Someone send positive vibes my way...
ATLGirl replied to ATLGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, Thanks for the responses. My Protein has always been high. It's the staple of my diet I get like 100g a day. I up'd my cal intake because before during my dreaded 5 month stall I was around 800 calories. The more I ate the more I lost. I only weigh on Weds and Saturday mornings. I think the workouts and Water is helping but I will just have to wait until Weds to see if there is a difference. I have read the boards and know that this to will come and go eventually, Just needed a place to vent. Thanks all. -
Intermittent Fasting to Healthy Eating - FAIL
AZhiker replied to K Be Good!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IF is a very powerful tool, but please wait until at least 6 months out to start or restart. You've just got to focus on your protein and your volume is so small initially, that it would be impossible to get your nutritional requirements in. Keep it in your pocket as a tool to boost your weight loss if you start stalling or slowing down right before goal. IF helped me get the last 15 pounds off, and now is a tool I use in maintenance. I know it is so hard to go back to regular meals, but you need to do it for now. It's great that you already know what to do - just save it for the future. -
5 weeks is harder...you should check with your NUT... since I'm WAAAAY past that, I can have Snacks like almonds, etc... you are too soon...you probably don't have somewhere to keep popsicles... good luck...be interested to hear what they say...

10 days post-op and still having those weird cramping / contraction feelings.
Soapandcandlequeen replied to halfpintvsg's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I call it the wave. It happens. Your stomach is still healing. I am at 7 weeks and I still get it once in a while -
I am glad I have found a place where I can relate with everyone. It's very personal and I have chosen to only tell my husband so it is nice to know there are people out there who feel or have felt just like we do is ironically comforting, though I would never wish this condition on anyone. I'm looking forward to hearing more of your story. Good luck next week.

Cheese... glorified fat?
AliNSanDiego replied to gummykandi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I loooooove cheese & I eat it a lot for snacks and I add it to a lot of my meals. Since I use it so much, I buy low fat. I actually found a great cheese with less then 2 grams of fat per serving, low calories and almost zero carbs. It's called lifetime cheese. I love their jalapeno jack cheese. YUM! I also buy Trader Joes Light Sliced Provolone. Yum, yum! I'm losing aprox 2 pounds per week so eating cheese is not stopping my weight loss. -
Wanting to start a support group for OC area.
mamabutercup posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi everyone. I'm Tiffeny and I live in Westminster. I am trying to form a support group in my area. Although my doctor has a regular support group, they meet on Mondays, the only day of the week that is almost impossible for me to get away from the house. I would love to find others in my area that are also interested in a regular monthly support group meeting. If you are interested please email me directly @ mamabutercup@yahoo.com I would love to make this happen. -
Hardest habits to break/adopt
1-4-Many replied to Douceur72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Regarding the chewing, I was on 2 weeks of liquid pre-op and 3 weeks of liquid post op. I've never been a real fast eater but during that 5 weeks I lost any speed at all. When you are drinking things that are not all that appealing, it becomes a very slow process to get it down. And obviously, there's no chewing at all during those 5 weeks. I think that works well in teaching the person. At the point I was going through it, it was lost on me but now I see it. And regarding the making a meal last 30 minutes, we do not do that. For instance, I am able to only eat about 80% of a single egg scrambled. Scramble one and see what that quantity looks like. As long as we put 1 minute between bites, we do not have to force the meal to take 30 minutes. I bought a little egg timer and I sit with it on the table and turn it over as I take my bites. It takes me 20 to 23 minutes to eat that portion of a scrambled egg. Ask if you need to make a meal to last 30 minutes or if it's about how long you wait between bites. If you are very small portions like I am, there's no reason to drag it out any longer than you have to. And in the beginning almost everyone is very small portions. For the most part I've been very lucky. Things have fallen into place so easy for me I can't even believe it. I wish I were losing weight faster but I think a part of the reason I'm emotionally able to cope with that is because the overall process hasn't been that difficult. I miss my caffeine because I am so tired but I'll get that back soon. And way more than food, I miss being able to take Advil. But the thing I miss most, I just can't have so I have to get over it. I smoked for many years and gave it up when I bought my first home as I was very low on cash. I think about this in much the same way. There were some rough spots, but now I look back and I'm really glad I had the good sense to just do it. I can't even imagine myself as a smoker now and I smoked close to 20 years. I hope some day I can't even imagine myself as ever having been fat. (At least with my clothes on..pretty sure the skin will be a reminder otherwise.) -
So I've been sleeved since last Saturday and while I was in Mexico I moved immediately from clears to yogurt drinkables and custard cups. A lot of you indicated this might not have been the best idea (though my surgeon's paperwork could be interpreted to allow that), I decided to scale back to liquids for the second week to keep my sleeve safe. Only problem is I don't feel any restriction with liquids now (even jello). They go right through me and I still end up a little hungry afterward. Soup gives me a little satisfaction, but there's not a huge selection of soup without chunks for me to choose from. At this point, I'm longing for tuna salad or egg salad, for real foods that aren't just Desserts in some form. I'm also really desperate to get off liquids because I have very few choices that are low carb, besides my shakes, and those don't fully satisfy me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it normal to just have liquids go right through you? Granted, the hunger isn't as intense as it would have been before the surgery, so that's a plus. But one of the big issues I'm having is finding "full liquids" that are low in carbs. I really, really don't want to lean too heavily on Protein shakes as I'm really sick of drinking them. But I'm starting to get the impression I simply can't avoid them.

Chest Pain 3 Days Post Op! Any Advice?
Lola Granola replied to Mea425's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad I found this post. I have the same thing. I had surgery on May 25th, so I am just a little over a week out. I noticed the pains in my chest/diaphragm area once I stopped taking the pain medication. Now I am starting to understand why they gave so much pain medication. The incisions really didn't hurt much at all, but the chest thing is sort of uncomfortable. I notice it more in the evening and at night when I am trying to fall asleep. I thought that it was gas for while, but I noticed that I had the pain when I was certain that I had no gas at all. It is not really bad pain. I would say that it is more like a dull ache than a true "pain". Now that I have read everyones posts and have reflected back..... the pain probably had to do with swallowing a large mouthful of something or the other. I can recall doing more or less just that a few hours before noticing the pain/ache. Glad to know that should be short lived. -
Chest Pain 3 Days Post Op! Any Advice?
DaniGurl87 replied to Mea425's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had pain at the bottom of my left chest/rib cage- but i'm a week and a half out and it has finally moved on- i've read it's from everything being stitched and where it's situated and the nerves it could be hitting and the gas altogether just causes pain-- Mine was whenever I inhaled it would hurt--- I used a heating pad for a couple of days. -
Hardest habits to break/adopt
Raine replied to Douceur72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What was the hardest habit for you to break? Giving up coffee and Diet Mt. Dew. LOL loved my caffeine. Now that I am allowed a cup of coffee a day, my taste buds revolted and I no longer like the taste, go figure. What was the hardest habit for you to adopt? Chewing a million times before swallowing and making my meal last 30-45 minutes. I still am having issues with that and I am 6 weeks post op now. But try try again! -
8 days out, hungry and bored
Margaret replied to Dannymac's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try some tomato soup with melted cheese, Laughing Cow Cheese, and probably a very scrambled egg will help tremendously. I found salmon bisque from a seafood shop to be incredibly filling---rich but filling! I could eat very early on---about 5-6 days and really got sick of the Protein shakes early on! sounds as if you're doing well! I'm about 11 weeks out now and have NO problems except I do fill up quickly! -
In your 5th stage of soft/mushy ..... What cereals (non sugary) were you able to tolerate? I'm almost 4 weeks post op

Hello! I'm a revisionist too except mine is from Lap-Band. I'm sorry you have a really crazy schedule. Is there anyway your boss, or someone else in the office take your duties for the days you have scheduled? It seems that if they are going to be okay for the two weeks you are out of work that they should be able to work around your post op appointments. Also why are they scheduling your post op appointments so soon? I would have figured they would at least wait a week or two right before your surgery to schedule them since schedules can change so much in that time frame. Mine has changed 3 times for hopefully my last NUT appointment this past week alone. One more thing, can you Boss give you a half day on the appointment days? Maybe that would cut down on the snarky behavior that the staff have, personally I would be leary to work with them in the future if they are going to be nasty like that, your insurance is covering their jobs, the least they can do is be nice! It sucks when health care professionals arent being professional, being that I am one I say this with tremendious regret.

Why at Week 4 we are allowed Beans but not peas? I love red beans and white beans (unfortunately I am not able to have them over rice as most New Orleans people love. It is a tradition here on every single Monday). I love peas and espceically pea Soup but my NUT told me that I am not allowed to have that b/c of the carbs and gassiness. What is the difference. Beans are like that too???

It took 5 fills before I felt any noticeable restriction. Few people hit their sweet spot with just one fill. Wait a week and if you don't feel any restriction, go back and get another fill.

My husband walked out 3 weeks ago with no warning. Well, I guess I'd have to say I had no idea, but there might have been warning signs. He said he is no longer in love with me and wants another chance since we are both 40......I turn 40 on Monday, actually.........anyway, I am devastated. I am seeing a marriage counselor to help me through this, but can't stop crying......I am not going out because it is so hard to say to people what has happened. My husband was a popular guy that others always ask about. I can't seem to say "He's moved out" or something to that effect without starting to cry. I am in such shock. If you have been through this, how did you make it through? I guess we're lucky not to have children, but we've been together for 20 years. This is just so awful. We have a family cruise to Hawaii in a month, and he is not going. I will. But it will be difficult to be alone. When does it get easier? Thanks, Amy

You sound like you are doing exactly what you should. Main focus on staying hydrated, and yes, for the first week or so it is a full time job, or at least feels like it is. Have you tried Unjury chicken soup? Protein packed and very tasty. Warm liquids of any kind went down easier for me initially so the soup was a god send. I also heated the milk with my chocolate protein powder and drank it like hot cocoa the first week or so. The noises calmed more and more every day after my surgery, if you get more sore, try a heating pad. But you really sound as if you are doing great. Congratulations and best of luck!

Clear liquids and calories
chasingpolaris321 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I am one week post op today and am entering my second week of Clear liquids including Protein shakes made with Water. I'm finding like many I have seen on here that it can be tough to get down all of your protein and liquids when your sleeve doesn't love anything in it, but what I am struggling with is feeling like I'm just not getting enough calories in to do much activity. I've been managing around 2-3 protein supplements a day in addition to lots of sugar free liquids and broth, but that really amounts to under 300 calories a day. I felt better each day after surgery, but starting yesterday I've been feeling really weak and woozy to the point that walking downstairs exhausts me. I'm just getting worried that after two weeks of such a low calorie diet my body might not be in such great shape. Does anyone else have this concern? I don't feel hungry, but I definitely feel very sickly and like I might faint from time to time. I am following my doctors plan, but I just wanted to hear from people with other experiences to gauge if this is all part of the process. -
Post Op day 2 at home Sleeping

I should be so happy right now ?????
janinemaire posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, everyone here is so inspiring and helpful. I have been reading peoples post for weeks now while I have been going to all my doctors appointments and have been getting some great advice. I even had to get my gall blader out and I didn't care because I knew after everything I was going to have my surgery. Now I finally have a date Nov 1 and I'm having second thoughts. Even my family are saying things that aren't very helpful. I think deep down I know I really want to do this but how come I'm feeling so upset about it? I also already miss my comforting friends; pizza, vanilla cake, and wine. I'm I crazy? Please I would love some feedback, Janine -
Would you go to Mexico alone for surgery?
MuffinsMom replied to ButterflyBandita??'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went alone also, in fact I was there with BlackBerryJuice. The three of us who were having surgery on the same day, met as Ernesto picked us up at the San Diego airport, and became "littermates." As BBJ says, we took walks together, compared notes, went to the pharmacy together, and did quite a bit of socializing, along with people who had their surgery the days before and after we did. Since Aceves keeps his patients for three nights (which was one of the factors that helped me decide on Mexico), we had several people to keep us company. I had a friend who was willing to come down with me, but I read on these boards that a lot of people said their friend or family member didn't have a lot to do, and in fact a couple people mentioned that they were a little too focused on worrying about their companion. So I decided to go alone, and it was the right decision for me. The hospital staff was VERY attentive, Dr Aceves and Dr Campos came by several times a day, and I had zero complications or problems. If you're thinking of Aceves, I would recommend him without reservation.
