Surgery, then surgery cancelled
Diahanna replied to harmonyoflife's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You should ask surgeon. Where I was sleeved, the doctor did a scope 2 weeks before my scheduled surgery where they put the camera down into your stomach and take pictures. I don't know if that is standard practice for most bariatric surgeons but i figured that he wanted to get an idea of what he was going to be working with by doing this procedure. The bloodwork and EKG was also done in advance of my surgery date to make sure that I was healthy enough for surgery. I would ask your surgeon what pre op tests/procedures that they run to minimize complications during surgery. I would also ask him under what circumstances would the surgery be cancelled. I know for my surgeon, if you hadn't follow pre-op diet and the liver wasn't shrunk, he would cancel surgery. (At least that's what I was told.) Good luck! -

Constipation after Gastric Sleeve
James Marusek replied to NewGuy47's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A few months after my surgery constipation became a major issue. Generally when I got really bound up (more than 3 days without a bowel movement) I would resort to using a glycerin suppository to unbind me. But you have to shove one of these up your rear end, then around an hour later, it would start to free you up. Once you were free you could resort to other remedies to help keep you on top this problem. These are some of the past suggestions from this site: Eat an apple each night before bedtime. But you must consume the skin of the apple in addition to the pulp. Smooth Move Herbal Tea Prune Juice (warmed) Prunes (4 in the morning and 4 at night) Magnesium citrate Insoluble fibers (Garden of Life Raw Fiber or Renew Life Triple Fiber). Haribo Sugar Free Gummy Bears (Too much of this can lead to problems in the other direction.) Aerobic Magnesium 07 Ground Flax Seeds (but don’t try to grind it yourself). Use 2 tablespoons per glass of water every night before going to bed. Bowel Clear (herbal blend) -
What can I eat during solid stage
BusyMom945 replied to nurse123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I stick with chicken and tuna a lot. I use a crock pot a lot to cook my chicken and make it really tender. For my veggies I have been sticking to califlower, edamane, brocolli, green beans (usually canned since they are softer), squash (spaghetti squash is amazing - I made this is mini turkey meatballs!). I also eat a lot of eggs. I actually got a couple bariatric cook books to learn some new recipes. It was nice because they lable the meals with nutrional fact and food stages. -
I also live in Houston, my surgeon is Dr.Galileo Villareal in Nuevo Laredo, MX, a 5 1/2 hr drive from Houston. Today is my surgery at 9 am. I paid $4099 total included lodging & hospital stay for 2 days. I'll be home on Sunday. My doc is awesome!!! My insurance did not cover this surgery, so I did some research into Bariatric surgery and found him through an agency. Say a prayer for me, I go in to surgery at 9am. What’s the best protein shake for my mom who seems to be lactose intolerant? She has tried Orgain and Premeier but the cause has like symptoms. I’ve been reading about whey protein, is that one good? And would The bariatric abdominal binder and stomach support be a good thing for her after surgery healing wise? Thanks In advance

unflavored protein powder recommendations?
Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 replied to Miss Topaz's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Hi there i find most of the flavoured ones way way too sweet. Here on the BariatricPal store there is Bariatric fusion unflavoured one that was good added to applesauce or gravy. I also really like their mixed soup pack, for savoury protein... -
Hello, I'm new here. I'm getting new insurance starting in the new year. I'll have Medicare with Anthem Mediblue Access PPO (I am disabled with mental illness). I have some questions about insurance approval. These are the bariatric surgery requirements for my insurance: For Part A- I have a BMI of 42, so I meet that requirement. For Part B- I have not had a primary care doctor for about 3 years. I go to clinics and the ER when needed. I have tried various diets, and have been using a Fitbit for the past 2-3 years. I do not know if this is enough for my insurance requirement though. For Part C- The mental health requirement; I do not take medication for my illness because I have literally tried almost all of them and they do not help, I only experience the side effects. Doctors know psych medication isn't for me. One of the reasons I am overweight is from all the medications I have taken over the years. My mental illness is under control and I will be able to handle surgery and follow doctor's and nutritionist's advice. I am also getting a new primary care doctor in the new year. Has anyone else had these issues and had their insurance approve their surgery? Has anyone been denied because of similar problems? Thank you very much for your help. ~Anna

I probably wouldn't have started with broccoli and beef. I was warned about broccoli. It has to be very soft cooked, practically mush. Like salads, it's the kind of food that can give you problems. I would be mashing sweet potato or sticking with something like that. As suggested, try chicken or tuna or a minced meat. I'd eat a beef, chicken or turkey meatball or patty or something like that. Lots of stews and meaty soups. Have you got a dietician? If not, I would consider getting a bariatric cookbook because I think it would be helpful. I also got toddler utensils. I have a "Frozen" themed fork that is tiny. It's a bit silly but it ensures that I could only take small mouthfuls. I'm four months out and I'm a fast eater. It's not a problem now but I used to be in pain all the time so you need to force yourself to eat slowly. Take a small bite, then set a timer on your phone for 60 seconds and don't even consider another mouthful till then. This part isn't forever. You will get through it. Good luck!

Opinions on sleeve vs. bypass?
catwoman7 replied to jayleensmama's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
actually, vitamins forever are now recommended for sleeve patients, too... here are the nutritional guidelines from the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. Pages 6-7 list the supplements required for each type of surgery ("SG" is the sleeve) https://asmbs.org/wp/uploads/2008/09/ASMBS-Nutritional-Guidelines-2016-Update.pdf -
I just had my sleeve done 11/24/2017. Thought I would respond and let you know some of my circumstances. I was actually supposed to have it done 11/22/17 but unfortunately, when I got to the hospital on my surgery date of 11/22/17, I was in atrial fibrillation with a high heart rate and low blood pressure. People with AFIB also have a danger of blood clots and stroke. I had discontinued my blood thinner 5 days before, in fact. Luckily, I had a bariatric surgeon who was willing to keep me in the hospital and get me out of AFIB, and then I was able to go ahead and have my surgery on Friday, 11/24/17. which I pulled through like a champ. I'm betting you will too. Good Luck!

Hello, Bariatric Buddies! TOMORROW is my big day! After about 32 years of being in the range of chubby to overweight to morbidly obese, TOMORROW is the day I take back my life! So excited and nervous! I have been wanting RNY for about 14 years now! I almost did it twice in the past, two false starts...looks like the third time is the charm! Excited and nervous. Packing my bag tonight OF COURSE I have been a procrastinator! Eating Sugar-Free Jello and water until my eyes pop (3 Day Clear Liquid Diet pre-op!) and I already lost about 10 pounds before... Would LOVE a Surgery Twin for the RNY or at least someone in the same week as me! <3 Thank you all for being here!

Weight Regain After Gastric Sleeve
DLovelySleeve replied to DLovelySleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey Jenn1, Thanks for the tips! Yes, I am excited about a fresh start for the new year. I will definitely do the things you mentioned. I feel like we sacrifice so much as bariatric patients and the last thing I want to do is throw it all away. I'll be weighing myself today so I can update my profile. I've been afraid to because I know deep down inside thatIi am no longer in Onederland. *sigh* -
why do people assume
Healthy_life2 replied to jesslynn32288's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's ok for people around you to be concerned about any major surgery. Reassure them you are going to be ok and health is your priority. Yep, the easy way out is a common comment when people think bariatric surgery. Just rise above any negativity and press on with your decisions in life. Any major change in life takes work. I weighed and log my food, learn how to properly fuel my body, got serious about exercise, Most of the work I have done is the mental/ behavioral side of weight loss. I had overcome my negative self talk. deal with poor body image about my weight and stress/emotional eating. All of the work was absolutely worth getting my health and my life back. -

Getting breast augmentation- what to do about sides of breasts?
GotProlactinoma replied to NYC1992's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I’ve been looking at before and after augmentations / lifts of post WLS patients and when shown from the back, that side and back fat seems to be gone. I think you will need to weigh whether to go with a surgeon used to male to female surgery, or one who specializes in Post bariatric. Or have two surgeons consult with each other WITH YOU no matter which one performs your surgery. They each specialize in getting the great look their patient wants, but you have two different special needs. Your surgeons work for YOU. I’m sure you will find the solution. For straight up post WLS boob lifts and augments, that side fat is gone after, though. So they know how to whatever it to make it gone. Good luck to you in all things! -
HEALTHY Vegan/Vegetarian Recipe Swap and Pics!
Little Green replied to Newme17's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
@Newme17, girl you are the bomb dot com. You too, @Apple1. I've been reading through this thread for several days (lots of the "somebody liked a post..." notifications you've been getting are from me! LOL) and I'm finally to the end! I'm so thrilled to find some other bariatric patients eating plant-based. Thank you for sharing your recipes and your passion/knowledge!!! Love it! I'm reading Proteinaholic now based on your recommendation (as well as reading through that thread so be prepared for more notifications! ). I haven't searched through the entire forum yet but if y'all haven't read How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Greger, you gotta get on it STAT. It is so thorough, so well-researched and well-cited, and so compelling. It has changed me and my husband to be plant-based and my therapist has ordered it as well. You can also check out his videos on YouTube (NutritionFacts.org) if you can't get the book just yet. (But the book is still the best!) I'm about six weeks pre-op at this point and planning to eat fully plant-based between now and my liquid diet. Due to the restriction in food volume intake I know I will almost certainly have to supplement with dairy products to hit at least 50g protein, but I plan to make as much of my protein plant-based as possible. Definitely going to be a lot of pureed beans and bean chilis until I can eat more! -
I called today to check on the preauth and she told me I was approved!!! Woohoo! I had a "oh crap" moment because she said I was approved for surgery TOMORROW... um...? But it was just a dummy date they put on the request. So I called the bariatric office to confirm and they said the coordinator wasn't in the office but she'd call me tomorrow or Friday to set up the date and pre-op labs! I'm kinda sick with anxiety, I'm thrilled but my stomach is just roiling and twisting with knots. I probably have around six weeks before my surgery now and it seems like it's next week. It's been 14 months since I decided to pursue WLS and almost 10 months since my consult! Long time coming, but it'll be worth the wait!

Christmas Round-Up
SummerDream replied to Apple203's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@Apple203 I have been using chewable multivitamins from Bariatric Advantage. My dietician told me that right after my surgery to grind them and sprinkle it on my applesauce (worked great!) and now I cut them in half and eat them that way. I eat 2 tablets daily and they taste pretty good. https://www.bariatricadvantage.com/item/advanced-ea-multivitamin -
