  1. Hello everyone! I am super new to this and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tricia, and I am a 37 year old mother of 2. My son is out of the house now and about to give my a grandbaby in October! My daughter is a teenager and very supportive of me. I smoke, which is something everyone wants me to give up...but what about the weight gain? Maybe the band will help me with that also. Has anyone else given up smoking after the band? I am very excited about going to see Dr. Spivak on Wednesday. I am also very nervous. I know I am ready for this, but if one more person asks me "Are you really sure you want to go through with it?" I think I will scream. Of course I am ready. I have been overweight since I was in high school well really junior high but very overweight since high school. I am 5'3" tall so 10 pounds looks like 50. I am so tired of looking in the mirror and being disgusted at what I see looking back. I am normally an upbeat person, but I am miserable when it comes to my body. I really hope they approve me for surgery. The only other stomach surgeries I have had are my two babies by c-section. I totaled my BMI and it was 38. I've heard it has to be 40, but on one of the websites I went to it said I was a candidate.(I guess because I'm short!?) Anyway, I feel like if they won't do it because I'm not at 40 I will just cry...fall into a deep depression and eat my way to 40. Not that I want to, but I'm afraid that is what would happen. I want this so bad! Not just to be able to look in the mirror and be happy, but to be healthy for myself and my family. I want to be able to walk normal again, without swelling and pain. I had reconstructive surgery on my ankle about 5 years ago and fusion in 2004. I feel that the more weight I can take off my weak ankle, the more active I can be. One more thing before I go. I have been doing alot of research on doctors close to me. A friend of mine used Dr Spiegel and loves him. I'm sure I would feel the same way, but I have chosen to go with Dr. Spivak. I could not handle the office staff of Dr. Spiegel. After my first emergency surgery on my ankle, I LOVED my doctor. BUT...The office staff there was so rude and uncaring that I would cry on the drive to his office. People need to understand that we are going through a major life change and a little smile goes a long way with some. Sorry this was so long. Good luck to everyone! Love and Laughter, Tricia:nervous
  2. Faith, thanks for responding, and when I think of it that way you are right. Technology at this rate is probably going to peak in 10 years and I'm sure the problem of obesity will be cured with something even better. Thanks for helping me look to the future. If I can get 10 years I'd be tickled also, but I don't want to have problems in 5 years as I am reading on these posts. But then again at my age the monopausal years are the big weight gain years and after 60 weight tends to decline. My goal is to live at least to 85 so I can see my 10 year old daughter fully an adult. I was doubting that would happen if I entered my 60 obese...even entering 50s obese is asking for a road of possible weight related complications, ie. adult onset diabetes, hypertension, etc. I know you know Faith...sometimes I'm writing to solidify things in my own mind.
  3. Less invasive. No cutting of my organs. Short recovery. 20 years of poor success and continued weight gain on my part.

Is this really only a tool?

It is now 3 years later........I lost what i wanted to lose, 65 pounds.......sometimes I gain a few but it is so easy now to just give up that ice cream and get right back on track. In my "other" life that 65 pounds would have ca me right back as soon as i over ate, THERE IS NO OVEREATING NOW......just bad choices !! That 1/2 pound of pasta that used to fill me up is now less than a cup and i remain full for the rest of the evening. I no longer look for a snack late at night. You will also find there will be some foods you canot tolerate. I am very lucky because those for me are the things that i always struggled to give up on other diets and believe me you LOSE the desire for these foods......for example I was a beef eater, loved it and now it does not agree with me and I no longer want it.......AMAZING !!! Doesn't faze me to feed my family a roast and then sit down and eat the potato and veggies and a salad !! In the past that would have never happend because I didn't have the will power to have a little piece or as always I would think "i will have it tonight and start my diet tomorrow !!" When you find you are eating too much you just get a fill and you are right back where you started !!I have friends who had the by-pass around the time I had my band, they are now dieting big time because of weight gain, i just watch what I eat for a few days and the weight starts to drop again........but it is a TOOL........soda, ice cream, puddings, anything liquid goes through the band and you do not fill full..dangerous foods because there is nothing to keep these things from making you gain weight. The band is the best thing i have ever done for myself and the best way to lose weight and keep it off but YOU have to work with it................it is so very worth having done !!! Good Luck !
  5. :help:I'm post-vacation and so bummed. I was away for three weeks, and we either had to eat out a lot, or the people we were with were terrible eaters (heavy grease, old food, lots of Pasta and rice, which I can't eat - they hurt), so I ended up eating out some more. I was fairly active, but I came home with a 9-pound weight gain. If that's not bad enough, I CANNOT get back on track. I'm scared to post this, because I don't want a gazillion lectures, etc. I've been banded since December of '06, and I KNOW what to do. Why am I having such a hard time getting back to doing what's right? Could anyone else, who has had this happen, share what toasted their buns back to eating like a bandster? Thanks. __________________

    Why are YOU Fat?

I was fat because I ate more calories than my body burned. That simple. But in all honesty, it all started with a brain tumor (on my pituitary gland) which basically wreaked havoc on my hormones and adrenal functions. But once that got treated I still found it difficult to lose because I'd developed all kinds of bad habits when going throguh the terrible depressing 200+ pound weight gain in a 6-month period from the tumor. Anyway, that's behind me. It's up to me to lose the rest and, with the band, I know I can!

Lucky # Sevens- July 07 Bandsters

hello! i was banded july 13, 07 by dr. huacuz in tj, mx. everything seems to be going well. i lost about 9 lbs on the 5 day full liquid pre-op diet and then was weighing about 14 lbs 7 days after surgery. after incorporating more solid/mushy foods in the second week my weight loss kind of stalled. in fact, i gained about 4 lbs. while on the phone scheduling the suggested 4 week fill- dr. huacuz suggested i come immediately for a fill because of the weight gain. i (reluctantly) made the appointment (15 days seemed quick, but i trust him) so off i went back to mexico. it went great, i have a little restiction (1.8 cc in a 5 cc band), but not too much...i am eating about 1/2c to 1 cup of food...seemingly one third to one half of what i was eating before. i do find i have gas...a lot of gas. i've never really been able to burp or pass gas very easily, and suddenly it's absolutely uncontrollable! i am feeling a little unladylike, but i suppose it is a fair trade. all in all...it's going great! i feel wonderful! i've shed a few more pounds (15!!) my scars are healing very nicely. it's been a great experience thus far!

    August '07 -- Compare pre-op diets

This is what I don't understand...everyone thinks the pre-op diet is so rigorous, but the truth is that this whole process is rigorous and anything you can do to ,help your body adjust to a new lifesyle will be good. Any steps you can do that will satify your hunger and keep you from craving or obsessing on food will help. And if you can lose weight and get your body shifted over to the weight loss side rather than the weight gain side is also a plus. Lets look at what a benefit the preop can be and not how hard it is.

    June 2006 Band Crew

I was referring to Barbara, but thats ok Lisa. I need to change my ticker to reflect my weight gain from the unfill for 3 months, I haven't been 155 in 4 months, 155 would make me happy again. I know I have accomplished a lot, but when I came sooo close to goal and then hit this wall and went backwards it has become very frustrating. I know I have no reason to gripe because a lot of you haven't lost what you have wanted, but I was trying to vent a little of my frustration to my junebie friends. Not mad at all Lisa, I promise!!!
  11. Its really not bad at all. The lady I met with sooooo nice. They have even called to check on me to see that I was approved. I will certainly do my post-op follow up with them. Mine lasted a couple hours (mostly just BS'ing and talking about family history and my weight gain historty) They basically want to see that you are mentally compotent enough to undergo the surgery and comply with the post-op regimen and make the lifetime commitment this requires. I took the MMPI (Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Inventory) which she had me do about 376 true/false questions out of 500 something. Let me tell you these questions, alot of them were sooooo silly like, " I would enjoy the work of a carpenter". or "I hear voices telling me to do bad things". etc. I had a good laugh, you will too. I had fun doing mine. If I could afford to see her regularly, I would, just to chat with her. LOL Good luck and don't worry a bit! They want to help you get approved!
  12. I have been very very good about logging all my intake of food, my activities, and my weight every day (Note: I know a lot of people don't like to weigh every day. However, I find that I get very attentive to those .6 and .8 pound fluctuations and it keeps me in line better, rather than adjusting to seeing 1+ pound weight fluctuations over a week or so...my theory being that if you get used to the "pound-plus" on the scales you are more likely to backslide into 2-3-4 pound fluctuations....just my own philosophy). I have noticed a definite correlation between the days I "overeat" (over 950 cal) and the subsequent weight upswing within about 2-3 days. I was out on the web looking for guidance on just how long it takes before the "bad days" turn to noticeable weight gain. I found this interesting.... Temporary weight gain could appear quickly after a large meal or two, but that does not mean that if you've overdone it, you're doomed. After all, daily weight fluctuations are normal. Generally speaking though, if you keep your calories burned in line with your calories consumed over a week's time, you shouldn't gain -- 3,500 calories is equal to one pound. If you do have a surplus of 3,500 calories by the end of one week, most people will be up a pound from the prior week. The most worrisome is the gradual weight gain that people experience, which is more likely to represent new pounds that you truly gain over time. Keep a food diary to try and help combat this gradual weight gain and (you knew this was coming) exercise regularly!

    Marchies in July

Hey Everyone!!! Been gone for last week on an AP Science Conference in San Antonio Texas---some might think that would be fun----but you would be wrong!! I stayed in a dorm apartment at UTSA with my BF with now tv and very limited internet access---in fact it would kick me off every five minutes so I just gave up. Did pretty well on my weight--no weight gain, but no weight lost---aargh yet another plateau! Congrats Juli on the Tour de France challenge! I tried to get my ticker to update ---but alas no---I did not make the challenge-it has been raining so much here in Dallas and I tried to ride in San Antonio but it was raining everyday I was there--so I only did 75 miles of the 220--but I did do many workouts at the gym ( so that has to account for something ) Momlambert! Congrats on the babies!!! demsvmejm If you want to do a while you were out at my house I leave a key he he!! Tammy, Kethrya, Carol stay strong sisters!!! Got two weeks left of summer--:faint:

    I Did It!

I'm at Day 17 since my surgery and I think I may have turned the corner today! I have felt like my belly was wrapped in barbed wire for most of the time but today seems better. Nobody prepared me for the swelling and weight gain.....but it's normal (it's Water from the IV's mainly). At my follow up they told me to expect swelling for 6-8 weeks, and I've heard some people say theirs lasted longer. Best wishes to you in your recovery and your future life as a thin woman with a flat belly!! Yea!!!!!

TracyK....isn't it great to know that the weight gain is not permanent anymore??? I just love the fact that this is not going to be yet another yo-yo attempt at dieting. This is the real thing and that little band will help US achieve our goal!! Theresa... woooo hooooo on the ring. It's all those little NSV's that keep us going!! Today I'm going to wear a pair of capri's that are a size 14/16W and I had set aside for when we go to Disney on the 21st of August. They didn't fit when I bought them a couple of weeks ago and now, here I am wearing them!!! Time to get dressed and head on down for our fill. Everyone have a great day and remember... WWJD??!!!
  16. I feel your pain. I was banded in March of '06 and have recently put on 10lbs and am exercising like CRAZY!!! My band was deflated entirely for three months and I recently got 2ccs added back into it but am still gaining weight. I work out 6 X a week and don't feel like I look any heavier but am going nuts mentally from the weight gain. I am completely and utterly lost on why I am gaining weight because I am not eating very much and exercise constantly. Any advice on how to get back on track? ~Liz~ 03/10/06 241/165/160 :help: 5'8''

Any Bandsters who are also AA's?

I had the opposite problem. My drinking was one of the biggest contributors to my weight gain. I liked drinking the sugurey stuff. I gave up my habit about 1 week before starting the preop diet. It has been ruff because that is what I did on the weekends and now it seems as if there is nothing to do. Friday nights just arent the same anymore.

Do you have under active thyroid?

Oh my lord!!! I am having major problems right now with the same thyroid problem. I just logged on to see what was new. I have lost three lbs in 4 months. I need to lose 10 all together before I see the surgeon in 3 weeks and I can't lose anything. I am so hungry. I saw a new Endo last week and he is running all kinds of blood work including type 2 diabetes. I was diagnoised 30 yrs ago with Hashis. Till three yrs ago it was not a problem and I had a doc who decided to cut my meds in half. I left him and went to a new doc who agreed with the first because of the TSH results. I have so many problems since from a 70 lb weight gain to high cholestrol and full body sweats, and no energy to name a few. The new doc seems to want to listen to me. I told him I want answers. He agreed to help me. He even agreed with the lapband. His last words as we left the office were ..We will get you through this and help get the weight off and answer the other medical problems. Hope you all do well. Thanks for letting me vent. I love this sight. Linda
  19. Hi jubie. I gained weight while in the hospital too. I went into surgery dehydrated from the preop diet and of course I had an IV running, so the extra fluids are what caused the weight gain. It will come back off in the next few days. No worries. Im 5 days post op now. Good luck to you!

    Shopping at Sams Club

Careful with Boost. That is a product designed for people who need nutrution and weight gain. It is NOT designed for dieters. I like Matrix. I like it because the quality is high, the protein/calorie ratio is perfect, I like the flavor, and I don't have to mix it with milk. Milk... blehhh unjury is another great quality Protein and you can mix it in anything, Jello, broth, juice, milk, whatever your preference. Isopure is also another high quality protein but it tastes what like dog pooh smells like. It's just disgusting. Stay away from the bullets, shots, and shooters. The protein quality is about the lowest on the market right now. Regarding protein quality Matrix, Unjury, and Isopure are the best and most consistant quality products on the market. They range in quality (scale from 1-100) from 80-100. The bullets, shots, and shooters (stuff in a plastic test tube) are between 4-6 depending on brand and flavor.

    Post Disbanding weight gain

When I got banded, I had all the feelings of "maybe this isnt necessary, I really SHOULD be able to do this on my own". But it was a major reality check to really consider the fact that statistically, it was 99.9% certain that I wouldnt and couldnt do it on my own. I really think I'd try to have the same reality check post banding. Statistically, the weight's likely to go back over time. I really would consider another surgery personally if I possibly could. But in the meantime, I think exercise really comes to the fore as a tool to prevent weight gain. The times in my life that I've been successful in the medium term in keeping off a reasonable weight loss - like over 20lb which is all I had to lose in the old days before babies - were the times when I exercised - and I mean hard - like an hour of hard cardio like running almost every single day. Whenever my life changed and the commitment to exercise waned, that's when I gained weight. Same after I had my babies. First baby, no problem, I continued with a really vigorous walking routine with him in the pram. Second baby, and a toddler as well, the exercise fell by the wayside, and I ballooned. Exercise really is your best defence.

    snacking to much

I used to work midnights as well (part of my huge weight gain was from it). Is 1am a time that works slows down and you have more free time? I figured out that I was snacking out of sheer boredom. Between 1am and 2am the night started really dragging on. Can you try taking a quick walk around the boat, the bldg, something? Maybe just to clear your head? Or can you take a 10 minute break and read a chapter in a book? Working mids is really rough on the body. You've been doing really well though, keep up the good work!

    WLS success stories in advertising

Up here in Canada a lot of the advertising which is allowed south of border is simply not permitted. Much of this which is forbidden has to do with legal and medical services; we also have funny laws covering prescription pharmaceuticals. The way I heard about the lapband and the Toronto Lap Band Centre, the place were I went for my surgery, was through a girlfriend who had seen one of the surgeons interviewed on a local morning show. She had heard me whining about my weight gains for a long time and thought that I might be interested. Before I knew about the lapband I was thinking about extensive lipo but was terrified of the pain. The rest is happy history.
  25. Oh thank you so much for getting back quick Grace!!!! & what a GREAT experience! I didnt think fill centers used fluoro so wooohooo & double woohoo highland is much closer than salt lake for me! (in fact I work in american fork lol) im much more excited about going now! What did he say about weight gain? I contacted my surgeons office (the nut) & she said its quite normal but obviously its not! I also have a 9.75 band so I hope they are just as good at filling it! (heck now im considering canceling my trip to mexico & just doing the fill here!)
