half days though, but I'm exhausted once I'm home and I take a very long nap before picking up my daughter from school. My recovery has been amazing! I only had gas pain when I was discharged, which was the day after surgery. The gas pain was the WORST!!!!!! At home, during the night, I'd walk and walk to help subside. I took Gas X, which moved it, but it wouldn't pass. Felt like a brick was sitting in stomach and back. By Thursday it was just about gone. My RNY was on Oct 12th, I've lost 14 lbs. It's tough getting the fluids in. I've lost my taste for my Mios and Crystal Lights, jello, and the popsicles....so it's just water and protein shakes. I've tried a few baby spoonfuls of yogurt and very loose oatmeal. That's been great! I haven't been hungry at all, I wasn't missing food or anything until yesterday. I started craving a grilled cheese sandwich from Great Harvest.???? Oh well. In week 3, my diet includes an egg or 1/2 an egg, canned/packaged tuna and salmon. 1/4-1/2 toast or crackers, which begins on Tuesday. I haven't done much exercise yet, I've had one minor complication. Well let's hope it continues to be minor. Monday is was planning to go walking on the treadmill. Something.....not too fast. However, after I dropped my daughter off to school, I realized I was very winded and had an accelerated heartbeat. Has anyone else experienced this? My surgeon's office had me go to the ER. They thought possibilities of pneumonia or blood clot. Thankfully it was neither. Not really sure it was. Maybe just my body still healing. Please share with me if you experienced any of this. I haven't had an accelerated heart rate but there's no way I could really exercise yet. (Had surgery Oct 19) I find short walks are about it for now; however, I have these little bursts of energy (woo hoo I just bolted up the stairs!) only to be met later with exhaustion (I walked from the chair to the fridge and whew I need a nap!). I'm with you on the liquids. Little bites of yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese but mostly it's oh yummy pass me another protein shake! Haha

    Old New guy pre op

Most of time time the first two weeks following bypass is: Week 1 - Clear liquids only SF Jello, broth, Water, crystal lite, watered down apple juice, SF Popsicles Week 2 - full liquids and clear liquids- same as above plus creamed Soups, yogurt, Protein shakes (no more watered down Apple juice) Week 3 - the will move you to puréed if all goes well. You should ask your surgeon for his/her food plan because they all seem to differ but they should give you some idea of exactly what to eat when. In terms of meds, you should try to get yourself the liquid versions for the first 3 months or chewable if you can. Otherwise you will be crushing anything that is bigger around than a pencil eraser. This improves over time but those first 3 months it is pretty swollen in there. I don't use a blender because I buy Premier Protein ready made shakes instead of all the powders. When I had the puréed stage I used either my food processor or I had a nutrition bullet. I have since given that nutri bullet away. The best of luck to you! I hope all goes well.
  13. I don't trust the "protein" ice creams and specially formulated deserts. I just use Fage yogurt with Torani sugar free syrup for flavor and freeze it. More protein than these ice creams.

    Hotel stay after surgery.

my stage 2 diet was fairly easy to follow. yogurt no fruit . Protein drinks, a lite progresso or healthy choice Soup emulsified to get rid of the lumps. your doctor or dietician should give you their list of foods you are allowed. the whole thing about bypass is the time after surgery you need to let the sutures inside heal just as you had to do with your sleeve

    Ham and cheese roll ups

Hahahaha! Yes, the first time I ate my "soft" foods, it felt a bit like a brick in my chest. I learned that I needed smaller bites and even more chewing than I thought. I've tried mustard, a bit of mayo, plain greek yogurt, and other sauces, but I tend to prefer my ham and cheese plain. FYI I'm 5 weeks post bypass.

    Got milk?

I love milk. But am severely lactose intolerant since surgery 2/2015. My doc told me to keep trying it once in awhile to see if I can readjust but so far, no luck. Yogurt has been a good substitute. I need to try the lactose free milk, but just can't imagine it being the same. Milk has been ok with my doc since day one due to the nutritional value, even with the sugar content.

  19. Seriously try a home cooked meal instead of lean cuisines. Real food is not only more filling, it's more nutritious. Half a poached chicken breast over chopped spinach with some of the broth to keep it moist is easy to make & you can cook a batch to eat over the course of a week. A chopped hard boiled egg made into egg salad and using half plain Greek yogurt & half mayo is another nutritionally sound meal. Lastly you are a fairly recent postoperative. It's not unusual to not feel restrictions early on. Keep in mind you had this surgery to change eating habits. Try to stick to the typical recommendation of 2 - 4 ounces. If you are feeling what you interpret as hunger, try using a PPI such as omeprazole. Do not test the limits by overeating early on.
  20. I'm on day 5 post op, and have been drinking tons of water (about 50 oz) and getting in the 60grams of protein, and even added 4 oz of yogurt once a day. But I am legit hungry. Does anyone else experience this? I know they say it just means you're thirsty but I'm taking in so much fluid and my stomach still growls.. Is it just me?

What can you eat dip with?

I've been thinking about this. My local grocery store sells large and thin pita pockets that are 100 calories each. I'm thinking you could cut one up into quite a few little triangles (16-24) and the bake em with salt & pepper (maybe garlic or onion powder) in a Pam coated baking pan. Combine with a Greek yogurt dip and you'd have more than you possibly eat without going over 150 calories.

    Hummus

I have been vegetarian probably 15/20 years now. I switched in the late 90's. I haven't had any issues getting in my protein. I supplement but also eat a lot of eggs & Greek yogurt. Otherwise I get my protein from whole grains like quinoa and dark green veg. I had s super easy surgical experience and a sleeve seemingly made of steel. I was allowed to eat anything as tolerated at 6weeks post op. I eat salads nearly daily. Raw veg has never caused a problem for me. I am considering going vegan once I hit goal.
  23. Does anyone else here feel really hungry when they are bored? I am not busy at my job so I get really bored sitting at my desk for 8 hours every day. When I have nothing to occupy me, I find myself thinking about all the foods I can't have then I feel insatiable hunger. I know this is just head hunger but it feels so real. I try to find things to do like go for a walk or whatnot but I'm pretty limited on things to keep me busy. My doctor has a pretty strict post-op diet which doesn't allow soft foods until Day 36. I'm on day 23 and found myself eating some tiny cubes of soft cheese earlier just because I felt so hungry. I've tried snacking on healthier things like Greek yogurt or cottage cheese but it seems like my hunger isn't satisfied unless my taste buds are satisfied. This is exactly the kind of behavior that made me overweight in the first place. I don't think three tiny cubes of cheese will hurt me but I just don't want to fall back into old habits so soon. Any tips on how to combat this fake hunger and how to make healthier choices? PS I only experience these feelings at work when I'm so bored and stuck for 8 hours. When I'm home or out and about, I have no trouble sticking to my diet.

    What's the best protein bar?

I just had my first egg today (scrambled) at 10am. I really have not been eating much food but jello!! I was thinking of have some Greek yogurt tonight.
  25. @@LuckyLady101515 Good for you for wanting to "pay it forward" so quickly. Glad you are doing well and figuring out what works for you. I remember the glorious day when I was first allowed ground meats and Beans and I headed off to Wendy's for some chili. It was like eating real food after a few weeks of broth, Soup, yogurt and Protein shakes! Glorious! If you need some ideas for foods in the puree stage to keep up the variety, I highly recommend the recipes on this page: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html The Baked Ricotta kept me sane!
