    January surgeries?!

Don’t be scared ladies. I have my surgery on January 7 and I was so nervous before I almost made myself sick. I am now only 10 days postop and I can honestly tell you that it wasn’t nearly as big of a deal as I was making out to be in my head. I’m doing awesome, I have no problem drinking fluids, and honestly just feel really great. The first two days I was in a little bit of pain but only took Tylenol and that took care of it. I’ve already 31lbs since January 3 (the start of my preop diet). So I guess what I’m saying is don’t be nervous, it really ain’t no thing 🙂

    December 2018 Sleevers!

Hey Lolo, I am jettisoning shakes (to a point)! While they are really important for getting your protein in right after surgery (when it hurts to eat anything), they are still processed foods. Most of them are made up of some combination of soy or whey protein, which is ok--but this processed protein triggers a significant insulin response. I am able to meet my protein goals with whole foods as part of my regular intake, so the shakes are no longer necessary for me. That said, I still have my shakes handy. If I am having a day where I might be missing the mark on protein--or right after a workout (if I don't have time to eat), I may have half a premier shake. However, to the extent I can avoid them, I will. I was doing this on instinct, but my surgeon actually recommended that I cut them out at my one month follow up yesterday--so, great minds must think alike. I told him what and how I have been eating and he's totally on board. Apparently, he's been eating Keto for a few years. P.S.--when I say I am jettisoning shakes, I mean the premier shakes and muscle milk stuff etc. If you're doing healthy shakes with kale, etc. in a blender, those are great. I am not having those personally at this point, but not for any particular reason. Maybe I'll go that route in the future. It's hard to do a true Keto diet after WLS. If you're doing Keto correctly, you're eating close to 1,500-2,000 calories a day with 60% or more of those calories coming from good fats (hopefully). With that many calories, you can still meat your protein goals. Also, people who are successful on Keto also mix in intermittent fasting, where they will skip breakfast and go 18-20 hours without eating and have maybe 4-6 hour window of opportunity to eat. That won't work for someone with a sleeve (at least within the first few years following surgery). We can't consume that many healthy calories, so we need to make sure we are hitting our protein goals first. We can then consume the rest of our calories in the form of healthy fats. On most day since surgery, my macro will look something like 45-55% protein, 45-55% fat and 10% or less carbs. One month post-op, I am eating between 750-1000 calories per day of protein and good fat foods. Good fats will get your calorie count up, but neither sleeve nor keto require real calorie counting. I just keep track of calories to make sure I am not going off the rails and to set a limit (I don't want too much of a good thing, if ya know what I mean). I have been doing a little intermittent fasting--but not as long as most Keto adherents. I am usually asleep by 9:30 and I am up somewhere between 4:30 and 5am to hit the gym. I don't eat before my work out (you burn 20% more fat doing cardio in a fasted state in the morning). I may skip breakfast altogether and wait until lunch to eat (or I might have a small high protein snack after my workout, if I am really hungry--which I am usually not). I consume most of my calories between 12pm and 7:30pm. I also make sure to him my water goals--which is important no matter what diet/lifestyle you follow. This is as close to Keto as I can safely get at this stage in my recovery. It's working for me. I feel great and blood sugar is great for the first time in years. I am still only 3 weeks into "Keto" or should I say "Bariatric Keto", but it's awesome so far. Since I have been in ketosis (which happens to a lot of WLS patients anyway shortly after surgery), I am losing weight at a very rapid pace (for me). I have loads of energy now. I do feel hunger, but I am satisfied quickly. I enjoy the foods I am eating a LOT. Moreover, the diet I have been following is doctor approved for me. I had my one month follow up yesterday with my surgeon and I went over my diet and workout regimen with him. He cleared me for all activity and had no issues with my diet choices at all. Cutting out processed foods and carbs and eating a high protein,, high fat (good fat) diet melds is like rocket fuel for your VSG in his opinion (with the modifications I described). I am not sure what you mean? In terms of age, I am 44. I am doing full 60 minute spin classes 5 days a week (with 2 in a row on Wednesdays (5am and 6am classes). I am probably overdoing it, but I feel really good after my classes. I have also just been cleared by doctor for all activity--no restrictions. So, I am going to start weight training again, starting tomorrow morning.

    4 week PO stall.

I just had my one month checkup. I’ve lost 28 pounds but about 10 was pre-surgery. I was consuming no more than 800 calories a day, with 90-100 grams of protein a day. I drink plenty of water. Dr told me to up my calories to 1000-1200. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

How long did it take you to get your surgeries?

I have Aetna insurance which required a 90 day pre surgery wright study. My dr had all the necessary info to demonstrate I was a good candidate, they turned I. The pre approval to my insurance on my 90th day and 7 business days later, I had my approval. Surgery was then scheduled about 10 days later, because of Christmas. I think insurances want you to jump through hoops hoping you’ll forget wanting the surgery!!!
  8. I am about 4 months out - up until about a week before Christmas I was losing a pound a day - awesome right? Well then I had a stall, and now I have lost about 10 pounds in three weeks, which, believe me I am very happy about. I've lost about 92 lbs (including 25 pre surgery pounds). Should I just relax and expect this slow down or can it pick up again? Thanks!
  9. Hello I was sleeved January 7, 2019. The hardest part for me was after surgery the pain in my chest from anesthesia. As far as any pain Im surprised no pain. Even my sutures haven't given me any pain. I'm down 18 lbs as of today the16th. I've eaten sugarfree jello;sf pudding; protein shakes; gf gatorade; cream soups strained; clear soups; sf popsicles and so far so good. Today I bought Pho Chicken broth and no problems. I have my 2 week checkup next week moving on to he next phase. But so far so good oh and I did have a meltdown and ate a small mashed potatoes and gravy sure did...

    Mindful Eating Help

And btw, it comes across as demanding. You are not having surgery in the next 10 minutes. Take a breath. Like slow down. Also the search feature should be your best friend, cuz a lot of your questions have been asked and answered...
  11. I too have the same pain you describe bodycando. My Sleeve was on 12/19/18. I did great for 2 weeks then suddenly started having pain exactly as you describe plus radiating around the back. Doctor sent me for a CT scan with contrast to look at the stomach. Incision and everything looked fine. No leaks. From there an ultrasound which revealed small gallstones and my pancreatic enzymes were elevated. However the doctors doesn't think its either of those that is causing the pain. She is convinced its the surgical stiches inside and says she had to go pretty deep and did reinforcement. So, I'm continuing with daily Actigall and hoping it will get better with time. I had to go back to work and I'm trying to push through with continuing to walk 3 miles daily. My hope is she is right because another surgery at this point would not be a good thing. She did say that if it was the gallbladder that eating would make me nauseous or cause vomiting and with the pancreas you will get very sick with fever etc.... So since I'm having none of those symptoms I'm agreeing that it's the incision. I do notice that after walking the pain is more intense...I feel that's because I'm stretching the incision site. Hang in there. I think we just don't give ourselves enough time to heal and we push to get back to normal too quickly.

    Calories for maintenance

You lost fairly quickly, which implies that you still have a relatively strong metabolism, so you have some work to do. As a very rough approximation of where you should be, take the average of your last couple months' loss; for every 5 lb (2.3-ish kg), that's about a 500 calorie per day deficit that you need to make up. For instance, I was losing at 10lb per month the last three months of serious weight loss, which works out to around 1000 calories per day deficit; I was averaging 1100 calories per day, and am now maintaining (for the past 6-7 years) in the 2100-2200 range. This will at least give you an idea of how large the steps up that you should be making to ease into your maintenance range. I started working toward maintenance at the six month mark when I was 10 lb from my goal (or about a month away) so I started increasing things then to slow things down; as this was early November, I in part just let the holidays happen and it took another two months to lose that final 10 lb, and I had minimal overshoot; I still needed to fine tune things from there, but I was pretty close by then.
  15. I guess Im lucky. I had HealthNet. I had my initial consultation in October of 2018 and completed the required testing/labs/appointments (probably 10 in all) by December of 2018. I was required to do 3 "weight management" visits with my PCP. Because of the Christmas holiday I was not able to get a surgery date in December but I am scheduled for next Tuesday 1/22. So it took about 4 months. I scheduled all my labs and specialist appointments and I really moved heaven and earth to get them all done as quickly as I could.

    50+

I am 72 and had my sleeve done 1-14-19
  17. I started the process in December 2016 and had surgery October 2018. I work for the state of West Virginia and our insurance required a 12 month medically supervised diet and 10% of your original weight lost. Took me more like 20 months to lose it. Once that was done, the pre-auth, denial, appeal, approval, labs, psych eval, nutrition classes took about three months all together. So if you don't count my diet period, only a few months. Hope yours goes fast! Mine was so drawn out that I had surgeons change in the practice I was going to, lol! Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Suboxone before sleeve?

If you're on suboxone for opioids like heroin I would definitely talk to your doctor! Stopping it cold Turkey IS NOT AN OPTION! You are on that for a reason and you might go back to using...which I hope wouldnt be the case if you just stop it! I am highly aware of opioids. I lost my brother almost 10 years ago and I do education speaking to schools about the dangers of heroin and opioids. I wish you all the best. Message me and I can get you in touch with someone who might be able to help you with questions and even getting off of suboxone! Jeannine [emoji8]

    ThermiSmooth Body Procedure

Anyone ever heard of this? I searched the forums and had 0 results. My surgeon's office offers this procedure called ThermiSmooth Body. Here's their description of it and a link https://www.newyoubariatriccenter.com/your-weight-loss-journey/life-as-the-new-you/post-weight-loss-skin-tightening/ I've never ever heard of this before. Has anyone tried this post-op for skin tightening? There are before/after pics at the link. "Do you have loose skin in your arms, legs or stomach? Are you interested in a non-surgical option for your New You? ThermiSmooth Body uses radiofrequency technology to gently and safely remodel collagen. By targeting the areas under the skin, we are able to tighten and firm loose skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite. This non-invasive procedure feels much like a hot stone massage. Treatments last 10 minutes per area and are performed over six sessions for best results."

    Please help!

Let us know how it goes with logging and what you find that your intake is. Doesn't seem like you're getting enough protein but you never know! Our stats are similar...I'm 5'4", was 243 day of surgery (10/22) and now 215. My surgeon says I'm a slow loser. I also have sleep apnea, diabetes and hypertension. The last two of which have resolved. No PCOS or bipolar...some anxiety that I take Wellbutrin for. Also, I'm meeting with my nutritionist at the end of the month to go over my food logs and see if there is anything I can do to help the loss or anything I've been doing that's hindering. I'll share info she gives me as well. Good luck! Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    First appt

I only have to do 3-month supervised diet and I saw my doctor on 1/10/2019 for the first time. My insurance doesn't have any waiting period but the doctor I picked has the 3 month supervised diet. I do like this facility due to they have everything in-house, psych, dietitian, cardio and they have a lifelong program that stands by you before and after surgery. I should be able to have surgery in April so fingers crossed...

How do you end a stall?

I hit my first stall and it lasted 3 months. I took a step backs and I was super honest with myself and realized I was adding in extra calories and breaking rules every day - not just occasionally. I am a year post op so I was lucky I made it 10 months months without a stall. (I am not beating myself up, I moved my family across country and it was a huge change, my diet suffered as a result) So I decided to change up how I was eating. Cutting the extra calories and getting back to basic simple meals to focus on my core nutrition for a while. Try a new recipe and cut down those calories for a week and see what happens for you.
