  1. You may experience a lot of random discomfort because of your weight loss. A couple of months in I had discomfort across my upper back. Went to my acupuncturist & jokingly said wonder if it’s because all my bras are too big. That was the cause. Bought some new underwear & pain gone. As you lose weight your centre of gravity changes & you start holding yourself differently. Suddenly muscles, ligaments you haven’t used in a while become active. You might get achy hips, lower back pain, etc. I realised I was slouching because my tummy wasn’t there any more to support my upper body. Had to retrain myself to stand up straight. Or it could be nerves spasming & reorientation themselves after surgery. Not sure exactly why you are experiencing discomfort - just some suggestions. If it persists contact your surgeon again.

    Not Losing

    Is it possible that being too low in the caloric intake scale can actually stall weight loss? I would think at a deficit, no matter how small, weight loss would still happen, but I've read that the body can stop losing and try to maintain bc it thinks it's in trouble. Maybe someone can shed more light on this?

    Cigars After Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

    I'll give this a bump! I agree with the mentality that cigars are not equal to cigarettes. They are a reward, a thing to savor, something you age and tend to like a fine wine or whiskey. My doctor said to throw out my humi's, but I just tucked em' away in the closet and have been changing the Bovi Humi Packs every month, maintining that 72% / 70 degrees. I'm going to make sure to hit some weight loss and health goals before truly thinking about lighting up, but would love to hear others experience with their sticks and whether or not anyone has actually gotten an ulcer from them?

    No weight loss

    I'm 10 weeks post-op (RYGB). I gained 10LBS the first week post-op and was almost in tears over it! Slowly, within the coming weeks the weight loss cranked up, until I shot past my weight on surgery day, and just kept going. Now, I've been at the same number for the last 7 days, but I'm tracking everything I consume, and I'm getting my walks in daily, so I know I'm doing right. Typically I'll have 3-4 days of loss followed by a week of "homeostasis" for lack of a better description, where I'm guessing my body is just getting used to the new normal. Keep on doing things by the book, and keep your chin up! Know you've got a lot of friends here and we're all rooting for you!! Please let us know when you make that breakthrough and start shedding

    I am at a weight loss stall for 17 days now. I'm 11 weeks po. Any suggestions for what worked for you? I walk 1.5 hours everyday and eat between 700 - 1,000 calories a day.
  6. Hey! For those of you who are or were avid chefs/home cooks how did weight loss surgery change that for you? How did it change exploring new recipes? Grocery lists? Not being able to make or eat certain things? I'm also quite scared of this. I love cooking, cook all my meals, am working on a cookbook, make food for people all the time. I've lost 25 lbs and just got approved for surgery. Having trouble understanding how my relationship with my love of cooking is going to change over time.   7. Hey, Just reaching out to the community for some support. I've recently been approved for gastric bypass after going through 4 months of supervised diet and mental health counseling. I can basically get my surgery as soon as possible after completing my EKG and endoscopy (Dr's words). When they went over the gastric bypass procedure with me and all the complications, deficiencies and how strict the diet is (no fresh vegetables for a while which is what I've heavily been relying on to lose weight and enjoy it too) I was almost knocked down to my old feelings of hopelessness. The truth is, hearing all of that terrified me. It scares me and makes me think that there are so many opportunities to mess up. I just want some advice on how to quell this fear and really fear of failure. It honestly didn't feel real to me until the Dr said I was good to go. I felt so ready and confident until this moment and I can't understand why. I feel like I should be celebrating and happy but I'm not. I'm frustrated and scared. Any help or advice on this?     Moms that do it all

    I do alot (but so does Mr. and the Kids), so I can't claim to do it all, LOL. But, I can speak about the energy levels: for the first 2-3 weeks I had very little energy and slept ALOT. Still managed to do what I needed to do during awake hours - including going back to work in week 3 - (just much slower and not as well as I would have liked). It did help that I had a desk job, and the fam did not expect me to do more than I could...that and the youngest in the house is a self-sufficient teenager so... Though sometime after the first month, out of nowhere I got some crazy energizer bunny power (despite the fact that I was one of those that subsisted on very, very, low calories) and its been like that ever since. I'm not sure if it was because the lost weight made it easier, or that all the large amounts of crap that I used to eat no longer slugged my system. Whatever the case, from what I have read on here, the lack of energy is temporary (barring any medical issues), and for alot, energy levels increase exponentially as you get further out.     Moms that do it all

    I haven't done the surgery yet but I'm a busy mom who has dieted a lot. In 2018 I did a lot of fasting and I mean like rolling 42-hour fasts. I was not hungry during a fast but I was so lethargic I struggled to keep the house. I did that for about a year and learned some coping skills: -Give yourself a lot of slack and compassion, take deep breaths, stay grounded. -treat it like exercise, push yourself while you are working but take frequent rests. -use electrolyte drinks more often especially if it's hot outside. -putting a small piece of salt in your mouth can boost your energy and halt hunger. -have as much of a routine as possible and keep it simple to avoid stress. Overall it is super hard having to deal with the stress of other people while your own body already feels so upset! I always put my kids first and it was to my whole family's detriment. Now I have to put the focus back on myself again and lose the weight once more.

    I was just thinking about this today. When I renewed my license I was probably 380, and the woman made me change my hair color (some days it looks browner, some days it looks blonder) and then said, "And your current weight?" I couldn't bring myself to say "380" out loud so I put 340... and now I'm 20+ pounds below that.

    Dumping 😭😭😭

    That does sound like early dumping, except the throwing up part. Check with your Doc as it almost seems like a stricture. I couldn't throw up unless something is stuck and even then it's more akin to spitting up. Since we have no pyloric valve our food/drink drops straight to the intestines so after a minute there is nothing in a place where it could through up. This is why I think stricture or similar could be in play. Check your protein drink. Not all are for weight control. Some have copious amounts of sugar. Bang on your surgeon's head until he gets the message you need help. Bring the protein drink and throw up on him you have have to. Don't get discouraged you will get through this. Good luck, Tek

    Regret and Depression

    For me I regret everything about the surgery I feel like I have destroyed an important part of my body to achive something normal dieting and addressing my emotional eating would have achived, a high percentage of surgery patients re gain weight just like with normal diets its not the "fix" we go into it thinking it is and it changes the way you eat and drink forever. Its like being on a very strict diet 24/7 with no break. I would love to be able to cheat just a little. The surgeon says that after 18 months keeping the weight off is up to you as the sleeve no longer works not sure how that happens but if thats the case why do the surgery at all. There are also so many other complications they dont really tell you about i know a young woman who has been sleeved for less than a year and currently having a 4th surgery to sort out complications she is having . Personally my reflux now takes double the strength of meds to control but if i dont eat every 3 hours i feel sick from the reflux so is my life better with a sleeve no it is not. Have i lost weight yes 20kg, but i am miserable and to me thats not worth it.

    Online "support group" not very supportive

    I have hated the shakes since day one of the pre-op diet. I have issues with sucralose, aceK and aspertame sweeteners (they induce immediate migraines) and EVERY product on my doctor's recommendations list contained them (shakes, puddings, drink mixes, etc). All of their proprietary private-labeled foods and drinks include them as well, you know, the ones at the office, which they really want to sell you "to make it easier." I had to search out alternatives with natural sweeteners and just about everything is sweetened with Stevia (rebA) or monk fruit extract and those products are HIGHLY over-sweetened. I used shakes during my pre-op when I could stand at the kitchen sink and chug them down, but once I had my surgery and could only sip slowly, they were out. I just couldn't drink them without gagging. So, I was always using alternative products to what the practice recommended, and started seeking out real food methods to meet my protein goals very early in the process. When I met the nutritionist she was impressed with my creativity and absolutely fine with my choices, the doctor not so much. Even though I was recovering well and losing weight, he seemed personally insulted that I wouldn't just take their plan "that has worked for thousands of patients" and unquestionably follow it. He tried to push me to go back to shakes and supplements, even though I was reaching my protein goals without them. He wasn't mean about it, but was quite forceful. I totally think it's an ego thing. So, the moral of my story is, there is more than one way to reach the finish line. If you are willing to do the research and find choices that are more appealing to you, while being in line with the nutrients you need to meet your goals, then go for it. Avoid the places you've reached out for support and found only judgement and resistance, and find groups that will help you get there. Like this one!

    Just a taste?

    This was my M.O. as well. I didn't do any "one bite for tastes" during weight loss phase on purpose. Even while I was cooking for the fam, I got the Kids or Mr. to taste it for me if the food I was cooking contained stuff that wasn't willing to eat myself (though closer to goal, i did the taste-then-spit-out-method while cooking). I'm now 3 years post op and have no prob taking a bite or two "for taste" or even just "for eats". My insignificant opinion is that it will never be easier to lose weight than those first few months post op. Take advantage...treats and yummies aren't going anywhere, you can have some later (plus like others say, you may not even want it anyway). Of course, if you really, really, really want to have a bite for taste, taste away. You won't be flogged for the act. Its really up to you what you to determine what your priorities are. We are all adults here and can take responsibility for our own actions! Good Luck! ❤️

    Just a taste?

    My mantra when I have a craving for those foods is, "When I reach my goal weight." When I reach my goal weight, I will be able to eat whatever I want, in moderation. A bite of pizza or a cookie here and there is not going to balloon me back to my starting weight, but eating those things with utter abandon will. So, I will allow myself very careful indulgences once I've lost the weight. Until then, I'm in losing mode and indulgences are not on the menu. Knowing the time will come when I can enjoy treats again helps me push past the cravings, where thinking they are forbidden forever makes me want some *right now.*

      I'm 63 and had my surgery in May 2021. I've lost 80lbs. since and down 4 clothes sizes. I feel 10 years younger! Seriously, the only thing I regret is not doing it 10 years ago. Yes, it is a learning curve and yes there are hurdles along the path, but if you stick to the plan and celebrate every step along the way, they are surmountable.

    Oh, I'm kinda anticipating that I will have a gradual weightloss instead of a big drop at the start. Whenever I do a big jump in diet to lose weight my body resists it like it has immunity lol. Then my body settles into ketosis and as long as I keep at it the weight will shift. Do you find it easier to keep at your diet? That's what Im hoping surgery will do for me. Like guardrails on the highway it will keep me from eating too much even when I feel really hungry. When you feel like you regret it what type of thoughts are coming up for you?

    Just a taste?

    I'm almost 21 months out. I'll occasionally eat something like I'll order a Gluten free pizza when my family gets pizza (though I rarely do this because last month the pizza sent me to the ER because they accidentally contaminated it and I have a wheat allergy). I attended my nephew's first birthday last weekend and had some gluten free cake. I'm known to get some no sugar added fudgesicles to snack on every now and then (40 calories per fudgesicle. I usually have one or two. They are currently in my freezer lol). So yes, on occasion I do, but I also monitor my calorie intake religiously and make sure if I do eat something off plan that I fit it into my daily calorie intake because I'm close to maintenance and want to take off a couple more pounds before I get there. I also know if I gain more than 5 pounds back I will freak out. I worked so hard to lose what I lost and I don't want to gain any of it back!

    Exactly this! Now I literally eat what ever I want because I exercise a lot. Early on, my cravings were for protein, fruits, and veggies. I do not eat much in the way of concentrated sugars at this point, due to reactive hypoglycemia, (said as I munch on some teddy Graham’s). 🤦🏼‍♀️With that said, I am in maintenance, ran 4 miles today, and do not want to lose weight. In maintenance, you can eat foods you want to eat providing they do not make you physically ill or cause you to gain unwanted weight.
  23. Here letting everyone know that my surgery was a success that I am getting down 22 ounces of water a day maybe more I just started full liquids two days ago and my highest weight was 387 pounds my current weight is 343 pounds also I have no nausea just stomach spasms and farting up a storm

    Like @catwoman7 I was laser focused on my plan for the first year or longer. I didn't have a piece of candy, or a cookie, or any previously favored treat. I was a binge eater, if one was good ten would be better. I was honestly afraid that one might turn into more. I wouldn't even do a low calorie version because in the past they were always stepping stones to a lot of the real thing. Rather, I turned my obsession to following plan. I was surprised by the pride I felt by following the simple rules of my plan day after day. For now stay focused and compliant to your plan and be rewarded with the positive feedback loop of losing weight. You are building new habits and a new lifestyle that will serve you for the rest of your life. Good luck, Tek
