First congrats on your surgery. You seem to be doing well so far. I was never given a calorie goal just fluid & protein but I checked out of my own curiosity. Those first couple of weeks I was eating a bare 200 calories which increased to about 300 on soft foods. But that was me. Many eat more. You’ll find there are a lot of different requirements around calories & we have different experiences about them too. If you feel you need more accountability or guidance ask your dietician &/or surgeon. You may not be able to meet any of their goals in those first weeks but as long as you’re making an effort & are close, especially to the protein & fluid goals, you’ll be ok. But as you’re only ‘eating’ 3 meals a day you should be close to your protein goal & doing fine. Just one thing to watch though, during the surgery a lot of nerves are cut which means messages aren’t getting through to your brain: hunger, full, etc. And fluids go through you quite quickly. It’s important to tread carefully & sip slowly. All because it seems like you can doesn’t mean you really can or should. All the best.

you're not going to be eating enough in the early weeks to worry about calories. Your focus should just be on protein and fluids (esp fluids).

My sister had the bypass 25 years ago she used to get a blood transfusion due to being anemic about once or twice a year at about year 5 now she gets a blood transfusion every 2-3 months. Again she is 25 years out takes her Vitamins eats right 5’4, 125 pounds and is 62. I choose the sleeve due to things she has had issues with regarding the bypass I had gastritis and severe acid prior to surgery. They removed the bad part of my stimach with the sleeve and heading to 7 weeks out zero acid - knock on wood

I had my surgery 2/3 and was released from hospital 2/4. My incisions don't really hurt, just sore. When I had my lap band removed in 10/2021, they must have really yanked on the liver to retract it during surgery because that hurt REALLY BADLY for 3 weeks. Compared to that, this is a non-carb cake walk. I am electing to stay on clear liquids until tomorrow or Monday as I'm not hungry and I don't want to screw the pouch up with too much too soon. I feel really good and Praise Jesus, no complications from the surgery. Now it's time to begin my new relationship with food. No longer will it be my confidant and comforter, but simply my nutrition to keep my body healthy and free of junk. Drinking Smooth Moves hot tea to get my bowels moving after surgery. I've always struggled with constipation and I'm hopeful this will keep me regular. -
Hi everyone! I had VSG done 9/13. I went in to surgery at 241 and today I weigh 187. I wanted to post because of a couple reasons. I have hit a big stall, I have been fluctuation up and down 2-3# for almost the a month now. Stalls before never got to me too bad, I would stay off the scale and trust the process. I weigh myself maybe once or twice a week. I’m starting to mentally panic because in addition to this stall, I have found myself slipping into some bad habits. I’m in a season of high stress (I’m in nursing school, working, and being wife/mom)- which is no excuse. Up until this point I was not perfect, but mindful of my food choices and walked about 8-15 miles a week. Now, I go a week or two without exercising, and I’m eating junk. I’m really discouraged about it. I plan to call my nutritionist to address it and get ahold of it before it gets away from me. I’m also going to make an appointment with my counselor, even though I know the things I need to do, and it’s not unreasonable that I’m feeling overwhelmed in this season of my life. This post is in no way a pity party or seeking for sympathy/attention. I need accountability from a group of people who can relate and give some tough love. You all are inspirations. Thank you for reading my vent :) and sorry if the format is funky, I use the app and sometimes it comes out wonky..

I'm lap band (2006) to RNY (10 days ago). Lap Band simply never worked for me. Never lost any weight at all with it, although I lost via Keto a few years after. When it was removed last week they said it had slipped right up above my stomach. Silly things in my opinion.

February 2nd was my day. So far, minimal pain. Nothing needed more than Tylenol. I’m surprised. I had the revision from the sleeve to the roux-en-y. Best decision I’ve made ever for myself. This is definitely different in feelings for food-not hungry even the slightest and still cooked breakfast for my Mr with no nausea or desire for a bite. I’ll be full liquid diet for 2 weeks. After the sleeve I kept saying I was hungry and they called it head hunger, I tried to convince myself that’s what it was, lol, but no-i was genuinely hungry. Now working on 64 ounces of water a day and taking my needed meds throughout the day so I can get them all in. Need 60-80 grams protein but not there yet. 10 grams is all I’ve gotten in since surgery. Have been reads it this is only temporary and I’ll be able to drink more of the protein drink eventually. I’ll be honest, the stings from the shots to prevent blood clots is worse than my belly pain. I’ll do those for two weeks twice a day. Done in Iowa and so excited. Oh and I’m in a wheelchair because of fractures in my pelvis. Got an upright walker and am able to start taking steps!! It’s all so new, I’m loving the excitement this has brought with it. Thank you everyone. I’ve known the possibility of regain was there. It was one of the reasons I was ok with exceeding my weight loss goal - room to move. The challenging aspects for me is in understanding why. I can accept the return of hunger but the fact I haven’t changed my diet or calorie intake (except for those two Christmas weeks) & if anything I’m a little more active (not building muscle so I can’t blame that 😉) messes with my head. And I know it’s only a very small amount so far but … more reflection & introspection needed I think. Anyway, I love a lamb cutlet as you know so last night I baked some with a pistachio dukkha crust. Those brown crunchy bits were super yummy. Ate two last night, two tonight & will freeze the last two. I love this baking tray. It was originally my mum’s biscuit tray. She gave it to me 35 odd years ago. I use it for everything including roasts, baked vegetables, as a drip tray, etc. If it goes into the oven I use the tray - hence the darker, burnt baked in flavour you can see in the corners 😁. Do you have a favourite cooking pot or pan? PS - looking gorgeous as usual @Sophie7713. -

Really value and appreciate what each of you have said here. Thank you for your perspectives! I balance and evaluate the nutrition, how clothing fits/the mirror and how I feel. I, too, could not maintain the lowest weight at 113. Unrealistic. I was too gaunt. Then, it was 118. Then, 122. I feel my best at 125 pounds. Very realistic. However, when it began to creep up to 130 this winter (adjusting to a new climate) - that was unacceptable! Sooooo a combination of re-grouping my strategy, getting back to a regular routine after many major life changes along with intermittent fasting - this week, I'm at 128. I do look forward to working on the remaining 3 pounds by the end of the month. I know this is not the fashion post - but I believe it is good to remind ourselves, like Silly Kitty said - the mirror speaks volumes. Another very important tool to our health and well being. We all know some fluctuations are normal. But aren't you glad our conversation with ourselves has changed? And, we do care now. Not obsess, just vigilant. I went for years before my sleeve tool - once allowing my weight to pile on and upwards to 298! I am so proud of all of us that we can dialogue and have this honest conversation. This week at 128. I never dreamed I'd ever wear stretch pants, wear tall slender boots and a belted jacket... It just spurs me on to reach my 125 goal in a healthful and satisfying manner. Red cabbage and date salad tonight. -
18 days post VSG- can’t tolerate protein shakes

Quite common for people to develop a sensitivity/intolerance to lactose after surgery. For many it’s temporary. Thankfully there’s a lot of non lactose products about these days you can swap in for your protein shakes & then yoghurt, milk, cheese, as you introduce them into your eating plan. I stopped the shakes after 2 weeks & focussed on getting my protein & nutrients via real foods: yoghurt, milk, broths, scrambled eggs, etc. to begin. Sure I didn’t hit my protein goals at first but I got there. -
Age with wls I am 70 was ready now the surgeon close to me says 65

Hi newbie, there are surgeons who do surgery on 70 year olds . Iam 70 had RNY in November as of today 12 weeks out lost 40 pounds. Hang in there and search for your surgeon. -
Thanks all! I used the topical NSAID for a week and it greatly helped with my back pain. I am slowly nursing my back back to health. First week I walked (first couple days I couldn't even go 1/2 a mile, but eventually got back up to my regular 2). This week, I have been swimming and also using the stair machine/treadmill on an incline (training for Kilimanjaro). Next week I'm going to attempt some yoga again and hope by end of week 3 I'll be back to full strength and can add some weights back in. It's odd for me to say, but 2+ years out from surgery, I am itching to get back to working out. Pre-surgery the back injury would be an excuse to stop working out and just eat too much. Still not perfect, but its amazing to come so far in both physical and mental ways.

Today is my last day off from work. Back at it tomorrow night. Today I worked on getting ready for my work week and finishing my project of organizing my bathroom. I’ve been feeling so good today that I totally forgot and took a huge sip of water. I was ready to throw up- instant hot flash and in the bathroom I went. Thank goodness it was only water and I didn’t do it with any sort of food. Now I’m freezing and just laying low. Hope everyone else is having a good day! -

Sometimes if you keep badgering your insurance company, you can get coverage on things. Any possibility of other insurance? As far as three surgeries goes, I started with the lap band self pay in Mexico. I lost about 90 pounds, then started having chest pressure and pain. That was sourced to the band so I had it removed and the VSG done. I never really lost any weight with it due to way too much going on in my life. I wanted to go to bypass at that time, but the surgeon said that the sleeve was the better option. Approximately 11 years later, I find myself with the same chest pressure and pain, not cardiac related. I don’t really have anything come up with reflux, just the pain. I’m now scheduled for the conversion to bypass next month. I’m lucky that my insurance covers it. I worry that it might be three strikes, you’re out. My current surgeon said that he didn’t feel like I failed with the band since I kept off a good bit of the weight. I hope that things go well for you on the 11th and that somehow insurance coverage will happen. -

True. I have found I don’t even like too many refined carbs anymore because they get stuck in my intestines and take a week or so to sort out. These foods will still exist in the world and you will eventually be able to have them again. (I do occasionally need to remind myself of this about holiday treats.) -
Yesterday I met with the dietitian. I don’t have a surgery date yet, but she is having me start a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. No refined carbs. I was writing down healthy snack ideas like Greek yogurt with granola (my favorite). Then I saw that granola is not allowed because it is a refined carb. I started crying! I think I was crying more about the idea of a diet than the actual granola. It’s been an emotional week for me as I launch forward on my WLS journey. All my tests are done. Two appointments left (follow up with psychologist and dietician). It finally feels like this is really happening.

In 2012 I had lab-band surgery. My body hated the band from the start; nothing but problems. I lost about 82 pounds with the band but mainly only due to being unable to eat and vomiting. I developed acid reflux so bad that I slept sitting up for three years. I visited my doctor in 2017 and told him I could not deal with it anymore. He suggested converting to VSG. At the time, the surgery was not known for its acid reflux issues. I was converted in Dec 2017. Acid reflux left, and for one year, I felt normal. However, immediately after the conversion surgery, I never felt restriction. I felt I could eat normally. One year after the conversion, reflux returned. Now with a hernia, gastritis, and GERD. My bariatric doctor had passed away, so I went to a gastro doctor to have an EGD done. He sent me to a surgeon who suggested converting to RNY. I did not want to have a third surgery, so I put it off for another year as I thought the medications they prescribed would help. They didn't work. We just kept increasing the dosage. Fast-forward to this year, and I visited a new bariatric doctor who just completed another EGD on me this past Monday. All the same, issues are still there but now Barretts Esospogus. Insurance is denying the repairs as they were caused by bariatric surgery, which is ridiculous. I am a vocalist and truly worried about esophagus cancer as my lining has already been severely damaged. I will probably have to self-pay for the three-part surgery, and I am not happy about that. I am curious has anyone else had to have all three surgeries? If so, I would like to hear your stories and success. As I mentioned, I lost with the band. However, I gained most of the weight back after the band was removed and had to wait for the VSG conversion. I never really lost weight at all the sleeve. If you had all three surgeries, did you improve with acid reflux, gastritis, GERD, and were you losing any weight? Did any of you have Barretts Esophagus? I will know my fate next Friday, Feb. 11th

Another week and still stalled. It’s sooooo frustrating. Last time the scale moved was January 14th. It is hard to not feel discouraged.

Like you, I suffered from the same issues. I have Barretts Esophagus, GERD, and a Hernia. I have lab band in 2012, was sleeved in 2017, and will be converted to RNY next month. Even though medically necessary, insurance is denied due to being complications from bariatric surgery, which is absurd; they will complete a peer-to-peer next week. If not approved, I will have to self-pay. -

This is very interesting and is a current issue that I have been battling for two years to have covered by my insurance company. I had lab-band done in 2013. Starting weight was 317 and got down to 222 pounds. However, I suffered from extreme acid reflux, causing me to sleep sitting up for three years. I was vomiting acid and sick every meal. When I spoke to my doctor about this, he immediately suggested conversion to VSG. While awaiting the approval for the VSG conversion, they made me do it in two parts. One surgery to remove the band, wait six months for the stomach to reshape itself, and then complete the VSG surgery. I gained 50 pounds back of my lost weight. I had the conversion done in December 2016. Everything went well. Acid was gone. However, I never felt restricted at all. I never really lost weight. Fast forward one year to 2017, and the acid returned. In 2019, after having severe complications from acid reflux and developing a nightly cough, I called my doctor only to find out that he had passed away. I decided to see an upper GI doctor who did an EGD and found me with Hernia, GERD, and Esophagus damage. He sent me to a surgeon specializing in throat cancer and bariatric issues. Submitted to have surgery was denied. We have been battling this for almost two years. I went this past week to another bariatric doctor familiar with my deceased doctor's work and also completed an EGD himself on me this past Monday. Same thing, Hernia, GERD, and now they believe I have Barretts Esophagus. They submitted to the insurance to repair and again denied. Insurance says these complications came from bariatric surgery and did not cover even if medically necessary; My new doctor is also a lawyer (go figure); he is completing a peer-to-peer next week to try to have them complete the repair one final time. If approved, I will only need to pay for the bypass conversion. So fingers crossed. I feel as if my insurance company would rather me die of esophagus cancer than keep me from dying from cancer. It is truly sad. -
Hello all. I am new to this forum. I am 18 days postop and struggling to get my protein shakes. Prior to surgery…nonissue. Now any dairy causes me to go to the bathroom. I assume this is normal due to the rapid dumping from stomach to intestines. Has anyone found any tolerable non dairy protein? How did you get your protein in postop? Also… I was home on FMLA for 2 weeks postop. Felt great so I went back to work Tuesday. Now for the past two nights I’ve had some left sided flank pain. What could it be? This happen to anyone else?

I assume this is normal due to the rapid dumping from stomach to intestines. Has anyone found any tolerable non dairy protein? How did you get your protein in postop? Also… I was home on FMLA for 2 weeks postop. Felt great so I went back to work Tuesday. Now for the past two nights I’ve had some left sided flank pain. What could it be? This happen to anyone else? -
