Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
newtonhuffman replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve on May 17th. In January, I weighed 385. I started preparing and had my first bariatric meeting with the surgeon around mid March. My weight when I started my 2 weeks of shakes was 362 and my surgery weight was 342. I track almost everything I eat and I am setting at 256 right now. Kinda tough to track around the Holiday, but feel like I have a new lease on life. I danced for almost 3 straight hours on Nov 27th at my daughter’s wedding! Your stomach will be tiny which will help you while you get/keep your mind right. Do NOT cheat! Have and keep the faith in the process! If you do that you will be extremely happy and able to get back to an active lifestyle!!! :-) -
Where are all the Michigan people at??

Glamourgirl: Check out the Bariatric center at Henry Ford Hospital. The U of M recomended them to me, said they had the Monopoly on this. They are very good. If I had to do it again, I would gladly go back and have my surgeon do it. Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Genaw. Go on line and you can check out their Web site., Google his name and see what you get, also you might be able to get a tape on the surgery Free since you would be considering him. "maybe!!!, don't hold me to that!" Read my journal, and see what he has done for me. Shirley... -
Any Bay Area California Sleevers?
meeganlee replied to Cholula's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am interested in having a monthly meeting in San Rafael. Is anyone in Marin? Any thoughts? I wonder if I contact Kaiser if they might have a room where we could meet, and possibly anyone to lead it. They don't have a bariatric center there. Please let me know if you would be interested. Thanks! -
August Bandsters How are you Doing So Far
salsa1877 replied to MissNilsa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Okay I am as tight as Scrouge McDuck today. I have had a TERRIBLE time with TERRIBLE pain everytime I eat. I called the doc today to reschedule my fill (they wanted me to come in on Jan 21- uhhh NO!) and talked to the nurse about how tight I am. Her suggestion is that I should come in. Again I am 5-6 hours away with a terrible snowstorm blowing in to the mountain passes as we speak. However there is a bariatric surgeon in the neighboring town so I may call them tomorrow and see how much it would cost for a tiny unfill. If it is cheaper than flying over, I may do it. After eating my egg this morning I thought I was going to die. I just got through with dinner and it wasn't much better. I was doing fine for the last few days, but today this band just tightened up like there was no tomorrow. I usually am not hungry but today I actually got hungry (growling tummy and everything) because I just couldn't get food down. It is funny, I don't normally feel hunger in my stomach, but I can tell when I need food because it feels like my eyes are starting to sink in to the back of my head. I know, BIZARRE! Hey but I am an odd duck anyways! I was at 348 calories before I got some chicken pureed in alfredo sauce down. Normally I wouldn't eat as much alfredo sauce, but I wanted some calories! I am going to go to mushies for a few days and see if I can get that to work. If I have to go to liquids at any point I am going in to get an unfill. I really don't see how people would want to be this tight. I guess to each their own. Pizzicato - So I think you got my opinion on being too tight. I just can't do this way tight thing. I think you are doing MARVELOUS! We are always going to have mental lapses and times when you are feeling down. I had that feeling just this weekend. Today I feel much better...well except the fact that I can't eat anything. GRRRRR Well I am going to sit and watch tv. I am taking a night off from exercising. I just don't have any energy after the first day back at school! -
Joyce, I think it would be a great bonding experience for you and her to go thru it together and be each others support. Maybe you could do yours first, and let her see how you have to adapt to banded life so she knows first hand right infront of her face the sacrifices she will have to make. I am 26 and just reconnected with my dad about a year ago. He is Morbidly obese and has high blood pressure and diabetes. I research lap band and other bariatric sugeries and decided to choose the band. I am a self pay cause my ins wouldn't cover it cause I didn't have any health related issues-YET! I made arangements to go to MX as it is cheaper than the US, then told my dad I was considering it. He flipped out when he found out it was in MX. I then showed him where it would be done, the reviews, the before and after pix of patients, and told him all my mental issues. He came around. I quietly snuck off to MX got it done and came home. I talked to him one day afterward and he "said so now when do you think you are going to get this done" I said," I already did!" Well he laughed and said I should have know. His main concern was not the procedure, it was the sanitation Issues of the MX hospital. He didn't want me to get staff or some other infection. He is wonderful and supportive, he makes sure I take my vitamins and get my protien. In a way he is kinda making up for not being in my life when I was a kid, thru no fault of his own (my mother took me away from him.) Anyways, If he is anything like my dad and sees that this is something that will make his daughter's quality of life better, I am sure he will be supportive. Even if he is not at first, you could always go my route and sneek off to do it. At least I semi prepared my dad! LOL!

Tomorrow is the big day...feeling happy but nervous. This is the second bariatric procedure I've had. Ten years ago, I had a lap band procedure, but the band was removed in an emergency surgery about one year ago. Turns out, 1/3 of my stomach slipped through my band. Very painful. I was really worried about putting the weight back on, and I had gained 20 pounds since the removal of the band. I was supposed to have the surgery on January 3, but it had to be postponed. So, Happy Valentine's Day to me!

Wow, have you gone meatless too?? I am a Sleeve to RNY revision. I've always LOVED meat and milk products and eggs and butter etc etc. All 40 years of my life I have never gone without it! And I ate it with my band, and with my Sleeve. So here's how the Vegan happened. My doc had me on clear liquids for 3 weeks with no diary...then told me to add back in eggs, and grounded meat. And I LOVE yogurt, milk, cream, Cheese OMG, on my last trip from France I had a WHOLE suitecase Packed with cheese from Hard to downright Stinky! I'm a certified Cheesaholic! But, I survived the 3 weeks without it, and without much veggies, fruits etc. But I was tired, and felt malnutritioned and unhealthy and constipated etc. Which is kinda to be expected. But seeing as this is not my first rodeo, I wanted to listen to my body more and not repeat the same mistakes. So...I started to educate myslef of nutrition nightly to see how best I can support my body through the healing process and nourish it while loosing weight. One profound influence was watching the documentary "What the Health" on Netflix (I so recommend you watch that!). So I replaced my morning Egg (s) with my Green Smoothie (which seamlessly incorporates my 1 a day Bariatric Vitamin chew from ProCar Bariatric health and the rest was history. Like right now, post my dinner, I'm not just feeling full, I'm feeling Satisfied and harmonious. Hard to explain but there is a difference. Like I said, I know it's not for everyone, but I'm super excited about the results, not just in the scales, so if anyone is cooking a vegetable or even a meat, I would love to be inspired. Because that said, it's not like I'll never touch another chicken or egg again, just for now, I'm doing so well without, trying not to tinker with the formula. Veggie or not, we need to learn how to cook again and enjoy a positive relationship with food again, but with Bariatric friendly healthy food, so we don't feel deprived and one fine day when we can eat more, start slipping into old habits. So were you Veterinarian before or thinking of becoming? Would love to hear more about your veggie meals. I try to post mine -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?

Hello everyone. I am new here. December 14th I am going to have GSV in Mexico at ALO Bariatrics with Dr. Ramirez. I start my pre-op diet on Monday and my clear liquid the week after. They have been wonderful. I am so excited. -
When I started considering WLS, particularly VSG Surgery, I researched extensively. I read medical studies, case histories, personal blogs and watched hundreds of hours of YouTube videos posted by patients and bariatric surgeons. I cannot remember where I read or saw the European study called "The Three Month Marker", nor have I been able to find the article or video again. The "supposed" study was of VSG patients and their success rates. The results of the study indicated that the total average weight loss at 12 months post-op was double the amount lost at the 3 month post-op mark for patients who closely followed the bariatric guidelines. Has anyone else heard about "The Three Month Marker"? For those who are at least 12 months post-op, does this study relate to your experience?

How did you handle telling everyone about your surgery
Kindle replied to vincereautmori's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
So I was going to be very discreet about my surgery and only told 4 people.... my business partner (to explain the time off), a friend here in Idaho who had gastric bypass years ago (for some insight and support), my sister in Wisconsin (she accompanied me to TJ for surgery), and my parents in Arizona(because my sister convinced me how pissed they'd be if they found out afterwards). In the course of 3 weeks, my partner told her whole family and any friends that asked why I wasn't around at Christmas time. My friend told a number of mutual friends because "it's no big deal and they will all see you losing weight anyways", my sister told most of the rest of my family, including brother, nieces and nephews, and my mom told any family members that my sister missed -aunts and uncles, and everybody she talks to in her retirement park down in Arizona. Today I walked into my beauty salon and my nail tech insisted on knowing how I lost so much weight. I'm a terrible lier so ended up telling her about the surgery and kept the entire salon of patrons entertained with my tale of bariatric surgery in Tijuana. One of them ended up getting the name and contact info for my surgeon! So my original plan to keep this a secret has gone all to shit, but Luckily I have had nothing but supportive feedback. If anyone is saying anything negative, at least they are doing it behind my back -
Anyone scheduled with Dr. Alejandro Lopez at VIDA Hospital Feb or March
mdlange replied to SleevedNFree's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hi everybody! My VSG surgery was last Wednesday Feb 4. I used Dr. alejandro lopez with Specialized Bariatrics at Vida Hospital. Walking into the hospital was like walking into an Architectural Digest photo shoot! Absolutely beautiful, state of the art. My husband and I were treated so very well there by everyone we came into contact with. Every step was discussed, explained until we no longer had any questions. The surgery went very well, recovery was painful but tolerable. I was up and walking the next morning, trolling the halls. I was in a private room Thursday morning and it was super fancy! Silk quilts, infinity marble sinks. But super low toilets. They seriously need to get taller toilets! OK, so I start drinking, expecting the worse, and wow, no issues! I can drink Water, broth, gatorade, anything I want! And plenty of it! On Thursday I guess I slept a little too much and didn't get enough Fluid in and got a horrible headache. I sipped-sipped-sipped it away! No drugs needed, just more hydration. Released from hospital Friday, started running low grade fever Friday night. Sandra, our coordinator, came to the hotel, took my temp and called the Dr. He spoke with my husband on the phone and said this was not out of the ordinary but he wanted to stay on top of it. Sandra went out and picked up a prescription for me and brought it back to the hotel (that always happens in the US, right?!?). I ran a little temp on and off Fri-Sun. Never higher than 100. Fever free since Sunday evening. Trip home was easy-peasy. Drinking plenty of Protein shakes, broth, water, ION drinks, and doing great! I do get weary in the afternoons, so I sit down for a while, sometimes nap. I have lost 10 pounds in this past week. I would do this all over again in a hot minute! I am eternally grateful to the veterans on this site like @ who guided me through this entire experience and kept me from freaking out. The only way I can repay their generosity is to pay it forward! I love being on the LOSERS BENCH! -
February/March 2015 Self Payers in Mexico
defibvt replied to defibvt's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
My sister had her surgery done here in Texas last July and has already passed her goal weight. My insurance does not cover bariatric surgery, yes I work for a hospital and my insurance is sub par. I've been researching my options and self pay here in the States is just too expensive. I hope to hear more on your progress with setting up your surgery. For me, it almost feels surreal. I saw the loop that my sister had to jump through and it seems just so much nicer. In planning for the late winter months, I am hoping to avoid the spring break crowd and allow me time to spend my spring and summer as much as possible outside to gain the momentum of recovering and weight loss. -

Surgeon's advice after vomiting
Guest replied to lizonaplane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think I've given anyone reason to believe I am not fully aware of what the 2-week pre-op phase is intended for. This can be achieved by any calorie deficit, does not require a liquid diet, and you need only to be in immediate caloric deficit for a short time for the liver to shrink. Like I said, great that it worked for you. I have absolutely no motivation not to lift you up. But ceteris paribus, fewer people will get life-saving bariatric surgery if put on a months-long diet to qualify. The surgery is designed to help that diet work. We don't require ACL patients to go to physio 3x week for six months to qualify for ACL replacement. -
Are you a member of the polar bear club?

Let me preface this by saying I'm one of those crazy Scandinavians. We get put outside to sleep when we're babies, for hours, also in sub-zero temperatures. I love the cold, love sleeping in a bedroom so cold I can see my own breath. You just sleep so well. This didn't change while getting fat, obviously. Then, bariatric surgery happened. 1) Immediately. Had to change my bedroom temp from 40F to 78F. No, literally. 2) Yes. A week ago. 13 months out. Bedroom temp is down to 60F. 3) It's not just lack of insulation, but that's part of it. What you're experiencing now will get worse, and then it'll get better. 4) See above. Your body is busy with other things. -

Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Dairymary replied to sleeve 4 me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In reality MANY people regain a significant amount of the weight they lost after having bariatric surgery. Research at one north Carolina clinic found that 30% regain all the weight in 2-3 years.http://www.nawls.com/public/102.cfmhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24463895 Estimates run between 30- 60. And almost everyone weight fluctuates 3-5 throughout out the day, every day. Thanks for sharing. I think it's important for people to see these stats, but more importantly the data behind the stats....... " weight regain happens when patients eat high-calorie soft foods that easily pass through the opening to the stomach. Others gain weight because they do not change their eating habits and do not lose much weight to begin with. Successful results depend on the patients willingness to adopt a long-term plan of healthy eating and regular physical activity." Knowing this puts each of us in control of which side of the stats you end up on. Just like surgery is not the magic bullet for weightloss, statistics are not the magic formula for ultimate regain. -
Anyone else have an easy/hard time with liquids during their 2 week post op? I’ve read not to be too concerned regarding “restriction” during this phase, but man I’m not feeling too much of any restriction with protein drinks or even sugar free pudding really. Maybe a little bit with the pudding... but I’m only eating the one serving. I’m also experiencing some real head hunger but I guess from what I’ve read this is somewhat normal during this full liquid stage too? Reading you guys talking about bariatric lasagna... 😳 Brother, that day can’t come soon enough! I’m suppose to move onto purées this next Thursday. Any ways, I’m having a tough time with full liquids, not because it’s hard to get them down, but because it’s easy to get them down, if that makes sense? Sticking to it regardless! I knew liquids through the holidays wasn’t going to be easy. :) I’m just hoping that once I get onto purées I feel restriction, and with that a feeling of being satisfied.

Sophie don’t worry about the stall. I was told it’s normal. Just keep getting in your protein and water. My nutritionist told me I should be sipping from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed. Except when 30min before and after a meal. So one of the ladies in my post op support group said she sets her alarm for every 8mins and takes a sip. I’ve been doing that since Monday and it is working. I drink my Premier protein drink and then I eat high protein food like Greek yogurt, turkey, etc. I was taking the Celebrate Complete 45mg but it made me nauseous and I would vomit within 5mins of taking it. So I talk to my nutritionist and I order the bariatric advantage multi vitamin chew and the chewy Iron 30mg. I chew two a day. I also do the bariatric advantage chewy 500mg calcium. Works well for me.

The actual incision doesn't hurt at all for me either, but it's more about what's on the inside of that area that could be sore. They do have to go through the abdominal wall in order to access your stomach, which could be achy for some. Is the pain in your ribs also a little achy, or is it more like quick jabs of pain? I experienced post-op late stomach spasms the other day which were mildly painful (around in the area you're describing.) For reassurance, just shoot your team a message, or give them a call. Dr. Nathan Lee in Richmond did my surgery. He wasn't my initial surgeon, but I am happy that fate brought us together on this journey. The whole team for the Bon Secours Bariatric Program is F A N T A S T I C. I absolutely love my Nurse Practitioner (who I have my follow ups with.) And take it as slow as your body needs you to be; you need to push a little, but not over exert yourself. Honestly, with the weather in Virginia (and you know what I am talking about) it could be allergy related. I am on two different allergy medications to handle post-nasal drip from the weather.

Really? My doctor said the opposite. He told me I could ditch the bariatric chewables for regular pills, but go with high quality vitamins (not the Centrum crap). I personally like the Methyl Life brand for a multivitamin. It has the best forms of each vitamin and, since they are methylated, its much easier for your body to absorb. You have to go sublingual for your biotine and B12 (they don't absorb well in pill form). I am taking Iron, Vitamin C and potassium in a pill form now. I don't take calcium since I am prone to developing kidney stones.

Lolo, what will be your 70% protein intake source? I'll try the cucumber water. I like Glaceau smart water for hydration. Still detest the protein shakes, chalky and artificial. Try to get proteins at mealtime mostly. By nutritionist, do you mean Peacock? I have yet to meet or speak to her. Never had any bariatric pre-op nutritional counseling with her - did you? My surgery date was quick pace. 206 is good! That's 3 pounds off 209 stall! And, 4 pounds closer to 200! Be patient with yourself, Ms. "A" type... You're doing fabulous! Maybe onederland mid-february instead? ;] I am down from 225 now to 220. Happy weekend!
