In order to substain weight loss success for long term we have to learn healthy interaction with food... GENEPRO isn't food. "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them" Einstein

    Heather's Journey

Ok everyone, here goes..... I started my one week pre-op diet today. My surgery is in one week, June 7th, 2016 and my nerves are really kicking in. I have seen several people posting their stories in this forum, so I thought I'd give it a go. It will be nice to have one place I can update everyone and keep track of my progress. After reading so many inspiring stories in this discussion thread, I hope that one day, I can do the same. I'm all stocked up on Protein shakes/ powders (Premier Protein shakes, unjury protein powders, Syntrax protein powders, and GENEPRO protein powder), broths, teas, and sugar free Jello. Luckily, my pre-op diet allows a dinner consisting of 3 ounces lean meat, 1 cup veggies, 1/2 cup fruit. Thank goodness! And now for the hard part, posting my weight. Sigh.....First, my height is 5'6" HW- 290+ SW-287 GW- 160-175 There...I did it. Hopefully, I will never see those numbers again.

    Food

There are various "recipes" for shakes that you can find online, and some are surprisingly yummy. I like Unjury's chocolate Protein shake with a little PB2 powder blended in, or a Torani sugar free syrup. If you haven't checked out the blog "The World According to Eggface" I recommend popping over and looking at her shake recipes. Starting about a week out I began making smoothies using a Greek or Bulgarian yogurt that is high in protein and low in carbs and some frozen fruit. It felt more like a "normal" meal to me. Dr. Matthew Weiner is a bariatric surgeon who has a video on YouTube about the "set point smoothie" that he recommends to his patients. I also like adding GENEPRO or another unflavored Protein Powder to Crystal Light. For me finding things to look forward to and distract myself was beneficial during recovery. I took advantage of the time off to binge watch several shows everyone raves about that I'd never had time to watch, read some great books, and got little treats like fresh flowers and candles that add a simple pleasure to the day. That helped me to take my mind off food. I had cravings for things that first week that I haven't desired at all ever since. Head hunger is totally normal, and for most people it lessens with time.
  6. Genepro is a great protein powder to use.
  7. I second the recommendation for Genepro! One tiny scoop and no aftertaste at all!
  8. Musclegen GENEPRO is awesome!! 30g of Protein in one very small scoop. I add it to all kinds of things and can barely taste it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  9. Do you know what happens when you start removing hydrogen atoms from a molecule? You completely change what a thing is. Start with hydrogen peroxide....remove one hydrogen and you get Water....remove two more hydrogens and you make oxygen. Or start with formaldehyde....remove two hydrogens and you have carbon monoxide. Now think of what happens when you take protein molecules and start stripping off hydrogen atoms. What's left is certainly not protein. Your body responds to hydrogen peroxide and water and oxygen in very very different ways. You can take in all the oxygen you want...it's still not water. I would speculate that eating a molecule that used to be protein but has had its hydrogen molecules removed so it no longer resembles protein in taste, odor or physical properties is not protein. He said it himself, they turn baseballs into golf balls. But when it comes down to it, a golf ball is not a baseball. Just like GENEPRO is not protein, at least as far as human biochemistry is concerned. They STILL have not provided any scientific evidence that our bodies can utilize this "stable molecular structure". A simple pre and post protein serum level study would at least start to settle the controversy. But apparently the company's marketing ploys are so successful they don't actually need PROOF.
  10. Hubby and I are getting sleeved next Tuesday! So far we are liking premier Protein, but I also wanted to get some unflavored protein to add to things like broth (I'm going to get sick of sweet real quick). Which ones do you suggest someone suggested GENEPRO to me. Thank you for your help!

    Post op diet

I'm about two days out of surgery, just came home last night. Today I've been able to get down about 40 ounces mixed with 2 tablespoons of GENEPRO medical grade Protein which means I've gotten 60 grams of protein today! I've also been using a timer on my phone set for every 7 minutes or so. My problem hasn't been getting enough Water but drinking too fast. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Scared out of my mind

I'm going in June 8th. These Protein shakes are milk based and the protein powders don't dissolve well in Water. What do I do? I've heard GENEPRO dissolves better in water and it's tasteless. HELP???? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Post Op - Full Liquid phase

    Try genepro unflavored protein.
  14. 19 months post surgery. Been at goal for 14 months or so. This is what I ate yesterday. I do typically on the weekends have a few treats. ie last weekend I had one champagne cupcake, one slice of pizza, a bowl of Cereal and a few hot tamales at the movies. Not an entire box. I can eat anything I don't dump but will feel nauseous if I eat an entire box of hot tamales so I ration them out into a baggie for the movie . I still get my Protein in on the weekends but have what I want and then I am on the wagon come Monday. Again this works for me as I have a sweet tooth and I pretty much workout everyday. And I have never counted anything except protein and Water.....I love my nutritionist for understanding it's just not my thing. 5 am coffee with creamer and scoop of GENEPRO protein 30 G take all my Vitamins except my Calcium Workout 7 am Shakeology shake vanilla with added strawberries 9 am Old fashion oats with blueberries and 1/2 scoop protein 12 pm salad with salmon take calcium chews 3pm Combat Crunch Protein Bar 6pm Taco salad with ground turkey...no shell 8 pm Skinny pop snack Once your at goal you need to find what works for you. I keep my weight within a 4 lb range. Good luck- LA

    Scared out of my mind

@@haleymarie - what does your diet consist of? My liquid diet includes Soups, broth, yogurt, Jello, shakes, unlimited steamed or raw vegetables (NO DRESSING OR SAUCES) and skim milk. Yesterday, I reinterpreted the diet to include thinned out sugar free pudding. :-) I added something called GENEPRO medical grade Protein. It has 30 grams of protein in one tablespoon. It is odorless and tasteless and didn't even change the consistency of the pudding. I have been having a very difficult time getting down the shakes so wasn't taking in enough protein or calories and this is helping me tremendously. Thanks to this Protein powder, I met my calorie/protein requirements yesterday and I did not feel exhausted and nauseous. Now I am sure some experienced VSGers will tell you 100 reasons why this protein powder isn't "good enough" or "preferred" but right now, I have to get thru this and if a 60 calorie cup of thinned out protein 2x a day is getting in my protein requirements, I'm just peachy with it!

    Unjury vs Genepro (unflavored)

    I want to try genepro

    April 26th is coming quickly

Buy genepro also. I put that into everything! 30g per scoop and the scoop is small! Doesn't change the taste or thickness. Nothing. Just adds protein! Wala! The cream of mushroom sounds good. Maybe it was the milk. I've heard we can become lactose intolerant after this. I'm hoping not. Maybe you just weren't ready for it. Wait a couple days and try again. Maybe not as much. 1/4 cup this time and wait. I still have trapped gas. It's like will it ever end! I finally went to the bathroom today and that helped at the time but I feel no different now. I'm back to being crampy and gassy. I too use the gas strips and also the chewy tabs. Not working yet. So you understand the herniated feeling. It's horrible. I have 7 just in my lower back! I'm always in pain. Yes I am hoping big time that taking the weight off will help all of this including my fractured foot as well! Fingers crossed. I started seeing my doctor in October. I didn't lose much but like 6 pounds. But good I didn't gain! They put me through so many tests! I stated off at 201 and am now down to 185. I was 191 presurgical. I'm already losing plus I lost what I gained in there. I'd like to get to around 135. I'm only 5' and all of my weight is in my lower half so my ass is huge and so are my legs!

    Unjury vs Genepro?

I do use GENEPRO.......and like Franks Red hot......."I put that **** on everything". It seems to be the most tasteless and dissolves the best with the least or no clumps. Oh, and here is a tidbit on human nature. Given time, we have the ability to adapt to almost anything. Over the last couple of years, I have used various Protein drinks and for the life of me I can't understand WHY, in this day and age they can't make the stuff taste better. It's all horrible. B-u-t........The few that i have settled on using......well .....let's just say that continuing to consume them over & over & over & over & over .....(you get the idea) they do grauually get more bearable. Some I even look forward to .......Ok see, I went too far there. I had you till I said "look forward". Anyway.....just grin a bear it .....visualize starving on "Naked and Afraid" and the alternative is a bug

    Unjury vs Genepro?

Thanks all. I'm mostly concerned about which has the better taste, or actually which is the most tasteless. My NUT recommends either and several people from my program have used GENEPRO with good bloodwork results. I really like the unjury chocolate flavors. They seem to have the thin consistency that I prefer. I was mostly put off by the quantity of the unflavored Unjury that I needed to blend in.

    Unjury vs Genepro?

GENEPRO.....Unjury.....blah blah blah......Genepro's Protein numbers are based on it's better absorption rate over other protein formulas. That is why they tout more protein per gram. Not being an actual chemists, and knowing how our entire consumer product industry is nothing more than a bunch of snake oil pushers anyway......... I don't really know what is actually being absorbed by my body, by anything out there. Maybe nothing. But then again.....there is always that "placebo" guy that enters the fracas. So it is what it is. I use whatever seems to make me feel or function better. The more expensive it is....the more I NEED to accept in my tiny little mind it's working. So, that being said. Use whatever seems to work for you. And keep our economy strong.

    Unjury vs Genepro?

The Genepro stuff will work just fine for "normal" non-WLS people who are already getting their maintenance level of protein from their diet (even the typical American crap diet is usually adequate on protein!) and doesn't mind making expensive urine.

    Unjury vs Genepro?

I use Genepro and my nutritionist has signed off on it having had other patients use it and their blood work is fine. There are explanations as to how they shrink the protein molecule using electrophoresis etc. All sciencey stuff, without it I would not even come close to my required protein. As for the claim that it is tasteless, that's BS! it's not too bad and definitely not as strong as Unjury, but you can tell it's in there. I mix one scoop with 1.5oz of cream of wheat, oatmeal or get a bigger bang for you buck mixing it with yogurt. As I'm sure you know, once you're post op you will not be able to drink or eat large quantities so whatever you can comfortably hold is going to be affected by how much protein powder you have to mix in. Maybe your nutritionist has some ideas or opinions one way or another about Genepro.

    Unjury vs Genepro?

I don't trust GENEPRO -- I am not sure what kind of alternate universe they live in where 15 grams of powder can give you 30 grams of Protein. A gram is a measure of weight. In the universe I live in, Isaac Newton helped us understand things like basic laws of gravity where you can't get 30 grams of anything from 15 grams of powder. The whole company seems like a scam. Look at the other stuff they sell. "Male enhancement" supplements etc. I think it's the modern day equivalent of the traveling snake oil salesman. So, long story short, my preference is for unjury because I trust them!
  24. Which do you prefer post-surgery? I'm still pre surgery going in on May 10. I've been test driving some different Protein powders and while I don't want to overly stock up in case my tastes change I know I need to have something on hand. I tried unjury today in some chicken broth and found it to be totally fine. It made the broth a little creamy tasting which took some getting used to but I definitely didn't find it to be offensive. However, there was a lot of powder to stir into my two cups of broth (I was using a pre measured packet). The GENEPRO is appealing because of the smaller quantity and the high amount of protein. If you've tried both can you tell me how they compare in terms of taste? I have a small supply of flavored Protein drinks that I've sampled and liked. I'm looking for suggestions on unflavored to mix with broth or juice. Thanks.
