Here I grow Again
FancyChristine15 replied to Aaron L. Shaw's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You definitely have the right attitude. I'm glad that you are doing something before the weight gain gets out of hand, which is what I wish that I would have done! Congrats on that! You've got this! -
So i’m a week post-op and today i weighed myself and gained four pounds. I’ve been sticking to my liquids and required protein but have noticed bloating so could this be the cause? I’ve also been working out with some very VERY light moderate weight lifting. Was wondering if this is normal, either way i took the batteries out of my scale because i don’t want to get obsessed with my numbers or discouraged. On another note i’ve noticed my emotions have been all over the place since surgery. Sometimes I’ll get angry and today i’ve just been crying for no reason. Is this common after surgery? Or could it be the fact that I was very emotionally dependent on food so now I’m forced to let it out one way or another. Would a counselor or therapist be good to cope with Post surgery emotions?

First time experiencing unusual weight gain since WLS
omrhsn posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. I noticed that my weight has started going up like crazy over the past four days. I was 76.5 kg on 26 April 2023 and I weighed 80.2 Kg this morning (30 April 2023). I usually weigh myself after going to the toilet in the morning, around the same time, before eating or drinking anything and wearing only my "birthday suit". Gaining 3.7 kg over 3 days is definitely unusual and alarming. This afternoon I also noticed that my feet were swollen and felt a bit numb. Then I remembered that I've been eating a lot of pickles that my wife made for me. I read somewhere that there is a strong connection between increased dietary salt intake and weight gain due to water retention but the studies were all inconclusive. The recommendations were to just drink a lot of water, exercise and wait it out. Anyone experienced a similar situation and how long did it take to get back on track? It is frustrating that I'm experiencing this while I'm only 6 kg from my goal weight. -
I am just curious if there are any people out there that have been banded and lost the weight, but then gained it back even though they were still banded? Is it common for someones stomach to strech that much?

Smokers, Short Of Breathe Or Those With Arthritis -- The Reality Of Exercising And Weight Loss With The Sleeve
imgonnaloseit! posted a topic in Fitness & Exercise
Hi all Looking for advice on exercise. I see so many people saying they exercise 4, 5 or 6 days a week for 60 minutes. I find it hard to fathom that after being overweight and sitting on our asses for years or decades - boop!!,... you have sleeve surgery and now want to exercise like Jack Lalane.... well, it's hard to believe. Here is my reality. I smoked 2 to 2 1/2 packs of cigarettes for 42 years. I quit 14 weeks ago with the assistance of Chantix. I quit so I would be eligible for WLS. I have been obese for most of my adult life. I have never, let me repeat that, NEVER, been into exercising per say. I loved playing sports, softball, volleyball, basketball, frisbee, swimming, etc but sit-ups, push-ups, crunches, jumping rope, etc. was not for me. As I got older and fatter, and it was harder to breathe and move (weight gain, smoking and now arthritis in my knees, hips and back) even the sports I loved to play became too much for me to be physically able to do. I mean, my weight and arthritis can make it difficult to walk thru a flea market or on the beach without putting me in excruciating pain for a day or two. On top of that Aleve is the what the orthopedic doctor has told me to take for the arthritis (and it is the only thing that helps). I would love to hear from the "older folks" that have arthritis or perhaps made the bad choice to smoke for 40 some-odd years or their others whose weight makes them short of breath... please how does the sleeve work for you and just what do you do for exercise and how often. I mean I would love to be able to able to play volleyball or softball or basketball but, seriously, is that a reality for me? And the fact that I can't do much (at least 'til I lose the first 40 or 50 lbs) physically - will that be discouraging mentally/emotionally for me because of lack of weight loss? I am pre-surgery and still struggling with the question of bypass or sleeve. I would prefer the sleeve but want to be REAL about the results I should expect -- will I be able to lose the 120 lbs I need to lose with the sleeve? -
Just ate a Wendy's cheeseburger!
SeriouslyChange replied to fancynancy's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm not condemning the cheeseburger, but I'm just saying: why get sleeved in what I am assuming is January only to consume a 300-500 calorie burger in one sitting? Why would you just not eat 1/3 or even 1/2. I'm not perfect, I drink juice, eat ice cream, munch on crackers I eat Cheetos, and have had Chinese food. But I also limit myself to just a taste. I'm 100+ pounds lighter and I will never allow myself to eat my way back up the scale. Call me scared of weight gain if you must The sleeve is a lifestyle change. It alone will not make you thin. You also must change your thoughts and approach to food. It is hard, but that's part of the journey. -
1.5 pounds is not too shabby for a weeklong vacation. Just think of how much u would've gained had u not been sleeved. I have found that little weight gains come off quickly once I focus on eating right, getting my Water, and working out. It'll come off don't worry. Please don't let a 1.5 gain cloud over the greatness of a cruise. Sent from my iPhone using VST

Trying to get used to my Lap-Band
ddsweighin228 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow this takes some getting used to, had my first fill on May 2nd had no restrictions now all of a sudden today I'm having restriction, for the last couple of weeks I have been at a plateau with my weight gain one pound lose 1 pound I am just hoping that I am finally getting past bandster hell -
Well, today I saw the Endo, but it didn't go quite how I would have liked. Becaue I don't have the strechmarks, and because I work out I don't have the thin arms and legs, he doesn't think I have cushings, but he ordered the 24 hour urine test and three other tests. (my husband has my PDA with that information). I do know they are testing my testosterone because of the increased body hair, the increased facial hair (6 laser hair removal treatments and it is all growing back) and the male patterned baldnes, he thinks I might have something wrong, like a masculinizing tumor, but probably not cushings. He wasn't interested in my sudden and unexplained weight gains, my fatigue, or my inability to lose weight. I think the man weighs 150 soaking wet. He's going to send me to a doctor that specializes in metabolic issues, although she mostly sees professional atheletes. He kept refering to me being obese (no kidding) and thinks that is why I'm having all the problems. He thinks I should work harder at losing weight. (hello! I had WLS for crying out loud, I work out, and I've managed to lose 15 pounds net since April. I'm not terribly optimistic, but he didn't dismiss me altogether either. He did tell me to stop taking the thyroid medication. He looked at my test results from Jan and couldn't believe the other doctor put me on thyroid medication. This doesn't mean that I don't have Cushing's, it just means that I won't know until after I get the test results back from the lab, and until I finish peeing in a bottle for 24 hours. Oh joy that one... I just sort of thought that after reading all that I've been able to read about Cushing's that some of the major symptoms that I have would have been looked at, and not brushed aside. He wasn't interested in my journals, my before and now pix to see the difference and I was disapointed at that. The Cushings's board said to bring all that stuff, and he didn't even want to see any of it.

When we first got married I was at 174. Then I had babies and several surgeries so my weight gain started. I has cheated on me before so I would not be surprised if he did again. Thank you everyone for the support. I really don't have anyone to stay with. I can do this. It will be hard but I can do this.. If he wants to leave after I loose my weight I really don't think I am going to stop him. Like someone said he is controlling. Thank you again Sent from my N9518 using the BariatricPal App

I put on 2 pounds and i'm so upset with myself. I took my butt to Shapes today and worked out for 45 minutes. I thought going back to work would help me not think of food all the time and help lose weight. I called and moved up my first fill to the begining of April instead of the end of April. I hope that helps.

Weight loss surgery on Public Radio this morning
samuelsmom replied to Engteacher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@VSGAnn2014 I actually found this article very encouraging. Just think, this lady had tremendous success. Chances are, considering her pre-op weight and age, she would not be alive today if she had not had surgery. And she kept the vast majority of it off for a long time. And then, after a relatively modest weight gain she took action! I view this like a car or appliance-- sometimes things need a little tightening! -
:welcomeB: It sounds like you've come to the right place!! Pull up a chair and get comfy -- there is all the support you need right here. Some even say it's better than their local (face time) support groups! Don't feel so bad about your weight gain. Just dust yourself off and start again. Going to the gym is a huge step in the right direction!!! Good for you!!:clap2:

It is now 3 years later........I lost what i wanted to lose, 65 pounds.......sometimes I gain a few but it is so easy now to just give up that ice cream and get right back on track. In my "other" life that 65 pounds would have ca me right back as soon as i over ate, THERE IS NO OVEREATING NOW......just bad choices !! That 1/2 pound of pasta that used to fill me up is now less than a cup and i remain full for the rest of the evening. I no longer look for a snack late at night. You will also find there will be some foods you canot tolerate. I am very lucky because those for me are the things that i always struggled to give up on other diets and believe me you LOSE the desire for these foods......for example I was a beef eater, loved it and now it does not agree with me and I no longer want it.......AMAZING !!! Doesn't faze me to feed my family a roast and then sit down and eat the potato and veggies and a salad !! In the past that would have never happend because I didn't have the will power to have a little piece or as always I would think "i will have it tonight and start my diet tomorrow !!" When you find you are eating too much you just get a fill and you are right back where you started !!I have friends who had the by-pass around the time I had my band, they are now dieting big time because of weight gain, i just watch what I eat for a few days and the weight starts to drop again........but it is a TOOL........soda, ice cream, puddings, anything liquid goes through the band and you do not fill full..dangerous foods because there is nothing to keep these things from making you gain weight. The band is the best thing i have ever done for myself and the best way to lose weight and keep it off but YOU have to work with it................it is so very worth having done !!! Good Luck !

My Revision Story
lexiemia replied to factoryline's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I too have a lap band. My band slipped last year and I am having it removed and converted to a sleeve. I have never regretted having my band even though I am having problems with it now. My only regret is I didn't make myself maintain my weight loss when all the saline had to be removed from my band so next week I begin this journey all over again. I am so afraid of weight gain again once I get the weight back off with the sleeve. I am wondering should I have went for the bypass? -
Since you are tracking everything you should be able to pinpoint when the weight gain began and what you were eating/doing when it happened. Sometimes things change once we transition from losing to maintenance and also when other life events happen I personally would use the information that I had been compiling to reverse engineer the problem. Hope you can find a solution soon 💙

From what I understand, weight gain will happen. Its important though to see what the cause is and correct it.

Xann, Hang in there girl, a lot of us have been in the same boat, here take my life jacket for a while. I have dealt with a lot of depression since my banding. I try and remember that we all started at different weights so we are gonna lose differently as well. Some of us are turles and some are rabbits, but look on the bright side, you are lossing, yes it is slow, but lossing, its a blessing. My first visit back to the doctor I had gained 10 lbs back from the weight I had lost during my all liquids stage. This is a life time journey so dont be so hard on yourself, I think to myself " I didnt get this heavy over night and I am not going to lose it over night". I believe your period has something to do with weight gain, I know I bloat something awful, so Water weight will get to you. Drink more water, sounds crazy but it helps flushes the extra water away. We all are here if you need us, vent, cry or even cuss....you're not alone!

Should I try a diet one more time? Did anyone else feel this way?
Lori Ann replied to kims's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, You know, if our way worked to start with, we wouldn't have even thought about having a band. I have had to accept that my way has never worked, and if it did, it was only short term to once again be followed with more weight gain. I am 46 years old and at times I have had great will power to lose weight, but at the times when I was "emotional" eating, there was nothing there to stop me or even make me think twice about it.....then as you know it's too late. With the band as a absolutely wonderful tool, when I do have those times when I want to "emotionally" eat, the band makes me think twice, I get uncomfortable over eating and it stops me.....gives me time to think, hurts if I overeat, etc., etc., etc. There has always been a glimour of hope that I will eat normal again on my own......well I am here to tell you that is HOGWASH! My 25 years of experience show me that.....I was banded on May 24th and am down 60 lbs......I feel the best I have ever felt in my life. I no longer take meds for High Blood Pressure and I am off ALL diabetic medicine....I take no meds anymore. This is not to say my life is perfect, but the band has become my tool and my assistant when it comes to eating. I have had to admit I am powerless of food and my life was totally unmanageable until I got my band. I LOVE IT!! Also, please benefit from the experience of all the old time banders on this site.....their experience is phenominal and sooo valuable......they are our ANGELS! -
I've had a mirena for a year. No weight gain from it

Where are the apple shapes?!
Djstola replied to NewAshes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm an apple too. Lost in my boobs first and have one less chin now. Surgery May 8th down 32lbs. I used to wear my hair really short, but weight gain made me look like a bowling pin! Will cut my hair when I lose the weight. -
I was banded a week before you and have not lost nearly as much weight - you are doing a great job. Weight gain might just be fluid retention - a few extra carbs over the weekend or maybe some annoying hormones? Perhaps give it another week and see if things go back to normal - you might get a nice surprise and a sudden big drop next time.

I was wondering if gaining back a couple pounds is an indication that I may need an adjustment. My last adjustment was in July, I went in August but the doctor didn't give me a fill. I am scheduled for another fill on the 25th of this month. Over this Labor Day weekend I did eat differently than I normally eat. Aside from my normal Breakfast and lunch the following is what I had for supper. For example; I went to a friends house on Saturday for dinner. She served Vietmanese food. Spicy shrimp with rice and Pho (a Soup mainly made out of chicken broth, bean sprouts, and rice noodles) a bite of eggplant and literally a bite of an ice cream pie. (I might mention non of it was measured except for the dessert) Sunday my step daughter was over for her birthday, I prepared bbq baby back ribs, shells and cheese, corn on the cob, biscuits and of course birthday cake. I however, had 3 baby back ribs, 1/2 ear of corn with butter spray, and 1/2 of a biscuit, with again literally one bite of cake. Monday I was back on track eating what I normally eat and measuring portions exact. I did exercise this weekend once, 70 minutes of uphill walking (I live in the mountains). Anyhow with what I have eaten over the weekend do you think maybe that is why I had gained some weight back?
