Cocktails???

My doctor isnt so strict when it comes to drinking alcohol after having the band. He recommends staying away from carbonated drinks and only having 1-2 because you will get drunk faster. 4 weeks after the band you will be back to normal. I was about 99% back after a week

Sobriety and The Lap Band

I have only drunk twice since being banded and both times it only took a very small amount of wine for me to feel the effects! I am usually happy to be designated driver as this gives me a good reason for not drinking. Besides, I can't dance properly when drinking and I can't rehydrate while dancing if I'm drinking alcohol, so it's water all the way - usually!

Sobriety and The Lap Band

I haven't had a drop of alcohol since right before I was banded. I will partake once I reach goal though.

Sobriety and The Lap Band

i'm forced to be sober by the surgeon's restrictions - couldn't drink during 14 day pre-op diet - cannot drink 6-8 weeks following surgery during healing. I'm looking forward to my first drink after healing. I may end up pretty much quitting drinking though or only doing it every great once in a while because on the dr.'s 800 calorie per day diet - it leaves very little room for the calories from alcohol (even though i would only do a shot of absolute mixed with crystal light - the fewest calories possible). Best of luck to you!

Eating Poll

A. No carbonated drinks (and I am surprised that I don't even miss them!) I have the very occasional alcohol and even then it is associated with dancing so they balance each other out (little alcohol, lots of dancing!)

Eating Poll

From the beginning,I have made mostly healthy choices, never denied myself. However I still don't drink carbonated drinks& very little alcohol. My theory is...why drink 150 calories when I can eat it! It is calories in,calories out. I have been exercising 3-4days/wk from the beginning.

Hello

Hello my name is Angie, I am 39 years young from Pennsylvania. I have my first of 4 monthly appointments on July 18, 2011. I currently weigh 288 and 5' and have a BMI of 56. I have type II insulin dependent diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, non alcoholic fatty liver disease, asthma, edema of feet legs and ankles, and am in constant pain upon movement. starting Feb. 16, 2011 until June 3,2011 I have been hospitalized 13 times for my asthma and diabetes and other related issues including paralysis with unknown cause. Total days in hospital 63. I am currently on 12 different meds, and hate taking them. I am excited as well as nervous at same time. I have been following 1800 calorie diabetic diet for 4 years and no weight lost but none gained. I have recently had to file for Retirement Disability from my job. My asthma is to the point that one wrong fragrance I am in what the have labeled status asthmaticus. I only leave my house for Dr. appointments and quick grocery trips....... usually my kids run into the store not me. Thus my journey has begun...................

IT'S FINALLY OVER!!!!!!

Thank you, unfortunately however i had to start a very strict diet . . . i'm glad i have the sleeve cause it helps with the hunger, I don't feel it anymore. . . i do only about 900 calories or less a day and no more then 30-40 g of carbs a day, less if possible, and tons of water. . . i've cut all diet sodas, alcohol, sweets, flour products, fruit, etc. . . reminds me of my olden days before the sleeve, only this time it's easier cause again, the sleeve helps combat the hunger. . . good luck to you and i'll let you know when i hit onderland in hopefully 5 weeks!

Madder than A Wet Hen

Hi Mini, well darlin' I'm sorry to say the honeymoon is over and you may have to go on a diet. . .here is my depressing story . . . I've been stalled and gaining slowly over 7 months. I stopped dead in my tracks in January and 2 weeks ago i weighed myself and realized i had GAINED 15 lbs over the 7 months. . . WTF was my inital statement, then realization struck. . . i have to go back and do what i've been doing ALL MY LIFE. . . I have to go back on a diet. . . so out came adkins and make sure that i don't go over 900 calories and have less then 40grams of carbs everyday for the next 6 weeks (I'm doing this in little 6 week increments until i reach well below my goal) . . . well my 1st week was a total success I lost 10 lbs. . . I cut out all diet sodas, all alcohol, all breads, no flour products, no fruits, no sweets at all, i drink only water and crystal lite and coffee. . . a basic meal for me now is 2 eggs in the morning, 1 can of tuna or chicken breast mixed with mayo (1 tblspn) for lunch, and some sort of meat, be it fish, chicken, turkey, or shellfish 1/2 cup for supper. . then water water water until i go to bed and start all over the next day. . . ugh i'm glad i have the sleeve cause it really does help with the hunger and mostly it's head hunger, so the water kills that. . . be strong and fight! This isn't for everyone, but it's working for me. . . good luck to you all and i'll definately herald my success when i hit onederland in about 5 weeks! Wish me luck

The "Official" liquid diet

Thank you so much for that tip with the alcohol since we have all been there before it is totally believable!

The "Official" liquid diet

GOOD LUCK! parties and such are the hardest part of this but i will say this - you are probably way more conscious of not eating/drinking alcohol than other people are of noticing you not eating/drinking. There are ways to avoid scrutiny by walking around with a plate with a little food on it or a drink cup in your hand (just put water/crystal light in it). Don't worry - and if anyone asks why you aren't drinking alcohol - do what i did when i first learned i was pregnant but before we started sharing the news with others - tell the person you had a little too much to drink the night before and can't do it again today - any drinkers will understand that and back off LOL!

The "Official" liquid diet

So.. today is the official start of my pre-liquid diet. I say official since I decided to test it out this week and see how I would do. I actually wanted to make sure I didn't absolutely hate the shakes since I'm extremley picky. The aren't bad as long as they are extremely cold and I don't take too long to finish them, hope that doesn't work against me in the long run. I finally managed to like the chobani greek yogurt. Does anyone know if the fruit on the bottom is ok for this brand? It has 14g of protein and is great for you. I digress. I managed to lose 4.6 lbs this week from Monday-Fri and that was even with a pasta day on Thursday and a class of wine and a shared app on Friday night and that made me feel great! I woke up this morning and feel I'm raring to go and mentally prepared. The only downside, of course my boss is having a huge get together today and I have to go. It would be anti-social of me not to show and I will be the only one not eating or drinking alcoholic beverages. sigh..... Well, wish me luck, I am now 10 days from surgery and am waiting on pins and needles!

What is to come?

We dont say alcoholics are taking the easy way out when they enter rehab, we commend them for it because quitting anything cold turkey is next to impossible when you are truly addicted. To me, WLS isnt any different. And although I havent been sleeved just yet, from all the posts I've read on VST, it's still a big struggle. You have 80% of your stomach removed, but the sad news is that our "fat brains" dont go out into the medical waste container along with it. We have to retrain and recondition ourselves on how to eat. We cant just pick any old piece of food up and eat it, we have to make conscious decisions which is certainly a battle when you're addicted to food. So although the weight loss stories sound phenomenal and seeing the before and after pics are mind blowing, dont ever think that making this major change to better yourself, your health and your quality of life "the easy way out". I wish you all the best and much success on your journey. I enjoyed this post, hope to read more from you soon!

Cocktails???

my dr. said 6-8 weeks after surgery before having alcohol - each doc different. trust me i'm counting down the days.

Cocktails???

4 weeks is plenty and yes, you'll be able to have a drink or two- just know that the alcohol might hit you a lot faster after surgery than it does now.

How do I make myself stop eating?!

Windy- thanks- I wish it were that easy. It is an addiction- just like an alcoholic or druggie. I try to not eat sweets and then I cant control it- and have to have it. It is a food addiction I wish I could break. If there is anyone who has had food addiction- who can help I would love to know. Some people say "go cold turkey" and I try for a while and just cant seem to stay away from it long. I am sure some people know what I am talking about. I do eat healthy things too. I just like to eat! I wish I could turn off the switch in my head.
17. I made the decision at Universal Studios when I couldn't get on a ride that just 6 months earlier I could get on. I looked into surgery 10 years ago, but wasn't ready to give up food and alcohol at the time (I was 20). Now I've grown up and out so it's time!! It has taken me 2 months to get all the tests and dr. clearances and my surgery date is in 19 days and I'm not even cranky on my pre-op diet! Know that you are ready to make the change and if your not... its not your time yet. If you are jump on the bandwagon and we will all be here for you! Good Luck!
18. Gosh...I haven't drank alcohol in months... but this week I've had about 6 drinks spanning over 4 days. This isn't much by any means but even 1 drink is too much after surgery. The company I work for had a big breakthrough and we had plenty reasons to Celebrate so I allowed myself to indulge. No more from this point though...
19. To me that sounds like a gallbladder attack. If you still have your gallbladder and if you're still experiencing it, or if it happens again, definitely go to the ER or your doc (primary care or surgeon) so they can rule it out. Alcohol can cause gallbladder attacks, and many people have gallbladder problems after bariatric surgery for some reason.
20. I think that the first few weeks we are more prone to worrying about all the details. I was terrified about my stomach ripping open - that was my personal phobia. I reviewed my "what to eat"lists several times a day, just to make sure I was doing the right thing. After the initial 8 weeks of healing and food transition, I started to calm down. You will find that the no drinking while eating thing is a habit. Once you have it in your head, it wil become part of your routine. There is no promise that we will not regain the weight we lose. Luckily, this procedure removes the stretchy part of your stomach so it is unlikely to expand past a certain point. That said, you could eat ice cream 4 times a day and gain weight. Take advantage of this time in the first 6 months to really take your new habits to heart. You will have a new taste for healthier foods - that will save you in the long run. As your capacity increases a little, you will be more likely to fill yourself with healthy foods. At 4 months, I still don't like sweets and can't drink alcohol. I tolerate chicken better than beef, so that's what I eat :-) I don't count cals or carbs, but my stomach seems to be happiest when I feed it healthy stuff. Right now, just worry about staying hydrated and eating your Protein. Good luck--
21. Was at a friends house lastnight and had a shot of alcohol with everyone and was instantly sick. Just got my second fill friday and have good restriction but no problems with liquids. I started dry heaving a few minutes after and only air came out like belching. Then a pain started in my back and it comes and goes every few minutes. Liquids are moving through slowly but I figured I just pissed off my stomach and it may be swollen. Now this pain in my back just woke me up and I'm thinking of going to the ER. Dear god please let my band still be in place! I need guidance, and to think all this trouble just to try the new jim bean devils cut!
22. I'm hoping we can get this thread up and running again. I've been going to OA for the past 6 months or so. The sleeve ended the physical part of my food problem but the emotional/spiritual difficulties are still there. I don't have other addictions---apparently food has always been my drug of choice, but since VSG things have been changing. First, I developed bulimia. It wasn't too bad by bulimia standards: I'd find myself purging (barfing specifically) about 1X a week, usually because I ate too much and was uncomfortable. The first 1 or 2X I did it, I thought, "No big deal. I just need to learn how much I can eat." The thing is that the problem didn't go away after a few times; it kept up on a pretty regular basis. The other thing is that after purging, I'd want to eat more. Now that's insane. Never really had bulimia before the surgery. I tried purging several times in college but it seemed so painful and not worth it, so I quit. It was a surprise to see it surface after the surgery. It was also a blessing because it was sooo dysfunctional that it promptly led me to OA. I can justify a lot but it's hard to rationalize throwing up. So here I am in OA and am really grateful to be there. Other addictions seem to be creeping up but they are relatively mild, so I'm just keeping an eye on them for now. I used to hate to drink alcohol but now I enjoy it. I don't think I have a problem with alcohol but I see that I could develop one over time. It's so weird because I used to drink about 3 -4 times per year. Now I have a beer or 2 about 1X a week. Quite a change. I'm also spending more. Now I was a real tightwad before so it isn't all bad for me to be spending more on everything but it is kind of alien to me. Before I was really controlled with money and alcohol and really crazy/reckless with food. Now I'm controlled with food and looser in the other two areas.
23. Sorry I missed the post too. I mostly focus on 70-80 or sometimes more on protein and by the time i get that in i really have no room for many carbs so it makes it easy to also do low carb as well. Some days i have a bit higher carbs if i do a protein bar cuz of the sugar alcohols, but i don't have one everyday so i don't worry about it. I want my eating to be more natural and not so much a "diet". I try to stay away from the dieting mentality, cuz if i make things completely off limits, i just crave it even more which could in the old days lead to binges. I do know about how many calories I end up with cuz i use myfitnesspal to keep up with my protein and it gives me the cal/carb count as well.
24. My surgeon says 600-800 calories during the losing stage and at least 60 gms of Protein, but I could not fit all that in until about 8 weeks out. I am low-carbing of my own volition, so no more than 30 carbs/day for me, although I read here about people losing just fine eating carbs. I count all carbs, simple, complex, fiber, sugar alcohols, all of them. I am naturally a meat-lover, was before surgery and I am now, so low-carb is easy for me. My first month I lost 22 lbs. I think you're doing fine.
25. Hello My name is Marcia, I use to be addicted to drugs but got clean and then got married and never realized until yesterday that I had an addiction to food. I have WLS tomorrow July 13th and the pre-op liquid diet showed me just how addicted I was. I talked to my therapist on Monday and she told me what I was describing was a food addiction. It's about control for me. Just like drugs were and then you realize you never were in control I come from a family with a lot of addictions; Drugs, Alcohol etc. A lot are clean from one thing and then substitute a new addiction. I am hoping that now that I know this and can have help from my therapist I will be able to succeed in finally losing the weight I have packed onto my body.
