  1. I'm 7 days post op and still on liquids. My doc said next week I can start mushies or soft foods. I've lost 10 pounds and am so afraid it's all going to come back on when I enter the real food (mushed as it may be) stage because i cant exercise yet. I have "my fitnesspal" app on my iPad that helps me so much with cal, fat, carbs, calories burned, etc and I'm going to try to keep it around 800-1,000 cal/day. Is that too much? I'd love to hear other people's stories when they transisitioned from liquids to mushies...thanks
  2. I started out 1 pound heavier then you. Surgery was May 10, 2011, and I'm just now down 40 pounds. More than a pound a week average, not bad. But yeah, I read some posts and wonder what the heck I'm doing wrong.
  3. Okay this one really goes out to those veteran sleevers. So, I am 13 months out now. I have lost pretty much all I could safely lose (a lot of people think ive gotten too thin) I'm getting to the point of becoming UNDER weight (which is hilarious frankly...ive never been thin in my life...literally). That's really the problem. I have started training for this 1/2 marathon and the running is making me lose weight to a point that is making me nervous. I am already wearing a SMALL right now...i just dont know what to do. No one really seems to understand--people say stupid stuff like "just eat more"....as though I could even if I wanted to?? I mean dont get me wrong I eat 3 or 4 meals a day...and I do eat very healthy meals...but i just dont know how to replace those calories I burned of running safely. My mother says shit like "go eat a grilled cheese"...which makes me crazy! My trainer says go drink weight gain powder...which goes against all logic in my book. My surgeon said (btw Im a 6'0 man) I dont want you to get into the 160s...if you do call the office. well that was 3 weeks ago...i weighed 173 then...NOW in just 3 weeks i lost 10 lbs. I'm losing my mind here. and frankly, am getting a little scared...i dont know how to make it stop. But, at the same time I WANT to do this race...for me...because ive never been able to run more than a few feet in my life without being out of breath. What do yall do?? please help me.
  4. From the album: ECarr

Coming out of 2015 I feel really good about the new year. I'm actually wearing an XL jacket and sweater. I haven't been a 1X in over 10 years. And this is my first scarf, I like scarfs ????.
  5. Well today is my 3rd day since surgery and I am starting to feel a little better. Fortunately, I did not have issues with gas pains although I took a the Gas-x strip anyway. My main isssue has been soreness-but that's getting better too. Getting all my liguids in has been a real effort since I get that sensation that I need to stop. I haven't been real hungry-butthe bacon that my daughter is cooking right now does smell good! lol We have been invited to a friends BBQ-no one there knows about my surgery. The only person that knows at this point is my hubby, but I eventually tell my daughters (19 & 24). ANyway I have mixed feelings about the BBQ-part of me wants to get out of the house. The other part thinks it might be too soon after surgery. I won't be able to eat at all-we told them I have a stamach virus which isn't a complete lie since I have Gastretious (sp). I guess I'll take a shower and see how I feel.
  6. Great question! I am a little worried though. Have you guys heard of vertical banded gastroplasty or "VBG" also known as stomach stapling surgery. I have been reading many forums and threads online about people who are 10-12 years out and their staples start giving them serious issues. I hope that this doesn't happen with gastric sleeve when people start becoming 10 or more years out from surgery. I am hoping the newer technology prevents that from happening.

    Date Set!

First I would see how you feel. If you can barely shower without using all your energy, you may want to sit this one out. If you are managing your daily activities ok without feeling too dumpy, I'd recommend you bring most of your own food with you or purchase it while you're there. 10 days out I was on purée but was having a hard time tolerating anything thicker than a Protein shake. Bring a big Water bottle and have it with you at all times. HYDRATE! I would bring enough Protein shakes for the trip (or buy them when you get there.) You can basically live off those things if you need to, so nutrition wise, that's probably all you'll need. Bring all your Vitamins, some pain meds, and remember to rest when you feel tired. That's a lot to put your body through. Interestingly, I was most tired after sitting up for so long bc it works both abs and back. And your abs will be weak. You'll probably be fine, but if you're nervous, talk with your surgeon. Good luck on your surgery I've lost 26 lbs and am just getting out of that post op fog... Beginning to appreciate my sleeve. It might take awhile for you to get to that point in the beginning. Recovery has been harder than I thought. So don't push yourself. I jus went back to work and, although I am making it through the day, I am completely exhausted by the end of my shift. Wish I had two more weeks to rest, but such is life! Let me know if I can answer any ore questions!

How does this not slow down our metabolism?

Severe calorie restriction will slow our metabolisms temporarily, but it won't shut them down! I don't have the reference here in front of me but I believe that the slow down can be as much as 10% in some people. That's a lot different than "completely shutting down your metabolism" as people would lead you to believe. I have read and I don't know how true this one is... that the slow down continues to last half as long again as the length of time you were restricting calories. That's why it's important to be very controlled when increasing your calories. Also, the more weight you have to lose the less you can eat because we have TONS of fuel just waiting to be converted into energy!

    2/25/09 Smoke and Mirrors

I’m always amazed by what I start off thinking I’m going to write and then what I end up writing about here. It’s the thing I like best about blogging…not only do you get your feelings/questions out, but it’s often a total surprise. Today was no exception. I started off wanting to explore something that came up in my last blog…the fact that at the same time I hate to look at my current self in the mirror, I don’t feel fat…in my head…and how could I still be constantly surprised by photos of me? ‘Nuff said about that!!! As I went looking for a photo of a fun house mirror (to illustrate my body dysmorphic disorder...or maybe it’s just my split personalities) I found this out: DRESSING ROOMS AROUND THE COUNTRY HAVE ‘SKINNY’ MIRRORS!!! Oh yes!! They’re scamming us!!! I finally am having a good day clothes shopping! I look like a size 16 in my size 22 jeans at the store, so as I’m skipping happily around the dressing room I decide to buy 3 pair, and come home to find my size 22 butt looks like an elephant wearing dolls clothes. Here’s how they do it…tip a mirror forward and you look short and fat, tip it backward (even slightly) and you look taller and thinner. And to make it worse, some stores even use slightly curved mirrors…oh yea, just like the FUN HOUSE ones! It’s all an illusion…it’s a house of mirrors!! Is it illegal…no…they make no promises that you’ll look the same at home as you do in their dressing room. I’m sure I’m the last one on Earth to find this out. As I found article upon article upon this I was finding an increased hatred of dressing rooms. Remember my ‘love’ of dressing rooms anyway (one word…sportsbra…or maybe that’s two words); then I also found the results of a study on women and dressing rooms: 64 percent said trying on clothes in public lowers their self confidence 10 percent have cried in dressing rooms about the way they look 40 percent of the women have bought something that was too small, hoping it would look good once they lost weight 14 percent of the women have refused sales help so they wouldn't have to reveal their size 41 percent have started working out after a shopping trip and the best one of all… 15 percent have accidentally ripped or gotten stuck in a garment that was too small I’m just glad I’m not alone…and I’m staying OUT of dressing rooms for awhile…at least until I KNOW I’m skinnier…I have enough body distortion issues.
  10. When it's hot outside I make the following: I scoop Protein powder or one container of Greek yogurt I cup of frozen tropical fruit 10-12oz of calorie free liquid 4 ice cubes. Blend the jeepers out of it and enjoy a summertime smoothie--approx. 180cal and 15-24+gr of protein. Yummy and so cooling. Good luck and keep cool. Prayers going up.

Yep we had to drink protein as soon as we got home from our surgery. They told us it was the single most important thing we had to do. The day of surgery we just had to get as much as we could down in 2 oz portions and then the day after surgery we had to aim for 50-70 grams of protein. That's actually what turned us on to the slim fast shakes. They are only about 10 oz with 20 protein which is really great.
  16. This is the week, I feel like my journey REALLY began. I began a self-imposed liquid diet(mostly liquid anyhow). I got my surgery date! (July 2nd Yay!) I lost 10 pounds. I have been really pushing myself to workout. I just got back from krogers where I parked at the back of the parking lot, and walked as long as I could inside before getting a shopping cart to lean on - and then I couldn't find what I was looking for so literally spent like 25-30 minutes walking today.. Now last week I couldn't walk around the block. I've also been doing Ultimate Fighting Challenge on Xbox Kinect almost nightly, and am trying to start up turbo-jam. After I get through w/ turbo-jam I'm going to begin doing P90X - that'll be um...interesting. Each night before bed I do stair pushups as well and squats in front of the stairs(so I can fall back and sit down when I need to lol). I started w/ 5 stair pushups and am now at 20 on the 6th stair up. When I get to 50 I'm moving down a stair. My diet has been really good and I just feel really on track and motivated...though could always use more SVs and NSVs lol to keep me motivated - I just hope I'm building a lot of muscle which will weigh more but in the end help me lose more too. I'm attaching my weekly food/exercise journal - I think I did pretty good...except for Friday and Saturday. Each day is a new day, and I'm finding this forum to be a HUGE wealth of information and motivation. I think the forum is almost as good as the surgery itself! - -well not the forum, but the people in it, and the community here. Thanks for welcoming me! 17. I had my surgery on 10-21 and I still eat too fast sometimes. I take very small bites and I will put my fork down and will actually push my plate away!! I haven't thrown up lately, which is awesome!! I hate throwing up. If you do too, you will learn to slow down.....

    Worried

I was sleeved on Sept. 10, so I am a little over 3 months out and that is about all I can do. About 5 bites and I am full....depending on how thick or dense the food it. My dr. told me that is normal and that at about 6 months I will do about 6-8 bites and then at a year I will be able to eat 3-4 ounces. He said then I will be maxed out and I should never do more than 3-4 ounces so I do not stretch my sleeve out. I'm curious to hear some of the other's advice. I know each dr. varies on what their expectations are. Good luck and God bless!
  19. On my intake form I have to list three diet attempts over the past two years. I've only used MFP in that time frame. I've lost and gained a few times during that time. I have spreadsheets with all my weigh ins and details on how many calories I was eating, etc. Do you think that will be enough for them? I have WW documents going back off and on 10 years back, but the latest attempt was early 2014, so just out of the two year range. I hope this doesn't mess my process up Sent from my Nexus 5 using the BariatricPal App
  20. I'm #FROZEN like the new Disney movie all the time!!!! I used to be the biggest sweater before VSG --- pouring bullets out of the shower and 10 minutes into spin class .... Will be interesting to find out how much I'm able to sweat when I start spinning again Post op day 16 for me
  21. I was banded on 8/7/12. I saw my nutritionist on 9/10. I saw her again last night and lost 4.5 pounds in that time. She made a statement like that wasn't enough weight loss. I thought that 1-2 pounds per week was healthy?

    Get Soooo Tired After Eatin

Hi! I had my surgery 10/17. I went for my first fill on 11/1 and ever since then I have the should pain. Do you have it?
  23. You'll be fine...I was freaking out too all the way until I saw my surgeons smiling face. Then I was all geared up and ready to go. I was out for like 45 minutes and up in my room in 2hrs. Staring at my husband and family as they asked me a gazillion times if I was alright. Lol. Of course I was and you will be too. see ya on the post op side of this journey ! Mine was 10/10/13 if you're wondering. I'm about 12 days post op.

    3 Year Anniversary

Thanks M2G, that is really sweet that you remembered that he travels a lot. He has been gone a lot up until now, but it should slow down and he is taking 3 weeks off at Christmas. Like I said, I have been far from perfect, but my body seems to really like being the weight I am and what I am doing is working, so I will take it. Could I be another 5 or 10 lbs lighter, sure. But I decided it is not worth beating myself up over. I picked my goal thinking I would never get to it, and when I reached it, I almost couldn't believe it. Now I am working on just being happy at my goal instead of always thinking its not good enough. Not easy that is for sure! Our brains are the biggest battle in this journey!

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

Gosh we’re so much alike. I read your other post about the fear. I’m going in this morning for my revision VSG to bypass. I was fearless for my sleeve but wide awake worrying right now. I too am worried that I’ll only lose 10-20 pounds.
