    ALL OF A SUDDEN!!!!!

I experience similar issues. I will eat a healthy 300-350 cal breakfast about 8:30 and by 11 I feel hungry, by 11:30...very hungry. I was at 5.5 but had to get an unfill b/c my healthy protein (meats) were getting stuck and began eating the slider foods which caused me some weight gain. I am probably going to make an appt to discuss this and see what they say. Really confused. I am thinking maybe I am eating too fast at times, but it is always the chicken and turkey that gets stuck.!@#$%. Anyone else????

    Here I grow Again

Aaron I am just here to encourage you. Consistency is always the challenge. Having to push through pain to exercise is no joke. Can your primary care giver help with that? What I like about what you have said is that you are not in a defeats mindset. You see where the challenge has been and acknowledge it. I can hear your will and desire to get back on track. I am positive there are those like you who have faced weight gain after WLS but have reversed it and you are not giving up. Often we have to be our own best coach and not rely on others who do not understand or appreciate the battle with obesity - sadly even a spouse. Kudos to you for pushing through and remaining positive in spite of having so many balls to keep in the air with kids, studying, marriage, botched skin removal surgery and weight management. Nuff respect to you. seriously.

Checking In- Sleeved in Dec 2014

I had the VSG in August of 2015, reached my initial goal precisely one year later, and then maintained that for a year. I was very active traveling last summer and through the fall, and in December 2017 I hit the lowest weight I've been since the 8th grade. I was overjoyed. This year I've gained 11 pounds. It's been very frustrating and was bewildering at first. I take Metformin for PCOS and Wellbutrin due to depression regarding fertility issues, and both medications typically cause weight loss. Both can actually cause weight gain, though. I hadn't realized that when my endocrinologist increased my Metformin dosage in January. I soon became frequently ravenous, with a tremendous surge in appetite and shakiness coming on rapidly. I thought I needed to just acclimate to the medicine and so I stuck with it, but the hunger and shaking haven't abated. When I saw him again in April and mentioned the weight gain and hunger, he was nonchalant, absolutely unsurprised by it, saying that it can cause hypoglycemia and excessive hunger. He also said that Wellbutrin can cause weight gain in some people. Yet, when I asked him about both medications prior to taking them he said that I wouldn't gain weight, so..... He didn't seem to think the weight gain was a reason to be concerned because I'm still at a healthy BMI, but for me it's worrisome because it can escalate. I don't want to stop either medication because they have been helpful in other regards. I would definitely encourage anyone who is experiencing weight gain to not make the mistake I did by failing to properly and thoroughly read about all side effects of medications. Reading patient reviews carefully has also been helpful.
  4. Mine fit my thumb now!! I'm going to wait til I get to goal to get them resized. I had to resize them because of my weight gain, so I will probably have to get the stones reset instead!!! KInda cool thought, a new band for a new me!!!! ~cheri
  5. I had my lap band put in on June 12 th. It was a long process. I finally decided to pursue it after being rejected by a fertility clinic due to my weight which at the time was around 150 and because I was 40. I started going through the process of getting the surgery authorized when I decided to get a second opinion from another fertility clinic. They were willing to work with us. I am using my younger sister's eggs. Thank you sister! Any way because I was fearful of failure of either procedure failing I went through the process of both without informing one of the other until I knew for sure. I had to go through several appeals and hoops to get the lap band approved and as luck would have it they both were coming to fruition in June. So it was time for disclosure and Decisions. I went first to the lapband team at park nicollet in mn. I had had a very brief conversation with a nutritionist ptior to my second opinion and eas somewhat hopeful. The response from the surgeon once ascertaining my reasonings for waiting was that life is complicated, that the main concerns with bariatric and pregnancy is directed at nutrition. My surgeon noted minimal nutritional issues with the band, that the females bodies put needed nutrition to the baby first, and that people in poverty have healthy births. also noted was the majority of healthy births to women with lap bands. It was also pointed out that with the band that less weight gain during pregnancy the healthier. The fertility doc didn't care as long as the surgeon stayed away from my pelvic area. So. Surgery was completed and I am feeling geat and in about 7 days I will ( hopefully) have my Ivf implantation. I wanted to share my story to give a different experience or prompt new conversations with your treatment team. I wish you the best. Sorry for the length of this. I just ran across this site and was so excited.
  6. I went to my Dr for my 1st appointment about a month ago. But I do my grocery shopping once a month and had already done my shopping for the month. (My appointment was a last minute appointment because there was a cancelation) So the Dr said it would be ok to do Weight Watchers for a couple weeks then to start on the Medifast Lean and Green diet. Well I didnt lose any weight on the Weight Watchers, because of the medicine my primary Dr had me on (which had a side effect of weight gain) I am no longer on that medicine, it caused me to gain 3 pounds. Anyways, I started the Lean and Green diet on Monday. I hate it. Most of the foods I am allowed, I dont like. I am just so hungry all the time. When I go to the Dr on the 22nd I plan on getting the Medifast shakes which from what I hear, will fill me up for a few hours. I am started to get cranky and I am just so miserable. I cant make this feeling of hunger go away. And to top it off, my husband comes home with pizza for himself for lunch! Now I know he has every right to eat whatever he wants but did he have to eat it right in front of me?! I dont know if all Dr's have you do the same pre surgery diet, but if any of you did this lean and green, please tell me what to do to make myself feel full. I am so scared that I am just gonna get to the point where I am so hungry and I am gonna pig out. Thanks for any advice.

Pros vs Cons of emptying band

I had my band emptied about a month before my surgery. This was purely my choice as they did tell me that I didnt necessarily have to have the band emptied before I had the surgery. I simply wanted not to be uncomfortable for the time before my surgery. I also wanted to enjoy some things I knew I wouldnt be able to eat once I am sleeved like bagels and sandwiches. I have gained about 5lbs and am not to concerned about weight gain. Surgery is in 3.5 weeks.

    Lost Friends?????

I have lost every single one of my friends due to my weight gain. So for me this is a chance to make new friends. I'm sorry your friend isn't talking to you. Maybe try to get her to go to a seminar and consider the surgery for herself?

    Bypass patients Beware

Yes it does, but from the research I've done that's because the shot makes your body think you're pregnant, and the main weight gain is from food cravings and eating. Which will be minimal post op anyway. Also the average weight gain is only about 12 pounds. Unfortunately I don't have many other options, unless the BF wants to get snipped LOL

Will I Ever Enjoy Eating Again?

I feel 100% normal and I enjoy food everyday!! I feel in control cause I cannot eat big portions-- I do however eat reasonable portions and what ever I want! I can eat a 6in sub from subway with just the bottom bread for example. or 1 small slice of pizza and a buffalo wing. Perfect, no pain, no nausea, no weight gain!

Why is this ALL I'm thinking about now!?

Congratulations @@feelinggood! Your not alone, I so cried when my surgeon was speaking to me right before they wheeled me into the or. I have been speaking to numerous people who've gone thru either sleeve or bypass and the concensus is this: initially we are making these crazy drastic changes. Doing so much good for our body. Getting it healthy so we can correct our initial mistakes of more than likely overindulgence. When we reach our points of what makes us feel great, energetic, beautiful or handsome we can then introduce in extreme modification those little thimgs we once enjoyed. I've began to understand carbonation will absolutely ruin your ability to completely maintain as it is a main trigger for weight gain bc it slowly allows you to stretch your pouch and not allow you to feel the restriction of maybe one or two Hershey's kisses and suddenly you've had twelve... I love sprite. It's absolutely delish to me, but when I began this journey I said if I want this bad enough this is what will ruin me and set me up to fail so I can give you up! I'm glad your doing well. Three weeks out is great. I imagine you still on your moist, soft proteins, you can't go eat everything right?
  13. A VSG procedure results in reducing the capacity of your stomach. That's it. That's all it does. I have NEVER read of a true "failed" sleeve. Stalls are normal. Failing to meet goal is not uncommon. Gaining all your weight back can happen. But NONE of these so called failures are the result of your sleeve not doing what it's supposed to do. "failures" are thpically the result of poor choices, unrealistic expectations, certain medications that cause weight gain, and/or other medical conditions. However, if you can eat 4-6 cups of food in one sitting, then yes, you have a failed sleeve. And, like cowgirljane mentioned, you can't possibly declare weight loss success or failure until you are at the very least a year or two out. And true success is really never reached....you not failing your sleeve is a challenge to be met every day for the rest of your life.

    Ongoing Lessons

I just had to ring in and share some lessons I've been learning throughout my short journey so far (Banded April 28th) I know and am open to learning more but wanted to share in the hopes of helping others in their journeys through lap-band-land. Things I've learned: 1) I don't blame my lack of weight loss on my band, it cannot force me to exercise or eat the right things. 2) I don't give all the credit of my current weight loss to my band either, I still have to monitor my calories and nutrients to continue to lose. 3) My skin will sag if I don't do weight bearing exercises to offset this, and in areas where my fat is concentrated (for me its my INNER thighs...) I will still have some residual sagging skin. 4) Unless I get a boob job, my breasts will sag and never be 'perky' again...this is meaningful to me, to others its not, and I respect that. 5) If I PB, I don't curse the band, I curse myself. 6) I love my band, I love the choice I made, some days are better than others, I accept that and I do not dwell on the bad (even though its hard sometimes) 7) I am learning everyday about things I can and cannot eat. I can eat things others that are banded can't just as others can eat things I cant. 8) I get my fills when I need to, i.e. if I'm not losing, I don't go on a timed schedule. 9) I've had a bad fill experience (overfilled) I had some taken out and have been fine every since. I don't blame my fill doc, or myself for not noticing right away, but I learned from the experience. 10) I respect everyones individual journey, I think everyone needs to take responsibility for their own weight gain/loss. IMHO, the lap band has made many unhealthy people healty. Like anything, everyone handles change differently and each person has their own individual expectations. I sincerely admire everyone who is on this journey and respect your choice to change....GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

    Terrified of gaining

I can ditto every word Gail said!! I can understand being terrified of weight gain but it may happen, as it did for me, and I've managed to not go crazy and gain everything back. I lost 65 lbs in a year, and gained 15 back after putting my dog to sleep. I didn't go off the deep end, just made bad choices because I didn't care about anything but my grief. Now I'm back on track and losing again. I'd like to be back where I was at my one year follow up appointment, at my two year in June. Then maybe lose the last ten. No matter what, this surgery was a success for me, and I'm exactly where I need to be. I learned a LOT about myself through all this, especially about why I always turn to food, and am continuing to learn.
  16. Are your weight gains the fault of the band or your fault for not following the program? The band has been successful for some and there are people out there who swear by them (as opposed to swearing AT them). Fix whatever is broken so, if it's the band's fault, then go for the revision. If your eating habits are the problem, then why undergo surgery? Even with the VSG, you have to make it work... it won't do it all by itself. Best of luck on whatever you decide.
  17. I am new to this site. I just received my first order and I was under the impression that everything was going to be "carb friendly", which in fact, most everything has excessive carbs that I could have purchased at any local store. Any recommendations on products that are offered on here that are no high in carbs? I had the gastric sleeve in December of 2017. I have gained 25 pounds back. I don't really get hungry, but my metabolism drops, which in turn, causes me to eat impulsively, which of course, created the weight gain. Trying to figure out a "diet" that will help me meet all my needs and goals. Any advice?

    Anyone have the Mirena?

I *love* my Mirena! After about 5 years of HEAVY periodic bleeding due to peri-menopause, finally found an OBGYN who didn't just pooh pooh my symptoms with "well, everyone's different, yes, things can get heavy or light, you just have to put up with it till it's over..." -- sorry for TMI, but weeks of passing major blood clots, being terrified to even stand up for fear of "flooding", always putting towels underneath me, etc -- ugh, don't want to remember all that -- but got the Mirena about 2 years ago and it literally changed my life - for the better! Don't know how/if it affected weight gain, but at least the **&&^^ bleeding STOPPED.
  19. As stated above, square inch for square inch Muscle weighs more than fat. So as you reduce fat stores and increase muscle mass, you can see weight gains. That's why I've pushed so hard for people to stop tracking weight as a specific number and start looking at the trend. I've tracked weight and body fat my whole process, not really caring about the numbers exactly, but what I was doing and which direction those numbers moved. The more I work out for muscle, my body fat drops and my weight gains. When I focus on cardio, my weight drops, sometimes body fat does as well, but not as fast as when working out for muscle gain. This is because larger muscle mass requires more energy in rest than smaller muscles do, so, bigger muscle mass, larger fuel requirements, faster fat breakdown. Plus, our bodies get used to what's going on and start to level off. Check into Intermittent Fasting if you haven't yet, really get me through some serious stalls.

    Artificial sweeteners

It’s really difficult to avoid all the artificial sweeteners. They seem to be in everything these days. I wanted to reduce or kill any craving for sweet/sugar after surgery. My way of overcoming them was to prepare & cook most of my food myself. It was the only way I could control the ingredients. I don’t use sugar alternatives either. I know there’s sweeteners in the yoghurt & protein bars I buy but that’s really it. I generally avoid sweet things except for naturally occurring sugars like in fruit & I do put a little bit of honey in my rolled oats to help offset the odd hypoglycaemic episodes I can have in the morning (I used to have them occasionally when I was slim in the past too). As soon as I passed the fluid only stage post surgery I never had another protein shake. I made a lot of soup as I went through the post surgery stages. Now if I want something dessert-like I make chia pudding (lactose free milk, chia seeds, vanilla extract). Cooking your own food my be a way for you to not consume the sweeteners you want to avoid. I like to cook so it wasn’t an issue for me. These 6 months will allow you to do lots of research into suitable alternatives. In Australia we don’t have the 6 month pre requisite. I had three weeks between the first appointment with my surgeon & my surgery. This is bit of a thing for me so I apologise if I sound preachy. There’s a lot of interesting research about now about the side effects of sweeteners & the disadvantages. Sure there’s lots of research showing replacing sweeteners with sugar will cause weight loss but of course it will. Going from consuming 100s/1000s of calories in non diet soft drink to 0 calories by drinking diet sodas will result in some weight loss. Dig deep & you will find some research that’s now showing sweeteners can cause weight gain. Good luck.
  21. Greetings everyone, I am a smoker, and I'm thinking about quitting soon. I'm 9 weeks post-op, so I have a long way to go with my weight loss. I'm concerned that: A ) it will be too much of a shock to my already confused body, and B ) that it will halt any further weight loss (or even cause a gain). And while I know the benefits of quitting outweigh any perceived disadvantages, I'm wondering if I should wait until I'm closer to my goal, staying focused on one thing at a time and maximizing this honeymoon period with the sleeve. On the other hand, if the weight loss is easier in these earlier months, maybe that will minimize any potential weight gain from quitting? I have a follow-up with my surgeon on Thursday, so I'm going to ask him, but I'm curious if anyone here has quit smoking in the early (or any) stages of post-op, and what were your results? Be well… D

    Weigh in day of surgery

That is what I'd expect, too. How worried are you ? Let that worry motivate you.....and not just for insurance reasons. Does your surgeon require a pre-op diet of any kind ? Only you know where you stand in terms of BMI, health issues and comorbiities. Only you know the real risks at this point. For me things were fairly straightforward. I was told by the staff of both surgeons that I've dealt with along the way this Summer-Fall that they would delay surgery if they saw weight gains as they believed it's a sign that you aren't ready. The two that I've dealt with were real sticklers about this and each went out of their way to show actual surgical films that show the liver of folks that did the pre-op diet successfully vs folks that didn't . It really hit home when you see them lift up the liver and suspend it out of the way so they can work. I was convinced that I wanted to do whatever I could to allow my liver to get smaller and less prone to damage when lifted. It makes sticking to this short pre-op diet a piece of cake. That footage scared me. I'm not kidding about the difference in patients, either. It was hard for many in our class to watch.....but it was powerful stuff to see. Sh!t got real. I try to keep in mind that the goal is weight loss......before a& after surgery......weight loss. Giving my back, knees a much needed break. Anyway....not trying to be a jerk......just hoping that you'll keep in mind that the insurance guidelines aren't the ones that really matter. There's a compelling reason you are doing this surgery that is unique to you. It's important to you for some specific reason. Tap into satisfying that need and let it drive your behaviors towards positive results. I wish you the best. You can do anything.....anything that your mind gets behind and wants.

    Old habits

As someone who has depression, anxiety and bipolar II I'm wondering why on earth they'd take you off meds like that. I'm assuming you're in a withdrawal state - there are a lot of newer antidepressants that aren't bad with the weight gain. As stated above, a good therapist really helps. I see one every week. But, I'm not surprised you're having a hard time if they took you off meda like that cold turkey. I'd definitely see a psychiatrist and a therapist for help.

    Body Shape After Weight Loss

Ive ALWAYS carried the majority of my weight in my thighs. I think this had a lot to do with my image issues when I was younger. I always felt fat, even when I wasn't. At one point I was so super thin, I would faint and get sick... this is NOT good. My doctor wanted my Mom to send me to a psychiatrist. It was a really weird time for me. I went to a few appointments but never went back. I was able to break out of that terrible cycle but that's when the weight gain began. Then the long story begins... Anyway once I got thinned out right now, I noticed that I was still carrying a whole heckuva lot of fat in my thighs. The terrible thing was looking at my face and upper body made me not want to continue to lose because I was (still am) boney skinny up there. It made me feel really lopsided and un attractive. So that's why I chose to have the liposuction procedure performed. I knew I couldn't keep trying to lose weight anymore. I was able to put on some very small sized pants but they would always fit really weird. Really tight in the knees and thighs but loose around the waist. My lipos were the only way I was able to fix this problem. NOT to say you will have to go through this too! I'm just sharing my personal experience. Good luck!!! Everyone loses differently. It is my hope that you will lose evenly. Merry Christmas!
