  1. I had surgery 10/18/21 and remember thinking a lot initially about this, like ok should I be drinking all the time when not within 30 minutes of eating???? You develop a routine and it works. Like others suggested, maybe changing one thing at a time like drinking more or eating at regular intervals. My surgeon said I wasn't eating enough at 3 months, told me to increase to 5 times per day. That's a struggle sometimes but at 6 months I was at 77% of excess weight lost and I noticed it's better with less plateaus when I do that. You can do it, and btw I was 49 on surgery day and now I'm 50 and in better health than I was at 49!

    May 2022 surgery?

I tried to multi-quote and I did the same quote 3X. my bad. I'm 67 ...hoping for surgery in mid june and today CIGNA approved me. YAY! I meet with my surgeon on Monday, 5/16 and hopefully get a surgery of 6/8-ish. I started a modified liver shrinking diet one week ago ---all per the surgery cooridnator --- it was 2 protein shakes, one under 300 calorie meal and 2 snacks (usually less than 100 calories). I lost 5 lbs. Today I started the all liquid protein shake eating plan, and the surgeon will tell me where to go with that protocol when I see him Monday. Good luck to everyone here on the way to surgery or recovering.

    May 2022 surgery?

Don’t know where “love” lives, but I don’t have that address. I’ve been married n divorced had 3 sons n now grands. Still have some miles left maybe if I get this true thinning out might find a fella to hang with. Been by myself since 2004
  5. Hi everyone. I am exactly 1 week post op today and I feel like I didn't even have surgery because I'm still waking up with the same hunger pains I had before surgery. I'm hungry all day. Can anyone give me some advice as to what to do to calm this hunger? I'm still on the liquid diet so it's protein shakes, pudding, jello, yogurt, and water all day long... I'm so hungry all day that I'm tempted to eat real food, but I refuse to cheat. Any advice would help. Thanks. Sent from my moto g stylus 5G using BariatricPal mobile app

    May 2022 surgery?

My surgery is Friday the 13th. I just had my LAST meal before surgery because I have to do only shakes tomorrow until surgery. My Dr had me on 2 shakes/1 meal/day for 2 weeks pre-op. The one meal had to consist of 3-4 oz of a lean protein, 1 cup of NON-starchy vegetables and 1/2 cup of either brown rice, whole wheat pasta, or sweet potato or sprouted wheat bread.

How often do you guys weigh yourselves?

I weight first thing in the morning after I pee buck naked every morning that I have a scale available to me. Having said that, I travel more than half of the time, so I only end up weighing myself maybe two days a week - Friday and Saturday, or Sunday and Monday, often. But this week I'm at my parents' house and I've weighed every day for almost a week!

How often do you guys weigh yourselves?

For the first couple years I only weighed at my follow-up appointments. This was less a choice than it was bowing to reality since I didn't fit on home scales. When I could fit on a home scale I weighed whenever I saw a scale for a couple weeks just for the novelty of being able to. After a couple weeks the novelty wore off. I returned to just weighing at monthly follow-ups. Once I stopped the monthly follow-ups I just weighed at medical appointments which pretty quickly became my annual physicals. I don't weigh at home. Good luck, Tek
  9. Band Remover 2022

Baseball size bulge where port was after removal

Today is May 11th, 2022. I had my band removed 6 days ago. I have had it for 10 years (I am currently 43). I never had it filled after year 3 (I believe I only had it filled 3 times the first 1-2 years, then felt I was too restricted, losing weight too fast so I had some of the fill taken out. I am 5'4 and started out around 245 and got down to a low of 145-150. Once I had some of the fill taken out, I did gain 15-20 pounds. I was comfortable at the 163ish mark, was still a size 6-8. Then, more recently (so year 8 or so, I would randomly throw up/gag in the mornings, painfully, losing appetite). So, I had it completely unfilled November 2021, gained a few more pounds (likely overate @ holidays) :) . Anyways, today I am going for an early post-op followup (day 6 after the band removal) -- I am still in a lot of pain. The surgeon had told me that my surgery took twice as long as it should have because part of the band prongs (?) had to be DUG out from my intestines. I now have extra incisions - I was in so much pain after surgery. I needed help by my husband to go to washroom (could not go from standing to sitting on my own), was actually in tears and that was with pain medicine. That intense pain did somewhat subside a bit after day 2-3. However, I am still experiencing pretty intense pain when going from laying down to standing up. I also, similar to a poster above, feel a large hard bulge where the largest incision is (where the port used to be). The surgeon did mention some hematomas (bleeding) may develop, can be painful and should go away on their own (ugh, that sounds so awful! basically internal bleeding - scary!) Either way, I feel like I was a guinea pig with the FDA, there was not enough long term research done yet, to really know all the risks and how very common they are with lapband. Which, yes, someone had to be the experiments, I get it. My surgeon says he quit putting them in back in 2018. I know and understand it's elective surgery and I signed off on it --- I just wanted to share my experience and hoping the damage this band has done to my body will repair itself completely! For now, I am just glad it is OUT before it did even worse, possibly permanent damage. My suggestion (and any good bariatric doctor will tell you) - is if you've had it for 10 years, get it out. There are other options (sleeve is one), I personally am not electing to have one but to each their own -- this is just a PSA (public service announcement).
  10. I thought I would be more obsessive about it and want to see every pound that comes off. Turns out, I weigh myself once a week. That way I don't see the daily fluctuations (which I know are normal, but I still don't want to see them lol) and the weight loss has a bigger impact. I'm still struggling with pain in my largest incision as well as the stomach muscle behind it (honestly, that muscle is the bain of my existence right now) so getting that wow factor from a week's worth of weight loss helps in dealing with the lingering pain.
  11. I think you can't expect everyone in your life to change everything in THEIR lives because you are having surgery. He was trying to give you a day off from cooking, but it felt more stressful to you. If you're going to start resenting his way of handling food, you're going to have a hard time moving forward, especially if you know he doesn't appreciate your responses (snarky comments - no one likes those!). FWIW, I eat out like 90% of my meals because I travel for work most of the week and sometimes for 2 weeks in a row. You can eat out, you just have to think about what you're going to eat. I eat fish and veggies, or chili, or pulled pork, or a burger minus the bun. Or basically anything I want - even pizza if nothing else is available. I just don't eat very much of it and I try to limit the carbs (pizza is very rare, but sometimes it's what everyone else is having and I don't like being left out or being a party pooper). Don't worry about every single meal being perfect - that's a way to set yourself for failure. Just aim to eat well 80-90% of the time, and you'll do great!

    Pre-op diet

I’m over half way through 2 weeks. I found that sipping every 3 minutes (like they say for post) is helping me through it. Never hungry. Over 100 oz a day. Craving only cocktail onions. Only thing off diet has been a tsp of diluted apple cider vinegar.

    IS THIS NORMAL?

About the first week , I could only do small sips because of my esophagus being stretched and it was "extremely narrow" according to my surgeon. Drinking didn't bother my stomach but it hurt my throat. After about a week I was drinking pretty normal but could not take huge gulps, if would feel like I was swallowing a hard lump of something. Now, 7 weeks out, I can drink a lot and fast. I wouldn't say I chug like before surgery but I can definitely get water down quick. Before I had surgery I just kept reading "sip, sip, sip" and I was worried I would never be able to drink normal again but that was short lived and I was back to normal in no time.

    Newby to group

Hi there, I've had my sleeve surgery on 29/04. I was so scared but after the operation I was good. I struggled to get water down after operation. This Friday it would be two weeks and I cannot wait to start eating healthy food. Miss chewing. Anyone else on here from Melbourne, Australia? Sent from my SM-G998B using BariatricPal mobile app

    So cool!!!

So when I had my surgery, I was able to see pics of the inside of my stomach as well as the part that was removed after the surgery. I just logged into my patient portal and I was able to read the surgery notes and pathology notes. The part of my stomach they removed was 8 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide. A regular, empty stomach is about 12 inches long by 6 inches wide and can hold up to a quart of food. That means my remaining stomach is only 3 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide and can hold 3 ounces lol Very, very neat...
  17. Ever tried Korean Hot Dogs? Think: corn dog on steroids. Picked these up for the fam this afternoon and i had about 1/3 of the furthest one on left for dinner-ish. Its a “Volcano” (spicy) beef hot dog, battered and covered with Frosted Flakes (and I’m assuming deep fried), lol. It usually comes covered with a bunch of tasty sauces and seasonings, but i ordered the sauces on the side so the dogs didn’t get soggy in transit. Im guessing 290 cals for what i ate? P.S. i also had a more-approved restaurant-made greek salad for lunch-ish that I shared with Mr. that I didn’t take a pic of (it was meh, i like my salads better).

    my dinner

So I gave the Nuwave a shot tonight, should have taken a picture but I forgot. I took the frozen salmon, put some olive oil on, and Mrs. Dash seasoning, then 25 minutes (from frozen) in the Nuwave, it came out pretty good! I put on some Teriyaki sauce when it was done for flavor and it was good. I think I prefer the pressure cooker though, it comes out more flaky and soft, this was a little tough although I might have put it in for too long. I had a side of corn (3 oz) also with teriyaki sauce, and it was a pretty good dinner!
  20. Ask your doctor because the weird thing is the pre op diet varies sooooo much depending on your program. I was suggested 2-3 shakes a day and one protein meal daily. That meant a meal consisting of 4oz of a protein and 2 oz of low carb vegetables once a day. I was also allowed sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, and broth. I usually had my shake for breakfast, followed by a lot of Gatorade zero and a jello. Then I had my protein meal for lunch, jello as a snack, protein shake for dinner followed by 1-2 sugar free popsicles all while drinking A LOT of water all day. I rarely drank 3 shakes a day because they make me so constipated. I did have veggie broth every other day to have something savory. God, I don't miss those days. Clothes?

Thank you for saying that. It is very encouraging and the thought of it makes me happy. It’s getting hot in NC and I still have school for one more month. I actually received 4 pairs of pants and 1 shirt and they all need to go back. Your idea to buy the next 3 sizes down is a good one as we wear summer weight here until Thanksgiving. Thank you again. Your comment made me smile!

    Dumping?!

To repeat again, only about 30% of Gastric Bypass patients dump to any degree. Back when I had surgery 50% was the quoted rate, but back then the bypasses were a bit more distal which would make dumping more likely. I am one of the few, the proud, the dumpers! I dump on sugar and fats. Less so on fats. Not enough to dump on cheese, thank goodness. I am glad I dump as it takes sugar off my menu when otherwise I would abuse the crap out of it. While dumping sounds horrible, it's not quite as bad as it sounds. I don't often dump these days as I have a good sense of how much sugar I can consume when. When I am fatigued, stressed, sick, or in other ways out of sorts I dump easier, so at such times I try to be extra careful, but still misjudge and it get's me. When I'm in public I don't do sugars at all, though I don't do them much anyhow. I asked my surgeon for a little extra bypass, a little extra restriction, and dumping. 18+ years later I still dump, my restriction is still in place. I have no clue on the extra bypass. I have dumped on fruit but rarely. My first dumping episode, at about 3 months post-op, was orange juice. Good luck, Tek

    Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

I'm only a week out, but I was taken off all my diabetes and blood pressure meds the day I had my surgery, and I have to check both twice a day now to watch for any indication I need them back. As of today, literally 20 minutes ago, my blood sugar is 119 and my blood pressure is 128/76!!!!!!!!! So it looks like I'm holding steady completely off those 3 meds!!!!! Massive happy dance going on here I have been on blood pressure meds since 2010 and diabetes meds since 2009. This is AMAZING!!!!!

    Dumping?!

From what I've read, only about 30% of bypass patients and very few sleeve patients dump. Usually on sugar but also on high fat foods, for some people. From what I can tell, it's best to eat "new" foods at home the first time in case they don't agree with your new tiny tummy (this is true even if you don't dump - some things can make you throw up: I ate some dry chicken a few weeks after surgery and threw up!). If I were you, I'd be very careful with what I ate when out of the house, and "experiment" more when I was near my own bathroom!
