Hair Falling Out After Lap Band Surgery
jenjaw replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hair started falling out in September, maybe October. I was banded on July 1st. It seems to be slowing down now but my surgeon assures me that I won't go bald and it will stop when I maintain my weight for a while.I've been taking 5000mgs of Biotin since May. I've lost almost 90lbs and I agree, it has more to do with the weight loss than the surgery. My friend has the lapband and it was just her 1 year bandaversary. She lost 120lbs and was loosing hair too. Now that she has been maintaining her weight her hair has come back in.......and she never went bald, LOL!! We always say it's a small price to pay! -
Last Leg of the Journey
angeliquita replied to angeliquita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To be honest, I'm not sticking strictly to my plan so I will be more accountable from now on. I'm thinking about going back to my liquid diet for a month or so. Congrats on your weight loss! -
Carbs, Carbs, Carbs....somebody please help me !!!
juliarh replied to decamom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been doing low carbs since my surgery (about 10 1/2 mos. out) -- I DO NOT count the carbs in my fruits and veggies. I figure they're good for you, you should be eating them, so they don't count. I DO count the carbs in breads, pastas, cereals, rice, etc. You get the idea. Frankly, I think (and it's just my belief) that given our small stomachs, we need as much fiber as we can possibly get -- I still battle constipation and if I don't get enough fiber in, I'm miserable. I've also come to realize in my short time post op, that while we should restrict "bad" carbs, we need to emulate normal eating as much as possible. Our tummies are going to be naturally restrictive (seriously) -- and despite what we eat (even if we fall off the wagon), we're going to lose. I'm about 5 pounds from goal and am still losing at a pretty good clip, despite the fact that I'm upping my calories, upping my carbs, etc. The thing about weight loss, something I think we often lose sight of (and I do all the time despite almost being at goal and almost a year out) -- is that we don't lose at a steady rate. It's stair steps -- sometimes we lose a bunch, then our bodies stop. Then we lose, then we stop. It's our bodies' way of adjusting to the weight loss -- it's mentally frustrating (believe me!) -- but, we have to accept that we will lose as long as we are active and eating well. Now, if you're gonna binge on cake, well after awhile you're not gonna lose. But, eating well, moving our bods, and keeping the weight loss thing in perspective is what it's all about -
Hi, I am scheduled to start the pre op diet around the last two weeks of April. I am trying to figure out how this works. As I understand it, for two weeks I am only having shakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and a cup of either vegetables or fresh fruit. No carbs or starchy veggies. The written instructions say "if you need it" I can have a snack of a piece of fruit. Now, after surgery, there will be no fills for at least 6 weeks. During that time I am mostly going to be on liquids and towards the end soft 'mushies". So that is two months of starvation with no assistance or restriction. If I can not lose weight on my own, how am I supposed to get through this? I was recently following a normal carb counting diet for diabetics and every night I went to bed with sharp hunger pains in my chest area. I kept thinking that the pre op diet is going to hurt worse. Herbal tea helps but really, I just dont understand how this works. Does the smaller pouch cause less hunger pangs??? I really need an answer because I am wavering and do not want to change my mind about surgery.

Really Disappointed With Such Poor Weight Loss-Insight?
Territravel replied to samomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like your metabolism needs a jumpstart! I'm 15 weeks and i've been through two stalls. I had read somewhere, that taking in too few calories could hinder weight loss..I tried adding adding calories and fat to my diet, and lost three pounds..Same thing after the second stall. I'm not saying it will work for you, but it's worked for me. Good luck! -
Hello, I underwent gastric bypass surgery on June 22, 2016 and have lost 77 pounds so far. My highest weight was 250 pounds and my goal weight is 150. I am currently 173 but it has been so difficult to lose the last 23 pounds. I knew the weight loss was going to slow down but I did not know it would happen this early in the game. I noticed that I could eat more than I did in the beginning and it scares me; in fact it scares me so much that I have been thinking about doing the surgery again. It also does not help that I have an aunt who had gastric sleeve and shows off that she is now 130 by criticizing me. What should I do? I feel like a failure and it is so hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Lower legs
SerendipityHappens replied to 411angela's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lipedema, also called lipoedema is a disproportionate fat build up in the legs..It is not NORMAL fat and often it will not release even if you are starving. It's very possible you will never be able to lose all the weight in your legs. (I'm in the same boat) I started out with a 25.5" calf when I was 360... at 254 my calf is 22.5 not really much of a difference given more than a hundred pound weight loss but I'm hopeful that after I've lost all the excess everywhere else my body will release at least SOME of my calf fat! There is a doctor in Germany who is having good results with liposuction of the lower legs though and he specializes in lipedema patients.. so I guess there is hope for us yet! BTW don't confuse lipoedema with LYMPHedema.. lymphedema is swelling from Fluid.. lipedema is abnormal FAT. -
Hey everyone! My name's Sarah and I'm pretty new at this. I'm 20 years old and I'm in my 2nd year of college studying Education. This is going to sound really stupid but I'm not as bubble brained as I know this is gonna seem... I've been overweight my entire life and I've tried everything from Weight Watchers to Jenny Craig. My parents are really big on me losing weight and are on me all the time about it. I was watching MTV's documentary series "True Life" and an episode that happened to be on last night caught my attention, "True Life: I'm Obese" Well...as I was watching, I saw young people my age struggle with obesity and it made me realize.."the health complications they're going through could very well happen to me." I've been researching Lap Band for a few months now and was really up in the air about it. I saw the show last night and realized "I've come to a decision. I'm gonna go for it." I'm going for a consult next Monday and I'm really praying that I get banded...I guess..idk..I'm still really new at all of this..during my spring break. Well, that's about it. haha. Anything else you wanna know about me..just ask!! Sarah out!

Tears on my pillow
gypsyscribe replied to gypsyscribe's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I was just having a pity party for myself and needed to hear that others are out the there too. I guess the other probelm is that so many think that this is supposed to be like bypass and the wieght just falls off. My sister is trying to get bypass but lapband was what I wanted and I need to remember the reasons why I chose the band over the sleeve or bypass. I didn't want malnutrition or my stomach cut. I knew what I was getitng into. I just see so many and have met mant who 6 months out have gone from size 24 to size 8 and that would be a dream come true...but I never have had the time to ask how hard or easy it was to get to that point. I was told an average of 3-4 pounds a week in the first few months then 1-2 when I get to about half or 3/4 of my weight gone. Is this wrong???? I guess I should feel lucky...one person is doing liquids for 21 days...I at least didn't have to do that. That is true will power and I commend all of you on your journey and your help. Thanks -

I'm so damn frustrated today. I've been doing my pre-op diet since Wednesday. I have been following it to a tee. I'm only down 3 friggin pounds. (Down 5 gained 2) I'm looking at my kids food and asking myself "why am I starving myself if the outcome isn't going to be great" I know that the liquid diet is suppose to shrink the liver and aide in weight loss but I'm not seeing much of it. I'm soo upset and I've been busting my butt. This may be the wrong place to post this, if so I'm sorry.

Pre-Surgery Tests
James Marusek replied to choosehope's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The purpose of Pre-Op testing is to identify any problems or complications that can make you weight loss surgery unsuccessful. Generally you go through a first round and if that detects any anomalies, then you are directed to undergo a second round performed by specialist in those particular fields. -
Anyone from North Houston Texas here?
lyssy replied to gr8ful4life's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know. Cheryl (Dr. Balette's nurse) is handling all that. Any idea where I can find that? I do have other health issues (back, hip, knee and foot) but no HBP, diabetes, etc.The waiting (weighting - ok, that was bad) is torture. -
Told Mum And Brother Me Getting Lapband Yesterday And They Want Me To Cancel
elcee replied to Sazparella's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would not put it off. Most family members and friends do not understand and it is their automatic response to try to put you off because WLS is TOO EXTREME. That was one of the reasons why the only person I told was my husband. It is quite interesting that there is a lot of research now that says that WLS is probably the only way that most obese people will be successful in losing and keeping off their excess weight. Do what you need to do for you. If your family support you great, if they don't then they will soon get over it. Once they see you eating normal food, losing weight and being happy then they may even decide to do it themselves. -
Hair Falling Out After Lap Band Surgery
healthy and happy replied to JinTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
mzz I dont really think it is the band surgery. It is the weight loss in general. I say this because before I was banded a couple of years ago I lost weight on my own and was losing pretty rapidly and the same thing happened. -
So, I met with my surgeon for the first time today and everything went ok except that he said he would rather do the bypass surgery instead of the sleeve. He said it's ultimately my choice, that he will do either for me but that because of how much weight I need to lose he suggests the bypass. I have been doing a lot of research about the two and honestly I don't want to do the bypass. The sleeve seems like a better fit for me and I don't really care what the statistics say because I am not a statistic. I am just me. I know the sleeve isn't going to magically take away all my problems, it's a tool. A tool that is going to help lead me towards a better, healthier me. Sorry for the rant. It's just been an emotional few days. Did anyone else get prescribed anti depressants before surgery? I've never taken them before and they are not required. Not sure if I'm going to take them or not.

Hawaii here I come in a size 8!
allielee replied to allielee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you!!! I have stalls all the time lol I'll bounce around the same couple pounds for a week or two then bam I lose 4 or 5 then stall again. I started tracking my weight through my fitness pal and found a pattern.. It's how I lose which took so much pressure off. I am sure you will have a blast in February. I have been losing around 10 pounds a month. I was a low bmi when I started so it's slow going but it's going try tracking to see approximately how much you are losing per month. I figured I would be 4 pounds less than I am now when I got to Hawaii so my tracking was pretty darn close! -
Hawaii here I come in a size 8!
Inner Surfer Girl replied to allielee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
One of my goals is to get up on a surfboard (hence my forum profile name). I've been to Hawaii twice. Once after losing a significant amount of weight on Medifast years ago and once at my highest weight when I couldn't even walk on the beach. I can't wait to return for a third trip. You look like you are having a blast! -
Great loss after fill and then goes back up
DanBar posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the weight off after a fill... It seems that the weight goes down right after a fill and while on liquids for three days and then as soon as you go back on regular food... the weight starts inching back up... The first week after the fill always give me a good 5 to 8 pound drop... My last fill was my third and I had great restriction, even fluids were a little rough... It has loosened up a little but still full after about 1 cup of food... And once again, the scale is creeping up again. -
Tired of hearing about it
Roostertail2 replied to Roostertail2's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks so much guys - it helps to know I am not alone in the way I am feeling. Do you have any other advise on what to expect once I have the surgery? When did you actually start seeing the weight loss? I know it is one thing to see a number fall on a scale - but when did you actually FEEL like you had lost weight? I have been larger than I should be all of my life. The smallest I have ever been in my adult life was a 14/16. I am now in a 20/22 - though I tend to always wear shirts even larger than that so they dont cling to me - as though people cant tell I am fat! lol. Oh lets put on even bigger clothes to hide the fact!! I am afraid of the Water thing - I dont drink enough liquid now - dont know how I am going to be able to get down 64+ ounces a day! I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and then maybe a glass of tea at night - I am just not much of a drinker at all! How did you make sure you were/are getting enough water? -
Hey guys! I am new to this forum. First let me say that it is so inspiring to see how supportive y'all are with each other. I am so excited to get this surgery and feel some support from other people going through the same thing. I'm 23. I got the lap band 3 years ago. At this point the sleeve hadnt been approved yet. And before surgery I was 250. After surgery I really got on the bandwagon, but I just couldn't lose the weight. I struggled with trying to eat constantly. I threw up constantly. Even Protein that I was supposed to eat, I couldn't get down. It was depressing. It was enbarassing. I couldn't go out to eat without staying in the bathroom throwing up all my food. It was awful. I got down to 230 and that's where I stayed. After 2 years my stomach started growing over my band and I had to get all the Fluid taken outta my band and I've gained all my weight back and more. I am now today July 4th at 265 and these past few months have been the most depressing of my life. One night last month I laid awake at night and couldn't stop thinking about getting weight loss surgery again. I considered bypass but that's just too major for me and idk about having children after that. The sleeve sounds perfect! I really hate the band. I hate throwing up constantly and being on the bathroom at all social occasions cause I can't get food down. Are there any quirks I need to know about? Foods that make you sick or what happens if you eat too fast? I'm waiting to hear back on my insurance but Im pretty sure they're going to approve it. I've already called and asked. So I'm very excited!! And I can't wait! I just hope I don't have to do the 6 month criteria. I look forward to the support from y'all and I'm excited to start this journey!

Happened to me.. I was stuck on 263 for 2+ weeks and the scale will fluctuate up and back to 263 despite solely eating protein, shakes and working out. I honestly believe that the body is really smart and starts adjusting to the calorie deficiency some more than others this is why some people have to work twice as hard to lose. I finally broke my stall and I’m down to 258 my fear now is that I will again sit on that number for another week or two. I know this isn’t a marathon but I just have way too much weight to lose and I deprive myself way too much to be losing at the speed of the average joe even after a surgery. Hope you break your stall soon. Good luck!

i love reading everyone's comments to each other, because I can't believe how many emotions i can go thru in 1 day! I'm excited, nervous, anxious... and have felt the OMG moments of removing part of me. BUT... i'm down 25 lbs on pre surgery diet, and i can't wait for some help to continue this. I can't even remebr the last time i lost weight. I'm on my protein shake countdown before surgery, and I try not to think about it, but here i am. i have to be at the hospital early wednesday morn, and I'm first on the or list for the day. wish me luck....

Drastic weight fluctuation?
Bree_marie replied to Bree_marie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
50 pounds was post and pre op. I lost 20 according to the post op scale, and miraculously gained it all back in a matter of days... I’m not sure I could count 20 pounds as all water weight -
Well, I'm still gathering paperwork and I have a lot more than when I started. However, while I managed to come up with almost 7 years of records saying I was overweight. They don't go in order, I'm missing one year. Do you think this will have a big impact on my insurance's decision? I have medicare. Fae
