  1. @@M. Julia ... I asked my shrink that about a year ago and posted about it. Here's a copy of that post: My shrink works with a number of bariatric patients and has seen many people go through this process. Toward the end of yesterday's session, I asked: "What issues do you see patients struggling with who regain weight? And by that I don't mean that they're eating too much. I'm really asking what's going on inside them that leads them to regain?" After thinking a moment, he said: "What I mostly see is that they're struggling to find new reasons and new motivations to focus on their weight and fitness. "After they hit their goal weights, many of the rewards they got while losing weight go away. They're no longer motivated by seeing the scale move down. After a while, their family and friends get used to what they look like and stop commenting on their weight loss or weight. Even people who were their strongest supporters during the weight loss phase no longer offer supportive comments. And when this positive reinforcement disappears, that has a negative effect on the patients. "So then they must find new goals and new motivations to maintain their weight and to be fit. And for some folks that's not easy." So that's one shrink's brief observations about the cause of WLS patients' weight regain. However, I'm sure that's not the end of our conversation.

I know! It would be nice if they had a bariatric feature!! But okay I'll just try to double check the stats and see how I'm doing. I'd rather overestimate than underestimate anyway. Thank you for your insight!!

Oh no! sorry to hear that. I'm kind of expecting the same thing, so I laid in a supply of bone broth and unflavored protein powder, as well as bariatric pal soups and hot chocolate. Hopefully the variety will keep me going. 2 weeks on a liquid diet is a long time.
  4. I actually made my own. I kept premier around the house, but I found them very heavy after surgery. I will do something like unsweetened vanilla almond milk, PBFit powder, vanilla protein powder and sugar free grape jam. I have several different ones. I also drank a lot of Kettle Fire Bone Broth. I went crazy getting three bariatric cookbooks and pinning tons of recipes on pinterest but I feel I was super ready. I started purees yesterday and started with egg salad, no problem. Today I am making a bunch of mini muffin ricotta bakes and going to freeze the ones I don't eat today.

update re my rny post-op endoscopy: so the goal was for the endoscopy surgeon to send a scope into my new tummy pouch and widen the passageways if they were too tight. good news: my tummy pouch was fine. bad news: i have about 2 cm of very severe narrowing along the roux limb about ten cm below my stomach pouch. basically only clear liquids can get through. the doctor said it looks like my large intestine is severely squishing the connection from of small intestine that moved up to join with my stomach pouch. i don’t know what the next steps are yet. i am supposed to follow up with my bariatric surgeon and i sent her a portal message this afternoon when i recovered from anesthesia to schedule a follow up. i am happy to know that i haven’t been doing anything wrong or progressing my foods too quickly, etc. i’m very hopeful that this will be a safe fix. i imagine i might need another laparoscopic surgery to move or reposition my guts, but i have no idea. o.O

Surgery set for Sept 9!!! I’m working on stocking up on vitamins now. My doc recommends Bariatric Advantage brand?? Anyone have feedback on this?
  7. VSG Surgery in scheduled for Sept 1, 2022. 4 years ago I started having a lot of gastric problems. Random and often vomiting, severe diarrhea, heartburn, indigestion, etc. I had 2 colonoscopies and 2 endoscopes. Finally, diagnosed with gastritis and microscopic colitis but no reasons why those happened. I took lots of different meds, changed when and what I ate, etc. Nothing worked. It was so bad I was afraid to even leave my house at times. I went to a bariatric/general surgeon about a VSG. He ended up being just who I needed to help solve my huge gastric problem. At first, he said I would probably need to get a bypass instead of the VSG because he thought I may have had GERD/reflux. He sent me for another endoscope and discovered from the last endoscope (a year before) I had newly developed a hiatal hernia, stomach ulcers, and deformed pyloric. Did some more tests and found my stomach acid was about 5 times too much. My pancreas was not able to produce enough of the necessary stuff to neutralize the stomach acid traveling through the intestines, which in turned cause the gastritis and severe diarrhea. The bypass leaves a still somewhat function stomach so I will get VSG instead since it removes a large portion of the acid producing fundus. I will also get a repair for the hiatal hernia and pyloric. I am so thankful to my doctor for finding my gastric problems and explaining to me in a way I could understand. AND lose the weight, too! I ended up not having GERD/reflux at all, even I develop due to the VSG, I think I can handle it! Thanks for listening to my story!

    December 2018 Sleevers!

My surgery was 12/26/2018 . I have also experienced a stall since advancing from liquid diet to soft/puree however have noticed my clothes fitting looser so I don't think it is all about the scale? I have seen post where people can't get in past 400 calories and am wondering how that can be? I have to drink a minimum of 2 protein drinks a day and the Bariatric Advantage powder (because these have 200% of DV vitamin requirements needed) itself is 150 calories along with 80 calories for the fat free milk (Mootopia) I mix it in with so that's 230 for each shake and a total of 430 along with all the required vitamins & supplements that total 120 calories just for those alone. So for me to get the minimum required vitamins and proteins ( which I will make sure I do per less chance of loosing hair and other problems with deficiencies) that's 580 calories by itself. Throw some food in there and it's easy to get almost 800 or more calories in a day. I don't always walk like I should per bad weather and I think if I would remain consistent here it would help me get out of this stall. I am also diligent with drinking a minimum of 64 ozs of water a day and many times go beyond this. I am not having much trouble keeping any food down but usually find that I can only eat about a 1/4th cup amount of food. I haven't pushed much beyond this unless it's applesauce or yogurt. I am still trying to figure out what all the grumbles and noises my digestive system is all about? Not sure what hunger pains feel like or if it is just digestive unease? It is like me and my body are getting reacquainted and I am forced to now listen to it more and decipher what is actually going on?

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Are you guys sure you are stalled? The scale is just a convenient tool for judging progress since water weight, time of the month etc. can greatly effect your weight on the scale. You'd be much better of combining your weigh ins with body measurements (hips, thighs, waist, chest) and body fat percentage (either with a bio-impedence scale or get an omicron handheld body fat monitor [preferable]). If I was just going by what the scale said, I would think I am in the world's longest bariatric stall. I have only lost 7 pounds in the last 8 week, but I lost 3.5" off my waist, 1.5" off my chest and my body fat is down 18% since surgery (on 12/17). None of that shows up on the scale, but this is more important than what the scale says. If you're losing muscle mass, what good is the weight loss. OP, if you aren't getting exercise daily and you are straying from your diet plan---now is the time to get back on track. The surgery isn't going to get you to onederland on its own.

    October 2023 surgery buddies

4 days post-op and feeling good. Walked a MILE today! Stopped to sit down very briefly halfway through and paused to stretch a couple of times. It took me almost 24 minutes, but I did it! My doctor allows sugar-free low carb Greek yogurt and sugar free nonfat pudding during this initial liquid diet stage. Today, I put sugar-free PBFit powder in vanilla Oikos Greek yogurt and it was amazing. I could not eat the whole container, but it's a 5.3 ounce container, so that makes sense! I am also enjoying the bariatric chicken soups for a little variety away from all the sweet flavors.

Multivitamins, try Barimelts. Bariatric advantage orange is not that great. Well it is better if you don’t chew and just let it slowly dissolve. My dr did advise can use Flintstone as well. Bariatric Advantage calcium chews are good but later I will switch to the CVS brand after I heal up and see how things are tolerated. Barimelts Vd3. B12. Biotin. Premier protein. Coffee one is not good, it has caffeine. Want to avoid caffeine after surgery. Try premier protein cake batter, peanut butter cup, Carmel, rootbeer is okay. I hear pumpkin spice was good. muscle milk zero sugar vanilla,Chocolate and strawberry (they are less sweet than premier vanilla chocolate and strawberry) Also use bariatric Advantage fiber. Vital proteins non flavor. Also you can sugar free sauces G Hughes sugar feee sauce, skinny girl dressing, and Jordan’s skinny syrups are good as well. I like use the syrups in the shakes. Like a mocha premiers chocolate shake, or I can caramel. Or to a Carmel shake I can add vanilla syrup. Also syrups are good in black decaf coffee with 1 pack if stevia. Light cheese string, i buy the Walmart brand but I think it taste better at room temperature Just know after surgery, your hormones will change and so will your taste buds.

    October Surgeries!!

I am scheduled for October 19th. On October 6th I start another pre-opt diet. I have been doing a pre-opt diet since July with two bariatric shakes a day and one meal usually at dinner. I have limited my fat intake. Word of warning: I went for a lapband three years ago, woke up in recovery without the band. The doctor said my liver was too large. It took three years to get over that. So I have been more careful about how I'm eating before surgery.

Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?

@@tkauhi Wow! That's so absurd!! It really makes me mad that when there is such an abundance of information out there, and it's relatively inexpensive to provide, that health care professionals don't do it! Shame on them, not the patients. Even if it cuts into his bottom line, he is OBLIGATED. Also, he could just refer you and let you decide and pay for it. I went to a bariatric center of excellence, and they did a good job of instruction. However, my insurance (that paid for almost everything) didn't pay for one of the dietitian meetings they required, so I had to pay out of pocket for it. The docs office gave me a break, and only charged $30 for it. So, you should never feel bad for seeking information - that's way different than a question like "I had surgery last week, and I ate a hamburger - Did I do any damage?". I think those are the questions that get irritating after a while.
  16. Has anyone here had a gastric sleeve and also has Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)? I just need to know that someone else safely had it done and didn't have a major multi-systemic reaction to the surgery or in post-op. I'm prone to anaphylaxis but I've had other surgeries (knees and shoulder) since diagnosis and with my surgical team being cautious I made it through surgery without having a major reaction. I previously had a consult with a bariatric surgeon and she said she wouldn't touch me; that it was too risky. But that was maybe three years ago and I'm definitely more stable now than I was then. My pain doctor wants me to get a second opinion so I'm going to meeting with a bariatric surgeon in a few weeks and also meeting with my mast cell doctor. I was just hoping that someone who it has experience with it could reassure me that it can be done safely. Concerns I have: - my diet already has to be restrictive because of the MCAS. I worry about getting enough protein in when I have to avoid tree nuts and all meat products. I can have milk (lactose free) and eggs. - I read that my meds have to be crushed or split post-surgery. Is that for forever? I have some capsules that I take that can't be crushed or broken. I also have liquid medication I take that gets diluted I'm about a cup of water. I use that water to take all of my pills, and there's a fair amount of pills. - exercise is an issue for me. I've anaphylaxed during an easy yoga class before. I've built up to be able to do seven to ten minutes on a seated elliptical or seated stepper. But I'm not going to be running any 5ks anytime soon. Is it still an effective surgery if my workout options afterwards are extremely limited because of my MCAS? - if I'm on meds that have caused weight gain for me, is it possible to still lose weight while being on the med? I can't safely go off of the meds unfortunately. I think I'm just scared to get my hopes up that this surgery could be a safe and effective tool to help me lose weight. I'm 5'4 and 400 lbs. I need help. The likelihood that my surgeon will be familiar with or educated in mast cell diseases is really low and I know that I'll have to do a lot of advocating for myself. If you've made it this far thank you for listening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  17. Hello Waterlily, Thanks. I was hoping things would get better once I am eating more solid foods. I am not trying to get stuffed. I started measuring my food again today, so hopefully I will do better soon. I was hungry all day, but I guess that is normal and not too bad of a price to pay for future weight loss and a healthier life. Can't wait until I get off of the mushies. It's just so frustrating to watch your calorie count stay very low, exercise and stay active everyday and watch the scale go up. Especially after getting such a life changing surgery. I guess I will have to learn to be more patient, although I don't know that I will be able to make it 3 more months to get filled. Maybe things will be better in a week or two and I will be like others who didn't need the fill right away. Just stressed and dissapointed at this point. Earlier in the week was hard. I had to meet with the nutriounist along with others who had bariatric surgery the same week as I did and they were all bypass patients complaing about being stuffed and bragging about losing a ton of weight already. Thanks everyone, Cheryl

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

Even in the best intentioned and most desired surgeries there is a thread of OMG WTF did I just do to ME? Your body is starting it's healing but you're also suffering from a wounded spirit and your world🌏 has been rocked and is quaking on its foundations. THIS IS A SHOCK! Things do get better, says the woman with a 11 week stomal stricture, but TRULY THEY DO, reach out to your bariatric team, there are people there who can help. And come on here, we too had Gloomy Tuesdays, Why did I do This Wednesdays even F*** It Fridays, we've pulled up our bootstraps, gritted our teeth and made it through. Sometimes even bariatric consouling helps.

    ❤ APRIL 2019 CHALLENGE❤

Somebody (raise your hand if it was you!) suggested a book in one of the threads The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery, Second Edition https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054RXXS0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_0IGPCbK8PMAS3 It is really hammering home just how important exercise is for our success post op. For some reason it struck a chord even though I’ve read or heard most of it before. Good luck today everyone and kudos to everyone who’s already gotten in their workout 💪🏻🔥🏃‍♀️🏆

    March Bandsters: MASTER THREAD

Christine, that MD is a (f-word idiot)! If he doesn't understand the lap band, what else doesn't he understand? Is he up to date on blood pressure management? Does he understand how to care for a diabetic? You don't want him for a doctor. Get out ASAP. Do you know any bandsters in your area? Why not post in the NY State local bandster forum? Maybe someone near you would know a bariatric-friendly GP. But seriously, drop the zero, and get with uh ANYONE ELSE!
