    Progress pictures

I like to capture myself in the ring camera. The first photo was about 2 weeks ago and the second was about in June 2021. I had surgery in August 2021. 70 pounds down. Best decision I ever made to have surgery. In the June photo, I was restricting calories, doing insane crossfit workouts every day and getting nowhere. Life is so much easier now. If you're on the fence, do it. You won't regret it. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. it's not that uncommon the first few weeks after surgery when you're healing and your stomach is pretty sensitive. You'll learn through trial & error that there are some things it won't tolerate - but in most cases, it'll eventually tolerate those things again - it's just the initial sensitivity. but beyond that, no - throwing up a lot is pretty unusual. I probably throw up maybe three or four times a year - really not that much more often than I did pre-surgery. And mine is usually due to the fact I overate. So...you learn... also, like someone else said, throwing up after surgery is different than before. First of all, your stomach is so small that there's not much in there to throw up - and also, there's not nearly as much acid in there, so you don't get that awful taste in your mouth. Let's just say it's a lot less "unpleasant" now. I don't dread it as much as I used to. btw - almost seven years out here - and after the first month or so, I rarely throw up.

    Comorbidities

I thought the same when I went for my first consult last March and fully intended to be self-pay. My BMI was also 37 and I have Anthem BCBS. But my center encouraged submitting to insurance based on my high blood pressure and blood work that came back pre-diabetes. Several weeks later, I was approved. Shocked, but very happy to have saved $15K+. It is worth submitting to insurance...you have nothing to lose as you are already prepared to be self-pay and a lot to gain. Good Luck!

    Deliver me from constipation!!

Agree with everything @lizonaplane said. I have a regimen for Miralax - every other day. If things are really regular I will extend to 1x every three days but find every other works well without getting too far the other direction! I also agree on the hot drinks. I mix it in tea and it dissolves immediately, no flavor, it's great. I would try it out and if you like it, you can get large containers of generic Miralax at Costco or any of those club-type stores.
  5. People the consipation is real. Green veggies or no green veggies, fiber or no fiber, laxative or no laxative. The struggle is soooooo very real. What can I do to get some kinda regular???? Hell I will settle for once or twice a week!!

    Secret

youre right. Only my close family members knew about my RNY, and the day of the procedure my extended cousins from the country and outside came pouring in with questions and i became famous for that week. But then you have those that are jealous and think you're cheating. My sister in law didnt have the nerve to say it to my face but to my mom she did Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

This has not been my experience. At first (say the first three months) I had to be quite careful about how much I ate. I only vomited once or twice, and it was entirely due to my eating too much, too fast. Now weighing out food and eating more slowly has become second nature, and I simply don't have that issue.
  8. I have my surgery scheduled for 3/2... The anxiousness is keeping me up at night wondering if I am making the right decision.. or am I setting myself up to get sick for the rest of my life. I have been doing my research and reading posts from many different support groups all over the internet and there are some horrific stories out there are people that can't get food down.. or they throw up every time they eat meat ETC.. for me I could deal with it coming out the other end not to be graphic but the thought of vomiting for the rest of my life has me absolutely petrified and questioning should I take the chance.. Please share your experience from having gastric bypass... I understand the first couple weeks will be rough.. And I can imagine that others have struggled because they possibly didn't follow what their doctor recommends.. But to think you do all the right things and you still get sick has me worried... Whatever insight you can share and tips you can share to possibly avoid this with a greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance God bless! Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Much appreciated! I’ll jot that down. You are looking fabulous by the way. I’ll keep you posted following surgery in a few weeks. Thanks so much!

Recovering from gallbladder surgery took me about 2 days (just had mine out on Thursday) and isn’t a great cover story. If you are getting a hernia repaired that’s a)not lying and b) much more similar in terms of recovery since it’s a rougher surgery and affects what you can eat for weeks. I didn’t tell anyone at first and then had complications post surgery that made it really obvious it was a bigger surgery than I had let on. So now my family knows. But I’m still glad it kept it to myself at first. Arguing with me pre surgery is more fun than after I’ve already done it and lost 50 lbs. 😅

    Secret

You are not alone in wanting to keep it a secret. I kept it private as well. The only person that knows is my husband. I've been kind of a hermit during Covid, so that helped because I wasn't going out much to begin with. I did tell family and friends that I had adopted a healthier eating lifestyle. That way, they won't be too surprised when they see me....well they will be because I've lost weight, but they will assume it's the new, healthier eating habits, which is not a total lie. As far as work, I simply said I was getting a procedure done, and I would be back in approximately four weeks. I work from home, so they won't see me anyway.... Good Luck to you! ♥
  12. I am 2 months post op RNY and I don’t have any appetite. I’m struggling. I had surgery then6 weeks out got Covid so I’m sure Covid had some play in it. But even now eating just makes some So uncomfortable. I am staying hydrated but I am struggling getting protein. I’m truly trying. Forcing myself to eat. Has anyone else had this happen? Any tips? Thank you!
  13. I was woozy and needed help so walk at first. I was “out” 6 hours for surgery because the hiatal hernia repair was very difficult they said. I walked every hour during the time I was awake. I drank things even when I felt nauseous. The nurses gave me meds for nausea. The pain was minimal but I’m not a sensitive person. I drove myself home the next day. The hardest part at home was getting out of low seats. It helps to sleep sitting up, or at an incline for a few days or weeks if you had GERD. Keeping up the fluids and walking often helps all the other issues. I had asthma complications with the anesthesia so bring your meds from home, and speak up about your needs while in the hospital because once you leave no one will help without a full work up in the ER. So, if you have moderate to severe asthma, ask for intravenous steroids or intravenous vitamin A to help you get over stuff dripping into your lungs while “out.” Ask for what you need for your health!

    Gastric sleeve

When I had my initial consult the PA held up a picture of a cartoon stomach being separated from a body and said something like “in this surgery we cut most of your stomach out, we remove it from your body and throw it away. It’s permanent, and there’s no going back. Do you understand that?” At the time I felt like it was kind of aggressive but after being on the forums a few years I think that surgeons should maybe spend more time in initial consults doing that sort of discussion. This is a one way trip and people should really be getting that information a long time before preop, not wondering it a few weeks after surgery. That’s a failing on the bariatric office and surgeon.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

WoooHOOOO! I just received word a few minutes ago that my insurance has approved my surgery, and that the clinic (which has been backed up for weeks due to COVID) has tentatively scheduled my RNY for March 3. That's only three weeks away! I've been working toward the surgery since January 2021, so this news is more than welcome. I'm crossing my fingers for no more delays, and an unremarkable procedure.

All week I had no appetite because my dog passed away Sent from my octopus using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. First, I don’t take birth control (i got Mr. fixed lol) so cant really comment in that aspect. BUT…I went from having no periods before surgery (i thought i was in menopause!) to having a 2 week long period soon after surgery (which was weird cuz my periods never lasted more than 3-4 days) then became clockwork regular ever since. Im 3+ years post op.

    Work Accommodations

Again, as others have said, you will feel much better in two weeks after surgery than you do now. Also, as others have said, the accommodations you may need are specific to your work tasks and how strict your environment is. I worked from home for the first month then started traveling for work again. Your main limitations will be on what you can eat and because it can be hard to drink much at once right after surgery, so if you can eat, drink, and go to the bathroom any time you want, you should be okay, unless you are really tired or foggy.

    Periods (women only please)

I would be hesitant to use the implants. They tend to be associated with weight gain, more than the pill. My surgery center didn't say I would have to use additional BC, but I don't have sex, so maybe they didn't discuss it? I know a lot of people have used Mirena (IUD) after surgery and done well with it. I also used to take BCP continuous cycling because I was sooooo miserable when I had my period. I hadn't had a period in over a decade going into surgery. They told me to stop the pill to reduce the risk of clots. I stopped 6 weeks before surgery. I am now 5 months out from surgery and I STILL haven't had a period despite being off birth control entirely. (and thank you @pintsizedmallrat. I identify as gender fluid and that is one of the reasons I worked so hard not to get periods.)

    Successful post op gastric bypass

The moment I came out of the anesthesia, I was insanely groggy and my abdomen was SORE. Best way I can describe is that it felt like I had someone trying to blow up a balloon underneath my stitches. That pain went down 50% over the next 24 hours, but it was probably about 10 days before that pain completely went away. There will be days when it is just plain sore, especially as your abs heal from the incision (the main incision on the left side, where they cut the abdominal muscle to get in, took the longest to heal and longest to no longer have pain). I tolerated liquids well from the start; I was sipping Crystal Light lemonade in the hospital and handled the jello just fine. As far as being super active...well, define "super active." This was my first surgery ever and what I didn't realize was how much surgery saps your energy. I would slowly walk around the hospital floor once or twice a day, mostly just to have a change of scenery. I walked like an old man in a nursing home, but all the nurses commented on how much more I walked than most people who have bariatric surgery. It was a week before I had something approaching a normal schedule, but it was a few weeks before I had normal energy levels. If you are in your 20s, are going to be diligent about your vitamins/nutrition/protein and have no major complicating factors (autoimmune diseases, etc.), then chronic illness is not super likely.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

So happy to hear you are rescheduled!! I just started to look at food/shake combinations that will keep me below 50 gm of carbs per day. I am allowed either shakes or lean meat and veggies for my 4 meal per day. I think I am going to do shakes for breakfast and lunch. A protein water and yogurt for a snack and then meat and veggies for dinner. Most of the days I planned out came to 750 calories, 40 g carbs, 95 g protein, and 20 g fat. My diet is to be high protein, low fat, low carb, low calorie for 2 weeks. Since I could just drink shakes 4 times per day for 2 weeks if I wanted (which I don't), I used that as a guide for my macros and calories goals (max 1000 calories, 80-120 g protein, 50 g carbs, 24 g fat). Its going to be tough and monotonous but its only for 2 weeks...right?

Over 2 mo po and stalled

Yup. I'm one of those on here who was/is in a longer stall. I weighed in at 241.2 on Oct 25th then nothing for months!!! I would hover above that lowest number for months, just like you. Somewhere between 5 and 7 lbs over. I finally contacted my nutritionist in December and provided her my food logs and she said that I was being very inconsistent with my protein and was making a few other mistakes too. So she had me stick to around 800 cals, 50 grams of carbs and keep my water intake up. So I did what she suggested (although some days I go up to around 1200 cals a day and a lil over the carbs but never over 75 grams) and the scale finally did move and I lost another 5 lbs. But I'm sorta at a stall again but I personally think the problem is due to lack of exercise now (since I'm still eating/drinking the same). I did none the entire month of January as my time was occupied fixing up my shed into a home gym. But I also think, for me, upping my protein to almost double worked too. 60-70 grams just wasn't enough and it wasn't until I upped it to double that that the scale moved again. So yeah, if you're not logging food I highly suggest you do and then contact your nutritionist and tell her what's going on. She/he will most likely be able to see where you're making mistakes and help you fix and adjust them. Best of luck!
