  1. Hi there so any ideas on what I can do to lose more weight? I had surgery may 15th and only have lost 7 pounds! And I was 283 pounds so I weight a lot! People who had their sleeve the same day have lost 14-26 pounds and I'm at 7!

    Mental Help

What helped me mentally prepare was to read VST and similar as much as possible. I read as many people's experiences as I could to help me gain perspective on what this journey is all about. It helped me also in that nothing that has happened to me so far has really been a surprise. Yes no two peoples experiences are exactly the same, but when you have been exposed to all the different possibilities beforehand, it gives you a chance to consider things before you're right in the middle of it. In some ways that has helped me shape my experience too. So my advice is to read read read as many blogs and msg board entries as you can!
  3. Hi all, anyone know if the weight loss, of lack thereof, prior to surgery has anything to do with or w/o the gas and shoulder pain I'm reading about? (i.e., more room more gas more pain, vs. more "room", and therefore less gas needed to forcefully inflate the abdominal area...)
  4. Hiya all, sorry i have not been around lately, been moving home and various other things, just thought i would give you an update, my surgery was 1st of Feb 2011, and i have now lost the grand total of 6 stone, (about 80lbs), as you can imagine i am really pleased, at first i was pretty doubtful that the surgery would work, after all when has anything 'really' worked?? but i can honestly say i am so pleased with the results so far, i have another stone to lose until i reach my first goal, but then another 4-5 stone to go after that to reach my final goal, i have found that i can eat most things, apart from lettuce, never ever eating that again!! Pizza is not good for me either, pasta is ok but i get full very quickly, i've had only a few bad moments, mainly when i have tried to eat more than my stomache will allow, or drinking and eating at the same time, anyway hope everyone is doing great viv

    Need Advice...

Hi, loving life, I'm from the Springfield area, and to be completely honest, I didn't have any luck finding anyone in SW Missouri that even offered the surgery. The medical community in this area seems to behind the times, still pushing RNY. I would recommend checking the Tulsa, KC, or Bentonville areas. And to be completely straight, yes, it is very likely that your breast will be affected by the weight loss, a good chance hat at 5'0" your weight loss won't stop at 150#, there are several ladies here in this site that are below their goal weights. Not saying that you can't stop the weight loss but if you follow through with the lifestyle change that comes with this surgery, your body will fid a place where it is comfortable.

  7. Hi I'm new to the group I'm happy I found a group that I can share wat I'm going thu . I got my surgery 11 months ago I only lost 60 pounds n my weight is still has not gone done.
  8. Okay so I have Aetna insurance and I am doing the three month program. I am currently on month 2 (about to be on month 3). In November (first month) my nutritionist weighed me in at 270lbs. I have also been seeing an exercise therapist that also weighs me and in November she weighed me in at 271lbs. At the very beginning of December my exercise therapist weighed me in at 271lbs. I just had my second nutritionist appointment today 12-22-10 and she weighed me in at 280lbs! I've gained 9lbs in December! Yes, I am definitely going to blame it on the holidays. I have been to SO many Christmas parties and it's just hard. Now, I know I can lose that 9lbs by my next and final nutritionist appointment which will be in January. However, I am just a little worried that my insurance company (aetna) will see that 9lbs weight gain and deny me. I mean, I AM going to lose it by my next nutritionist visit and be at my original 270lbs. I am just worried about insurance. So my question is, has anyone gained weight during their weight-loss program but then lost it to be back down to their original level and still got approved? Thanks!
  9. I have been told by multiple people (friends, family and coworkers) that I am getting slim and shouldn't lose much more weight (like maybe 20 more lbs max). I'm at 197 right now and want to hit 130 (and this is my max, I ideally want to get smaller). I'm not even 5 feet tall but a number of people have said that I shouldn't want to lose my "thickness". I don't get it. I can't wrap my head around this obsession with "thickness". At 130 I'd still be considered overweight. I don't even like the way I look right now so it boggles my mind to have people say that I look good this way. Has anyone else experienced this?
  10. I don't have wifi at home, so I will be in and out sporadically. I am just starting my journey...well the journey to get healthy. The journey to my 289 lb. self started 20 years ago. A lot of factors. I am thinking about gastric bypass as the amount to my goal is so great. (149 lbs) I also tend to lean toward sugar and with this procedure your body reacts in a not so positive manner which I'm hoping that will help me make better choices. I am going to the weight loss information meeting tomorrow (May 1st) and then there is a support group they want you to go to that evening. After that I guess I make an appointment with the surgeon. I have sleep apnea (untreated as I can't seem to keep the mask on), high blood pressure, depression, my knees hurt, I have no energy and just feel like crap most days.

    Body Bugg or Body Media?

I have the Bodymedia Fit. They also make the Bodybugg. As I understand it, the major difference is the Bodymedia Fit masures your sleep quality, where the Bodybugg doesn't. I don't find the sleep info all that important to me (and I can't change what it reads anyway) so I'd say get whichever is cheaper. BestBuy had the Fit on sale for $30 off recently. I wear mine all the time, and swear by it. I haven't measured a thing, and I use the armband to keep track of ALL the day's activity and calories for me. The pedometer built in measures things multiple ways - it's more than just a step counter. It makes this whole weight loss thing SO easy. I can't say enough good things about it, or recommend it more highly. It's worth every cent. Go to Bodymedia.com to read more about it. Dave

    sleep study?

When I had mine done, the 1st time, they hooked me up to monitors, etc. Since there were irregularities, I went for a 2nd night. I was hooked up to the same stuff as before, but this time I also slept with a CPAP mask on. The CPAP stopped my sleep apnea. Even better, it was no time at all after my surgery that I didn't need it anymore. Just one more great benefit from having weight loss surgery.

    Help me

My last class is the 2nd and I'm scared as well. I've come so far to not finish strong. But I think the cigarettes is way more important then the weight. Hell if I could lose weight I wouldn't be here lol. But I understand why they want us to lose the weight so I'll keep trying until I make it.

    My wife's having lapband Friday

Chase, as far as I am concerned, the fact that you care enough to find out more means you are a wonderful and supporting husband. Good for you! My husband (who is also a total sweetie) has been going to appointments with me. That just means the world to me. Like you, he does not really struggle with weight, but he has listened and asked questions at every office visit. I just feel liked he is a part of this and that we made this decision together, and that's enough for me. Good luck!
  16. Hi - I'm Heather. I haven't been on here for awhile. My surgery was on Feb. 21, 2014...today I am down to 201 from 256 in four months! I can shop in my own closet again! Lol I did struggle with a plateau in March/April, but the weight just started to fall off after that. I've recently been sick (unrelated to surgery) but I'm going to start exercising very soon. When I was at my heaviest, I suffered from plantar fasciitis, so my feet hurt and even walking quickly became painful. I also used to have swelling in my lower extremities. All gone!! I'd like to lose 31 more lbs and get a tummy tuck afterwards. I'd love to be 160-165. Thanks for reading! I'll post some before and after pics. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have.
  17. Thank you @@J.lynn The way u explained it makes better sense. I guess they didnt explain it correctly or something. Pretty much all she said was "no your policy doesnt cover WLS or any kind of weight loss program but if you pay your deductible($2000) then we will cover 80% and then i would pay the other 20%. I was just like ok thanks and hung up....i guess i will have to see what happens after the seminar. Sent from my SM-G530T using the BariatricPal App

    Eating more than usual :(

My 5th of 6th monthly dietician meetings is Wednesday, and I'm guilty of taking off a week or two after meetings. I've had weight loss every month, but I know the cheating ends soon.
  20. Thank you. Gaining before approval is really messing with me. It's a good time to really try and manage emotional/stress eating. I will be so happy when I have all the requirements behind me and have a surgery date.

    Waiting game

First of all, 10/20 is my birthday! I will be having a great time having pre-op testing done that morning, my sleeve surgery is on Halloween! Secondly, are you going through insurance? Most have hoops to jump through, various appointments to make and keep, meetings to attend, etc. Mine was pretty easy but I still had to do a psych eval and various appointments and tests. If you are interested there are many people on YouTube documenting their weight loss surgery. You can search WLS, RNY, VSG or DS. People do a video diary of their journey, very informative and fun to watch. A LOT of them are from California, many northern Cali.
  22. Congrats on your decision. By now, the first couple folks have had their surgery. I hope all is going well. I had a lot of pain and my stomach was very upset. The intubations tube (in and out) was done while I was out because I don't recall it. Anyway, originally I said I would have extra skin taken off and a boob lift when I lose all of the weight. Two days after surgery I told my husband he will have to be happy with a saggy bag of skin because I would never have another elective surgery. Now that I am 13 days out, feeling FRIGGIN FANTASTIC, I say, bring on the weight loss and the excess skin and boob lift will happen.... Good luck to you all, we are all here if you need us...

    Who am I

Hello bluejay, Are you thinking about getting the Band? In your post it is not clear what kind of reply you are looking for. I have been very happy with my band. I can not eat like a delicate lady instead of a hired hand and not only have I lost weight, but i feel so much better about who i am. Being out of control around food was a monkey on my back. Now it's gone. San Diego must be beautiful. I heard once that it has the best weather in the states. Lots of chances for outdoor fun! If you have more questions, please ask. We lapbandsters are here for you.

    Help me

Best thing I could suggest to to basically do the pre-op diet. Focus on getting protein in and cut out nearly all the carbs. When I did my pre-op phase before I got my sleeve it was 3 shakes a day plus some special protein soups/drink mixes that I got from my doc's office. If you can't get anything like that you could substitute with chicken broth or bullion. When you do low carb it takes a few days for ketosis to really kick in, but when it does it sheds a fair amount of weight quickly. Granted a good chunk of that initial loss is shedding extra water but every pound counts. You just need to be sure you're getting your vitamins in. Good luck to you!

    bougie size

No one but your surgeon can answer that... He may oversew, which would bring the size down.. my surgeon said that some docs cut close to the bougie, others loose, some oversew, others don't.. so the size of the bougie does not tell the whole story. My doc used a 36, over sewed, and left the Pylorus end loose to avoid potential problems. I have never had any problems eating what I want, or vomiting after eating... I don't lose super fast, but steady. I have read one study that said that the amount of fundus cut off during the surgery (to the patients in the study) did not predict weight loss. see page 10 for study, it has to do with fundus size, content voiding speed and weightloss with the sleeve...
