    Week 2 - Pureed Foods

Am 3 days into Puréed foods. I used to have the lapband and wasn't successful with it. This time I am finding it had to swallow the puréed foods like chicken. I am actually finding it hard to swallow at all. Is this normal?

    Ontario support!

Hi, I'm from Ontario (Kingston) but I am going the private route. My bmi is not high enough for OHIP to cover it. My surgery is June 30. Took me about 3 months from the time I started talking to the company to my date of surgery.

    Newly Banded!

    REGRET

I wasn't all happy with the surgery, actually i hated it for about 3 - 4 months! I had real buyers remorse. . .I've been out now 1 year and 1 month and have gotten so used to it. . . I'm still losing but really slowly, but just cause my weight loss has slowed down doesn't mean that my life sucks now. . .nope, I am 12 lbs from goal and look good. . . I can do so many things now that I couldn't do before when I was morbidly obese, but if you mean after you get to your maximum weight loss goal and don't need to lose more will I regret it? I don't know. . .my fear is when I'm older. .. you know how the elderly already don't eat and are frail and many suffer from malabsorption of Vitamins and minerals, what will happen to those folks who have this surgery? Including me and I already have severe malabsorption problems with Vitamin D? If the elderly don't eat much with stomaches, what are we going to endure towards the end? That is my fear, the unknown . . . but that is yet to be seen I suppose. . .

    Surgery tomorrow

Best of luck to you. Please take your pain meds after surgery , keep on your clear liquids, walk around to help with the gas and you will be just fine. I'm doing well, had my surgery on 3\8\2011 more than 30lbs down. I'm walking now, 3 miles per day and feeling much better. Take care of your self and god bless. Check in with you tomorrow.

    REGRET

Everyone always says how much they love the surgery, it's good to hear that someone else suffered from buyers remorse. I'm 5 weeks out from surgery and I've been fighting depression. I know that this surgery was the best thing for me for health reasons and everyone tells me that I'll eventually love it, but right now, I wish I could turn back the clock and not go through with it. I spent over 2 years researching and talking to people about their experiences with the surgery and thought I was prepared, but I was wrong. I have the same thoughts about how the surgery will impact my health when I'm older. But, as someone in the support group that I attend pointed out...without the surgery, I probably wouldn't have gotten old enough to worry about it. Because of my weight and the related health problems, I was on my way to an early grave. I've got a great support group and they're helping me sort through my concerns, fears and regrets. I'm looking forward to the day that I can honestly say that I love my new sleeve.

    REGRET

The first two weeks after my surgery was awful. But even as miserable as I was, I don't remember ever thinking that I wished I hadn't done it. I was 100 lbs overweight, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, horrible back pain and bad knees. I knew I was heading towards a really bad place. I am now 4 months out and as of this morning have lost 54 lbs and I feel like a new person. I am off ALL of my medication now with the exception of a Tylenol here and there for a small amount of back pain. Are there times that I look at someone eating something really good and wish I could eat it? Absolutely! But that thought stays with me for literally a second or so and then i come to my senses and can't even imagine eating it or even wanting it. I'm not sure why anyone would be worried about malabsorption when elderly because of the sleeve. Our stomachs were just made smaller - we didn't lose any of our intestines. Elderly people generally eat less but also generally eat slower so there should be time to absorb whatever you eat. I figure having a sleeve might actually be better preparing us for how we will be eating later on :-) With regards to the malabsorption piece . . . that why I wanted a sleeve instead of a RNY. I had thyroid cancer 7 years ago and it took them 3 years to get my meds exactly right so that they were at a level to hopefully keep the cancer from coming back. I didn't want to take ANY chance that any of those meds would be malabsorped.

Mommy, I can reach my arms around you!

That was the first amazing thing that happened to me as well. My daughter is also 8. She hugs me everyday now with arms wrapped tight and tells me how skinny I am getting. <3

    2 week postop

Congrats on your success.... But you are still healing so if your dr doesnt ok mushies yet please know that it is worth the wait. I had to wait 3 weeks which meant 5 weeks total on liquids....

That is amazing growth for such a short time. If any of you are gardening buffs, check it out at: The Garden Guy It has a lot of cool stuff! Articles, my Garden Journal, my gardening credentials, Q&A, recipes, Message Board Gardening Forums, Readers Garden Stories, and a lot more. I would welcome your feedback on how I can improve it! Cramps

I think the surgery just throws your hormones out of wack. I have Mirena and hadn't had a period in almost 4 years. A week after the surgery my period came. It's been back ever since. I loved having no period. It's been a year so I will see if my New Mirena (yup reupping) will cause my periods to stop again. I hope things get better for you.

    Cramps

I've gotten my cycle 2 times since I was sleeved on 4/10/13. I was always pretty normal and cramps were not too bad. These past 2 cycles have been a nightmare. I literally have to stay home and the only thing that calms my cramps is the liquid loritab that I received when I was discharged. The cramps are seriously unbearable. I am terrified to get it this month! I can't call in once a month to work. I'm thinking of going on the pill to see if that will help. I have my 3 month post op appointment on Monday so I will discussing this with my surgeon. I really do hope it gets better because it literally makes me stay in bed all day. I know exactly what ur going thru.
  19. No worries. 1200 is not a long term number, and it doesn't matter much because he "cheats". He went on a business trip for 3 weeks and lost 1 pound (at least he didn't gain!), but the weight started dropping again when he got back... nowhere near as fast, but he's doing well. Low calories will always cause fat loss. The scale may not show it due to fluid retention, but for my hubby it is working. His cheat days boost his weekly totals, and allow him to drop the cortisol-induced fluid weight. If I put him on a "sustainable" number of calories, he'd still cheat (he cheats for emotional reasons, not hunger), and not see any movement on the scale at all... just like what happened on his business trip. Once he gets near goal, we'll get his bmr tested to see what his maintenance calories should look like. We'll build in a daily "cheat" that will hopefully make it all sustainable for him.
  20. So, I found out that my insurance approved my surgery (yeah!), but now I'm waiting for the scheduler to call with a date. The end of this week will be my second week of my liquid diet. Do you think I will still have to wait 2 weeks for surgery? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

    Carbs

My diet is 4 weeks protein, then vegetables, then a month later fruit and at 6 months I can have minimal carbs.
  22. Hey everyone! So I have started my diet which consists of 2-3 protein shakes a day. What brands of powder do you all suggest? My surgeons office recommends the brand that they sell at the office (bariatric fusion), but if I could buy it at the grocery store it would be much cheaper. Thanks!
