  1. Hi, Tiffykins is the resident expert on revisions, as she has a compelling story and fantastic success. I am newer on my journey - 6 weeks out and have lost 20 pounds. I just shattered through my lowest lap-band weight as of today and I am thrilled about it. I, personally, was not expecting to lose much weight with the sleeve because I am a low BMI patient and had been very disappointed with the band. I was just happy to have the band out and I wanted a safety net to keep me from regaining a lot of weight. But, the sleeve has completely exceeded my expectations. The restriction is very consistent. There is no more discomfort from the port internally or externally (of course my port area is still healing from the removal and I can't put a lot of pressure on it rgiht now). I eat chicken - which I couldn't do with the band. I eat 1/4 of a piece of wheat toast, which i could never do with the band. The difference is wonderful and immediate. I am so sorry to hear about your lap-band problems. Take some comfort in knowing you are not alone in this experience. There are a lot of us out there that didn't see lasting results with the band. The sleeve has been a great option for the people here on the board. Good luck in your decision-- Lara
  2. Hi, I was sleeved 12/5. I had an easy recovery and am so grateful to my surgeon for cosmetically fixing my scars. As a band to sleeve conversion I've had this same lap surgery 5 times in 5 years so the scars were starting to get ropey. He did a scar revision (I didn't even ask!) and they are healing nice and flat, I can tell they will become almost invisible. I am on pureed foods now and not loving anything which is good I suppose. Nothing taste really good. I'm already stalled but then I was a pretty low BMI since I was a band conversion so I expect it to be slow. I know I'm consuming around 800 calories a day at most but I think the issues I had with the band have my metabolism all messed up. I just started Yoga and regular massage since my cranky back can't have Aleve any more. I've done weight training for the past 5 years so decided to mix it up a bit and try to deal with the back pain naturally. Because of the early stall I'm also moving proactively to the 5:2 eating plan (regular (pureed/soft) sleeve consumption 5 days a week and a modified liquid fast 2 days a week). My surgeon approved. I understand that is a good way to snap out of a stall and since I am not used to eating real foods I hardly noticed going back on liquids today. I hope this is effective. Regarding poopage....I had vicious diarrhea the first two weeks but everyone said that would change and I would get constipated. Well they were right, I think I'll get some Colace. I miss my fresh veggies and think I will do better when I am able to get some natural fiber. Best wishes for a fab. 2014 to everyone, sleevers ROCK!

I joined. Had revision on Monday, so will use this to keep me honest, though I know I am concentrating on healing first and loss second! Thanks for doing this...

    Baby..oh Baby!!

I am about 10 weeks out of my band to sleeve revision and doing well lost 31 lbs so far (115 lbs total with band). And then yesterday I found out I was pregnant!! This is the reason I wanted to lose the weight and get healthy and yes it is a great blessing I could not be happier. But I am scared to death! I am losing about 2 to 3lbs every week and they want that to slow down a bit. So they want me to eat more......WHAT eat more I cant get down the crap I need to eat NOW. Drs. want me to drink at least 3 Protein shakes and 3 to 4 meals a day.....it is impossible. So if anyone has any ideas or have gone through this please HELP! I am stopping the personel training and the gym will just take walks around the block. I think this might be a lot worse then the 30 day post op diet:001_tt2:

Sophomoreville - A Home For The the Tweeners

I'm a revision too and likewise I don't really have restriction. Maybe if I eat a whole lot of dry chicken at once I will feel it back up into my oesophagus and that's a little unpleasant, but otherwise nope. But what I have been feeling is pleasantly satiated after half an hour of eating good quality protein. So I have to force myself to eat the smaller quantity knowing the satisfaction *will come* its just not immediate. Its hard work but its doable. I do have dumping and squits from sugary and fatty food but it's not like one square of chocolate will have me heaving. The dumping can be linked to how much intestine they bypassed. Maybe they were conservative with you. But even without the super virgin stomach benefits, you do still have a tool at your disposal, it's just that maybe you won't have a traditional honeymoon. You may have to live like how a Vet does but be a bit strict with yourself. Think of it this way, you won't get the regain shock that first timers who had a fabulously easy honeymoon do, coz ya been there, done that! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Detached port

My port flipped and I had to have surgery to correct it. Sometimes they can just tilt and they might be able to still access it. However, in a case of a full flip, the problem is that you can't get fills, which stalls your progress. I found out 8 weeks after my surgery that my port flipped when they couldn't access my port. I went in for revision surgery and it was a much easier recovery than the 1st surgery.
  7. I'm reading through lots of threads where individual issues are addressed, and just wondering if there's a super thread anywhere dedicated to the day-to-day differences between the two procedures...? Haven't seen one yet, but imma keep looking... Just recently started considering a revision to VSG. Have had my band a little over 5 years and I haven't had any significant complications, but I'm going through the reflux vs. restriction game so the band isn't really doing much for me (for about 2 years now).

Very well said, I am not giving up I just have to change things up. I went into my revision surgery not sure of the scar tissue preventing it but in the end I got it so I will MAKE it work

    Surgery scheduled but nervous

Don't be scared. I had my lap band revision to bypass May 7. I was expecting this surgery to really take a toll on me, but it was not bad at all. I had minimum, very minimum pain and left day after surgery to go home. Only took Tylenol once. So excited for you!!
  10. We've received many many requests over the years to add a revision forum. Your wish has now been granted!
  11. I wanted to update my post. I had revision surgery on August 19. My surgeon submitting papers to my insurance, Unicare, in July and they approved in just a couple days. My doctor stated band intolerance as the reason. He did seem a bit surprised though that they approved so quickly. Surgery as much harder than I expected. I am 8 days post-op now and starting to feel better. I was told that the band was encapsulated in the stomach and that they had to do a lot of heavy stitching in my upper stomach area. That is why I was having so much pain in that area post-op. I am sipping constantly and walking better. I still have to sleep on my back and don't see that changing anytime soon. I can't bend over yet and still need help around the house. I'm taking one day at a time, and looking forward to a full recovery. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck to everyone on a band to sleeve journey.

I would definitely give some push back and ask for a different prep - there are many. Does he know that you have had WLS since your last scope? I just had one last month and they prescribed SuPrep, which is a low volume, two step prep - two 8 oz (IIRC) bottles that you drink fairly quickly, followed by a couple of bottles of water the next hour, done the night before and then again the morning of the procedure, and that seemed to go well - for both me and the doc. Should be little problem for a 1 year post op. My wife had a bad scope some years ago despite being compliant with the prep, It turns out that others with the DS like her reported similar problems - it seems that the wacky intestinal configuration needs a bit more time to clean out, as we discussed in one of our support group meetings. One of the other vets in the group who had a similar problem worked out a revised routine with his gastro that basically involved doing the clear diet for two (or possibly three) days before the bowel prep, and that did the job. When it was time for my wife's next scope a couple of years ago - new gastro since we had moved - we hit him up with the problem, and while he was focusing mostly on the WLS needing a low volume prep, which he prescribed, she did the modified longer liquid (not strictly clear the first day, just liquidy) and all went well with that one, too. So, while I am not an MD, it is clear that there are several ways to get the job done, and you gastro should be sensitive to your needs as well as his own. It kinda sounds like he is punishing you for what he may interpret as non-compliance the last time, or maybe this potion is what he is most experienced with for a more challenging case, and while he may be aware of newer preps on the market, he isn't experienced with them and goes with his old tried and true. Again, I would push back at this, tell him that you can't comply with this and why. Discuss what other options there are to get the job done that works for both of you. Your medical care, as with most things in life, are a negotiation and you have a say in this. If the doc doesn't want to comply with your needs, then it is entirely within your rights to go to a different doctor to get what you need. Ask your PCP or your bariatric practice for a referral to someone more bariatric friendly, if necessary. Good luck,

    WLS and Seniors

Wow it's good to find others in my age bracket even though you all haven't been real active on this thread. I had a rough first week or so and I'm 5 weeks out from my revision from band to sleeve. But even during the first couple of tough weeks I have been delighted that I did this. The band was just not for me. I could never get it to work and as far as I'm concerned anyone considering getting the Lap Band needs to know that it's a crap shoot whether it will work well enough for you to get to goal. My daughter just got a video back from her daughter's school skit night. During the whole thing you can hear me clearing my throat or coughing. That was from the band. I don't do that now. I'm so glad to be rid of that thing! But better yet, I am so happy that my stomach is smaller and I am not hungry all the time (I was with the band) and I can only eat a small amount of food or drink at one sitting. If only I could have had this at age 48 or 50!! But I'm thrilled that I have it now and I only hope that my success will be as good as so many of the stories I read on this website. I started out being scared to death that I would have a similar story with this as I did with the band. I lost 35 lbs. quickly with the band and then the weight loss stopped and I struggled from then on trying to just keep that 35 lbs. off. And I threw up all the time. The longer I have the sleeve the more confident I am that this is the absolutely right choice for me and the more confident I am that I will get to my goal of 130! As for health issues, I am able to take a walk now and enjoy it. I haven't been able to walk for years because of my bad knees. I have joined Curves and I'm enjoying that already - 5 weeks out from surgery. And I've been planting flowers like a mad woman and that was not an option before or after the band. And I've gone from taking 300 mg. of Wellbutrin XL to 75mg. of regular Wellbutrin (an antidepressant.) And I'm HAPPY! YaY! Best of luck to all of you in your journey to health and beauty.

    Scared of regaining it all!

In my opinion. A revision is not something to be considered unless all things have been tried. There is an increased risk when going in for another surgery. Also you do not get the reset you get with the first surgery. The best thing to do in my opinion when you gain. Is to: Go back to tracking everything you put in your mouth. Make sure your Fluid is in check. Make sure your Protein goals are reached. Reduce carbs for excelerated loss ( I don't eat low carb but if my loss reduces I up my protein and reduce carbs) When hungry eat protein it's so filling and your working your tool as you really feel the restriction. Make sure to not drink calorific drink's it all adds up. Try and get more sleep. And so on and so fourth. If someone tries this for months and no movement then perhaps discuss a revision but at this stage it seems to soon.. Not to mention the weight creeping up that much from eating once a day (what is it you eat that once a day ?) A dr visit is warranted before a surgeons visit to see if there is anything contributing to the weight gain. That is just my opinion though. Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app

    Shoulder pain

Check out my post under left should pain discussion. My dr found that my tubing was rubbing against my diaphragm and I had to have a revision to fix my problem. Good luck!
  18. I had revision surgery for a slipped band in November. A month later, I started having fainting spells and spasms that originate mostly in my stomach and diaphram. I have been to hospitals and doctors, had lots of tests and no one can get to the bottom of it. My lapband surgeon says it is not related to my band. All my friends and family think I should have my lapband taken out. I don't want to lose my lapband. It is my $16, 000 investment that did help me lose 85 lbs and feel super. Now I can't exercise or do much because exertion brings on these spells. I am on three medications to control the seizures but an EEG did not show they were seizures. One doctor thinks it is some kind of problem being caused by the placement of my band in proximity to the vegas nerve and is irritating the vegas nerve. I am in limbo, waiting for the medications to stop the fainting and seizures, and wanting to get back to my sweet spot and my exercise program. I also am waiting for surgery for a mass in my sinus. Has anyone ever heard of the band or the tubing irritating the vegas nerve and causing this? I am really down because my activities have been seriously cut back and I am gaining weight. Thanks for any suggestions or information you have. Lynda
  19. He will hopefully let me know if I can have the revision all in one surgery. He usually does it in two but my insurance is changing on 7/1 so he will not be able to get me on for two surgeries. I will try to accept any decision he makes because I know he has my safety in mind. Prayers would be helpful though so that I may finally get this 3 year process wrapped up and be an exbander and new sleever!
  20. Here... they are not allowed to do it in one procedure.... there is a minimum wait of 3 months from band removal before you can have a revision. Basically they say it is to allow your stomach to heal and for the area around your band to go back to its original shape.
  21. I went for my final doctor appointment before my surgery on July 22nd today. My insurance has approved me for band to sleeve revision all in one surgery. I remember my doctor mentioning when we first discussed revision surgery that it is done in one surgery unless there is a lot of scar tissue or something. I didn't think too much about it because I've never had hernia surgery or gall bladder or any other abdominal surgery other than the lap band. So today he tells me that most of the time the revision is done in two surgeries! I am really upset. I can't take time off work and burn up sick time, money, energy etc on a third surgery! So I guess my question is how many of you were told it might be two surgeries and woke up sleeved? Do most doctors just say that to cover the behinds?
  22. My surgeon refuses to do it in one procedure. She did note that other surgeons do it in one, but I went with her because I trusted her track record and she was in-network. I waited two months between procedures. It was a pain to take additional time off of work and such and I was pretty disappointed when I first heard about two surgeries. But I'd had two bands, the first 17 years ago, so I was a little concerned about what she'd find going on in there. We only talked briefly the day after the sleeve surgery (saw her colleague for the 2 wk follow up) so I only know that I had to have a hernia repair (hadn't expected that again) and that there was kind of a mess of stitches or something that had to be undone from my band revision seven years ago. I just feel really grateful that all went well. I'm loving being sleeved. The experience is so much different than with the band.
  23. My doctor said 1 surgery, and it'll be outpatient. I will be the first surgery that morning since it's a revision from band to sleeve (instead of just a sleeve). The more complicated the surgery, they are usually the first surgery scheduled. I'll be able to go home the same day in the early evening if all goes well. I think it may be about money too. In the USA, there are so many hoops. The sleep test alone they charged the insurance $6K. CRAZY!

    Newbie

I just joined this group. I have just started the process for revision from a lapband.. The band slipped and I have only lost 60 lbs. since 5/09. I saw a new surgeon last week and wanted a bypass, but he thinks the sleeve will work for me. I am glad since it is less surgery. I have been getting alot of good info on these message boards. Seems like most people are having good luck with the sleeve so I am looking forward to getting it. I know it will be a while. It seems to take forever to go thru the process, but it will be worth it.
  25. Mine was done in one op and having two separate ones was never discussed or considered. Only thing my surgeon said was that if he found he couldn't perform the revision he would just remove my band. I had mine done as open surgery though as I had a lot of scarring from a previous big abdominal hernia op a year earlier. My band had been empty for quite a while beforehand as it had slipped a lot so that wasn't an issue and I did have to follow another pre-op diet. My surgeon informed me of the risks and possible complications concerning revision and assured me he would do he best he could for me. I was happy with that and left myself in his hands as I trusted him implicitly.
