  1. Got another technical question. How can you change your tagline...the phrase that appears below your user name on your profile? I joined this forum as "Natasha" back in 2008 with the tagline "Post Op Lapband Newbie" I just changed my Display name to Nologoz...but am unable to change the tagline. I want to change it because I no longer have a lap band. It has been revised to RnY. Is there a way to change or delete the old tagline? ................................................................................................................................................................. EDIT: OK.......never mind. Somehow the tagline just defaulted to "Senior Member". I dunno how or why....just glad it's fixed...ask and you shall receive. Many thanks to the gods of the internet.
  2. Clearly, Im an infrequent visitor to the site! but, thank you for the information. Id love to hear how you are getting on since the revision of the revision! I am still waiting on my surgery date, but have finally decided on the bypass option. Your comments really helped. (also my surgeon, after telling me it was my choice, told me it would have to be bypass anyway, because of the scarring from the band!) I have my final appt on the 22nd October, and have been pencilled in for a mid November surgery date. Its been over a year since they removed the band, and +20kg later, Im really looking forward to moving on. Unlike my first two surgeries, recovery from the bypass was very hard for me. I ended up with pneumonia in both lungs and the antibiotics made me super sick. I was miserable but thankfully after the first month all was well. I'm now almost 6 months out and doing great ! I've lost almost all the weight I wanted too, I was low BMI to begin with (189 day of surgery) and I'm now around 155-158 depending on the day. I would like to be about 10lbs less but I'm pretty happy where I am too. I had the Mini bypass so my bypass is actually almost 9', the only complaint or problem I have is that nothing stays with me long and I'm in the bathroom A LOT! Sometimes 10x a day I would say and it's very unpleasant lets just say without too much detail. I do stress about this at work and anytime I'm away from home unfortunately. Thankfully for the most part it has worked out that I tend to go mostly evenings and overnight and early morning but there have definitely been a few emergencies in the middle of the day as well. Other than that which is honestly more than I even expected, things are great! I eat whatever I want, yes I dump on anything too sweet or too fatty so I do avoid some things again especially if I'm away from home. Also, I think it's important to say I really have very little actual restriction, I can eat what I would consider a "normal" portion size of most things though occasionally I still get stuck just like I did with my band which is weird and doesn't happen often. Any specific questions i would be happy to try to answer.
  3. Hey Susan, I had my lapband for 8 years. Started having trouble the last 3 years. I finally got up the courage to go back to the doctor in May this year. Turned out the band was too tight and I had a dilated esophagus. My doctor unfilled the band on my first appointment and told me I needed to wait 30 days to see if the swelling would go down. He told me if the esophagus returned to normal in 30 days that I could have revision surgery right away. Everything moved very quickly. The esophagus returned to normal and I ended up having revision surgery by the end of July. The lapband came out, a hernia was fixed, and the RnY was performed all at the same time. There was some swelling and scarring where the lapband was attached, but otherwise the surgery went well. The surgery took about 3 hours. I was in the hospital for 3 days. The surgery was more difficult to recover from than the lapband...mainly due to the length of time I was under. Gas pain was the main issue that caused me discomfort. It's been 2 1/2 months since the revision and I feel great. I've had no complications and it's way easier to eat healthy now.

  5. Hey Marieze, I just had revision surgery from Lapband to RnY about 2 1/2 months ago. My experience so far is that the physical stomach hunger is greatly reduced. That being said...I have been surprised at the amount of Emotional and Mental Hunger that still affects me. I am an overeater because I turned to food at an early age as a way to cope with childhood trauma. By the time I was an adult, compulsive overeating was habitual. My eyes still crave certain foods. My nose is temped when I encounter certain smells. My mouth sometimes desperately wants to taste what it shouldn't have. My mind is constantly trying to rationalize why it's ok to eat pretzels and carbs that are not on my diet. My heart still wants to eat because it used to be the way I would "treat" myslef when I was feeling pain and discomfort. My point is that there are many different types of hunger. The surgery only supresses the physical. The good news is that the reduction of physical hunger makes it so much easier to fight off the other urges. But I have to say that the best thing about the surgery is that the lapband is gone. No more coughing all night long No more hicupping all day No more resorting to slider foods No more acid reflux No more intolerance of healthy food So far RnY is WAY better than the Lapband...but for me....I still need to put in a lot of effort to stay on track.
  6. Well I did it! After 14 years with the band almost to the day, I had the band removed, a hernia repaired, and the sleeve on October 1st. The first few days were rough due to pain but today I am two weeks out, back at work, and feeling pretty good. I am still on full liquids and start pureed foods tomorrow. I am glad to have the revision behind me and look forward to life with the sleeve
  7. I signed up to cycle this Saturday. Last year my lapband sipped while doing a marathon. I am concerned it may slip again but I really want to do this before my revision to sleeve. Any advice or suggestions are welcome, I know I am a newbie on site and do not know a lot of folks but I am asking for some input from anybody who reads this. Thanks

    Band to Bypass Fears

@@HELLCATT81, it's not a coincidence that so many people have to have revision surgeries. I understand what you are saying and the most I lost was about 30 pounds with the band including the pre-op diet. All I could tolerate eventually was slider foods and when I had breads or anything solid I would vomit. With fills I would vomit. I had delayed gastric emptying and pain that was discounted by my lap band surgeon. I wanted to make it work so it took a while to decide on RNY. Enough was enough when I would just drink water or juice at work and vomit intensely. This suffering lasted a year and half. My new surgeon who did the RNY said "you gave it the good old try" it didn't work for you. He let me know it wasn't my fault, I needed to hear that. Just those words made me want to not only be successful at this for God, me but also my surgical team. I will be a year post-op next week and even though it takes work, determination, emotional changes, etc. I wouldn't change a thing. The forums are filled with people who have maintained their weight loss as well. Go get em and congratulations on your RNY.

    Anyone had surgery with SmartShape?

I had my lap band at smart shape in Vancouver. I had surgery in June and was able to lose 35lbs pretty quickly without a fill, I just had my first fill last week. I have found the aftercare to be good. There are seminars online to help, there are nurses and a dietician you can email at any time. The slightly annoying part is that everything has to go through the center in Ontario before you can make an appointment for fills. Also the online classes are in eastern time so some of them are at 6 or 7 am our time. I know we are covered for all fills for 5 years. If something goes wrong with the band and it needs to come out I know that MSP covers that. But I never really asked out if I need a revision if they fix it. I guess I assume if anything happens within 5 years they will fix it.

Nov 2013 Sleevers Progress So Far...

Feeling like a total failure. That honeymoon phase ended and I wish I'd never told anyone I had gastric sleeve. I still feel restriction with proteins, but exercise is still hard for me to grasp. I initially lost 57 pounds. Gained 20. My lowest weight was 199. I'm tall so that helps, but I'm nowhere near goal. Some days I wonder if I should consider revision to bypass. I have no will power and the liquids/puddings/sweets go down far too easily. THIS MSQUEEN IS SAD.

    Band to Bypass Fears

Hey HCatt, Thanks for sharing your story. I can relate as my story is very similar. I know you are scared to try again, because you feel like you failed the lapband. The truth of the matter is that the lapband is not very successful for people with high BMI's. A lot of bariatric doctors wont even perform the surgery anymore. I just had revision from Lapband to RnY about 2 1/2 months ago. I have already lost 50 lbs (including one month pre op diet). I still have a long way to go, but so far I am very happy with my decision to revise. I'm not gonna lie. It has not been easy. I am still tempted to eat more than I should. My second month of weight loss was only 10 lbs because I was eating 3 healthy meals and not exercising. (I have arthritis of the knee and am waiting to loose more before putting too much strain on it). After my 2nd post op doctors visit, I was told I needed to eat only 2 meals max per day and to substitute breakfast with a Protein drink. I'm following his advise and guess what...the weight is coming off again. My point in all this is to say that this surgery still requires a lot of hard work and willpower....but it's a heck of a lot easier than the lapband. I no longer have GERD, coughing at night, hiccups all day, trouble swallowing anything healthy...etc, etc. RnY is way easier. Weight regain can happen with RnY. I'm terrified it will happen to me as well...which is why I now see a therapist weekly and attend OA meetings once a week. My stomach hunger is almost non existant right now, but the mental and emotional hunger are still there. Obesity is a lifelong battle (with or without surgery). I chose revision surgery to increase my odds of winning the war against this disease. You must remember that taking no action will inevitable lead to a life in a wheelchair. Once you are immoble the desease usually wins. Weather you chose to revise or diet on your own...I wish you the best of luck! But whatever you choose...don't give up the fight! Thanks! I am definitely having rny. I'm scheduled for surgery next month!!! I'm excited and determined. I KNOW I WILL SUCCEED! I have a YouTube if you wanna follow me and see my journey. Let me know if you have one too... Mine is "Holly's Band to gastric bypass journey". Thanks for the encouragement it really helps!

    Band to Bypass Fears

Wow, its been a long time since I've logged into this site. I had Lap Band surgery in June of 2009, Lost close to 100lbs and was 15 pounds from goal. The band slipped so I had a revision done, and after that the band was never the same. I couldn't sleep at night the gerd was so painfull. My band was removed in 2011 and I instantly felt better. I've since gained almost all the weight back over the past 4 years and am now completely miserable! I signed up yesterday for an informational meeting at a new center closer to my home and hope that the process doesn't take too long as know that I've finally made up my mind that I want the bypass surgery I want it done as soon as possible! I so wish that I had gone with the bypass surgery to begin with!!

  20. After the "Weight Loss" stage you pass into the "Maintenance" stage. In this stage, the goals and rules change slightly. I have put together a short article on the second stage that may be of some help. It is available here http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf Also I may revise this webpage in the next few weeks that will even give some more ideas. So you might check back on the link.
  21. I have the band and I'm getting ready to have a revision to the sleeve due to issues with the band. My insurance won't cover anything bariatric related so I'm looking at going to Mexico. Anyone recommend a good surgeon or have good advice for me? Thanks.

    Band Slipped to Sleeve

I had band to sleeve revision in May. Complications had just started with my esophagus caused by the lapband. Thus far, revision is the best decision I have made. The only downfall for me now is that weight loss has been extremely slow for me with the sleeve. I thought it would be quicker, however, with the lapband my weight loss had stalled the last year that I had it. I'm perfectly ok with this. The benefits with sleeve are far better. No regrets here. jake
