    5 Years/help

So, I'm seven years into the band. So glad I did it but I was shocked at how little weight I lost. It took a long time, mostly because our bodies go into immediate starvation mode. I went from 240 to 180 over one year. I was never too tight and now seven years later, I have virtually no fill...just the band. I now weight 170. The last 10 pounds were lost when I hired a trainer. It took four months to ignite my metabolism that's how sluggish this weight loss procedure makes our metabolism. I now can eat normal amounts of food (not too much but normal) so I'm certain my stomache has changed. I go about every two years to the Dr. The tool worked but it's just a tool. Where I'm at today is that I think I have a clogged band. Friday evening at a fancy, expensive restaurant, I had a piece of chicken that still had cartlage attached. i pulled a piece from my mouth (not nice at a good restaurant)but I'm sure I swallowed a piece too and I cannot get it through or digested. That was Friday ... this is Tuesday evening. I am freaked out because I know I have to have this dealt with. Will it cost a fortune? I paid $14K cash for the band. I can eat some but there is constant pressure, not at all fun. Any advice? For you...you have to exercise, period. this is a bad diet tool but it does end the ability to binge eat and that was the trick to 60lbs. But I've been 150 before from diet and exercise and that look is entirely different. Start sweating to your waist.
  2. Alexandra, Thanks for the reply. I am sorry to hear your band was removed. I hope you have better luck with the new one. I was told that I did not have a slippage, so hopefully I can keep my band. I guess I just can't have it very tight. I did read on this site that someone suggested drinking vinegar, I did try that and it works. So hopefully I can keep it under control. I just hope I can start losing weight again, since my band is not that tight right now. Good luck with the new band, Rae
  3. Hi everyone. Had my EGD yesterday (which was awful-I woke up during the procedure) and the doc found that I had gastritis and esophagitis. Now I am wondering if I should have the sleeve surgery done. My last appointment before surgery with my surgeon is later this month. I do not want the RNY. Also, I had to see an internal medicine doc for a physical and he wants a sleep study done. I cannot fathom sleeping in a strange place being hooked up to wires with people watching me sleep. The idea freaks me out. I thought if I had sleep apnea that it would go away after losing weight so it would then be a non-issue. He told me that people with sleep apnea generally have it even after WLS. HUH? Does the machine make you depend on it by using it? I guess I have to do some research on sleep apnea.

Gastro Doctor and her thoughts on WLS

oh and one more thing, if you have never tried a medically managed weight loss program (like one your doctor is suggesting) then it surely would not hurt to try. If it succeeds, then great! If not, surgery is always still an option. No need to rush into a decision.
  5. I am for sure much more relaxed than I was like 4 months ago but I still don't drink calorie drinks (I rather eat my calories), I don't eat rice or bread, however I will have Pasta or eat a cookie... I am sure now with football gatherings and fall the temptations will be ever present. With 5 kids and 2 underweight there is no way to be temptation free as I have goodies for them plus a husband who has zero weight issues regardless of what he eats :/ IF I decide to use an appetite suppressant it probably would not be long term however I am trying natural methods before I go that route. I can eat a good portion of Protein and be hungry within the hour. For example I will have a scrambled egg and 2 turkey links and hungry an hour later.

    Weight Loss and Tattoos

i would think boob and maybe low back tattoos and maybe upper arm tattoos would change a little, depending on how much over weight and loose skin a person has. only have one tat on my ankle and so far so good.
  7. Just had to share my 2 month post-op photos! Look at them hips, though! Starting weight was 254. Day of surgery I was 240. Today I am 200. Doctor's goal is 140. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App

My doctor also recommended that I wait until I had lost weight after my sleeve to have my umbilical hernia repaired.

Only 100 pounds!? That's a helluva lot of weight.

Is there a limit on protein?

Your weight X .003= protein grams. It depends on your age and fitness level too. You can get too much protein. I've seen posts where people say they are eating 100 to 120 g of protein a day. That can cause problems too. For a woman, who lightly exercises, which I assume is most of us, 40-60 g is good. ????
  12. Same issues happened with me, had my metabolism tested, it was INSANELY low, trying to re-educate my body to sustaining a normal lifestyle of 1200 calories but I haven't lost a pound and am constantly active. One of the main issues I've read with this surgery is lots of people lose the weight from the forced healing process of eating SO little -- once your fully healed, you can eat more but your metabolism doesn't understand what happened.
  13. :help: :help: :omg: Okay, help I feel like a freak or a science project. i was baned on 4/27. As of approximately 1 week post-op i was down 15 pounds. Every morning I would get up and I would be a pound or two lighter. I started at 226 and at one time even saw 210. pop up on my scale. I was very weak during the clear liquid phase but stuck to it. I have since gone on to Protein Shakes and Soups. I have never exceeded 800 calories in a day, most days averaging around 600. Here is the problem. The last FOUR days I've gotten up and I have gained!!!!! Yes,it's true. Please don't run screaming from this message thinking that if you read it you might catch what I have. I need encouragement, help, scientific explanations on how this could be happening. I keep thinking it is Fluid but how many days will this continue? PLease don't tell me not to weigh myself, I can't help it I can't stop. First, I laughed not at all suprised by my bodies fear of losing weight (it has always been hard for my body to drop). but now I am starting to panic, what's the point of no food if I am still gaining f.....ng weight. I am really getting pissed. I AM NOT EATING!!! I feel like a science project that has gone way wrong. My scale says 214, now. Yesterday, after my 2.5 mile walk it even bumped up to 215.:angry Why am I not losing, and why am I putting it back on. I am starting to feel desperate and it isn't funny anymore. This makes me want to eat. Please help. Did I have the only band placed for weight gain? Should I call my doc and see if a horrible mistake has been made? Thanks, tina

    New and trying to decide

When I first visited with my surgeon for weight loss surgery he asked me which procedure I was interest in then he advised me of the procedure he would recommend for me. The choice was ultimately mine. I oringally wanted the lap band but due to the amount of weight I need to lose I really was not considered a candidate for the lap band procedure. My second option was the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. Why, because with the VSG the natural flow of food would not be altered in any way. Food would enter and exit the stomach in the same manner in which I feel we were created. With the Gastric Bypass the way food leaves your stomach and entered the intestines I could not mentall grasp. The thought of re0routing the natural flow of the intestines bothered me and I could not get past it. Yes, you lose weight a lot quicker with the Bypass; however, there is a higher risk of malnutrition with this procedure. Yes, we all will take Vitamins before and after surgery; however, I personally have a cousin who had the Gastric Bypass seven years ago and from the minute her surgery was conducted she has had problems. She says she would not have changed anything for her; however, she's still sick today. I am not pointing fingers about probelms; only trying to express my mindset between the two procedures. My initial visit with my surgeon was in April, 2012. My procedure was done on September 18, 2012 so I am a little over four months post-op. My weight at my initial consult was 293; today I weigh 214 which is a total weight loss of 79 lbs. The day of surgery I weighed in at 268 which equals a total of 54 lbs. down since surgery. GREAT! I can't express how happy I am for this weight loss. I'm looking forward to the next 50 lbs. My goal weight has not been set yet. The only I have set for myself and shared with my doctor is "whenever I can do whatever i choose to do whenever I choose to do it" with regard to energy level. Choose a doctor that YOU are comfortable with and that you feel is GOOD for YOU. The office staff is important because you need a support group. The doctor I used here in Fort Worth provides a lifetime support group that you can attend at no additional cost. That's a GREAT extra you don't hear about a lot. Research the doctors in your area and go for who will be BEST for YOU. I wish you nothing but the best for your journey. Which ever procedure you decide on please follow your heart because once you have had the procedure there is no undoing it. God Bless - Have a wonderful day!

  18. I resemble this very much though my surgery was 12/5 I was only recently having the same experience with reflux. It comes at the same time I may need to have my thyroid med reduced due to afib. I was due for a blood test in a week or so so went early and am waiting to see the results. I'm down 62# at this point. The weight loss has slowed to a crawl...
  19. During my 5 day preop diet, I lost 11 pounds. A week after surgery, I lost 5 pounds. During this time, I got my first fill of 1.5 cc. It's been two weeks and NO weight loss! Today, the doctor added 2.5 cc and now I'm at 4.0 cc. I am praying that with this second fill I would stop being hungry and start losing some weight.
  20. Hello - Does anybody want to share a one year anniversary story with us? How much weight have you lost and what did you do on your one year anniversary day.

    Finally Saying Hello :)

I have been lurking on these boards for months, and finally decided to create an account a couple weeks ago. I am a 31-year-old middle school teacher who has battled weight problems since 3rd grade. Five years ago, I lost over 60 pounds on Weight Watchers, which I loved!!!! The point thing was so easy, I was working out like a madwoman, life was great.... until my father, who I loved more than anything, died unexpectedly (heart attack, diabetes, sleep apnea-- I have no idea... my mom did not want to do an autopsy). Over the next 11 months, I also lost my dog (who I adored), my great uncle, my uncle, and my grandfather (my last living grandparent). Needless to say, the weight came back on, and then some. I battled depression during this time, but came out on top. My father's death inspired me to do what I love, so I went back to school and got my teaching credential. Last year was my first year teaching and it is the best decision I have ever made. I went back on Weight Watchers earlier this year, and got down to 289. At this time, i began researching WLS. One of my co-workers got the lap band, so initially I wanted that as well. I even went to an amazing seminar (Dr. Billy in Ventura, CA). His office said I need to contact my insurance, which I did. My PCP referred me to the Options program though Kaiser. I went to my first orientation, where the sleeve was mentioned. Since that day in May, I have researched tirelessly online while (not so) patiently waiting for my first Options class at the end of July. Thanks to all of you amazing posters, I am truly looking forward to this journey. I am hoping to be sleeved in November while on my Thanksgiving break from school. You have all been so informative.... I ordered unjury Protein powder, a blender ball cup, and picked up a bunch of sugar-free Torani syrups at Smart & Final. Had my first Protein shake for Breakfast this morning (Unjury chocolate Splendor and Water with a little bit of the Chocolate and Salted Caramel sugar-free Toranis)... it was great!!!!! I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you for sharing your experiences......I am so motivated to begin this next chapter of my life. Sleeve me!!!! Allison

    7 Months out ..

Thank you so much for your suggestions I actually called my surgeon and I'm here at the office they did some blood work and the believe is either gallbladder stones that I've had from now past hunting me down since I've lost so much weight or a liver cyst they saw on a ct scan ... But right now I'm out the hospital and they have prescribed me perks for the pain... Lets see what happens next ..

    Problems

i have the exact thing happen to me. i am hungry and want to start digging in and then i feel that aweful thing in my chest. i have to stick my finger down my throat and get it out because i feel very uncomfortable and panicked when it happens. it happens when i forget that i have a band. i eat too big of bites too quick. i was banded on 2/16. i have no fill but i know there is some restrict already. if u are not losing any weight at all then u are eating too many calories. u should be losing 1-2 pounds a week now.
  24. Hi everyone. I am over 1 year post-op, and I just found out I'm pregnant! I still have not gone to see my gyn or sleeve doc, but I am already having food aversions. How much should I be eating each day? I am currently at ~1200 calories a day and maintaining my weight. I don't want to gain more than 25 lbs during pregnancy. Any advice would be appreciated!
  25. I was banded on 5/19, so three weeks since surgery for me. Down about 20 lbs since surgery, which seems really quick. Ironically the last 7 lbs have been since I started eating food again (albeit soft food) and increased my calories. I also started exercising more vigorously (elliptical only for now) so that's probably what has kept me losing. Definitely have the same issue with a stitch sticking out from the port incision. I cut it down but yeah, it does not appear to be "dissolving" and it's a bit itchy. But the incision is healing so I just have to not touch it. And yes, it does seem indented somehow when I suck in my stomach. The other incisions look like they'll disappear without any scar but the port incision I doubt will do that, and the indent seems like it's probably not going to go away. My doc said they all look normal, so I take his word for it. Jillsko, sorry to hear about the clot, but it sounds like it's not going to adversely affect your health, so that's good. If there's one thing I've learned from this site, it's that no two people heal or lose weight the same way or at the same rate - there are just too many individual factors involved. Keep the faith and follow your doc's orders and you'll be fine I'm sure. Great to be post-band though, eh? Especially lately as I've ramped up my exercise and gotten back on real food, and as my healing has continued, I'm feeling just really thankful and really glad I did this. I am excited for the destination, but I am working hard to keep it in the day and to concentrate on the journey.:tongue2:
