  1. Yes I did, massive buyers remorse. I chose this myself and what if it ruins the rest of my life ..... I am feeling better now that I am progressing onto real food and can look after myself. I was so wobbly that my husband had to take care of everything for 8 weeks. I see really good weight loss and that is so uplifting

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I had vsg 11/17/21. I have lost 40 pounds in total. Only 28 since surgery. Now I have been on a stall for almost 4 weeks !! Any advice?? I am beside myself … HW 256 SW 244 CW 216

    PNW Recommendations?

    I lived in Seattle when I had my MMO + arm lift, now live in Seattle. Apparently we’re in one of the most expensive areas of the country for plastic surgery. I ended up going to Dr. Alex Earle in Miami. What would have cost me nearly $40,000 here cost me $16.100 in Miami. Even with travel costs I came out way ahead. I spent a week there post op, and then had a couple zoom follow up visits after that.
  4. You will have noticed people have a lot of different experiences. Some stay in hospital a day some two or 3 days. Some need opioid pain meds for 3 or 4 days but others don’t after 2 days. Some only experience more general discomfort. Some have a lot of gas pain but others very little. Some are constipated for days. Others have diarrhoea. Some move about pretty easily while others struggle getting up & down with their pulled muscles & internal sutures. Some have an energy drop & are fatigued for a couple of weeks. Others are fine & are back at work after a week. A lot of it depends on you & how you recover & respond to the surgery, anaesthetic, etc., whether your surgery was straight forward or if they have to do other things like a hernia repair. Also surgeons do things differently. Have a chat with your surgeon & ask them about what their patients generally experience & what you can expect. If you follow your plan, eat the foods you’re allowed & meet your goals (protein, fluids, carbs, etc.) you’ll be fine. You won’t throw yourself out of ketosis eating lettuce but I get the uncertainty & wanting to ensure you don’t make a mistake. Don’t be afraid to ask your dietician for a more defined diet if you will feel more comfortable about your food choices, portion sizes etc. And if you struggle to eat or can’t tolerate certain foods to begin ask them for alternatives.     Gas Pain post op

    Walk. Even laps around or inside your home. Gotta get that gas moving. Gas X can help too. I had no gas after my sleeve surgery but after my gall removal, oh, boy! Took a good 5 days for the discomfort, distended tummy & shoulder pain to reduce. You’re on purées already? Most are on liquids for two weeks after surgery & don’t get to purées until week 3. But every plan is different. 🤷🏻‍♀️
  6. I felt really really out of it when I woke up after my bypass, much worse than when I woke up after my sleeve. But the sleeve surgery lasted 26 minutes and the bypass was nearly 3 hours (it went long because there was an issue where they couldn't use the stapler to close the pouch and had to suture by hand). I felt absolutely miserable for a day or two but then started feeling a little better every day. Within a week or so I was feeling much much better. I don't know if I would say my stomach was sore, externally anyway. I had some weird twinges inside but that went away after about a month. I don't know what you mean about feeling my stomach or intestines, I didn't have any weird sensations other than the twinges every so often. No burning senations. They prescribed me Percoset, and I got ten of them to take home, I only took four, and two of them were just to help me fall asleep for two nights, I didn't need them anymore after that. I had gas pain after the sleeve, mostly in my shoulders, from the air they pumped in during the surgery. I don't believe I had any this time. It wasn't terribly hard to move around. They had me up on feet shortly after I woke up after surgery, and then they woke me up every two hours to walk a few laps in the hospital hallway. They recommended doing the same when I got home. I didn't do it that often but I was able to get around OK, albeit very slowly for a few days. Good luck!

    My experience… sleeved on 1/22/22

    Dont focus on the stalls. Being almost 7 weeks out I can tell you ill go 3-10 days no weight loss then bam 3-4 days of loss then stall again. My Dr and Nutritionist bot have me weigh and measure once a week. It helps to not weigh daily - advice I also got from many seasoned people here. Focus on eating what you should, drinking fluids, and exercise. It does come off. Mine is slow but ive lost 33 pounds so far and im a month to the day put monger than you.

    What @catwoman7 said. But to answer your question, I was sleeved 3+ years ago and: Sleeve Starting Weight: 235 lbs (2 weeks before surgery) Current Weight: 117.6 lbs this morning Date of Sleeve Surgery:  October 2018 P.S. I’m 5’2”
  9. That is a frustrating situation I'm certain. I haven't gotten that far yet as my EGD is next week. My doctor seems to think he can get a hernia repair approved, so if that were the case I'd only be on the hook for the extra work related to the RNY if I decided to do it.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

    I’m day 5 post op now. My surgery went well, it took 2.5 hours. I had water only on 2/2 and have been having water, soups and yoghurt since 4/2. Pain wise I’m okay only taken 2 paracetamol today but am quite swollen this evening. Good luck to any surgery buddies for the week ahead :)
  11. Hey everyone! Im new here and hoping to find some support and accountability in the gym and kitchen. Im 28 years old and work full time at a high school as an athletic trainer. I currently weight train/workout 6 days a week and run 4 (marathon training). Im coming off of a disney world vacation and struggling with being tired and lack of motivation. Id love to talk with anyone who wants an accountability partner and/or has similar lifestyle and goals 😅
  12. Hey everyone! I'm scheduled for my bypass on Feb 14. So far I've lost 8 lbs on the pre op diet and I'm on day 3 but was dieting pretty hard-core the week I got on my preop. lol it's going well but I get food anxiety about stupid stuff though like what if I ate too much lettuce and get kicked out of ketosis? I know it's so irrational and I've done keto and the nutrition/macro dance of anxiety in the past. I figure as long as I'm losing weight and eating less than 6 grams of carbs a day, my liver is hopefully shrinking. Anyway, I'm trying not to overthink things. That's been helping me so far. They say when you overthink you create problems that weren't there in the first place. Definitely feel like that applies to following a crash diet. Well, with surgery approaching I'll be relieved to not deal with this feeling of emptiness. This is probably going to be one the most challenging parts. I can't help but wonder though and I have terrible medical anxiety, what does it feel like when you wake up from surgery? And in the couple of days post op? Are you: Sore in your stomach? Can you feel your stomach and intestines? Is there a burning sensation? Are you zoned out on pain killers or you can go without them just fine? Do you get gas pain right away? Is it hard to move around? Just wanna know your experience after surgery, hospital and getting home. Thanks for the advice as usual. Love this community!     February 2022 Surgery Buddies

    That is very different. I’m in Iowa, USA and my instructions for the first two weeks is strictly liquid. Items that can fit through a straw and only 2 ounces at a time. So all day sipping either water or a protein drink is what I’m doing. This is for both the bypass and sleeve. It could be they do surgery a bit different and so it allows more to go through at a time. My list I was given says protein drinks, unsweetened applesauce, sugar free pudding or jello after protein goal for the day is met, light yogurt or light Greek yogurt, broth or cream soup, plain cream of wheat or V8 tomato juice. Again, only a quarter of a cup/2 ounces at a time. This will be for two weeks which I’m on day four post surgery. Wishing you all of the very best, I’m everything from excited to nervous, 😂, but will use this amazing tool for the rest of my life and my eating habits.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    I am not sure of monthly totals, but as of Friday I am down 58 lbs. My surgery was November 9th so feeling pretty good about this amount of loss in less than 3 months. I have had a couple of short stalls but mostly I am consistently losing 1/2 pound a day. I stick to mostly protein and then vegies as tolerated before I am full. I exercise 4x a week for about 30 mins, but also go up and down the stairs in my house about 10 times a day. 😁

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    All going well here thank you! Today I am OUT of Onederland and I just wanted to let you all know. Scale showed 99kg for the first time in a very long time. It feels really good. 🏆 I have lost 31lbs in 11.5 weeks since my op. Pretty much 2lbs a week since my long stall ended. I only have one issue and it's been the same since day 1 - getting enough fluids in. I rehydrate really well in the morning, but as soon as I start to eat I get pretty hungry and then an hour later want to eat again. If I eat when I feel hungry then I have virtually no time for drinking in between - I have to think about fluid intake every single day. Small price to pay and I'm sure it'll come with time. I am so happy to have had this surgery.

    Initial weight vs current weight

    Started pre-op diet at 276lbs. Surgery was cancelled for another 2 months but I kept calorie counting that whole time so in total I lost 25lbs pre-op in the end. Surgery weight 251 Date of sleeve 17 November 2021 Current weight 220 So that's 31lbs off in 11.5 weeks since surgery. 8lbs in the week of surgery then a long post-op stall that lasted over 3 weeks. I have really found a groove with my eating and am losing a steady 2lbs a week at the minute. I do drink some alcohol every weekend which I know is completely empty calories, but it's something I have chosen to do and factor in. If I stall again or once my rate of loss slows I'll probably stop it again! Hope that helps. I loved reading other people's stats pre-op and I still do really. 😍 Keep asking questions - it's a big decision, a lifelong commitment to being different, and there is such a lot of experience in this group you're absolutely right to use it.

    Surgeon's advice after vomiting

    I take three childrens chewable Multivitamins daily. I get the Equate brand due to it meeting the requirements from my office. They also recommended them. I also switched to sublingual B12 and D3 due to the pill absorption issue I was having. I would ask if there are alternative multivitamins you can take so you eliminate the throwing up issue. Then you don’t have to worry about this latest advice!

    Final Choice

    I like your way of thinking. My GERD disappeared with surgery. After I got covid (and I was vaccinated) I got gastritis in my stomach. The pain was unreal and nothing fixed it. Even with meds and the month of liquids preop when he took that part of my stomach off for the sleeve it was actually worse, the gastritis, with the pathology report. No known cause. Ive read covid can cause this. So im feeling a million times better since the sleeve no GERD im almost 7 weeks out. Best thing Ive done just to get rid of that horrible pain i had preop!

    Exercise post-op

    I am almost 8 weeks post surgery. Like you, I incorporate strength training and cardio every week. At the moment, I do cardio five days per week and I do strength training three days per week. One day per week, Tuesdays, I have a complete day of rest. Did I mention I love Tuesdays? It is my opinion that it is very difficult to build muscle while losing weight. To build muscle, your body needs the raw materials (food) for which to build muscle. While losing weight, your body has a calorie deficit...or in other words, a lack of food. Therefore, it is very difficult to build muscle while losing weight. Perhaps a good goal might be to maintain as much of the muscle you currently possess through strength training. As you lose weight, you will be losing fat and keeping lean muscle. And muscle burns way more calories than fat. Odd fact of the day: According to Harvard Health, adults lose 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after the age of 30. (This is the reason we get fatter as we get older even though we eat the same amount.) 🤔

  21. Hi Everyone! Im 11 weeks post-op tomorrow and have recently started regular workouts at home. Ive done personal training and dance in the past and am now mixing in strength, cardio and stretching into my routine. Hoping to get back to the flexibility i had a couple years ago! Id make sure to warm up first and stretch both before and after my workouts. But since the surgery i find im more sore for longer when i do my strength workouts! I also have found that i cant do as many reps! Is that normal? I did my last strength training on Thursday and its now Sunday and still sore! I used to be able to do 15 reps/ 3-4 sets but now can barely manage 5 reps!! I guess thats something ill have to work up to! Also, what does your routine look like now? Mine is pretty much based on what i used to do. Every second day I would focus on weights and focus on cardio the other days. But with how sore i still am after my last strength session im thinking of changing that up a bit? Any tips? Advice?
  22. Yes! I was thrilled to be out of the hospital, it was a horrible stay with poor nursing care due to the pandemic. However, when I came home, vomiting continued for weeks. Because I was not cooking, my family would get all types of carry-out that normally I would enjoy with them. So depressing. I missed the food and being with them to eat. When the vomiting stopped, and I was able to at least have a french fry, I felt that I was not being deprived, and my mood lightened. The eating plan became more natural, and not so regimented. To the original poster, a couple months have passed since your post, I hope you are feeling better both physically and mentally. 😀
  23. I had a hard time until i was out of the liquid stage. It was so hard for me because i was in liquid a month before surgery so i missed thanksgiving and had my surgery 12/22/21 I had to stay too because i was also throwing up. I got out Christmas Eve but they didnt want to release me even then until i told the Dr my 2 teenagers where home alone and I didnt want to have them alone on Christmas. But now, 6 + weeks out I am actually really in great spirits and have been since about day 10. I think everyone here are correct that its normal.
  24. Thank you everyone again for all the amazing feedback!! I have gone back to tracking all my food and found that that does help deter me from making bad decisions(not all the time but there is a definite downturn in bad decisions) when I have to input the calories/carbs that make me cringe on 1 piece of food/snack etc. I also realized the ridiculous amount of financial and emotional stress my dog is putting me through these last couple of months and for the next 3 or 4 has also affected me more than I realized(I stress eat and not good things). I have my annual with my PCP next week and am looking forward to a candid conversation about anxiety and ADD symptom management with hopes that getting my mental health back on track it will also help my mindset with the weight loss. I found an excess weight calcluator and I actually have lost 70% of my excess weight from my highest of 347lbs! So I am doing better than I thought. I am shooting for my surgeon's goal of 193 in June for my 18 month post op visit....one day and choice at a time!

    Pre-Op Tests

    Yeah this is all standard. I had all the blood tests done and had to get clearance for surgery from a psychologist, cardiologist (who had me wear a monitor for three days and did an echocardigram, stress test, and nuclear stress test), pulmonologist (did PFTs), and had an endoscopy. I think that's it. When I had my sleeve in 2016 I had to do a sleep study but didn't need to do another one in 2021 for the bypass.
