    Reflux sucks

Because of my insane battle with GERD and other issues as it relates to the band I am now opting for a revision to bypass .I was going for the sleeve but will now go with bypass.

    Sleep Apnea?

I am scheduled for my in hospital sleep study on Halloween...can't wait to see the results.I was so busy trying to take all the necessary steps for revision from lapband to bypass that I had no time to really think"When as the last time I had a sound night of sleep?
  3. Lutasha, I'm sorry things were so rough for you in the hospital. How is was the healing where your port was? I keep reading that part is very painful for people. I find out in two days if my band will be removed and I'm not sure if I was to get a revision to bypass. The thought scares me that i thought I would have my band for life but have had issues and wonder if I would encounter issues if I had bypass that is permanent.
  4. Sorry if this has been asked. I was wondering if anyone has received a gastric sleeve in Mexico, but now needing a revision? I would like to know the cost of it if possible. Thank you!

    Miserable and depressed

Just saw you post on the other thread. PLEASE do not give up seeking a revision. No one deserves to be miserable and in pain. It may be a 4 hour trip but that's nothing compared to a life time of being uncomfortable. If I was you, once I was done setting things up with the new surgeon I would then report the old doctor. Your revision should be on his priority list since it means you were an unsuccessful sleeve and a negative reflection on his skills as a surgeon. I realize there are no guarantees, but he should be making every attempt to make sure things work out for you.

    Bummed and angry

Hello, everyone it's been about a month since I last posted when I missed my appointment for to meet with my new surgeon to consult about a revision from the sleeve to the bypass. I have a hiatal hernia, a severe case of GERDS which causes me to vomiting a lot and deal with a painful burning sensation. I'm 16 months out from surgery and my weight loss has been an epic fail. My current surgeon said that the issues I'm having INSIGNIFICANT to him and that he recommends that I have the Gastric Bypass. So I have an appointment with a new surgeon that is 4 hours away from where I stay because he's the only surgeon that accepts my insurance outside of my current surgeon. And I have a feeling that I am going to miss this appointment as well and giving my current situation, I'm pretty sure I won't make another attempt to get help. I'm completely discouraged and disgusted and regret my choice to have the gastric sleeve since I'm still obese, my type 2 diabetes is still out of control, my blood pressure is always high. Now I'm worst off than when I started my weight loss journey..... But good luck with your surgery...

    Senior needs help fast.

I'm so sorry to hear about your medical issues. I'm 54 and had my bypass on 07/29/15. I've had no issues or complications, and I'm very happy with the outcome so far. I believe there's a section here for sleeve to bypass revisions, so you might consider posting there as well to get specific answers from people who have gone through exactly what you are facing. I will say though, if it helps any, that we have a 76 year old bypass patient in my support group, and his progress has been remarkable. Best of luck and wishes in your upcoming surgery. Let us know how it goes.

Anyone having surgery on Sept 30, 2015?

Had a bypass revision on Sept 29. I went through the same thing. I would be down 10 then back up 3.... I was disappointed but kept on track and weighed yesterday and suddenly...... 7 lbs down! A total of 35 lbs since surgery! We have to hang in there - follow our orders and believe in the surgery and let it "do it's thing". I'm looking forward to the Holidays and feeling REALLY well!

    Sleeve or Bypass?

According to many of our surgeons so does having Gastric Bypass. Bypass doesn't keep you from eating regular food. What the hell is "regular food" anyway? I am five weeks post-op and spent the week in Vegas. I went out to eat, went to a birthday party, ordered take-out, had Snacks in my suite and even a small slice of birthday cake last night. No WLS prevents anyone from leading a normal life with "regular food." But if you think the Sleeve is going to keep you thin AND make it possible to eat the way you have prior to WLS, you're wrong. Research shows many Sleevers do revisions to Bypass because they were not able to lose all the weight expected to be healthy. There are many reasons for this and chances are it has as much to do with diet after as anything else after surgery.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

Just want to clear up a few things. 1. Having bypass does not mean you won't be able to eat regular food. I have been eating in restaurants since 4 weeks post op. I can eat whatever I want, that does not mean I should nor do I. 2. Both surgeries will ultimately achieve a high weight loss as long as you follow the plan 3. Both surgeries are invasive - with the sleeve they actually remove 85 percent of your stomach which means it cannot be reversed. With bypass they reroute your intestines so that you have malabsorption which is intended to help with weight loss 4. Both require you to take supplements and have labs checked on a regular basis do life. Adjustments to Vitamins are determined by how you are doing on those labs Most people choose bypass at the recommendation of their doctors because it cures both Reflux/Gerd and diabetes. Many times the sleeve and lap and actually make reflux/Gerd worse and in many cases those surgeries can bring it on. If reflux/Gerd gets bad enough it requires a revision to bypass anyway. Leverage your surgeon to help you decide what is best for your health history. They really are experts and can help guide you. It is definitely more than a personal decision in my opinion and requires a deep dive by experts in your health history. If you search this site for revisions to bypass you will see a lot of posts from people that have had to get s second and third surgery because they ended up with erosion and Gerd that had to be dealt with. My recommendation would be to research until you are comfortable with your choice. Good luck!
  12. This question isn't about myself, but I just honestly want to know what to expect or how I can be supportive. My boyfriend had his lap band done a handful of years ago at a time in between when we were together, so I don't know what it was like for him in the very beginning, and I don't think we got back together when he was at his lowest weight ever, but since then he's always kind of maintained whatever weight he's at. He's miserable with his band. And he will typically eat junk food more than healthier foods because he says it's actually easier for the bad food to go and stay down. He says that he wants his band out with no revision to a different WLS, and that his band makes it impossible for him to eat the healthy foods so once he has it out, he'll actually be able to eat his salads and grilled chicken breasts, etc. I hate to be skeptical and I really do want to support him in feeling better, but this is what I see: 1) he isn't making great food choices with his band, how can I think that will really change without any restriction? 2) he got up to his highest weight to need the band in the first place, 3) as far as I am aware, I've never seen him eat to accommodate his band (Protein shakes, smoothies, etc) despite it being clear it's too tight. So if he gets his band removed, is it still possible for him to lose weight? Have other ex-banders been able to have success without a revision surgery? Were y'all really able to eat better once the band was removed? What kind of support did y'all need from significant others? What can I say to be supportive without sounding like I'm just trying to criticize? I love him very much and would really like a future and family with him, but I'm afraid of him re-gaining weight to a point of detriment. I've been with him at his heaviest and loved him just the same while wanting him to be healthier. Please be clear this isn't a "I won't love him anymore if he gets fat" situation. I just want to be prepared for what he might go through and how we can get through it. Thanks

OMG how in the hell do people drink this?!?

I appreciate the fuller details. I'd forgotten that sleeve patients wait a good month to go beyond liquid. Down the line I may be discussing revision to sleeve with my surgeon, so the reminder is welcomed.
  14. Protein drinks are a way to get a lot of protein in with very low carbs and moderate calories. Back when I was banded, I was not informed of the benefits of a high protein/moderate carb diet and did not use Protein Drinks. There are still surgeons who don't want you to drink your calories. I dunno, I am maintaining a pretty massive weight loss (half my starting body weight) and I still have 1/2 or 1 premier Protein Drink daily... usually in my coffee plus a few sips and I call it Breakfast. I am 4 years band to sleeve revision. I am not wild about ANY of them. The ones I could tolerate where premier chocolate or strawberry. The vanilla is vile but works as a base for a smoothie or a fake latte. For ones that start as a powder, I found the nectar Syntrax the only ones i could BEAR to drink. My my main complaint is they weren't very "satiating" as a person with a mature sleeve. They have lots of crazy flavors - the best ones in my opinion was the vanilla bean and I think the chocolate was okay. I don't use it anymore but I did during the weight loss phase. The best way to try the syntrax product is get their sample pack. It used to be you could get it for the price of shipping which was a great way to try before you buy. I recommend calling the company and asking. I bought my big jug powder of the vanilla bean from Amazon as that was cheapest at the time.

    Had my surgery today!

Congratulations! I wish I hadn't waited seven years to revise!
  16. I don't even think about trying to eat slowly. I had been banded for 7 years when I got my revision. I need to work on that.
  17. Hi Im switching to the bypass from the lap band due to my band is leaking at the port. I'm tired of all the maintence with the band etc... Anyone do a revision to the bypass and how did it go? loose fast? any regrets? any advice? I gained some back due to my band being empty for a few months,,, my surgery is Nov 4, 2015...thanks

    I feel defeated

You are losing very quickly. I had my revision on 6/30 and am down about 41. I do think revisit patients lose a bit slower but I am very pleased with my own progress and you should be too!

    I feel defeated

Wow, I think you are losing really quickly. I can tell you, you lost significantly more than I did in the first two months, and I am not a band to sleeve revision and I started at a much higher BMI than you did -- two factors that are supposed to mean that you lose slower than me! But I thought I did great and so did my surgeon and team. Being up and down 2 lbs and losing in an exaggerated stair step pattern is very normal, don't stress about that either. Overall, you are doing great except I will say maybe work on your expectations a little

    I feel defeated

38lbs in 2 months is a lot of weight. If you look on the band to sleeve forums, revisions seem to lose slower but they still lose.
  21. Same here. My doctor said that if there was too much to clean up, I would wake up with only band removed. My outcome was in my favor and woke up unbanded and sleeved. So glad I got revised to sleeve! If you have to wait and get the sleeve months after, it's worth the wait. A 2nd surgery is the only thing that sucks, but, the surgery recovery is not bad at all. Much luck to you.

    I feel defeated

I got a band to sleeve revision on 8/11/15. I have only lost about 38 pounds. One day I will be down 2 pounds and the next I will be up 2 pounds! What is happening? I'm getting in all my protein and eating very little carbs. It's just hard to see so many others losing quickly and here I am like " nope, didn't lose this month"!

    Travel after surgery

Hello, you should be fine. Just make sure you make stops along the way to walk and not gas up so much:) I had the lapband and was up and walking and driving after a week. I had cabin fever, just listen to your body. Hoping the best for you and recovery. I am flying to Mexico for my revision and will be there 5 days. Traveling from East to West Coast. I have read for me to get up every 45 minutes to walk.
