    I miss salad?

I was cleared for salad at 7 weeks. I'm 3 months out now and eat them often. My little salads are full of protein, at least 20g. I have my veggies but I add bacon, hard boiled egg, grilled chicken, and cheese. I chop everything up tiny so there's a mix of protein and veggies in every bite. I also use Bolthouse Farms yogurt dressing.
  2. My pureed food stage was brief.... couple days. As long as it is tolerated well, my dr moves his patients to soft foods. I had a difficult time eating enough Protein, so there wasn't room for vegetables then. Even now, a couple ounces of chicken/fish and I am full. I did use some baby applesauce. Tried Cream of Wheat twice, and it was uncomfortable going down. I may have made it too thick. Otherwise, Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese, sugar free puddings....all worked well. I am over 4 weeks now and I can eat almost anything if I chew it well. I just don't have room for alot.
  3. I am almost 4 weeks out and I can barely get 500 calories in. When they said soft foods they mean yogurt, cottage cheese that sort of thing- not soft lean cuisines. In my pre-op education I was told no bread, Pasta, rice. What are your Protein goals? Are you meeting them? I hope you can talk with your surgeon/nutritionist ASAP! I agree with others who said go back to the hospital. I can't even fathom how you could eat 3 lean cuisines in a row after bypass surgery... Mind blown! I hope they are find out what is going on here--- this doesn't make any kind of sense. ????????
  4. I am 4 days out. Just started protein shakes, drinkable yogurt and soups. My question is I can easily drink a shake or yogurt. I sip, but I can finish in about 15-20 minutes. My question is: is this normal? I see so many people not being "able" to do this? And, does stretch my stomach?

    Is dumping syndrome forever?

It is not expected to cause dumping but that doesn't mean that Sugar Free doesn't have sugar alcohols and those have been known to cause dumping. I drink sugar free drinks, eat sugar free puddings, popscicles, Jell-O, some ice creams and yogurts; I have never experienced dumping. And to be fair I've had a few items (very little) that had plain ol' white sugar. No issues. Everyone is different.

Anyone having surgery in Oct ?

I went back on Monday which was 13 days after surgery. I teach first grade, so I'm moving a lot. I did fine. I was really tired Monday-Wednesday nights. But the last two have been better. I pack a ton of stuff in my lunch bag just in case: Greek yogurt, sf pudding, peanut butter/crackers, string cheese, protein shake. It has worked so far! Good luck! You can have crackers and chesse I was told baby type food until I'm 4 weeks out just are you able to handle the chesse and crackers? My surgery was Oct 5th and I'm hoping I'm able to tolerate that type of food soon. I haven't had any problems with the crackers or cheese. I just chew everything to mush!

    Greek yogurt:( yuck !

I'm not much on yogurt, but I did stumble on that Oikos Triple Zero Greek stuff during the months leading up to my pre-op diet. I stress that I don't care for yogurt in general.....but this stuff is great. I'm glad I found out about it. It needs nothing extra to taste really good. My husband who hasn't had any surgery and isn't overweight (brat lol). Loves the triple zero yogurt too. He actually likes almost all the "healthy" food that I'm eating also. Like the veggie chips (pre op) even my broth I drank lol. veggie chips? Do you make them or buy them I'm trying to healthy stuff I like ..it's a process These were before surgery. They were the Veggie Straws from the grocery store. I'll be 7 weeks this Wednesday and should be released to eat home made veggie chips! (Hopefully) lol!! I'm doing the 6 month medically supervised diet. So I'm going to try these! Thank you ! I hope you get cleared to eat the homemade version veggie chips!

    I thought i was ready

The grocery shopping gets easier. I still buy some foods I don't eat i.e. Bread, waffles, cereal etc for my boys. I buy a lot of yogurt, cheese, almonds, occasional deli meat for myself. As far as dinners go, I can pretty well eat whatever meat I am cooking for my family, plus a bit of the veggies, I just skip the rice/pasta/potatoes.

  12. Not sure if yesterday was a win or a fail. I made it through my first big event at work since surgery and didn't eat a donut (we get them for the staff/volunteers), and I didn't treat myself to a huge dinner of nachos or mac and cheese afterwards... BUT, I got to the end of the day, and even after having my protein yogurt snack in the evening, I was still hungry, so I ended up having a serving of roasted chickpeas and went over my allotted calories by more than 100. I did run around a lot throughout the day, but I don't know that it justified the extra calories. :/

      2goldengirl

Definitely a win. You avoided trigger foods and you were hungry and made a reasonable choice to satisfy hunger. If you wear a Fitbit or other tracker, I think you'll be astonished at the number of steps you got in yesterday. And going over by 100 calories in a single day is in no way going to derail you. Focus on the great choices you made!

Thanks... I was just on the phone with my mom, and she said basically the same thing. I have a Garmin Vivosmart tracker on my Amazon wishlist; maybe Santa will bring it to me for Christmas!

Well, you certainly picked the perfect treat to have. I do not count calories, just protein. I monitor calories and carbs but as my nut tells me, do not pay attention to calories at all in weight loss mode.

Give yourself a break you did exactly what you should have. I usually reach for nuts, jerkey or cheese when that happens. I wish I could eat chick peas because they are good for you!

    Protein

Is she on at least soft foods? Prior to that, your Protein choices are pretty limited. You can try another brand of Protein shake or another flavor. Cottage cheese, Greek Yogurt and fish are my protein favorites. I still use my Protein shakes to make sure I am hitting my goal.

    Protein

My daughter is really struggling with getting in protein. The shakes make her gag to a point she is almost vomiting. She gags on yogurt as well. Any suggestions?

    Meal / food help please!

Try stirring protein powder into other foods, if you are struggling with getting enough protein at this point and can't handle shakes. I stir 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder into 1/2 packet of low sugar oatmeal for breakfast, and the same with Greek yogurt. I've used unflavored protein powder in soup.

    Missing food you like

I used to say I eat everything I used to only in smaller more sensible amounts. Then I realized I have not had a hoagie since being sleeved. Now I'm that weird person who like health foods just as much as I love junk food. I was eating plain greek yogurt years before surgery because I like it. However I completely forgot I haven't had a hoagie until my sister bought one the other day. I literally have no desire for it. When you change your eating habits it really can effect your taste buds. You'll be fine. You will either find healthier alternatives or learn to do without.

Two additional tips: 1. Try organic dairy. I don't know why, but they seem to have much longer expiration dates sometimes. 2. Train yourself to look at expiration dates as you shop. Ask yourself whether you really think you can finish it by the date listed. For example, if you find yogurt with an expiration date a month away, stock up. If it's a week away, just grab a couple. Good luck!

    3 days post op

I only got about 30 grams today! I'm so worried I'm screwing up already. I got about 46 oz of water. I have no desire to eat, I forced down 3 oz of Greek yogurt with extra protein mixed in. I've been having diarrhea nonstop since I tried drinking some protein shake. I just feel like I should be doing better than I am.
  19. I had my surgery Monday. In the weeks leading up to it everyone at the weight loss program, and people who know I'm doing this, all asked if I was excited. I felt badly because I wasn't. I told everyone to ask me again in 6 months and that for know I'm trying to keep a firm grasp on the realities that come with so much change. I worry that this won't work for me, even though my surgeon is confident I'm going to do really well. Before surgery I was super worried about how hard it would be to drink and eat post-op. I had heard a gamut of reactions and worried I would be struggling. I've been dehydrated before and it's scary. Fortunately after a couple days I'm doing well meeting my Fluid and Protein requirements. I also feel pretty great- no major pain, no regular discomfort, not too fatigued. Pretty lucky. I'm following doctor's orders and taking: omeprazole, some stomach and bowel spasm med, Zofran, Colace, and Aleve. Between shakes, cottage cheese and yogurt I'm getting in plenty of protein. Water is getting easier to drink daily. And warm chamomile tea goes down really easily. I'm aware that there are many challenges ahead as I move to different stages of the diet, watch the scale plateau, etc. But that awareness doesn't bum me out. I feel prepared AND I think I'm actually finally feeling excited! I"m down 7.5 lbs. I wasn't going to check before my 2 week check-in but I put on a pair of jeans today I wasn't able to wear for the past 6 months and they were comfortable. Woohoo! I've got to start putting together my fitness routine. I have twin babies so it will be tough to make the time. I'm not looking to get obsessive like I have in the past. I'm shooting for 3 proper workouts a week along with more walking in my regular day. Longer walks with the stroller, adding an extra 15 minutes to the dog walk, etc. Hopefully this will help me feel ready for a winter season with lots of snowboarding. It will be amazing to fit into my snow pants again. I've been lurking for a while and so many of you helped me to make this decision. Thank you. I hope that participating now will keep me in touch with people going through this right now too, and to connect me with others who have navigated this journey before me. I'm ready to believe this will work for me. And I'm excited for good things ahead. Wish me luck!

    What has Highest protein content?

15 g is too low for what else you can get. Premier Protein ready made shakes are great and is 30g for 11 ounces. I also use Precision Engineered whey isolate powder - chocolate and vanilla. (The vanilla even smells amazing.) Both have 30g per scoop. I have mixed 1/2 scoop in 1/2 container of yogurt or 1/2 scoop in a sugar free Jello pudding snack in addition to using them in shakes. FYI - supposedly your body only absorbs approx. 25g per hour, so if you are going to go the route of something with 40g +, you will have to split it into different servings.

    Orbera Success strategies

You seem to be doing great , I am on day 6 and not really eating to much at all . Spoonful of yogurt here and there . I could not agree more with you about the planning around food . The past week has been really different from previous Friday night dinner out at our fav Italian restraunt.

    Meal / food help please!

Monday I begin week 5 post op. I can tolerate chicken, Soups, a few crackers(they mush up really well when you eat them), but I don't have crackers very often as 5 = 10 carbs. I still drink the Premium Protein shakes, along with EAS Carb Control ones. I hate greek yogurt, but mix fruit in it and eat it once in awhile. Cottg cheese works, and I make pizza with the cauliflower crust, and can eat a small square. I found a protein pudding, but it's expensive, so I only eat that once in awhile. I ordered some Liquid Protein, 15g per ounce. I thought that would help me get the protein quota I need, because I can't eat that much yet. I can't tolerate the chaulky chewable Vitamin, so I got that in a liquid too. I tried tuna fish with boiled egg in it(made tuna salad), it did not sit well. Not sure if it was the egg or the tuna. Hated coffee right off the bat, but I can drink a little now. About half a cup and I get done with it. I seem to be doing ok. I feel pretty good! People say they can see the weight loss, but I look in the mirror and see the same person as before the surgery. I can wear3 different sizes of clothes, which is odd, just depends on the brand I guess. I've lost a total of 50 lbs since I started this adventure 3/31/15, but only 18 since the surgery. I go for my 6 week follow-up on 11/10, and I hope to have lost some more weight by then. I hope he clears me for aerobics and weight training, I'd like to get some more weight off by the end of the year.

Post op 4 days need help

Yes! I was expecting to have the magical "no hunger". I also felt like I had true gnawing knotted hunger pangs. Not boredom... hunger. I upped my Omeprazole to twice a day and it literally stopped the hunger feelings. I also was able to start on fuller liguids at day 7... so that may have played a role as well. pureed Soups, yogurt, and sugarfree pudding were heavenly at that point. Just know that this stage will pass in a matter of days, be it 7 days or 14 days, you will soon be progressing to the next stage of foods and be able to have some smart filling options. Hang in there!
  24. I was sleeved on the 14th and I've noticed that water is like my worst enemy right now. I can have gatorade, teas, popsicles, (all sugar free of course) and I can eat oatmeal and yogurt with no issues but the second I try to introduce water it lands like a rock in my stomach and hurts for about 5 minutes. I used to love water and I have tried room temp rather than cold but nothing works. Anyone else having this problem? Or better yet did anyone have this issue and figure out a way to overcome it? I'm going crazy because I felt like water was my break from all the sweet tasting stuff and now I don't even have that.

    Food Waste

Well you can freeze milk, or get a quart or even a pint at a time. Yogurts maybe instead of buying 7 for a week or whatever, think about how many you actually use in an average week and only buy as many as you can use. I got some nifty storage containers that can hold about half a yogurt at a time to store meals after surgery. That way they don't go bad. You can also freeze them and it's almost like an ice cream treat. On the ricotta bake you can freeze the mix and make it as you want it. I do that with my ricotta based lasagna filling all the time which is basically the same recipe. You also might want to think about getting a vacuum sealer and sealing up individual portions of food and freezing the rest. I do a lot of that for my kids to make easy to eat meals they can just heat n eat(like a lean cuisine or kid cuisine).
