  1. Welcome! I haven't been banded yet so can't speak for that. But as far as the Depo shot... I hated it! I took it a few years back. It was one of the major reasons I began to gain weight! I sincerely hope it hasn't had the same affect on you. But if you've noticed more weight gain while on it, I would consider changing my birth control. Good luck! =)

    Sabotaging all the good work

Hi Betty, Good post. I don't know if I would neccessarily call my obesity an illness but in my case it is obviously hereditary. I am the spitting image of my grandmother and great great grandmother. Heaviness runs in my family everywhere. I also know people who are very thin and can eat whatever they want. It seems obvious there is something different in my metabolism when I see people like that. I was thin till I was about 3 years old and then I started getting heavy. My parents were dealing with emotional stuff at the time so I don't know if that changed their meals or what but I also have always eaten too big of portions and I think being on the depo shot for the last 9 years has played a role in my adult obesity. One clinic had quit giving me the shot because of my huge weight gain but I continued getting it elsewhere. New evidence shows that shot definitely causes bone loss, so just recently I switched off of it to a lower dose pill. I think many factors have played a role in my weight problem and they have all compounded it. I think insurance companies should be more willing to treat it as a disease and treat it as such. If I even mention weight when I see my family practitioner my insurance refuses to pay and sends me the bill for the entire visit regardless of what the appointment was actually for. That is very wrong in my books. Best wishes, Teresa

Heya all :) I'm Back after having my baby

Thank you so much ! Well don't lose hope. The extra weight I was carrying was the reason I had trouble for years getting pregnant. We tried for sooooooooooo long and then I lost some weight and bam it happened! Can't say I had any complications. Will say I was watched carefully. In my 3rd month found out had gestational diabetes. So I was sorta of labeled high risk. My diabetes was controlled with diet. <~~ Which I really watched and I think that was the reason for the low weight gain. I wish you well and thanks for the wonderful response
  4. Weight regain is based on a patient's ability to make the necessary lifestyle changes and continuing to adhere to a bariatric friendly diet plan, NOT what kind of surgery they had. The type of surgery doesn't dictate success or failure, an individual's behavior does that. I will add in an exception....with the malabsorption of bypass, you may be able to get away with eating off plan without regain more so than a sleeve patient. I have two good friends that had bypass almost 10 years ago and I would certainly regain if I ate like they do. However, they suffer from a variety of illnesses related to nutritional deficiencies. Personally, I'd rather take on the added accountability and stick with the healthier lifestyle required in order to maintain my loss. And as for studies comparing weight gain between the two surgeries you probably won't find that many. VSG just hasn't been around long enough to have accumulated enough long term data. But really, that data is only going to tell you what OTHER people have done, not what YOU are capable of.
  5. Yeah, a lot of my issues were based on poor lifestyle habits...lots of simple/processed carbs and not eating ANYTHING all day sometimes until dinner at which point I'd pig out almost all night until bedtime because I was starving. We all have different things that got us to the point of needing surgery! But once I made up my mind that I was ready to change my old habits I lost weight, gained energy and greatly improved my health. So, it is worth it to me to forego those old pizza and Pasta pig outs!!!!

    The look

Sometimes people who are jealous or wish they were losing weight tend to say something semi-spiteful because they are not losing and so the fact that you losing, no matter how fast or slow, is still losing. Smile when you tell them how much you have lost and be proud of your success. If you are anything like me before surgery there was no weight loss or if there was there was a weight gain that went along with it.
  7. Not everyone that has a low BMI gets WLS because of the laziness of putting a "little effort" I had wls at a BMI of 32, this was because i completely screwed up my metabolism from having the band. I was a BMI of 23 and jumped to 32 in less than 12 months since having the band removed. Basically i can not eat above 800 calories without gaining. My exercise and diet remained the same, i did NOT gain from lack of effort. Please do not generalise without knowing peoples history or story, a blanket statement like that isn't useful to anyone. And as you say, being 200lbs, you lose with very little effort, this may be the case for you, but you will find that weight loss is slower the lower BMI one is. Better to do something about it sooner than later right? That's like us (low BMI'ers) saying "we don't understand how you can gain so much weight & take so long to do something about it". To be honest there's no reason for anyone to be 600pds... Sorry. Heavier people lose weight faster than we do actually that why there's drastic weight loss for them, the weight moves slower for low BMI's so we actually HAVE to work super hard. I don't understand why anyone on this site would be harsh toward anyone. We are all here because we made bad choices & want to be healthier. I don't see a purpose for dissension on a "support group". Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App 600 lbs is a little excessive and i feel you were being mean spirited. Im not trying to be harsh im trying to understand. I understand if you have a health issue or rapid weight gain for no reason. But i do have an idea of the struggle because i have been that size most women in my family are that size and dont have trouble losing if and when they want to. I see that this is not the case for everyone and my apologies for generalizing. My concern is that surgery is becoming a go to option instead of a last option. But who am i?? This is just my opinion on an open forum you dont have to agree with me.
  8. Hello everyone, I must admit, I've been evesdropping for weeks now, make that months....and finally a doctor in my area is starting to do Lap-Band. Guess who his first patient is.....that's right ME! The kicker is I get 2 doctors for the price of one, (a Lap-Band specialist is flying in from another city to assist), although, I think I'm PAYING for 10, LOL. Like I said I've been following all the band sites for a while, and I'm so excited. I won't even go into the I've been fighting weight all my life, bla bla bla. Thanks to everyone for all the insite, except for those few who scare me with their weight gain and pb's, lol....Wish me luck!

    Weight Loss, Periods, Mirena

I had been cycling birth control pills for years with out periods. Then when I started losing alot of weight (now at 153 lbs lost) I started getting periods again and they were irregular and long. I went to my Gyno and she put me on the Depo. I was doing ok with that, besides the weight gain and nausea the 1st few days after getting the shot and my periods were becoming normal. Then I made the decision to have a tubal ligation so that I could stop using birth control all together. Well, here came the irregular periods again and frequent too...like 1 every week or two. It was awful! My Gyno put me on the Ortho Estra patch to regulate my periods. It has helped, but here I am using horomones again. She suggested an "Abulation" procedure and also said I am Pari-menopausal too. I am considering the procedure because I do not want to continue using horomones..I have had a blod clot before and heart disease runs in my family. I am scared of having a stroke too. So I really don't want to continue using something that could cause me to have serious medical problems. Uggghh....so frustrating!

let's get to know each other

I'm a 43-y.o. stay-at-home mom to two homeschooled children, ages 5 (girl) and 8 (boy). My husband and I are building a home - well, his salary is paying for it, I'm managing it, and our contractors are building it, lol. I used to be a research scientist. I started my weight gain/loss journey at age 9 when dad pointed out I was getting chubby and didn't I think I should stop drinking shakes and put me in a (boys!) soccer team for exercise. I was particularly clumsy at soccer and it did nothing for my self esteem... I wish they'd taken some effort to get me on a swim team instead - I'm actually a very good swimmer. Anyway, I followed a typical "lose 10, gain 15" pattern - the last round I lost 70 lb and gained 100... I'm starting my 2 week pre-op Medifast diet on Monday at just under 350 lb. My last straw was when my parents went to Hawaii last month - my son remarked that he wanted to go back, which reminded me that two years (and 50 lb lighter) ago I was jumping in the surf with my 6-y.o., and right now I don't even know if I could comfortably walk on a sand beach because of the arthritis in my knees and hips :-( My knees have been bad since I was a teen, so it was particularly stupid for me to have gained so much weight. I've been told that I can't have knee replacements until I've lost 125+ lb. I want to keep up with my young kids (hence the knee replacements) and I also want to live long enough to see my grandchildren. Consequently, I'm very highly motivated to succeed with my lapband. Looking forward to sharing progress stories with you all - Alyson

    Why were YOU overweight?

I was always of normal weight (married at 135lbs age 25) Had three children with 1st pregnacy became diabetic controlled with diet. Lost all pregancy weight with all three children. At age 40 I became type 2 diabetic. After 5 years of trying to control my sugar wih diet and exercise, I was put on meds, with each new med I was put on to control my sugar I would gain 10lbs give or take a few lbs. After 5 years and 60 lbs of weight gain I decided to get my life back and my sugar under control. I am still working on control of my sugar but, I know in time all will be right in my world. I will live to to granchildren someday. Good luck to everyone.
  12. Thanks for responding Corize. Part of the policy for approval is that YOU MUST ADHERE TO BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATIONS AND ADHERE TO THE DOCTORS DIETARY PROGRAM. SO THEY WON'T ACCEPT MY DOCTORS RESPONSE. THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL ACCEPT THIS IS IF HE CLARIFIES WHAT HE WROTE AND HE WRITES THAT HE DID NOT MEAN TO SAY I DIDN'T ADHERE TO THE WHOLE DIETARY PROGRAM AND BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION PROGRAM. At least...this is what it seems...that the only way they will cover it now. I am getting my doctor records from 2005-2009 from my other doctor to show my weight then and how I was stressed ect...and my foot doctor records to show how this increase in weight gain even now effects the arches in my foot which causes even more pain and stress.
  13. I revised from lapband to RNY in July 2014. I ended up Preggo in October and had my son June of this year. Well I was pre-op for a tumor removal and found out I was Preggo AGAIN!! I didn't gain much weight with the first pregnancy and I'm trying not to gain again. I'm 40lbs from goal weight. Anyone have tips on how to keep weight gain at a minimum with baby #2
  14. I am between 8-9 months out and a couple months ago, I'd not been as disciplined. I've been stalled or stuck in the same 5lb range for about 2months. For the last month, I've gotten back on track with what I eat and I've been killing it in the gym. Last week, id dropped 4lbs taking me to 222lbs. This week, I've been working just as hard and I've gained over 5lbs. Can someone shed some light. I'm trying really hard not to cry because it makes no sense.
  15. My weight struggles also began with Prednisone. Prior to a very bad posin ivy episode I had been a vegetarian 17 years and did a lot of juice fasting, etc. was always worried about my weight but I really wasn't fat. I think I set my system up for storage big time and when I was given IV prednisone in an ER I gained about 50 pounds very quickly. Then the panic dieting, the up and down yo yo series of diets always resulting in more weight gain. That initial 50 got a companion 50 over time and I've never been able to lose it. Instead I have about another 20 on top of that that fluctuates. I'll never get down to where I was but I'd like to be about 100 pounds thinner. Bring on the band! To the women above who experienced abuse, I am so sorry for your painful histories -- you both have a lot of courage. Thanks for sharing!

    An Honest Question....

Yes..It is calories in vs. calories out. I will not lie, when i first went to solids...i gained a little. I freaked out, but was assured by my Dr. that it was very common and it would go away quickly...that my body was in a "starvation mode" and when it got the food it wanted to hold on to it. He was right (yay) and the weight gain came off quickly and i have been losing pretty steadily since. i can honestly say, I too don't totally keep track of calories, but i do know for sure that some days I really only get about 800 calories in me. Bad eating days (near TOM), it maybe even less. With the solid food, that little bit keeps you full longer because it takes much longer to go from your pouch to your lower stomach and so on. Liquids/mushies can pass right through...so in fact if you ate solely sliders, ate until you were full, and ate anytime you were hungry, you could cause yourself to GAIN weight because you could eat more. i could eat a whole tub of ice cream right now if I really wanted to because it is going to melt and pass right through the band...defeating the purpose. i hope maybe this makes sense :scared2:
  17. @@Keeper I always knew that I was a carb addict. But it was not until I did the Whole 30 program this Spring that I realized I am a sugar addict. And as you probably know, carbs turn to sugar in the body, so by strictly managing my sugar intake I was able to control -- control by a lot -- my hunger, and therefore achieve weight loss. I follow a Paleo diet now and have learned to listen to my bidy and understand hunger queses. What I have learned is that even something as begnine and good for you as roasted coconut juice will trigger the sugar craving / hunger game. Nor can I eat gluten free foods. Even one wrap a day over the course of only a few days shows up as a several pound weight gain for me. So the solution for me was to follow Paleo. It really is nice not to be hungry constantly!
  18. @@IcanMakeit @amponder @pink dahlia we have similar stories. I was not quite as active as you in high school. but I absolutely swam and worked out. Then I got into a car accident and could not exercise. And I got depressed so I ate too many carbs. I gained 30 pounds by my wedding. Then came pregnancy and another 60 pound weight gain. And I gained more and more from awful eating habits. It was like being in quicksand and sinking more and more. I was over my head and opted for gastric bypass as a last resort. It saved my life.
  19. I should not blame anyone or anything for my weight gain besides myself for becoming lazy and not caring about anything. I ate out three times a day. Snacked mindlessly when bored. Living just minutes away from Napa and Sonoma wine countries I kinda considered myself a foodie and Sunday's was for a nice wine country drive with my buddy for some epicurean adventure. The weight crept on gradually. Luckily, I decided to take charge of my health and not let my taste buds dictate my life before I got any health issues. I want to travel to foreign lands. And sitting in a plane is not fun when you are big.
  20. Where to begin.....After being thin my whole life,1 pregnancy at 20 (lots of complications as well as quit smoking) and I spent most of my 20's over 200lbs. Pregnancy #2 at 30 (which was great and no weight gain on top of what I already had)and now I am into my late 30's and really didn't want to wait for health problems to arise from being obese any longer. Diabetes and heart problems are VERY prominent in my family history. After many years and countless hours in the gym with and without personal trainers, injuries have always held me back from achieving my goal weight. The RnY was out of the question for me, due to the malabsorbtion issue and I know how important vitamins play a role in our bodies. I know a lot of people who have had RnY done, and with great results, but not for me! Then one day in Sept 2010 my husband came home with news about a WLS that 2 of our clients had successfully had, that didn't involve rerouting or malabsorbtion. The VSG was introduced to me and I feverishly researched it! I had my first orientation classes in Oct with Kaiser South San Francisco as well as my appt with a surgeon. I decided this was for me! So in November I had an appointment with my surgeon who was going to set me up for surgery Dec 3, 2010. Talk about fast!!! I decide to wait until January because not only is Dec 3 my youngest daughters' birthday, but we had a huge vacation schedule for 2 weeks in Florida over Christmas vacation and I wanted to be able to enjoy every minute of it with my children, as this was their first visit to Florida. I wish you could of seen the look on my Doctors' face when I told him that December wasn't going to work for me so lets shoot for January (most people want sooner not later). So January 24, 2010 is my surgery date! I am so excited to be starting this new chapter in my life, and excited to know that my health is going to be here to stay ( God willing), but of course as the date gets closer, other emotions are on the rise. I want to thank all of those before me for all the information that you have posted so that people can make informed decisions about their health. By the way, I have told EVERYONE that is in and who enters my life, about my WLS! I refuse to hide behind the shame of obesity any longer!!! ALL of my friends and family support my decision, as most have seen first hand my struggles and blood sweat and tears in the gym. God Bless!
  21. I have PCOS too. The whole hair thing drives me crazy. UGH. Anyway I saw some news report lately (can't remember which show, sorry!) that PCOS is now sometimes being called Androgen excessive disorder. Apparently since not everyone with PCOS actually HAS the cysts, but all seem to have an excessive amount of the male hormone Androgen-hence the hairiness, weight gain in the stomach area, fertility issues, male pattern baldness etc etc.... they feel it's a more appropriate name for it. Anywhoo that was my biggest worry when I was banded- that because of PCOS I would not lose weight. I have lost over 30 lbs already though. The loss is slowing down now to about 2 lbs a week. The key has been getting that Protein in, and the Water too, I think. No one has really noticed the weight loss yet or at least they haven't mentioned it- but someone last week said my skin looked like it was "glowing" and I attribute that to my water intake....but I've always had such horrible skin issues that they had no idea how much they made my day!
  22. I agree with Denise. For me, it's also redefining what is normal. My new normal means low carb, low sugar, and protein first. I don't intend to "indulge" in food that is unhealthy because that is what got me here in the first place! In the past, I could diet like a rock star, lose the weight, and then feel that I could have a few "treats" now and then. Once i was at my goal. I'd eat something unhealthy, notice no weight gain, and think it was okay to continue eating "normal" by fitting in the unhealthy foods until I was back to eating junk on a regular basis. Soon, I was back to my original Pre-diet weight, plus another 10 lbs. I didn't go through a risky surgery only to let that happen again! I have a friend who had Gastric Bypass surgery 10 years ago. She lost all her weight, then began to gradually eat and drink "normal" again. It worked for a few years, but guess what? She is now back to her original size. it's a slippery slope and a gamble that I'm just not willing to risk.

    Bi-Polar Sleevers

Hi! I was sleeved on Aug. 22. I have bipolar. I haven't been sleeved for long and, if anything, I'm still really tired all the time. You raise an interesting question though - I am anxious to see what the future holds w/r/t weight loss and my bipolar. I know you didn't ask for this advice, but one more thing I will add, FWIW, the only medication that EVER worked for me in terms of stopping the cycles of up and down is Lamictal, which is a mood stabilizer. It is generic. And it doesn't cause weight gain. I'm throwing that out there to the extent you end up finding that you're "too high." Good luck - nice to know there are others on this journey!
  24. Up till 1 week ago i was steadily losing every day. At 4 weeks i was cleared for solids and has seen my weight go up! In 1 week i have put on almost 2lbs could this be because i am eating solids? I can 2 bites of chicken breast, cheese and yoghurt. I am getting in 1 litre of water. Think i will go back to protein shakes and water reluctantly to see if this pushes the scales back down. Did anybody else experience weight gain after solids?

    No Weight Record

Hmm... ER visits? Anything? My first submission for the sleeve was denied and one of the reasons was because I didn't prove that I had been compliant with the prescribed diet of the lapband. Well, the lapband doesn't have a prescribed diet, so how do you prove you've been compliant with it? I pulled up every study I could find that showed %EWL at 12, 24 and 36 month marks, and then added a line of my own numbers, showing that even after my slip I exceeded the mean numbers (including numbers from FDA trials that were used as the basis for the band being approved) by no less than 30%. In order to do that I had to get REALLY creative. I had some weights, but not consistently for the 6 years I was banded. And I had a lot of numbers that could easily look like failure unless I could adequately explain (e.g. "weight gain" that was actually a pregnancy). I also took the dates I could find (PCP, OB, ER, joining a gym, for my job I had to go through an extensive medical review and they had my weight recorded from our phone conversation, weights from surgeries, etc.) Then I built a "timeline," plotted out the verifiable weights, and then added event points to show fluctuations (e.g. pregnancy, delivery, slip diagnosed, etc.) I figured if my weightloss of almost 200 lbs wasn't enough to show compliance, what would be? So I grabbed a copy of my PCP's paperwork showing where I had them indicate I had an NSAID allergy (which I don't, but we wanted to make sure no one mistakenly prescribed any b/c they were a no-no). It's not technically diet, but it is compliance. Maybe you can do something similar (timeline) using your pictures, and write an explanation that you declined office visit weights due to your discomfort, desire to avoid embarrassment, etc. Dated pictures if you have them. Do you post pics on social media sites? E.g. facebook has the timeline feature you could use as a guide, if so. I'd also request a letter from your PCP stating that weights were not recorded, but you have an X year history of obesity... that way there's at least official confirmation that your weight wasn't recorded vs. just your word. The best lesson I learned - you have to be creative and a little loose with interpretations, and as much as I hate to say it, you have to find ways to "think outside the box". Clothing receipts that would show sizes purchased and corresponding dates? Home videos? Etc. Anything, regardless of medium, that could chronicle your weight.
