    Bariatric Vitamins

When did everyone start taking the vitamins? I didn't like the Bariatric Vitamins either so I bought all my vitamins separately

    Bariatric Vitamins

Thats the reason my surgeon told me to start the iron at week #3 because it tends to be kind of heavy for the new stomach and you may vomit. As far as I know the bariatric advantage the iron is separate, there is another company that everything comes in one chewable tablet if I'm not mistaken it's called bariatric fusion.

    Can you eat chocolate?

Are you seriously calling me fat on a bariatric forum! WOW! I should know better than to answer creatures like u Sent from my GT-N7100 using the BariatricPal App
  5. My doctor put me on phentermine before referring me to bariatrics. It worked for about a month but it's easy to eat around. You can also take an ephedra/caffeine combo aka EC stack. In either case, working with a doctor is the right way to go. Good luck to you.

    February bypass buddies?

And my story goes on and on. Called this am. First they told me they couldn't find me at all, then they said I didn't have anything scheduled since all the ones completed in January. Talked to surgeon's office person, said it had been submitted and approval, was back, had I received my presurgery packet of paperwork? Nope I said and the mail had gone already today. Well I should have it by Wednesday. Yes she believes it is still,in for that day. Hmmm then Amber my Bariatric Facilitator calls, I tell her all the things that have transpired. She is going to talk to Kathie, the head scheduler in surgeon's office and call me Tuesday morning. My life is becoming a cheap soap opera daily. Is she or isn't she, will she or won't she,to cut or not to cut? HELP! Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Do you know anything about Dr. Johnson at Atlanta Bariatrics. I am trying to find people that have gone through him for the lapband procedure. I would love to find out people's thoughts. Did you end up seeing Dr. Duncan or did you see Dr. Johnson?
  8. I think my surgeon must have checked with my insurance company prior to having done all the prerequisites for approval and they told them it was a covered procedure. I had to go on a 6 month medically supervised diet, see a nutritionist, and have a psych eval(its easy). Through that whole time I worried about getting approved. I had a BMI of 38 with no diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. The only thing I can think of that I had was bad knees( due to the weight). After I finished my prerequisites and had all my info sent in I was a nervous wreck. After a couple of weeks the bariatric program called and told me I had been denied because it wasn't a covered procedure which they did not understand because they had been told that it was covered. The bariatric program told me not to give up and they told me some things I could try to get approval. I was DEVASTATED for 3 days. They called me back on the 3rd day and told me the insurance company had called back and said it was a covered procedure. So I went from having a covered procedure to a not covered procedure back to a covered procedure. The story gets even stranger: A lady I work with has a BMI of >40 and has the comorbities(diabetes, cholesterol etc) has gone to 2 separate bariatric programs(1 was the one I used) and they have told her its not a covered procedure under her insurance. We have the same insurance company (through work). The only difference we can figure out is that I bought the more expensive plan and she didn't. We don't know if that would really make the difference or not or its some arbitrary thing the insurance company came up with. Good luck to you and I hope you get your band.

    Aaack! Help! I'm freaking out!!!

Yes it is true every surgeon is different. I actually take Aleve and was only kept from it for the first three months. He wanted to wait until the healing process was complete before ok’ing it. I only take non-prescription strength and never more. I also make sure I’m eating something with it to prevent any ulcers from forming. Not to say they never will but due to my arthritis and other things, this is the only medication that has ever worked the best for me. The good thing about Aleve is you don’t need it as much or as often as your usual NSAID, but still can cause some issues. I suggest anyone who has questions about using any NSAIDs should definitely seek one on one advice first from your bariatric surgeon. Especially if you are taking more than the recommended dosage and getting Rx strengths.
  10. Hi Rakiki, We're all in the same boat. Last time I called at Dr. Savoie's office, his secretary told me he was suppose to start his surgeries in a day or two. I was curious, so I called the surgery department and they told me they hadn't receive any files from Dr. Savoie yet. I also heard the hospital wasn't a 100% ready for those kind of surgeries yet. It seems it won't be for now at least not before April and even then. Sorry, I wish I could have better news. For me two but if I can suggest 2 books I read that really helped me to know more about the before and after lapband surgery and dealing with the emotionnal part are those 2 books. The Emotionnal First + Aid Kit, A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery by Cynthia L. Alexander, PsyD and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Achieving Permanent Weight Loss With Minimally Invasive Surgery by Jessie H. Ahronni, Ph.D, A.R.N.P. (really good book). I got them at Amazon.ca but you're close to Chapters so maybe you can get them there if not, they probably get them for you. Clempier, Beresford NB

New Joy and all our bandsters, I still keep track of this thread. New Joy, stay with it. Getting a fresh fill and going back to the basics (i.e. start with liquid again) will renew your resolve and will get you to your goal. It took me a year and a half and I too went back to liquid to jumpstart my second attempt to reach my goal early last year and it worked. So, I have no doubt that you will get there! If you need someone to talk to, please post. I will respond. This system works and sometimes, all you need is a little support. My dietician was the greatest ally I had! He always called back and kept me on track. He left the clinic I used last year and I really miss his help. The other dietician talked to me also and she is just as great!!!!!!! Stay with it everyone! Sometimes you just have to start over to get to your goal! Anthony

    January Sleevers

I'm scheduled for surgery with Dr. Alvarez in Piedras Negras on January 6th (a week and two days!!) I'm excited and scared. I'm not so scared about the surgery itself, I'm scared about life afterwards. I guess the unknown is always scary, right? I've been doing my liquid diet for a few days now and not liking it very much. I tried the powdered stuff from Bariatric Advantage and couldn't do it. It was so disgusting I actually gagged! So I'm drinking cans of Slimfast (or the Safeway brand), and V8 and sometimes fruit juice. I found this really good juice at Safeway called Fruit 2day. It has little bits of fruit in it (my favorite is the Pomegranate Blueberry.) It comes in little 6.5 fl. oz. bottles and is 120 calories. I also tried the broth you buy at the store in the can Soup section and it wasn't very good. So I have been heating up cans of chicken noodle and then just straining the solids out. I'm using the liquid Protein bullets to supplement my protein. I saw that someone asked about where to get Vitamins. I got the gummy Multivitamins and SF chocolate calcium chews at costco. And then I got the sublingual B-12 and chewable Biotin from iherb.com. iHerb has a lot of good stuff.

    UK Sleevers

Hello, I'm so happy to see a UK forum! I came across USA site in January and only later on I realized that UK has it's own page! I'm a diabetic, type 1 for over 20 years. User of a Medtronic insulin pump for 7 years, under care of a Diabetic Clinic in King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill. I applied for a bariatric surgery at the beginning of 2010. My application was accepted 7 months later by my local Hospital Trust in Kent. I elected to have my surgery at King's for obvious reasons. I had 2 meetings with my surgeon, at that time it was Mr Ali Hallal, to discuss all available surgical procedures. Originally I was interested in a band but, as a result of my consultations I changed my decision to VSG. 6 months later, just when I thought I was totally forgotten, I received a call from hospital administration asking me to come for a pre-assessment on 12.07.11. Wow!!! I think all went well and I was OK-ed for a surgery. Apparently I even lost some weight, down to 110 kg. Well, it's still size 26-28 ( I'm very top heavy ). Today I'm waiting for a call confirming availability of a hospital bed for tomorrow. Admission after 18.00 on 15.07.11, surgery on Saturday 16.07.11 if its a green light ?! I'm a bit shell - shocked! Nothing was happening for such a long time and suddenly - Ca-boom!!! I spend all my free time, since my return from hospital, reading your storeys. Printing your advice, especially about taking drugs and supplements. Thank you to Jane, Yorkshire pudding, Cherrydrop, Bornagainbabe and Snowcrystal - I think we're sharing the same surgeon- Mr. Patel. Thank you to Lynnette43 for sharing her post-op experiences about her pump. I tried desperately to get in touch with my diabetic specialist but so far with no success. Time is a serious problem, from 0 activity to full speed! Not enough to make contact with people! Shell I panic? :bolt: . -
  14. I called Dr. Bellanger's office and was informed that he doesn't see other surgeons' patients. Dr. Hargroder told me the same thing. I'm hoping they aren't the only two in town, to where the only way I can see one of them is if I go to the ER in excruciating pain and tell the ER I may need to see a bariatric surgeon, that it's possible any pain I'm having may be lap band-related.

Lower Body Lift - Tips And Advice?

My first tip: Do NOT watch videos of this surgery on YouTube. My second tip: While watching videos of this surgery on YouTube, I found one by a doctor in California who was giving a presentation to other docs on this. He said that almost all of his bariatric patients are deficient in certain vitamins/minerals that are essential to healing, and most docs don't think to check for this. I had never heard of the things people were deficient in, so I don't think you'd find them in normal Vitamins. He puts them on a product called Pro Care prior to the surgery to boost their nutritional readiness. I found it online, and there are several products, including one for surgery prep. When I have my knees replaced this summer I plan to go on this for a few weeks prior. Please let us know how your surgery goes!

In case anyone is interested this web site is very good. Has recipes for protein shakes, and foods. It also explains the different diets like liquids and purees. I was first taken back because it was a store but it much more. Gives good advice. BariatricEating.com - BE, Inc. The number one bariatric website for protein, vitamins, and success.
  17. Kinda new to this forum. My surg date is Feb 27 also. A little nervous as I have no family living near me, they are all about 1300 miles away. Have 2 good friends who will be looking in on me once I get home. The hospital I will be at is 40 miles from my home because that is where my Dr practices as he runs the Bariatric Division at that hospital. My friends are going to drive me there and back. I purposely selected this particular Dr. because of his experience and that particular hospital is one of excellence. I have been on the Pre-Surg for 9 days and just weighed myself for the first time. I actually lost 10 pounds. I was thrilled. I plan to return to this forum and swap info, recipes that help, etc. I was always height/weight proportionate until I was injured in a fall Oct 21, 1998 (I'll never forget that date) but now have gained more than I am comfortable with and now I have Osteoarthritis which has resulted in the need for a hip and knee replacement, and back surgery may also be needed later if the hip and knee surgery doesn't help enough. My goal is to lose 100 lbs. Impossible for me to work out because of the hip, knee and back pain, but they just repaired our pool where I live (it's been down) but once my incisions heal, I plan to make good use of it.

    Condolences - Blossom

I’m in total shock. My deepest sympathy to Philip and her family. I’m sadden and my heart feels heavy in grief. I remember when Blossom came into lives, I remember her posting pics of herself and asking us to vote which one to use as an avatar. Then I remember her picture gone and I asked her why and she remarked “I live in a small town and a bariatric doctor just opened an office here and will be doing bands. I don’t want to be recognized.” I know she often talked of gardening and I’ve decided to plant a flowering tree in her honor. It will grow in view of the lake. Carolyn you will be missed.
  19. Kudos to you!!! By advocating for yourself, you're advocating for the other future bariatric patients at your hospital -- good nursing, like we learned back in nursing school (oh so long ago..... ) I have a feeling they will make this right in the long run. They really don't have a choice, do they?

    Im Getiing Cold Feet :(

I have felt the same. I am an RN on a post op bariatric unit- I understand. But also, I can answer any of your questions. Working on this unit for the past 4 years I have seen the good, the bad, the ugly- but also the inspiring. I have seen people regain their life, health, and confidence. It's a new beginning. A very big change- and change is scary. The thing is- you have to do this for you. You need to be totally educated on the choice and go in to it with the knowledge of how this thing works. Any questions at all- just ask. Ill be happy to answer.
  21. Kari, it sounds to me like you shouldn't have any trouble making the medical case for surgery. And you don't have to ask your aunt about whether the surgery is covered if you don't want to. Somewhere you must have a copy of your insurance contract--ask your aunt for a benefit booklet if you can't locate it. Then look for Exclusions. If you find the section labeled Exclusions you should be able to quickly determine whether bariatric surgery is covered or not. What you might very likely see is a phrase that says something like: "Treatment for weight loss is excluded, except for treatment of morbid obesity." If that's what it says, or something like it, then the next step is to get to a doctor for a physical. Be sure they put the diagnosis of morbid obesity in your file and on your record. The code for this diagnosis is 278.01, and that number should be on everything for which you seek treatment starting as soon as possible. You want to make the case that you suffer from this medical condition and that treatment is necessary. If your policy excludes all sorts of bariatric surgery you will have a different problem. Do you work for a company large enough to be self-insured? Or do you have an "off the shelf" policy from a major carrier? The answers to these questions will determine what your next move is.
  22. I researched a few surgeons in Atanta and decided on Dr. Titus Duncan (Peachtree Bariatrics & Surgical) for one because he is in my network and two is one of the best in the industry. I read the earlier post about his process being patient driven and the comment following that something was wrong with that approach, but I found it is wonderful! Patient driven means it is up to you the patient to get all the pre-op done and show that you are really serious about the surgery. Why waste a physician's time with consultations to only back out. I am driven so I guess this appealed to my need to feel somewhat in control. 6/20/09 Seminar 6/22/09 Met with PCM 6/23/09 Nutrion Evaluation 6/24/09 Psych Evaluation 6/25/09 Cardiologist EKG/Stress Test 7/10/09 Packet submitted to insurance for approval I have Tricare Prime - South and what I have heard is the approval should be pretty quick. My coordinator at PSB instructed me to check with Tricare around Wed. 7/15. I am trying not to be so anxious but know that once I get the approval I will still have a little bit more waiting because Dr. Titus' surgery schedule stays pretty full.
  23. I totally get the thin thing - totally. I've regained from a BMI of 19 to 21.5 and feel like an elephant. I hate it. I want to be that thin again. Its not the first time I've heard of tubing puncturing the skin. But not without infection. What I'm struggling with is the treatment, in a first world country. Unless I'm seriously misunderstanding. There is simply no way tubing would be pushed back inside in an office procedure - unless you mean just a tiny portion above the muscle. Any bariatric surgeon is going to understand that infection will travel up the tubing and lead to erosion. An removed port and open tubing is so risky! If that is seriously the truth, your troubles are probably far from over Model. I would even guess the entire tubing should have been replaced and a new port added. And truthfully, from your photos, your port was tilted and half unattached anyway. That's what mine looked like (not as bad) at a BMI of 19 - it was visible all along, right from a BMI of 36. plastic surgeon removed the back off it and sewed it back down at a different location and you can barely see it now. People arent mean, they just dont like to feel they're being made fools of by a troll. And your story is less than credible, which makes people suspicious. If its all true, then you really do need to face the prospect of losing that band at some stage and need to start getting your head around how you will cope with that. At the very least, you probably need a new port and tubing to save the band and make it functional for the future.

Nope,i'm kinda part of her group here. She's scheduled February 20th for a RnY & she's been posting about her journey on the Out with the Old In with the New thread on Bariatric Pal. I'd be the first to tell you she can be a hoot but she also has all her basic facts straight, one of my favorite people. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app
