  1. Talking to the Lap Band veterans - can you remember back to that first week after your surgery? What was the biggest obstacle for you? What was the hardest part of your recovery in particular? Thank you in advance for sharing your stories!

    Looking for your experiences

Hi Bonnie - I had given up dieting and just decided I was me and that was it, however, I have had several deaths in my family that were diabetis related. I have always been happy and active, have a great husband and family and so I was not too worried about it all. I am not diabetic yet, but I do have pretty severe osteoarthritis of the knee and am looking at a total knee replacement and decided it was time. I researched for quite a while, talked with those that had both good and bad experiences and then talked to my PCP. He actually recommended my particular surgeon as the one he would go to if he needed surgery so I went and decided to go forward. Not knowing your specifics and if you have ever had surgery, this procedure was pretty easy for me, I am 4 weeks out, down 26 lbs and waiting for my first fill. I have had to work at it, I have always been able to lose weight, but keeping it off is another story. Allready I can feel amazing improvement in my knees and energy level. My advise is to check all your options and talk to people you trust and you will make the right decision for you. There are lots of options now and diffferent ones are best for each person so you and your doctor will decide what is best for you. If you decide to do the band I wish you luck, and know if I can do it you can.

    Looking for your experiences

It is one of the best things that I have done for myself. Many of the issues that I had, sleep Apena, High Blood Pressure have all gone away. I still have sleep apena but I do not have to use the machine and/or dental device. However I still use it once or twice a week. I do feel a lot better and able to do a lot more things than I have before. One thing I will say and you will notice on here is that everyone is differant on how much, fast etc. they loose the weight and keep it off. This is for you and your self and no one else. I can say that my New Years resoulation that I have been able to keep for the last 2 years and that was to loose weight and keep it off. I think a lot of people can atest to that. If you have any questions or need help with a letter just ask. I have some examples that you can use. Chris

    When To Get A Fill???

I struggle with this also. Had 3cc at the time of surgery May 24th then had 1 cc two months ago. Would like to get another ½ cc but I still get stuck sometimes (because I do not chew enough). I am at a standstill losing weight, have not lost any in 3 weeks. So do I take the chance on getting more fill, I think I am in the bandster hell I keep hearing about. Sigh
  5. I was back in with dehydration a couple of weeks post op, but I was throwing up over christmas too Hope you are feeling better!

    Preop Loss

I start my pre-op tomorrow 3 weeks until surgery. I better lose, I barely get to eat anything. Ugh. Can't believe it's getting so close.
  7. Hi! I had my lap-band revision to sleeve exactly 1 month ago. I'm super happy and I feel more active than ever! I'm trying to get as much Protein that I can but I'm still find it difficult to eat much. My starting weigh was 175 and I'm at 158 right now. I haven't lost any weight in more than a week now so I hope I can break this stall... Overall great experience and my incisions are beautifully healed. 8. My Surgery is Friday March 20, 2009. I am on the pre-op diet for my second week now. They have me on meal replacement drinks for breakfast and lunch then a small high protein, veg. dinner. I have tried my best to stay on track but have broken the rules some. I had some peanuts as snacks on few days and 1 scrambled egg with little cheese one morning. Three of the days I had a small lunch instead of my normal slim fast bar. I find myself worried about swaying from the diet. I am hoping others also have done that. Any input would help.

    Clock ticking on making goal?

JamieLogical, I can't add my experience to help answer your question because I am new to this. Only 3 weeks out from surgery. But I do want to add that I've always enjoyed your posts. They are intelligently written and to the point. You actually responded to one of my questions earlier on and it really helped me. You seem to have a pretty good head on your shoulders and in my opinion will do fine with whatever this sleeve throws out at you. I seem to be loosing weight a lot slower than I expected (a phase in which I'm trying hard to get over) and I know you can relate. Good luck to you after the "honeymoon" phase!
  10. I have seen a LOT of posts on here from vets talking about the "honeymoon" phase and how much harder it is to lose weight and keep it off after the first year post-op. My weight loss has been pretty slow compared to a lot of (most?) people on this site. I was frustrated by that in the beginning, but I've embraced and accepted it for the most part these last 3 months or so. Post-op I lost just shy of 15 pounds the first month, less than 9 pounds the second month, and I've been right around 6 pounds per month since then (looking to be about the same for February). I still have 37 pounds to lose to get to goal and I'm almost to 6 months out. If I continue to lose about 6 pounds a month, I should reach my goal right at the 1 year mark. But it's probably unrealistic to believe my weight loss will continue at the same pace as I get closer to my goal, right? It's probably going to slow down in those final months. So, my question is, should I be worried? If I don't get to goal by the time I'm a year out, is it going to be incredibly hard to get there ever? My body seems just completely determined that I should only be losing 1.2-1.6 pounds per week. No matter what I do food and activity-wise, that is the range I lose in. Before Christmas I was a complete bum, not excising at all, not super careful about my food (had some Cookies and ice cream in there, still good on Protein though) and I was losing right at that pace. In mid January, I really stepped it up and got more diligent about my food and started working out 5 times a week and I've still kept losing at this exact same pace. I'm honestly fine with the pace, as there are many advantages to losing slowly. I just don't want to run out of time with my "honeymoon" period and get to the point where I can't lose anymore before I get to my goal.
  11. Has anyone experienced daily headaches after surgery? I'm 4.5 months post op. I take a Flintstones chewable Vitamin, VitronC Iron supplement, actigal (can't remember the exact name), protonix, D3, allegra, and zyrtec. I also get my Protein and fluids daily and around 1K calories. I had my surgery in another state so I can't see my surgeon but I do have an appointment with a new doc 4/13. Went ahead and set up that appointment because I know I'm due for blood work by 6 months post op. My blood work at 6 weeks post op was fine with D & Iron being low, which is normal for me. Just curious if anyone else has any experience or insight? I do exercise on average about 5 times a week varying between intense cardio and strength training. Not sure if all this info is relevant but better safe than sorry. Seems like every day for the last 2-3 weeks my head hurts. I think it's probably allergies because it's in the forehead/temple area and I have a history of chronic sinus issues and allergies but I'm worried it could be something with a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Any thoughts?
  12. So here's a weird happenstance. I was super upset 2 weeks ago because I only lost 1lb all week. This week, on the other hand, I dropped 4.5lbs in a week. Now here's the weird part. The week before my 1lb loss I was eating well and going to the gym The week before I lost 4.5 lbs I was eating my sisters confectionary (like chocolate and sugar and everything we should not eat ever) and skipped the gym a few days. So why did I lose more weight? My theory is perhaps because I was eating too few calories beforehand... I was eating 550-900 cals per day the week I only lost 1lb and closer to 1200 when I lost 4.5 I am by NO MEANS saying any of us should eat any of the JUNK I was eating, it's not good at all. Like so bad that I was dumping. But isn't that weird? Obviously I need to focus on eating more because it helps. Healthier things that is. I only ate that crap because of the holidays. I feel like if i let myself splurge from time to time for special occasions then I won't eat crap on the daily - Kaylee Ann ~ Surgerversary 6/11/2012
  13. Ok, so I am supposed to have my surgery next Wednesday, November 7th. This has been a long process from the start because the hospital doing my procedure just started doing lap bands, and they didn't really have their shit together to begin with (pardon my language). I went to my seminar at the beginning of August, and they just finally finalized the surgeon fees 2 days ago, and finalized the hospital fees last week. They also made a mistake on when I wanted my surgery, when I told them from the beginning that I wanted it the week of the 5th because that's the only time I have off work. (Did I mention I have also worked at this hospital for almost 10 years and have never seen such disorganization on their part?) Long story short, it was conveyed to me by the bariatric center that since I am self pay, I would have to put a down payment down, and would be able to pay the rest off with a payment plan. I went to see the surgeon yesterday, and they were going to make me pay their fees upfront. I was like "Whoa-that's not what has been told to me for the last few months, and I never gave the bariatric center the impression I would be able to pay you upfront. It was my impression that they had spoken with you specifically about me and it was agreed upon between the surgeons and the bariatric center that I would be able to do a payment plan." So, the financial services rep went and talked to someone, and came back, and said that was fine, since I had already gone this far and seen the doctor, that they would let me pay the remainder off over a 12 month period. I signed a contract stating as such. So, this morning, I went and had all my preop tests-chest xray, upper GI series, pulmonary testing, EKG, labs, and a meeting with the dietician. So I'm psyched, right? Then I leave the hospital, and my cell phone rings. It is the financial services girl from the surgeons office telling me that she talked my surgery over with the doctor, and that they are not going to let me do the payment plan, but are instead requiring that I pay upfront. Granted, they did offer to give a discount, but I still do not have that money lying around, and made it clear from the start that I did not. So I am extremely frustrated right now. Now I feel like I can't necessarily even trust the surgeon doing my surgery or the bariatric center. My grandma offered to loan me the required money, but I am having such mixed feelings about what transpired that I don't even know what to do. Sorry for the lengthy post, but does anyone have an opinion on this?? Thanks! :help:

    Chest Pains

I am 4 weeks out and totally not in sync with the guidelines. Get a small 30cc cup and drink from that for awhile.
  15. Wow!!!!! Thinking back to the first week. Geesh let's see what was the hardest. Not eating regular food and sticking to the liquids until time for the next food phase. Unlike others I was hungry after surgery and I was given two ccs during surgery. I didn't get my first fill until four weeks later. Trying to not eat more than four oz per meal.
  16. I am 2 weeks post op today and started on 2nd part of diet which consists of cream Soups, oatmeal , applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt etc- but I've been hungry all day and sick of soups- so I cheated and had a cup of dry Wheaties Cereal :0/ I chewed it thoroughly and it went down fine - tasted soo good too !! But now I feel guilty and scared that I might have a bad reaction or something - I feel fine but my doc specifically said only liquids first month ! Ughh - this is not easy by any means ... Sorry just needed to vent guys :0( Getting back to routine and getting off this weight
  17. I had the same type of instructions. The 2nd part was so much easier than the 1st 2 weeks of Clear Liquids. Full liquids is so much easier. You can do it! Good luck. Karen
  18. Hey Welcome to LBT! I usually do weigh every morning (when I weigh the lightest) But you'll notice more of a difference if you weigh maybe once a week. Pick a day that you want to weigh and you'll be happier with the results other than weighing everyday and not seeing the scale budge. I hope this helps.

To Weigh or Not to Weigh

You'll get yes and no answers on this one. For me, weighing daily is not something that works for me because my weight fluctuates so much. It goes a long way (no pun) for my self-esteem when I see consistent weight LOSS and not ups and downs. Therefore, I weigh once a week on the same day (if possible) wearing a bra and panties.
  20. I've been a daily weigher for a long time, even before banding. About 2 weeks ago, I stopped. Now, I'm going to try weighing once a week only. I was getting too tied up in what the scale said. I do wonder about the accountability factor, but am working on other things like tracking what I eat, and paying attention to how I feel and how my clothes fit. Like so much else in bandland, the "right" answer varies from person to person and time to time. What I've learned that has helped the most is to be flexible and kind of check in with myself to see if I need to tweak anything.
  21. GOOD LUCK!! U will be fine. After surgery I was fine a little sore and tired. Also i found keeping a pillow on my tummy and ice felt so good. i also could not sleep in my bed 4 3 weeks couch just felt so much better. The third day and so on felt pretty bad but by the end of the week you should feel lots better. The first day I thought there is NO WAY ppl go back 2 work only after a week, but I did and felt good.
  22. I waited six weeks from diagnosis to having my gallbladder out. During the six week period, my diet became more and more restricted. At the end, I was only eating milk toast, buttered noodles, and potatoe Soup. By five and 1/2 weeks out, I was in coninuous pain from the gallbladder, whether I was eating or not. The doctor wanted to move up the surgeon, but I didn't want to as I was having a second unrelated surgery at the same time as the gallbladder surgery. I made it to have my gallbladder out as scheduled, but the doctor who did the surgery told me, after looking at my gallbladder, that it would have ruptured if I waited another 24 hours. Ask your doctor / whoever is reading your labs there recommendation. It depends on how easy your surgery is going to be and how quickly you recover if you will be well enough to travel.

    Got sleeved today

Congratulations Amyecpa! Yes, I had that dry heaving and nausea even with the medication. I always have it after I have anesthesia. Even with the anti-nausea medication, which they could only give you every 4 hours, I had dry heaves about every 2.5 hours until I could get my dose. I would unhook my legs and unplug the IV and walk anyway. That gas that gets trapped in your chest that doesn't feel like gas but does hurt will go away on day two if you walk. I'm so sorry you're having a rough time. Day three, you will be a new person. I promise. Hang in there!
  24. Lately i've been getting down on myself because I finally hit the 50 lb mark (2 weeks ago) so I was so excited and I thought I would be down another 3-4 lbs by the time I went to the doctor again. I went to the doctor on 4/25 and again this morning 5/30. Well I've been down on myself because I didn't lose anymore weight after that and was getting frustrated. I went to the doctor this morning and between my last visit and this visit I've lost 9 lbs. 9 lbs is alot of weight. Basically we should remember while we get down on ourselves week to week because we feel we should be losing more, we should look at the whole picture!!! Hope everyone has a good weekend!!!
  25. Hello, First of all Congradulations to all of you with the band ! I am going in on Tuesday June 5th ( wow two more days ) I am getting very nervous and major cold feet worse than getting married LOL It has been so many yrs since I have had a hospital procedure done I just feel lost wondering what to expect when waking up . I have heard the pain is pretty bad, what was your experience ? Any words of wisdom you would share with me I would be so grateful. I posted before but didnt get a response. I am just getting scared of the " what if's " that I read on the complication board. Plus I watched the video of the surgery kinda wished I hadn't , it looked worse than I expected. I dont mean to sound like a baby but now that the date is so close I am getting nervous and a bit emotional at the same time because it is such a life changing event. My weight has ruled my life physically and emotionally for so long I cant imagine what it would be like to get out of the vicious cycle of diet failure. Deep down I am so excited I cant seep. Does this make any sence Haha ? It isnt just an operation it is going to change my life I hope for the better. Anyway what is it like the day of the surgery and that week ? Anything that I should be aware of or that you wished you would of known? Thanks so much you have no idea how much I appreciate your knowledge:) Sincerely Kim
