I got my band on 2/28, and experienced those horrible first two weeks, then after I felt better, I had very little appetite. I thought, this is great, look how little I am eating. I have lost 27 lbs. (including weight lost on the one week liquid diet). I know that is outstanding and I am thrilled. My problem is that I am now hungry. I'm on soft foods and I think I'm eating way too much. This is what I've eaten today: Breakfast: one egg, a slice of chopped up kielbasa (polish sausage) Snack: yogurt Lunch: The insides of a subway tuna wrap (with lettuce, tomato, pepper) I also had two cups of coffee before Breakfast, and some Water in between! I chew everything well, I've experienced no problems, no PB's (thankfully!!!). I'm scheduled for my first fill on 4/19. I can't imagine what's going on inside me. I think I must have no restriction at all. I'm worrying that I'm somehow going to screw this up. I mean, can I "blow up" my stomach?? Please help me! Thanks Mayra

I was banded on the 23rd! Last week was my 1st week back to work, it went well. I was sore but I would get up and walk around to feel better (sitting on my butt for 8 hours). Anyhoo, I was on mushy foods so I took tuna salad, sf Jello, yogurt and a banana. We have a good cafetria so I would get scrammble eggs and some Beans for Breakfast. That actually would fill me up till about 12:30 and then I would have the tuna and the jello. Could never finish it all. YAY!!! Now that I am on the solid foods, I notice that I'm hungry more often, I don't feel satisfied. Is that normal? My 1st fill will be 9/20 and i'm thinking that will help with the hungry phase. Am i correct? Miriam

I finally have some restriction!!!!!! I went for my fill today and I now have 12.5cc in my 14cc band. My dr did it under floro and at first put in 1cc then I drank the stuff and it flew down, so he put another 2cc in. I have eaten really light today (yogurt, and mushie type stuff), but I think I feel tight. It feels almost like a knot in my stomach, but its in the upper part of my stomach. Is that what tightness feels like? Hopefully this will knock my numbers off the scale. My dh had his first fill today too, he had 2cc put in during surgery, and the dr said that he could only put in 3cc today, because the fluid was getting stuck. It's crazy the fluctuation in fills, I can't believe its taking me 12.5cc to feel anything!!!

Current Mood: Good:thumbup: Well, as much as I enjoyed the cauliflower yesterday, I paid for it dearly. A couple of hours after I ate it and several sips into my protein shake I was struck with debilitating gas pains. I have heard others compare this type of gas pain to labor with labor coming out on top.... they are right! Oh how I wished I could burp, or vomit or anything but no.... Instead I went on line and quickly realized that chemical intervention was required and it was going to have to be something OTC...Maalox to be exact (Gas X was actually recommended by name repeatedly but my corner store didn't have any)! With the aid of Simethicone, the gas storm subsided somewhat though I still had pain. I did not eat dinner. In fact, I took a Percocet, sipped some water to help the Maalox through and went to bed. Lying down helped. This morning it was all gone and I proceeded with caution. Greek yogurt and, dare I try it, 1/4 cup of unsweetened apple sauce. Well, the gas kicked in but not nearly as harshly as yesterday. This time I took a spoonful of Maalox and headed out of the house for a walk. It didn't seem to dislodge the gas so I decided to try warm liquid - decaf, about 3 ounces. I sipped it while I got a pedicure. Well at least that turned out well. The gas was still there but not as bad by the time I walked home. I decided to try for lunch because I actually heard grumbling and felt a bit hungry. Mmmmmm, 2 eggs in 1 cup of fat free chicken broth did the trick (ate about half). Not only was it mouth satisfying, but the pains went away too after a few much appreciated burps. Since lunch...um, let's just say if there were a dog around, it would be getting blamed for the noises coming out of whatever room I am in. Wow! That cauliflower is finally making itself heard and it's not pleasant but boy does it feel good. To paraphrase a famous quote, "A fart by any other name would still smell as ...." Well, you get the point.

Hello fellow Bandsters, I haven't been to this site in a while but I figured it's the place to be considering I've hit a rough patch lately. I'll try to keep it simple. Sometimes I wish I weren't banded. It sounds silly, and maybe even shallow, but there are times I just want to be able to eat something without thinking about it, or eat and drink at the same time. (Sometimes I'm thirsty when I'm eating!) I still feel uncomfortable when I go out to eat with my friends and the waiters/waitresses constantly ask if there's something wrong with my food since it's not all gone yet. I've scheduled my 3rd fill for a week from Labor Day. I didn't want to do it before the holiday because I'm going back east to visit my family and didn't want to feel ill while I'm there. I hate feeling like I'm making concessions to my health because I can't shake my habit of eating. I've been banded since Nov 08, and I sometimes can't believe that I still haven't been able to reprogram myself to not eat just because I'm mad, or sad, or bored. I figured a fill would be the right choice because sometimes I eat WAY more than I should (of course there's still the fear I've stretched my pouch, though when I feel pain I ALWAYS stop.) but some mornings I can't even get yogurt down. I try to drink some water in advance, when I know I'm going to eat soon, to loosen it. I just hate feeling restricted (in this way) by my pouch. I've been pretty good. I gave up caffeine and sugar before my surgery, and haven't slipped on that. (Mostly I mean sweets and desserts, I know there's sugar in ketchup then sue me for eating it ) Sometimes I feel like I'm making myself crazy trying to be perfect, and other times I think if I actually were perfect then at least I wouldn't be wanting to eat Chinese food and french fries all the time. Sorry for the ranting. Anyone else make it through rough patches like this? I know that the joy of being thinner should outweigh my want to eat, but what can I say... Old habits die hard I guess. Thanks for your support!

Hi there! Im sure I dont go over 1100 calories a day, wine included. I weigh and measure everything I eat, and if I decide to go for that 2nd glass, then I'll just have 1/4 cup of frozen yogurt for dessert instead of the 1/2 serving. Besides, dont they say red wine is good for the heart? (in moderation, ofcourse!)

Ok... Sorry for your struggles! I had hummus, cottage cheese, yogurt right after surgery. All good sources of protein. I also had peanut butter... Just a spoon. My surgeon said the first month is all about water... Drinking water is going to help the inside stitches heal. Pooping takes a while to get right. You have nothing to poop right now so don't sorry about it.... Try some of these soft foods... Also broth is great! Good luck!

M1 - Cottabe cheese mixed with lc yogurt (couldn't finish it all) M2 - 6 oz of apple juice mixed with Daily 5 M3 - grilled fish, broccolli & cabbage (about a bite or two of each - except ate most of my fish - need the protein to build my muscles) M4 - grilled chicken, grilled veggies M5 Exercise - UBWO - Worked out at my gym at work today, couldn't get out of bed, this weather is not letting me get up in the AM, but I will work on it next week! My biceps and shoulders were worked to total fatigue - they are burning now! Exercise #2 - NOTES - Wt this morning 184.4 - OMG, I am getting so close to being out of the 180's! I must get my butt back in gear next week and get out of bed at 5 am. Although I haven't missed one exercise session, I have been doing it at all different times in the evening, afternoon, etc. It just works better for me when I do it in the am. So next week, that is my focus. Next week I begin week 4 of my BFL challenge, after completing next week, I will be 1/3 of the way finished - yay. I can't wait to take my measurements on the 19th - it will be my 4 mo anniversary and, it will be 4 weeks doing the exercise challenge. I am anxious to see what progress I have made and compare my pictures - even though I hated taking a picture of me in my bikini (I had to go buy one cause I didn't own one) - I think it will be neat seeing the difference after exercising for 4 weeks straight. Sorry, just can't share those pics with you guys, lol. Maybe after I finish the 12 weeks and I see a difference and I don't look so scary, I will share the pics. To all my journal buddies out there, thanks so much for all your compliments and your cheering me on. I am inspired by each of you and watching your progress motivates me even more. Together we can achieve this!

:confused2:Hi, my name is Jasmyn, and I was banded June 2007 but it has been very frustrating. I have only lost 20lbs. I seem to be stuck at a weight for a long time, and seem to have lots of difficulties with eating. I have had a couple fills, and even had some taken out because I was not able to get anything down exept Water. Many of my friends and family have told me I should just have the band removed. It is disappointing. The dr has done all the blood work, and said everything is normal, that it is either I am eating to much sugary foods, or not exercising enough. I eat a small amount at one time, a few bites at most, and seem to always have problems with reflux. Within a matter of minutes whatever I eat comes back up. I haven't figured out what I can and cannot eat and have just become frustrated about eating at all. If it isn't soft pureed food, I can't get it to stay down. Dr did say my protien and Calcium were slightly low at my one year checkup. I can't eat meat, too chunky. Any help would be good. I am thinking maybe a mentor might help. Daily foods I can eat, instant oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce, puddings, cottage cheese, cheese of any sort is usually ok. Soup, broths really soft noodles, small so, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti's Veggies, fruits, meats, eggs, breads are all problems! Any other suggestions?! Thanks! Jasmyn

Ajayb I was allowed fat free yogurt, diet soda, 1 cup of raw veggies a day, all the broth I wanted, water, protein shakes, 1 cup of canned fruit, and SF pudding or jello.

This will sound really silly, but I honestly do not know if my fat-free yogurt is "good" or not. I tasted it and it tastes TART. Is that normal? The date on it is in March so I'm kinda thinking that is what fat-free yogurt tastes like, if that makes sense! Also, do many put this in smoothies in addition to your Protein drink? Thanks! Kelli
-
Different brands taste different, and of course the flavor will vary with the flavor. Make sense? That's not helpful, I know, but I've tasted yogurt that's really gone bad, and man, you can tell. If it leaves a really nasty sort of burning flavor behind, it's gone. My favorite yogurt is Fage 0% fat strained Greek yogurt. It only comes in plain but I add a spoonful of all-fruit preserves to it and it's totally delicious. It's the thickest yogurt ever. YUM!

I get that feeling fairly often it's like I'm getting stuck it happens even with yogurt sometimes I stop and start again a do get stuck. I'm at what I call my grn zone and this is good restriction for me. I follow a high protein low carb diet but it feels a little like I swallowed a rock with first few bites. I take it as a sign to and not get stuck

Ug! Not "shrink-o"ing fast enough
Catherine55 replied to Catherine55's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will admit that yesterday was a particularly scant-eating day. I do focus on getting enough Protein generally though b/c I'm scared about losing my hair. Today, I had a lowfat yogurt, a soup (home made butternut squash soup), and I'll have salmon for dinner. I really want that scale to move, darn it! -
http://www.hoab.org/...rotein-sources/ Theres a link from my Nut she just posted Monday...maybe it'll help. "Can you still get enough Protein in while choosing meatless options? Yes, you absolutely can! There are lots of meat-free protein sources that can help you get the nutrition that you need without meat. Some of the best meat-free protein sources include eggs, low-fat or fat-free dairy products such as milk, yogurt, Greek yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese, Beans, nuts, nut butters and soy products, such as tofu, edamame, soy nuts, and soy milk."

I've given this lots of thought over the last few years and you're 100% right. It wasnt my band that got me up at 6 am this morning. It wasnt my band that tackled the kitchen and family room that needed thorough cleaning at 6.45 am. It wasnt my band that got me on the treadmill and pushed me through a 45 minute circuit workout and it CERTAINLY wasnt my band that made me work at 150% effort instead of just going through the motions. It wasnt my band that directed me to eat yogurt and a banana when the ginger nut biscuits were calling me from the cupboard. Yep, I wanted them for breakfast! And I agree with the amount thing. I eat about as much, many times less (calorie wise) than my five year old daughter. I dont know why but my body, despite how hard I work it, requires much less than many people's to stay at a healthy weight. It takes more than willpower to basically starve yourself for the rest of your life. But I'm quite comfortable with the fact that *I* know what I've achieved. I get a bit shitty when my mum says stuff like "this isnt teaching you any real lessons though". But overall, I'm happy with what I've achieved and that's what counts. People really are quite stupid though, arent they?

Has WLS Helped your autoimmune and endocrine issues?
mylighthouse replied to norcaligirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's great that you already have the healthy diet under control. I changed the way I ate before surgery.... had a meeting with my nutritionist a couple of months before surgery and she helped me so much. I started cutting back on the amount of carbs that I was eating (cut out all starchy veggies) and focused on high protein foods and healthy veggies. I was able to drop 20 pounds a month and a half before my surgery (my surgery was on November 14). Now at almost 5 months out, I focus on a high protein, low carb diet. As you probably know, they want you to get at least 60 grams of protein a day after surgery. I am getting 90-100 grams of protein a day, which has really helped me to drop the weight. I eat about a 3 ounce portion of protein (sometimes less) for lunch and dinner. Starting with my meat first, and then I am only able to eat a few bites of non-starchy veggies before I get full. I eat mostly chicken, sometimes fish or boiled plain shrimp, and sometimes steak or even the occasional piece of pork loin. I have never been a big breakfast eater, so I usually just have a few almonds and part of a Premier chocolate protein shake for breakfast. Eating high protein helps you stay full longer and low carbs keep you from really getting hungry. I also use Isopure non flavored protein powder to get my extra protein in. That stuff is awesome! When I first had my surgery, I was on full liquids for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed food, then 2 weeks of "soft" food. Then after that, I went to regular food. During the liquid, pureed and soft food, I used to eat cottage cheese, plain lowfat low carb/low sugar yogurt and a piece of string cheese everyday. I don't really eat those foods anymore, and because I've had such terrible constipation problems, I've had to cut all cheese out of my diet. -
Severe gas pains...what is the cause?
BetsyB replied to krstjump03's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some foods are sort of notorious for gas production--Beans, certain veggies, etc. So this may be a contributor, depending on what "normal food" means to you. I found, post-banding, that I've become lactose intolerant. Anything containing milk (except yogurt and cheese; the bacterial cultures in those prevent the problem) makes me terribly gassy. It's my understanding that this is not unusual post-bariatric surgery (but more common after RNY). I also have NO tolerance for sugar; I found this out when treating my just-discovered lactose intolerance with Rolaids---it didn't even occur to me to be concerned about the amount of sugar in a Rolaid, but it caused great gastrointestinal distress. So, two new intolerances identified at once! (Fun.) BUT--the most common reason for gas is swallowing too much air when eating. I assume you're not using straws or drinking during meals, since your doctor probably forbade these both. But also remember to chew slowly and carefully and don't talk while eating. (I don't mean don't talk during the meal--just not between putting a bite in your mouth and swallowing.) -
I had the surgery for my lapband Sept 2011. I lost 20lbs pretty quick and then it came to a crawl. They kept adding more and more Fluid to my band. From the 1st day I was able to eat soft food the Diarrhea started. I could be half way through a container of yogurt and I had to run to the bathroom. I called the nurse and they said, cant be from the band, that doesn't happen to banded patients only gastric bypass patients. ok so I thought its just my stomach getting used to the band. Two months go past and I have the same issue with solid foods. Again I tell my doctor and she insisted it was NOT the band. So now its been 4 years of not going anywhere because what if i have to find a bathroom and dont make it. If i had somewhere to be I wouldn't eat before I left. If i went to lunch with a friend or family I made sure that if i had other things to do when I was out that I did them first because after I eat I have to get home quick! Imodium helped somewhat. I would take 2 tablets BEFORE I ate. When I say everything gives me Diarrhea I mean everything. Dairy, Sugars, Fresh fruits and vegetables. I love salad but couldn't eat it because it went thought me in a matter of minutes! Last week I went to have some fluid removed. The last fill had been a year ago and since that time EVERYTHING was getting stuck, even water! I saw one of the nurse practitioners this time. I told him all the problems I had. He walked me down stairs to imaging and asked them to do am upper GI test to make sure that everything was ok. HE said everything looked good but he did take out the last fill which was only 0.02cc's of Water. I told him about the chronic Diarrhea and he said that he didn't think the band was causing it but when you mess with the stomach anything can happen. he asked me about my symptoms and when it would happen and I told him. He said he felt that it was IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Suggested I see a gastroenterologist or discuss it with my family doctor. I opted for my family doctor, because trying to get an appointment with gastro was nearly impossible. He said he felt so bad for me that i wouldn't leave my house! Said he would help me get my life back! Since the fluid was removed I actually have been eating less! Im guessing food was sitting on top of the band and not going into my stomach which kept me from feeling full. My doctor called in a prescription for Dicyclomine. It has worked wonders! I feel like a completely different person! I have had dairy and had no problems. Today I had a salad from subway. Ate it on an empty stomach and I feel great! If you are having the same issue, talk to your doctor about trying something for IBS! My life was a nightmare for the last 4 years and today... Dicyclomine has given me my life back!!

what was your experience w/unfills?
GoingforGoal replied to str1349's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The only negative experience I had was early on a mere few months post surg. I went in for my 3rd fill. I was so excited because fill #3 is the average 'green fill' Anyway, previously, my surgeon did my fills and this time his PA did. He made an aggressive choice and overfilled me (this is one of the primary reasons I insist on having only one person doing my cares/fills so that it's consistent). Well I went home, things were going slow..and that was just on liquids. Second day I tried yogurt..nope...fluids..nope. Nothing would go down AT ALL. I called in, they said to rest it for the rest of the day d/t inflammation. Next day I felt so dehyrated/weak, tried fluids-nope. Went in for an unfill. I hope any newbies reading this does not chalk this up as a 'negative', or a reason to not choose the band. there is alot of experimentation w/ the band (what you can and cannot eat, what is the green zone)..patience is paramount and don't expect all positives and all forward momentum. The positive to this experience was I knew what too tight was (ahhah) and I also know to no longer wait 2.5 days for an unfill regardless of what the PA says lol -
Great I have all the above ingredients except the yogurt. I'm picking that up today... That's for this recipe...

I had a fill on Thursday. I now have 3 cc in my 11cc band. I stayed on liquids Thursday and Friday and most of yesterday. I had some mashed potatoes last night and after just a couple little bites, my back started killing me. And now this morning I tried some yogurt, same thing. Just a couple bites and my back starts to really hurt, right between my shoulder blades and I start sliming a bit. Think I should call him and get some taken out? Or wait it out a couple more days and see if it gets better? This is only my 2nd successful fill since I got banded. I hat port problems and just got it fixed about a month ago, so I feel like I'm starting all over again!
