Surgeon's advice after vomiting
summerseeker replied to lizonaplane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have random bouts of vomiting every week. Not like the last 10 weeks though. 1 meal will be fine and the day after its a no no. I vomit saliva, not froth. I dont understand it at all. I dont do liquids the day after, I need nutrients badly so I start on things I know are ok with my tummy. Yogurt is a big soother. The gummy vitamins went straight in the trash as soon as I could swallow ordinary multivitamins and iron from the supermarket. I do morning and before bed with these. Thats working fine. I was given soluble Calcium but I can not stomach it and as I am seeing my dietician tomorrow, I will ask about alternates for this. I was told to book a Vitamin B12 injection every 12 weeks for life so have this in 10 days time. Does anyone else get this ? -
Mine was 1/25. I had about the same regain during my days in the hospital & also confusion identifying different pains (muscular? gas? incisions? cut nerves? hunger? fullness?) From my perspective about a week 'ahead' of you I'd say don't sweat that 4lbs gain (it will come off precipitously) & that it's understandable to feel confused.

Hello everyone. I had my VSG surgery on November 15, 2021 and I feel like I am at a stall and I'm looking for a gym buddy in my area San Antonio, TX. I feel awkward going to the gym on my own. I have no idea where to start and would appreciate having someone who knows what I am going through. I'd love to push you on with your weight loss goals and hopefully be able to push myself also in this weight loss journey. I see the before and after pictures of many of you and you all look so GREAT! I am ready to work on myself.

my stalls seemed to be more frequent and lasted longer the farther out I got from surgery. After the first year, there were MANY times I thought "well, this is it", and then the weight loss would start up again. It finally stopped at 20 months out.

Thank you all again so much! I have to admit, I’m getting nervous as these last 3 weeks are dwindling down… last night I was up late reading stories that kinda made me worry lol… some of my worries are: Dehydration from not being able to get the fluids in Pain (although I have a pretty high pain tolerance) Ending up with GERD

I broke my stall this morning! Down 1.8 lbs since yesterday and down 1.6 since my last lowest weight, so I think the stall might actually be over. 😁 I am trying so hard to exercise but yesterday doing steps my knee started hurting, plus my hip is still hurting from the treadmill, and my arm is still hurting from the trainer I met with. I was going to swim, but then I realized that might be hard with my arm messed up... Last night I walked all over my apartment following @ShoppGirl's suggestion. It was nice. I was on the phone with my parents but still managed to get my calorie goal for the day (according to my Apple Watch).

Stalls can be 3-6 weeks generally speaking. Small fluctuations on the scale like that are typically water weight, but just to be sure, make sure you're still tracking your food and staying on point as you ride this stall out.

I heartily concur! It's been 22 weeks since starting my pre-op diet, and I've lost an average 1.2kg per week, which is basically what I was losing doing a regular calorie counting 1200-1500cal per day diet with exercise. I'm eating on average between 700 to 1200 calories per day (1200 is a *really* good day, but if I'm honest, I don't reach that often), always focused on protein and vitamins and water. Frequent stalling. I've just accepted that it is what it is with me and my experience. All I can do is be grateful I'm currently where I am and just keep marching on. I'm the smallest I've been in over two decades, and so I started the None To Run program again. I'm smaller than I was when I did it last time, so I though it'd be a doddle! And it was, I was having no trouble fitness-wise but I managed to completely f**k my left knee and have had to stay off it for this whole week. So trying to up my exercise to running instead of walking to help boost myself has stalled as well. It's a good thing I have a pervasive sense of humour! So yep. These hurdles and stalls are super frustrating. It stalls were a physical entity, I'd kick it in the shins. Then probably hurt a toe.

How exciting!!! It's finally here! I love your comment about "it's all about self-love", because you are so right! It took me a while to get there mentally. Don't be too hard on yourself, because a loss of 26 lbs is fantastic! I lost 3 lbs during my waiting period. I did not have to do a full-blown pre-op diet. Just the week before my surgery, I had to cut out all carbonated and caffeinated drinks, sweets, etc. and amp up on complex carbs instead. I was told it helped with the nausea experienced from the surgery, and I can attest that it did! So I was happy about that. Keep your eye on the big prize, and take it one day at a time. You have 11 days to go......it will be here before you know it. I'm 2 weeks post-surgery and I've lost 22 lbs. I had the sleeve. I can tell you, I have very little appetite. I don't feel hungry at all. I have to remind myself to eat my 3 meals a day to make sure I meet my protein requirements. It's crazy. The only thing I crave is COFFEE......isn't it crazy? It's not even food....it's a good robust coffee with the Funfetti-flavored creamer.....sigh.... Keep us updated! Good Luck! ♥

After 2 weeks pre op diet and a week and 4 days of protein shakes and broth I ventured out and had a cup of Panera broccoli and cheese soup. First off what a treat with the little pieces of broccoli and carrots. I know I’m supposed to strain the pieces out but I haven’t had any issues getting anything down and the pieces are blended for the most part. Anyway it was delicious and it’s the first time I’ve actually felt full after eating. Im looking forward to finishing the rest of my soup tomorrow at lunch!!!

I am five years out from my sleeve. I am going in next week for an EGD as my surgeon suspects my hiatal hernia is blocking my sleeve. I am only able to eat a couple ounces at a time without feeling terribly full. I read a message here where someone stated their surgeon was able to push the sleeve back into place during their EGD. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone else heard about hernia symptoms being relieved during an EGD?

I was drinking three protein shakes a day pre-op. Now they feel heavy, 8 oz is a lot to get down, and I need to get at least two down per day. I was throwing it up every time I'd drink a third of one. I tried two others without any change. I gave up. I am not taking the vitamins with food because when I take them it feels like I've eaten a meal. I have the Bariatric Advantage choc chews. I loved them after sleeve surgery, not now, and one fills me up! I am drinking two glasses of FairLife lactose free milk every day. The office is closed today and tomorrow because of the weather. I will call Monday. Thank you.

I had a revision from sleeve to RNY 11 weeks ago tomorrow. I was severely dehydrated a month ago, uncontrolled vomiting, BAD headache. I should have gone to the ER, but the wait was hours. It took four days before I was feeling better. I am back to drinking Pedialyte again, I was up at 4:30 AM vomiting. I have Phenergan suppositories, it knocked me out but I finally was able to rest. Even when this isn't going on, I can only eat an oz or 1.5 oz at a time. I weigh and/or measure my food. Several times a week an hour or more AFTER eating I'll have been gurgling and then it starts churning right above my breastbone. I know I'll have to throw up. Sure enough I do, and I'll feel better. I am going to contact the doctor; my bloodwork and my next follow-up visit is the second week in March. I want to know if I'm overreacting, if not, how do I word this to him where it makes sense? I am only getting in 30 - sometimes 70 grams of the 100 he wants me to get. I am not taking all my supplements. I took my iron and multi this morning and threw it up.

Hi, Not sure which procedure you got done- I had the sleeve one, and I can tell you, 2 weeks post-op, I'm still not hungry. During Phase 1, I made sure to sip sip sip all day. What helped me a lot was diluted apple juice. I would definitely not recommend drinking with a straw and also drinking while eating. Poor thing. I hope you feel better soon. Congrats on the 14.3 lbs loss! That's awesome! Take it one day a time, and sip sip sip ♥ Good Luck!

Hi..... today marks one week post op. Started the journey last August and my surgery was 1/27. My biggest (and most unexpected) hurdle has been NO DESIRE TO EAT. NOT EVEN A LITTLE. I called my doctors office on Tuesday bc I was extremely weak and not sleeping. Went in on yesterday and I had dropped 14.3lbs (starting weight was 264.3 and I was 250 at weigh in) Doc told me to drink for juice or something with sugar in it and switch to ensure drinks. He's worried about me getting malnourished. Said we will get back on track with the diet once I'm feeling better. I did that but the only mistake I made was sipping through a straw AND drinking while eating soup. HUGE MISTAKE. I won't do that again. Today is better though. Has anyone else gone through this as far as NEVER being hungry?

Surgeon's advice after vomiting

I tried chewables and I couldn't choke them down they were so gross. I switched at two weeks out to capsules. -
I am right there with you. I have been at a steady 2lb loss a week, and just in the last 2 weeks its come to a screeching halt. Still getting my protein, fluids, and movement everyday, so I just have to chalk it up to part of the process. From what I've read, stalls can last a few weeks to a few months, just depending on the person. I'm trying really hard to not focus on the scale and just appreciate how far I've come and how much better I feel now vs. 5 months ago.

Right there with you, my surgery sister. I had a three-week stall and it made me insane. Then this week—WHOOOOOOSH. Three pounds practically overnight. Now, obviously there's something going on in there. I have a theory that the Epsom salt bath I took after a physically intense day reduced some inflammation, but who knows.

I have heard people who have had stalls last for up to six weeks on here and then the loss started again. I was worried that I was going into maintenance too but I am a little closer to “normal” BMI and I worry that my body is just happier at the higher end of that normal range. Honestly I will be thrilled if I get to my goal of normal BMI. I actually gained four pounds now (my grandma was in hospice and just passed away Monday so I was definitely eating more than I should) and I have a post op appointment today so I get to go In and face the NP knowing I haven’t lost much since my last visit 😢. This may sound crazy Or silly but can you clear a path to walk from one end of your house to the other? I have a tiny house and am surprised I haven’t worn out the wood laminate but I walk back and forth like this daily. I do it because the treadmill is hard on my knees and just walking in my house doesn’t hurt them.

My story took place over three months (not just two), but... In early June, my A1C was 10.8. It was one of the lab results that made me decide to pursue surgery. My doctor added evening insulin to my existing diabetes meds, and I immediately made changes to how I ate -- but mostly just when I was home (I live alone), Whenever I was out/with friends, I would still have carbs, desserts, etc. I indulged a little at home, but I emptied the fridge and pantry of junk food and most of the time I ate better when I was in the house. Because I was still doing whatever I wanted some of the time, I never felt deprived at all. My next lab work was scheduled for early September, and I didn't learn until 2 weeks before the appointment that I wouldn't be approved for surgery unless my A1C was 9 or less! Talk about panic!! I figured there was no way it could go down almost two whole points in just three months -- especially when I could have done much more. I spent the next two weeks very stressed out...but, my new A1C wound up being 7.5! My doctor assured me there was no way the change could be attributed to just the added insulin. Anyway, my point is that you don't necessarily have to make super-drastic, super-restrictive changes in order to see significant A1C reduction within just a few months. Hang in there!

I lost 50 lbs before surgery and have lost 46 since surgery (4.5 months ago). I KNOW from everything I've read here, in my support groups, and in the information provided to me by my bariatric center that stalls are normal and inevitable. BUT THEY STILL SUCK DONKEY BALLS! I was losing about 9 lbs a month (rolling average) for the first 4 months, but since month 4, it's been just up and down the same two pounds. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I've gone from a 2x-3x to a large. I'm TRYING to focus on the fact that I can walk so much more quickly now. But I am so scared the weight loss has stopped. I am trying to do exercises, but I hurt my arm and my doc told me to rest it for a while. I was then doing more treadmill, but my hip started to hurt like it did when I did treadmill every day before surgery. My eating is decent but not perfect (I eat out a lot due to traveling for work, so I know my meals aren't low fat). I'm drinking so much I have to pee every hour. How long do stalls last and how do you know if you're in a stall or if your weight loss has STOPPED? (sorry for the CAPS 🤪)

Sleeve_me_alone, I agree! It’s crazy all the hoops they make you jump just to deny you! I will say as these last few weeks dwindle closer to “go time”, I’m getting nervous!

Finding Fitness Opportunities in Every Situation
lizonaplane replied to GradyCat's topic in Fitness & Exercise
We had 30 inches of snow here this past weekend, so I wasn't going out on Monday (I was in SF over the weekend so enjoyed some glorious walking on Saturday and lots of airplane time Sunday), but I have been doing lots of treadmill this week. I do it in ten minute increments, every time I get too cold. However, I've noticed that my hip pain is starting to come back like the last time I used my treadmill every day, so I might switch to stairstepping or marching in place. We have an indoor pool in my building, but it's so cold and dark when I'm not working! -
My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22
Dcsjoc replied to jaymecaye's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Today is first day I didn’t have a loss on the scale. Actually put 1/2 lb on 252!!!! As I’m reading this, I’m getting ready to go walk at gym. I had my 11.5 oz fairlife chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Water while walking. 1 cup of tomatoe vegetable(strained of course) soup for lunch . More water, Okios pro yogurt for dinner. Hot tea and jello cup for dessert. I still have 4 week before I head back to work. Loving the process so far, looking forward to phase 3 next week with purée veggies and chopped meat!! -
Dr says no more protein shakes
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to soulfiremama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah this doesn't seem right to me either. During the first 6 weeks your body is healing from surgery. It's common knowledge that incisions and even the muscles and tissues cut internally need protein to heal, even extra protein at times for surgeries with larger incisions, so this seems counterproductive to me.
