    Jan 2019 bypass buddies

Two days til surgery - lets get this thing going!! Life has been super hectic since I started the 2 week preop LIQUID diet... my car was totalled by a wrong way driver the day I started (everyone is ok...my poor new car is in SUV heaven) so every moment I have has been spent on working, dealing with that or trying to find a new car before I have surgery. Which, I will admit, has helped distract me! I cheated big time on Saturday - after 12 hours of car shopping AFTER working a 10 hour overnight shift at work - I was tired, crabby and...yes...STARVING. So...I MAY have had about 2 ounces of salmon with my miso broth dinner. Ok..and a potsticker and a half. Only human
  2. Good luck to you tomorrow - I'll be watching for your updates Someone else said it here but please - let them know about your anxiety and they will help you with some - I think they said "Happy Juice". My first surgery was an emergency procedure about 10 years ago and I was a wreck. They anticipate nerves and WILL help you through it. Remember to breathe! We're all behind you!!

    50+

Age is a number. I had my surgery in August 2016 at age 55. I'm 57 now. I've lost about 150 pounds. I am a nationally ranked fencer in my age group (24th among women 50-59 and 33rd for all women over 40), can deadlift 235 pounds and back squat 225. What's old? I have more energy than either my 19 or 16 year old daughters. I'm in better shape. I regularly get checked out by people at the gym (especially from behind) who are then a bit surprised when I turn around and they realize I'm not 30. (Although I look pretty good for my age.) Age is a number. Don't let it define you. the only regret I have is waiting until I was 55 to do this.

    6 week post-op update

I actually need to update them. I'm at 169 lbs. now. I'm currently wearing a size 10, but I will be needing a size 8 probably before the month is over. I'm 4 lbs. from my goal weight. I think i'm going to try and go down to 145 lbs. instead.

    Pre op

From what I can tell, it varies from doctor to doctor. I just met with my surgeon for the first pre-op visit on 1-8-19. We just talked about pretty much everything relating to my weight. How long i've been overweight, all the things I've tried to do help lose weight etc. What my "vices" were, what I expect from the surgery.. etc. then we discussed my insurance and coverage. Then I spoke with their insurance person and she sent over my information for the 3 appointments I need to do. Psychologist appointment, 1 nutrition class and an Upper GI x-ray which I had completed on Friday. I have my nutrition class tomorrow and I am still waiting to be scheduled with the psychologist. Best of luck to you!!

    How long will I lose?

Hard to say I started at 393 and 10 months later I’m 222 but I ride a bike 75 miles a week. It’s different for everybody

    Lap band removed!

Do you think insurance will cover removal and conversion surgery if I am no longer obese? I would like to remove the band that I had put in almost 10 years ago, but am at a healthy weight. I feel like it is a ticking time bomb. I do have problems with acid reflux and food getting stuck if I’m not careful. I’m afraid if I just get it removed I will gain all of my weight back.

    December 2018 Sleevers!

I am a month-post op, well 5 weeks probably and noticed that when I transitioned from fluids to soft foods that I was hungry every two hours. I can't each much at a time but I can eat often. I'm getting about 900 calories/day. No trouble getting in a variety of liquids including Gatorade Zero, decaf diet peach tea, sugar-free flavored water, etc. I have been to the gym every day so far this year in 2019 doing 30 minutes of cardio and strength-training.

    January 2019

Had my sleeve surgery on 01-08. I’m down 8 lbs since surgery and 53 lbs from HW. Day 3 post-op before I felt a little normal, but Day 4 post-op was much better. I was able to get over 95 oz of fluid and 109 g of protein. My goal from NUT is 90/90. Still taking meds for gastric spasm and PPI for now, but was able to cut BP med in half right before surgery. Expect to be off BP med by end of month. Will take advantage of working from home next week before returning to the office on 21st.

    ❤Summer Body Routines❤

So far I've been to the gym every day this year in 2019 (all 13 days, haha) but my goal is to work out at least 4 days per week. I do 30 minutes of cardio and 10-15 minutes of strength training each session, but I want to eventually ramp up and work out harder/faster/longer, but I'm only one month post-op so I'm still healing and don't want to push it yet.

Hey all you set to have your surgery in January. I had mine done on 01/09. Would love to hear from anyone on how they are doing within the first week or so of surgery. I feel like I am pregnant. So bloated. Ug. Hoping it goes down sooner rather than later. Started weight at 230 (5'6") and am down 9 pounds in four days. Wow! So excited. Certainly no one can tell because my stomach is like a balloon!
  17. This is a question for all planners out there: How do you plan for an event or two? I am currently enrolled in Ballroom Dance Classes and i took off the 6 weeks due to surgery. There are two competitions that i actually signed up for.. a local one here in Florida that is just with the 3 local studios ( Feb 23rd) and one in September that is much larger, nationwide held in Miami. My dilemma: how in the world do i plan and determine what my weight may be in order to get the dresses i need. The dress for Feb, i can get something nice from Ross that has glitter or what not and with Valentines day and Prom coming up, dresses are starting to be on the racks but then if i wait till last minute i may not find what i need.. My biggest worry is the Sept 2019 competition. I know its far away, but i have to put my order in for my ballroom dress ( 2 of them.. a smooth and a rhythm).. I have to send measurements to the seamstress by mid july to give her time to make my custom dresses.. How do i forecast what my measurements and weight will be by the 20th of Sept. That is roughly 6 weeks from giving her a size to me using the dress. I know i will lose weight and inches over the 6 weeks, but how do you gauge how much? These dresses are not cheap, some run into thousands. Mine will run about 700-800 for each dress, They dont sell them in stores as far as i know ( I am new to the ballroom world) and i cant just walk in the weekend before a competition and pick out a dress to wear .... I am really trying to plan ahead and figure out what i need to do in order to not have a dress that is too big or too small when the time comes. Thanks for any input in advance.. Truly appreciated!

    An honest update. Weight Gain

Thanks for your honest post. At 6 months out I see this can be a slippery slope and agree this is only a tool. I think you are correct, many think this is the easy way out. It sounds like you know exactly what to do. 10 pounds is fixable. You have got this!

    Smooth Moves

I've already discussed it with both surgeons in my office. I even went to the ER at Day 10 once and there was no poop in me at all, as shown on a CT scan. They said it's unusual but if I have no discomfort not to worry about it. I eventually went at Day 17. Usually I go at Day 8, but it's been about 13 days so I decided to try some laxatives. A small amount came out. I'm good. Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. Im 4 weeks post op. I think I’m eating way too fast despite eating relatively small bites and chewing a ton. How long should it take me to eat, let’s say, 2 string cheese sized-cheese sticks with a slice or two of ham or turkey deli meat? Should it take me a half an hour? Or like 10 minutes? I feel like I’m rushing because my stomach is making gurgling noises after so I know Im really rushing it.
  21. I had vsg on 1/2 and have been sleeping between 10-12 hours . My nutritionist advised against this because by doing that I don’t have enough hours to get all my fluids in 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’m sooo tired though .

    January surgeries?!

HI I am scheduled for RnY Jan, 14 2019 I am so nervous !!!
  24. Perhaps this post will help someone who is seeking to do VSG or some form of WLS because I will be honest with you about my journey. It has been 8 months since I had VSG surgery and I have lost only 44 lbs. Up to a month ago I had lost 55 lbs but I have since gained 10 lbs. There are a couple reasons for my weight loss failure and I am just putting them down in writing not so much so that folks can be critical, but more for the folks out there considering this surgery or might just have had it. I have not been committed to the process of changing bad habits or incorporating exercise into my lifestyle. I must have thought that having VSG was going to magically take away my appetite and food cravings for bad food. Guess what? I was starving the day after surgery! My appetite really never left. So if I did not CHOOSE what to eat and what not to eat, you could pack in tons of calories even in small portions. To cut to the chase, VSG does not work if you are not disciplined with your food choices. That shouldn't be a huge revelation but I actually had a mindset that my stomach would be gone and I would not even want to eat anymore so all the weight would just melt away. It does not happen that way! I did not follow the instructions and guidelines post surgery about not eating and drinking at the same time. I had been told not to do it, I read that it would stretch your stomach pouch, but I still went ahead and did it. Guess what? My stomach has stretched and I can basically eat a small 'normal' size meal at only 7 months out when it should not be like that this early. Again, not being committed to the process I am a type II diabetic. The catch 22 is that taking insulin makes you GAIN weight. That is just the nature of insulin and the more insulin you have to take, the more you gain weight. The first 4 months after surgery I was taking hardly any insulin at all but as my stomach expanded and I was able to eat more I had to increase insulin intake. So as a diabetic I'm really supposed to be exercising to compensate for that but cant seem to get this life style discipline into my life. I have a tread mill in the spare room - what is wrong with me!!!! I am hoping that I can gather the motivation, the inspiration that inner push that I need to develop discipline in my life. i'm almost 50 years old and its really hard changing the way you have lived for so long but there are no short cuts, not even VSG 'saved' me. Sometimes I think the biggest problem and hinderance is just me because discipline does not depend on emotions - discipline is 'just do it' no matter if you 'feel' it or not...………..I NEED this, I need to get this translated from my head knowledge into practical living...….I'm rambling now I'm hoping my update in the next 3 months will be a very different one in a more successful direction

    Support and honesty needed

I actually had the surgery before my wife did. I was sleeved on May 10 of last year and she was sleeved on October 10. It certainly helped with us both going through it at roughly the same time. However, at the end of the day you are the captain of your own ship. If you want the surgery, have the surgery. However, go in knowing it isn’t the easy way out. Losing weight and keeping it off with the sleeve is hard work. You’ll be logging food, exercising and eating right. Being sleeved certainly makes it easier to get rolling but you still have to be committed to changing your lifestyle.
