Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

@GreenTealael Have you considered stopping your cycle altogether? Either through stacking oral bc, or a hormonal IUD, or depo (which I wouldn't recommend)?
  2. Dang. I was so excited about it and the benefits of it...especially to skin. Then I got to the "estrogenic effects" part which totally fucks me for hormone positive bc. Because of the AI I'm on, I have to keep the load down.

    Sleeved 3/18/19... horrible pain

All great tips!!! I was told gas x wouldn’t work bc it’s not gas in the intestines.. I also realized that my fluids were just sitting on my chest. I called my doc & they said ice chips & popsicles to ensure I don’t dehydrate 😊 Slow & steady wins the race!!! 💪🏻
  4. So, my sleeve surgery went great! Little to no anxiety which is great... however, the pains from bloating and the ‘gas’ hurt so bad!!! Fever of 100.7 F so very low grade. Fluids are hard to get down bc of the extra full feeling I have from gas bubbles. I’ve walked, doing deep breaths, patted myself on the chest as if I was burping a baby... any other tricks and tips for getting rid of the gas stuff???
  5. Welcome Kayla, I think you are the 1st Newfoundlander, only seen 1 from the Maitimes and think she was in New Brunswick.I believe there are a couple from Ontario and a couple from Alberta, both our BC have had their surgeries and have disappeared. I wish I knew for sure Mrs Ganges from Red Deer Alberta had hers, she was about 3/4 of the way through 2 years. At least you guys do have provincial healthcare even if it does move slowly, ours in the USA seems to be quicker but the insurance carriers can be a pain. Me I was lucky to have mine covered by Medicare/Medicaid, I'm almost as old as dirt but getting it done at 72, 73 now, not many do someone my age. But I kept on until I had mine last September 5th, 3 years, 3 weeks after I started, quite a story there but it's more than worth it! Down over 100 pounds from my High Weight, 70 or so since surgery and I am finally undergrowing my clothes! I can't hardly believe it at times. So if I can help you with anything just ask! There is a lot of good advice on here! I still am learning myself at times.

    I lied

I’ve not been secretive. Maybe I’m just at an age where I don’t care what people think of me? In fact, today, while conversing with someone who dibsed a bag of clothes I have shrunk out of, I mentioned that I’m about ready to have bariatric surgery, so there will be more clothes if she wants them. I have a great wardrobe and I want it to be able to be enjoyed. Anyway, she said that she’s lost 100 lbs so far, but is going the way of diet and exercise rather than surgery - as if diet and exercise isn’t a major part of losing with wls. I could have been offended, but instead just said that I’ve decided to add this extra tool with the diet and exercise that I’m employing. She clearly was just ignorant. Chances are that she will regain, like I have previously and the vast majority of people who lose without surgery do. I hope she succeeds, but the odds aren’t in her favor. I refuse to pretend that the statistics are less grim than they are. That’s not a myth that I’m going to propagate. However, I’m emotionally in a place where someone saying I’m taking the easy way doesn’t bother me. They don’t have a clue what they are talking about. 15 years ago it would have had an emotional impact, but not now. This whole wls surgery stuff is tough enough without having to deal with other people’s ignorant bs. I totally respect those who choose not to by keeping it to themselves.
  7. Check your potassium. I was in the ER yesterday with all the same things, plus high bp, high bs and a fever. I'm severely low and was barely having any energy for 4 days. I think the diarrhea caused all my problems. Good luck feeling better!

    I'm not doing well

I'm almost 3 weeks out and these last 4 days have been hell. I'm ok where meeting my protein goals. Water is definitely #1 and I drank 2 small V8's to help with electrolytes. My friend also suggest smart water, so doing that too. Dr says my sugar is going high to compensate for the low potassium. Good news, my bs is only 178 tonight as I'm getting ready for bed, so hopefully that means my potassium is coming back up. 4 days practically in bed all day=no fun. Granddaughter came to visit and set up all her dolls on my nightstand,so we could play. Gotta love her for being creative. Lol
  9. gabybab

    I'm not doing well

I went to the ER, because I developed a 101.8 fever. My bp was over 200 and my bs was high 200's. The diahreah caused low potassium and they said was causing my bs to be so high. I had an infusion and a bag of saline. I'm home and still feel weak, but hopefully soon I will get over this bump in the road.
  10. Well I wasn't more than slightly anemic before mine last September 5th, I had some troubles with my healing, developed a stomal stricture, jejunenal ulcers, don't worry about these, I am a rare bird, most RnY do not have these bad occurrences, anyway I had to have a PICC line installed on November 29th so I could let my gastrointestinal system heal, I was being fed supplementally through my vein in my upper left arm, it really sounds more scary than it was, don't laugh but I got used to the TPN, I kind of miss it. But I am doing pretty good back eating again, my weight loss has started up again and that's good! At any rate I wanted to tell you I have been faithful with my meds, then they told me after one of my blood draws, when you're on TPN you get them every week, that my. iron levels were low so they added another iron 💊, well it strangely did not digest in or something because I did have an iron INFUSION last Monday the 11th. It really isn't that bad a thing, mostly like a long- timed IV. Let me run you through it, showed up at the INFUSION center, got weighed and other vitals done, an IV put in, the needle was what I Call an airplane needle had like a flattened wing to lay against your skin. These were done in the lab, then we walked to like a special suite, this was in a tower so the rooms/cubicles are pie shaped. Started an IV of Saline, let that run in maybe a half- hour, things were going good so they piggy backed in a small bag of solution, watched me close to make sure I didn't have any weird reactions, I had a comfy recliner to sit in, all the warm blankets I could desire, must have been stellar because they let bage # 1 finish draining in, then gave me Steroid, 2 Benadryl and 2 Tylenol, started a new big bag, made sure it was flowing well then brought in the Big Bad Infusion to add in, a clear golden in color, knew what was going to happen - Benadryl kicks my tushie bad, so I drifted in and out of sleep, but no strange taste in my mouth, no hives, no headache, no feeling flushed, nausea or anything thing else. Whole thing started 8:30-9AM, done by 2:30pm, and I was treated very fine, if I need another in 3 months, I wouldn't mind going there again. If I hadn't been doing weekly bloods they might not known as quick as they did, because I didn't look pale or anything to the average person. I do feel better, not as short of breath so I guess it did me some good!😝

    Solid food progression

This is totally normal for where you are in the evolution. I too get hungrier when I add in too much fruit. I can do about an ounce or two of berries or a green tart apple with peel a day without increased hunger. One thing my RD told me which works great for me - still at 13months out is that fill pouch with protein at meals. But you can plan mini meals that have mostly veg! In the early days that helped me. Early On: Breakfast: Protein shake (or green smoothie with protein powder + frozen spinach + blueberries + psyllium + unsw. cash milk) = 30g of protein MS: red bell pepper, celery or cucumbers or carrots and a yogurt ranch sauce Lunch: 2-3oz protein: roll up with meat/cheese + 1oz of some raw veg (cucumber, carrots, celery, grape tomatoes, avocado) AS: Mixed green salad like Rick outlines + feta cheese + pumpkin or sunflower seeds or walnuts/almonds/pecans Dinner: 2-3oz protein (grilled or pan sauteed) + 1oz cooked veggies + 1oz avocado/tomato BS: 1/2oz almonds + 1oz Granny Smith Apple NOW at 13months: I try not to snack, but do schedule a bedtime JIC snack. And if I'm hungry through the day, then the ONLY thing I get is 1 hard boiled egg OR raw veggies with yogurt Ranch dip Breakfast: I still alternate green smoothies with eating egg puffs with spinach and mushrooms Lunch: Salad with 2oz protein or Green Soup with bone broth and veggies + 2oz protein Dinner: 3-4oz protein + 1-2oz cooked veggie + 1oz avocado/tomato BS: 1/2oz almonds + 1oz Granny Smith Apple OR 1 GG brancrisp + 1-2tbsp almond butter

    Disappointed

So, I was told by both my endocrinologist & my surgeon Dr to stop my diabetes meds. I was on metformin 2x 1000mg, glimeperide 2x 4mg and 72 units of lantus at night. I'm 16 days out and my bs is over 200 fasting and after meals. I've gone back to taking metformin & glimeperide till I hear from my Dr. I am eating real food now, but it was high even on just liquids. I'm eating about 1/2 cup of food x4 a day. Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you!
  13. I have so many emotions right now: excited (2 more days! I got all 1.5 wks of planning done!), nervous ( bcs, duh), exhausted (liquid diet, long LONG few days trying to prep for last minute surgery), annoyed (how many times do I have to tell my co-workers I'm going on a leave starting Wednesday?? Stop sending me meeting requests!), and amused (my hubs just deadpanned, "So, since Friday you've lost 8 pounds. You should just stick to this 1000 calorie diet and slip the surgery."). Mostly, I'm sleepy. And really happy I got a last minute date and didn't have to do 2 weeks of full liquids while dealing with middle schoolers... Friday-Tuesday was enough. I bolted out of school today to make it to my PCP for pre-op testing. Had my first EKG (it was normal) and lost probably a quart of blood. Then got completely lost trying to find the imaging center for my x-rays [emoji23] [emoji23] . Tomorrow, I have my hospital blood typing + paperwork fun times and then my second visit with the surgeon. Oh, and I get to start my clear liquid diet and potassium supplements. Thursday, I refuse to leave my home! I'm going to sit, read a book, and pet my dog. This week has been A. Freaking. Whirlwind. #2moredays Sent from my LG-G710 using BariatricPal mobile app

    2 week stall

Sorry you're running into the same problem. Unfortunately, things have not gotten any better. Tomorrow I will 8 weeks out and aside from the initial 15lbs in the 1st week, I've only lost about 5 lbs, which to me is total BS! I'm doing everything I need to yet not losing any weight. It's really frustrating.

    Grapefruit

I know I'm not getting anywhere near my protein goal. Couldn't eat/finish the single egg I made this morning. I'm on the full food stage at this point. I think so much of my problem is that a lot of things "taste' different now. Can't touch cottage cheese, used to love it. Eggs, used to love eggs, now it's a challenge to get one down and keep it there. So my protein comes from the meats I can get to stay down. Mostly chicken. A bite of tuna here and there, a piece of fish on rare occasions and once in a while some hamburger, but very little. Everything tastes discusting. Everything. Except the grapefruit. Surgery was Dec 19th and I have lost about 40-45 lbs. I don't weigh every day. Water is a challenge due to work restrictions. I get a couple good sips before I leave the locker room, a couple during a quick potty break but that's about it. You're not supposed to eat and drink at the same time, so lunch is usually dry. I'd have to do the shakes before work, don't want to do it after bc then I'd be going to bed within a half hour with all of that in the tummy. I know I need to add some variety to my diet, but it's a slow process as I test each new addition to see if it will be tolerated. As far as going back to my Dr., it won't be until June before they'll see me again. Damn little support from their office. A 2 week post op visit, a 6 month post op visit and a year post op visit then maybe yearly. In between, nada. I cannot make the monthly "support classes" bc they are at night when I work. So I have this forum and while 99% of the feedback has been very supportive and positive I have had (in the past on previous posts) a couple of replies that were sharp and criticizing as if I was a complete idiot. What a shame too because as you do research, you can see that even the DOCTORS and NURSES disagree about many things surrounding the weight loss surgery. Just because you have had something work or not work for you doesn't mean it is the same for everyone and so I am truly on my own in this adventure and of course learning some things the hard way. I appreciate being able to touch base on this forum and see if I'm still in bounds or not. I am thankful for everyone that continues to offer support and encouragement, kind and lifting words as I bump along and hit the walls from time to time.

    ❤MARCH 2019 CHALLENGE❤

March 8,9,10 &11: One annoying habit I would like to break is reading 15267477948473383384 books at the same time. Its just that there are sooo many good ones and life seems so short so I want to read as much as I can while I can Advice I'd give myself a year ago today is enjoy that trip thoroughly. Stop whining about the frigid weather, buy another scarf and socks, keep walking. I'm good at recognizing my own bs and calling myself on it. I really like my shoulders at the moment because everything else is trying to hurt my feelings... Lol plastics here I come 😂

    Grapefruit

There are so many things I'm finding that I can't eat, usually bc it comes back up within minutes. However, grapefruit I can eat plenty of. Have to have it daily. I take a multivitamin that was recommended by my Dr. , but I'm wondering if this craving for grapefruit indicates some kind of shortcoming in my vitamins. I'm also worried that too much grapefruit might not be a good thing for me. This isn't sweetened grapefruit, just all natural. Aside from the multivitamin, I'm not on any other meds so there's no chance of a drug interaction/contraindication bc of the grapefruit. I can eat about 4 things- cereal, grapefruit, soup and chicken.
  18. I have very similar stats to yours. Started at 232. Had lap band 7 years ago. Got down to 142 and now struggling with regain. I have had pain and nausea that I never used to have and also am considering sleeve suggested by my Bariatric group. Unfortunately bc my BMI is 27 insurance won’t pay for sleeve. Dr will do revision at no charge but will have to pay for hospital fees which no one can give me an answer to cost. I too never considered having what I considered a drastic surgery like the sleeve but yo continue gaining would be devastating for me. My health has been so much better since the band I don’t know what to do. I have an appt to discuss my options and also have a swallow X-ray done. Good luck to you. Hope we can figure this out!

    Birth Control??

I stayed on BC but the stress on my body was so bad I got my period the night of surgery. Asking the nurse to change my gigantic pad on mesh undies was a real experience. It sucked having to deal with pads and the incision pain but I did it.
  20. The BMI chart is outdated and not a good measure of whether or not you’re healthy. I dropped down to wearing a size 6 and was still “overweight”. It’s BS
  21. 5ft 8 in, size 12 feet, as I lose weight feet are narrowing but getting shorter? Don't think so, some people say they do, IDK about that. Highest W 365+ , surgery weight 319 on September 5th 2018, current W 242 at 6 months, my dream goal/ size is 175 Or Size 15 Junior and that would still be on cusp of overweight/ obese by BMI standards, I will be truly grateful to be below 200 pounds, maybe 195? Spent too many years hating the Frustr8 I was, I will be grateful for what I. CAN ACHEIVE st 73 years old. The last time I was at 195 and yes, it has been years ago, although I looked a large/average it wasn't that, bad for me. I gave up on looking like TinkerBelle and Peter Pan long ago. At 195 I had good defination of my body parts, no snide little kid came up to me and asked " Are you a Lady or Fat?" wanted to tell him to go play in traffic or worse, but after I reach 195 I still want to lose those last 20 pounds it will be my choice, not some arbitrary size someone else set up, and being in control, oh THAT means the world to me. Too much of my life was spent conforming to others standards, not talking back, believing the line Nobody could like me for me, I was just an extention of family members, someone's daughter, wife, mother and that should be my goal in life. Why did I believe that stack of hooey? I was raised to be sunservient, a husband . was my only goal, once you got one, no matter the model, you never let them go, if you were emotionally or even physically battered, you sucked it up for the greater good, as long as bones weren't broken, you wore long sleeves, covered bruises with make up , you were female, it was all you deserved. Someone on here accused me of desiring martyrdoom, nope, I just didn't realize there was another way to live. And if someone on TV was also battered I was told " See you're not so bad off, you're warm and fed! Yeah and food was my friend and comfort when nothing and no one else was. It was far easier to become a widow than to get a divorce from food! But I am stronger, albeit older, braver, I can and will stand up in a diminishing size body, and it is my choice finally not somebody elses, and Surprise Surprise most people like ME for ME, not somebody's extention , Frustr8 is really cool on her own , those who don't, well I wish them well on their own journey and trials for like Popeye I Yam what I Yam and it more than suffices in my World!👉😝👈

    Birth Control??

I refused to go off. I need to stay on the pill. It’s to prevent DVT. I just made sure to walk a lot to prevent clots. It also depends on your weight. I think the higher it is the more likely you should go off BC temporarily. I believe I’ve also read it can be less effective short term after surgery but don’t quote me on that. I’m currently not sexually active 🤦🏼‍♀️ so it was never a concern.

    What just happened?

I had a similar incident a couple of weeks ago with a single poached egg with a bit of hollandaise sauce on it. Long story short, I was traveling out of town for a wedding, was only 17 days post-op, and we were on a tight time schedule. The only fast Breakfast option was hotel dining room and I thought I’d be okay eating one of my husbands eggs Benedict (I really did scrape off most of the sauce). Ate 3/4 of the egg (the waiter just could NOT understand that I was needing to take my slow time eating and tried to take my plate away TWICE in a 10 minute period of time so I rushed eating it so the man would leave me alone and stop hovering over my pitiful half egg.)Who knows...maybe he was pissed I didn’t order anything and was annoyed I grabbed a saucer and took one of hubs eggs. Anyway, by the time I walked back to the hotel room, I was in terrible agony. I had eaten eggs twice before and tolerated them just fine.... except before I’d had the luxury of taking my time and they didn’t have sauce in them. It subsided in about an hour- which was a blessing bc we had to be dressed and in the lobby within 2 hours of that breakfast- but for that hour I was scared to death that I had flown halfway across the country and spent thousands of dollars only to miss the whole thing sitting in agony in my hotel room. Since then I’ve eaten eggs again with zero problems, but the takeaway is that if I don’t have time, I just skip the meal and not stress too much about getting my Protein in rather than be sick sick sick and hurting It’s going to all be a learning process and you’re gonna do just fine.

I haven't told anyone about my surgery

I didn’t tell anyone either. Told them I was having my gallbladder out (which was true) and that I needed to change my diet afterward bc there were foods I couldn’t tolerate anymore. Also, that I was seeing a nutritionist (also true) I don’t feel bad about “lying” it’s my business
