    Got Bad News

    Actually, my personal reason for gaining weight is that I am a 9/11 First Responder who is on massive amounts of medications and recently had an increase in steroids which increased my weight which was verified with my Pulmonary Doctor. That being said, Addicts are prone to relapses. Because somebody has a relapse does not mean they don't want to stay clean. The worse thing one can do, is insult and addict. If a person who falls off the wagon and somebody degrades them, chances are they won't try again. Statistics prove that 60 percent of people relapse. It has nothing to do with them not to want to stay away from their chosen addiction. I am a food addict. However, an increase of medication caused me to hold water weight which no amount of dieting would get off. I have two issues. Gaining 4 lbs when in the past 6 months I have been losing does not (in my case) mean I am not serious. One has to look at the reason for the weight gain. And yes. If a person over ate doesn't mean they aren't ready for the surgery. Addicts relape. A good doctor would find out why.
  2. I am one of these folks who doesn't run to the Dr with every hang nail. My questions are can you eat food with no problem, could be you swelled after the fill , could be warm weather and that caused the reflux. I would give it a couple of days and see if it comes back. At your weight do you really need that much restriction to maintain your weight loss I can tell you acid reflux over time cause serious damage so if you are refluxing every night STOP. And all those meds are nasty and should not be nesesasary. After losing over 100 lbs you have learned how to eat 3lb weight gain could be water and compared to sleeping upright it sounds like a better trade off.

    Snoring - help!

    This is not going to be your favorite reply. Please understand that I'm not being judgemental in ANY way. I'm at my max weight as we speak. You have to save yourself (and your SO) by losing the weight you've regained. Don't throw things at me. I SOOOOO know it's easier said than done but you've got to try. Has the snoring resumed in the last 5 - 10 pounds of weight gain? Try to get just those pounds back off. You can do it. You've done it in the past and you can do it again. I've heard that some people are having good experiences with controlling their appetite and/or head hunger by going on anti-depressants. Effexor is the one I've heard mentioned recently but I understand Wellbutrin has been effective too. Please don't be upset with me I just want to encourage you to help yourself in the only way I can think of. Spray snore relief didn't work for me but I couldn't tolerate the taste/feel of it. I'm being banded on March 7th and I'd like to believe that the lessons I will learn will help me if I ever have to have the band removed. Don't wait - try to nip this thing in the bud.   5. I can't offer you a solution for the short term, but mine were always awfully painful. After surgery and 4 months of being in the fetal position with a heating pad on my back and my abdomen, I got an IUD, which I did not at all need for birth control (my husband had s vasectomy) and it has been miraculous! You may want to consider it. I did try the Depoprovera shot but was terrified of the weight gain side effect.

    No way that 1 cup of yogurt + some brown sugar and cocoa caused a 5lb weight gain, most of that is likely water if you stuck to your diet otherwise. Work closely with the nutritionist at your surgeon’s office to find a plan that is sustainable for you and hang in there. I have never eaten as little as 10g carb/day during this entire process and have been very successful. I think the lowest I ever did was 25g carb/day and that was quite short term. Now that I am nearing maintenance my guideline, per my surgeon’s office, is 70-80g protein/day and to just keep my carbs lower than my protein. It gets better!
  7. Long story short. Sleeved Nov 2014 at 308 hit LW end of March this year, at 171. Felt great looked great. Depression set in for many reasons and tried suicide twice end of March and end of April. Was put on meds including abilify which is notorious for weight gain. Have gained 53 lbs in 5 months. I'm now 224. I'm off abilify but damage is done. And don't know how to lose the weight or eat healthy anymore. I went thru hell post surgery with complications including feeding tubes and 6 hospital stays and when I hit 171 was all worth it. Was down to a medium from 3X shirts now back to XL. Help. If I knew how to do it naturally to lose 50 plus lbs I wouldn't have needed the surgery. I try and diet and I blow it each time. I still can't eat as much pre sleeve but gaining 10 lbs a month currently. Depression is coming back due to how I look and feel about this now. Any positive advice and support is welcomed.     Something is wrong with Christmas

    I'm sorry for offending some of you-I was trying to point out that your beliefs are like pollution to the rest of us. I voted that smoking in restaurants should be banned so the rest of the world wasn't forced to succomb to what other people enjoyed, but nobody minds cramming 2 months of BS in my face every years, and there's no avoiding it! And then in January comes the new post-Christmas thread about how everyone is so discouraged about all the weight gain, getting back on track and credit card debt. God bless.
  9. Thanks for the link! Luckily, my hubby may not understand teenage girls, but he does know when to listen to the mama or else! I will share that with him for sure. I absolutely believe it can cause weight gain. I mean - don't most of us to some extent try to do the exact opposite of what our parents want especially when we're teenagers! I love therapy too. It's why my oldest has survived this long. There were years there when I was sure only one of us was gonna make it! Good luck, and BTW - I think figuring out the root cause of an issue is a point so many people miss so you are already ahead of the game.

I had my sleeve surgery Jan 14, compared to others only lost 100lbs so already felt like a failure, now in the last 8 mths have put on 20lbs and just don't know where to start to head back in the right direction. I feel so alone and depressed but know I don't want to go back to my pre surgery weight. Is this my fault - absolutely it is.. Although I still have great restriction I sometimes don't eat the right foods and thus weight gain.. Any advise on a good starting point to get back on track would be most appreciated.. Many thanks

    Being fat and finding love

    I really don't think you are going to find a man who finds you worthy of loving, until YOU find yourself worthy of loving. My advice...and I am not saying it is worth anything!!!...would be to find things in life that make you happy. Work hard to make the best and most productive life you can for you and your son. Focus on the morals, and the attitudes you want him to possess as he too becomes a man. When people, not just men, but everyone, sees that you have that positive outlook, and that you are productive in your life, they will want to be around you. Think about it, if you met a man, regardless of his looks or size, and all he did was complain about how horrible his last relationships were, and how ALL he wants is love and marriage. You would wonder WHY? Why did all the relationships go bad? Was it all the other persons fault? Was he giving relationships time to develop or just wanting seriousness right off the bat? Even tho we tend to put men in another category, they think the same things... And it will be hard for them to see someone worth pursuing a relationship with, if you don't see yourself as worth it. Like P-nut, I too was married twice before. When I married for the first time, I struggled to gain enough weight to keep my dress from sagging in the back...I made it to 116 pounds....I am 5'9". He cheated on me. The 2nd time I got married, I had become a Mom, and was up to 130 pounds. He abused me, and is currently serving time for attempted murder...mine! That began my weight gain.....years later, for the 3rd marriage, I was well over 260 pounds, and he loves me. And I love him. More than I could ever convey in words. He knew me years ago, when I was skinny...but he loves me, and married me when I was fat. He would love me fat til the day I died. But I want more time with him.... Work on making YOU happy. Work on making a good life for you and your son. Then if someone fits into that life, and can improve it, let it happen, don't try to force it. It is much better to be happy alone, than married and miserable! Good luck, be happy!!! Kat
  12. I know some anti-depressants cause weight gain, not all but some. Has anyone taken their anti-depressants after surgery and fight to lose weight because of the meds or are things different after surgery? I take Effexor, which isn't known for weight gain but I was just curious if that's something anyone here had to worry about.

My surgeon said most of his patients are on antidepressants (they are possibly overprescribed in Australia and also, depression/anxiety is a bit of a comorbidity with morbid obesity) and he’s never seen it prevent anyone from losing weight. I currently take prednisone (which generally makes you gain weight like crazy) and antidepressants and I’ve lost weight. Lots and fairly quickly. And I’ve done so without exercising much because I’ve had rheumatoid arthritis. I don’t want to trivialize the feelings of anyone who does take medication that causes them to struggle. I would say that (in my experience) you can still overcome it if you work hard. So I wouldn’t worry (I don’t think you’ll have any problems if your antidepressant isn’t even known for weight gain) but use this awareness as extra motivation to distinguish real hunger from head hunger.
  14. Hi again Jack, I agree with you completely. I too have an interest in the psycology of weight gain & loss however I wonder if it's not a bit 'too much too soon 'for a lot of bandsters. I know myself that I am just so greatfull to have the band and it's finally working. Maybe down the track, if I'm no longer happy with my progress, I'll look at it more closely but right now I feel like I've won the lotto.

    I'd definitely ask for a pregnancy test, just in case. Then, if that is negative, I'd start exploring other options like thyroid issues (because of the weight gain) and premenopause. Good luck!

    I have BCBS and VA coverage- NEITHER of them would approve my surgery because of my BMI only being 31. I'm actually in great shape, and an athlete but my weight has always been on the obese side, and now I have so many complicating factors it's gotten ridiculous. I've been on insulin meds, hormone meds, stomach ulcer meds, etc. I also have Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome which causes huge amount of weight gain and stomach issues at various points in the month. Every doctor I've consulted with have said this surgery will fix 99% of my problems, but NO insurance will cover this surgery because I'm not Morbidly Obese- so if I gained 30 more lbs and became full blown diabetic then they would pay... my logic is- why wait and torture my body, fix it now by a reputable doctor and save the last year of my 20's as not being miserably over weight. And maybe, just maybe I can get into the athletic shape of my life again and actually play my club sport like I use to 10 years ago minus all this extra baggage. :/ And yes, I'd love to be in the Alabama group- and of course and War Eagle!
  17. Hello Everyone: I am 4 1/2 years out from gastric bypass and am experiencing weight gain. It didn’t just start and I know it’s because of how I am eating. I have gained about 25 pounds from my lowest weight since surgery and need to get back on track. Head hunger is the problem. I am back on this site for support and advice. Any words of wisdom to combat the head hunger? Fortunately I still dump if I eat too much sugar but unfortunately I have no problem eating carbs.

    Fifteen years ago I purposefully had my only tattoo put on the top of my foot because that was the only place I figured wouldn't be affected by weight gain or weight loss--and it wasn't (but it WAS so painful to have it done there!). Good luck.

    Daily Calories

    Thank you for posting that question because I have been wondering the same thing. My surgery was on 9/10 and I lost 13 pounds by 10/17 but have now gained 3 back. The dietitian told us not to count calories yet but if I followed their instructions and had only 3 Optifast HP per day (to begin) that was only 600 calories and I got headaches and hypoglycemia so I have since raised the calories to 1000-1200. I was still loosing at 1000 but I had a couple of days last week when I was so hungry I ate so many calories I stopped counting-thus the weight gain. I really need a little more direction even though I know I should be able to figure it out with the information I have. I had to cancel my first appointment for a fill and couldn't get another one until Nov. 4 so I am concerned that I am going to be hungry until then.

    1) Protein. I get 90% of my calories from pure protein. I completely avoid carbs like the black plague. I snack on chicken, and whatever I can get my hands on. Yesterday for lunch I had pulled pork bbq, 3 oz and I was done, saved the rest and ate it again for dinner. No sides, no bread, nadda. The bbq was more than enough. 2) Routine is my bff. I know what I'm going to eat every single day before I leave the house, I leave nothing for imagination and I workout with other people so even if I'm not feeling motivated to do it, I know they are waiting on me to show up- there for I actually do my workouts religously. 3) Here's the tough love. I commit to at least 1 FULL HOUR EVERY SINGLE DAY to working out. Math says it takes 3500 calories to burn 1 lbs of fat, even on a low calorie diet and your BMR helping to burn some calories that still a LOT Of calories that you need to burn. 4) READ the guru's. I've read Jillian Michaels and Bob Harpers books, I've read Oprah's trainers, I've read all the top hollywood trainers books. I've educated myself thoroughly and there are several key things THEY ALL AGREE ON: A) To lose weight you must work out a MINIMUM of 1 hour 6 days a week and it must be intense, not lolly gagging- doesn't matter if it's running, walking, elliptical or what you got to make it intense and get your heart rate to 120. B.) Weight lifting is NECESSARY. At least 3 times a week for 30 minutes at max weight. All the trainers said it, if you want to change your metabolism it starts with weights. Muscle burns more fat. There for increase your muscle. If you rotate a day of weight lifting for cardio, or add them both in for a 2 hour workout 6 days a week, magical things might happen. C) Carbs are the enemy. They all agree. We are a carb heavy society. And because of our sleeves now is the time to back away slowly and reconsider them later. Eat a very heavy protein diet. D) Sugars are the enemy. And you know what I'm talking about. Even the Protein shakes are full of crap. Time to step back drink h20 (and none of the other crap) and focus on Proteins again. I will miss my smoothies and my fudigcles and my occassional sweet tooth cravings, but do want to lose weight or not? E) DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT eat after 7pm. Water ONLY. sleeping on a full stomach, partially full, or any thing at all in your stomach will screw with your metabolism in your sleep. Just don't do it. Maybe masters swimming and water polo are my saving grace, but I know several people who've had success with trainers, workout buddies, etc. It's HARD. Period. No matter who we are to get this done. It takes time and commitment. I have PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome which has been a huge factor in why I needed the VSG- my body cannot regulate my hormones or my insulin), and I have always gained between 7 and 10 lbs on my period (sorry guys for the TMI but weight gain is true for the vast majority of women). If I only fluctuate by a pound or so I will be delighted. So this week I'm easing up on myself and just training and ignoring my numbers as they will most likely go up. BE AWARE of your cycles and get a calendar. Start tracking on your calendar, calories consumed, when your period is, when your PMS'ing (which is when your hormones start to surge and the first onset of weight gain pre-period happens) and watch what happens. You might be bloating because you're so close to your cycle. I also get horrific acne- which right now is pretty bad :/ so that's my indicator mother nature is about to come kick my a$$. I work out a LOT. A minimum of 2 to 5 hours a day and that's why I've been dropping numbers. I know a lot of people cannot commit to that, but I'm doing with with a packed schedule and a kid because my health is #1. It's time for me. THIS IS MY TIME. And I don't have anymore time in my life to waste. I'm being as completely proactive as possible. Hope this helps!

    Weight gain!

    On feb 7th will be my one month post op. The first two weeks I lost 15 lbs... Now I've gained 4 lbs! My doc gave me no restrictions on food except steak and tough meat, which I haven't consumed. I make healthy choices... For example, I will chose salad over pizza or grilled chicken instead of fried. Anyone else going through or have gone through what I'm going through? Thanks! ❤️
  23. I am looking for revision due to GERD and a little weight gain back from sleeve. My GERD is so bad I have been waking up choking on it. I called BCBS to ask them their requirements and the woman referenced me to a page in the book that clearly states NOTHING about revision requirements. I’m miserable. The dr office won’t even look at me u til I find out if revision is covered by my insurance and they simply just won’t give me a yes or no answer.
  24. I am getting so frustrated. I am taking steroids for an eye issue. Been in them since March and doing a slow taper off if them. But I keep gaining weight. 40 lbs so far. Made a special appt with the NUT and that was a waste of time. Drink more water. Stop all soda and caffeine. Eat smaller portions. Duh!!!! My mind is working overtime on the weight gain that I can't focus on redirecting towards better choices. Uu Ok thanks for letting me vent

    Unfill HELL!!! Help please

    Why did you/Doctor feel the need to remove saline from the band? Were you too tight? having symptoms? Most often taking saline out is done to resolve problems. I'm curious why he felt that was the "right amount" . I've has saline removed due to reflux on occasion but usually.5 cc. waited about a month then went back for a refill. I don't know your age but when going through a menstrual cycle some women have complained about "Water weight gain" which is possible our body retains water in the cells constantly, due to different reasons, salt intake etc,and the body is 60% water in general. Call your new doctor ask them to come back in, but some saline back in and I think you'll be surprised at how quickly that 10 lbs will go away. Good luck
