    My before pic

Don't you hate that though! You get all dressed for whatever occasion, look in the mirror before you leave thinking, "hey, I look pretty good today!", then someone comes along with a camera and you're like "Damn! Really!!". Well, just think down the road maybe 6 months or so after surgery and someone takes a picture and you're like "Damn! I look really good! (I'm only 7 weeks so waiting for this day myself!)

    Scars!

i think everyone is different based on their skin and how it heals. my small scars are barely noticeably at this point because they are so tiny (i'm 6 weeks out from VSG) and my larger scar was placed in my belly button so although it's much more noticeable, it was strategically placed. considering how i'm only 6 weeks out, i'm pretty happy with them thus far. good luck to you!
  4. Today is exactly one month since I had WLS. I don't normally weigh in mid week (I weigh in and do my measurements on Monday mornings) but since it has been a month since my surgery I weighed myself. I started my journey at my all time heaviest 280lbs. During the preop diet I lost 13lbs so on the morning of my surgery I was 267lbs. Today I weighed in at 240.2lbs. I am down 40lbs!!!!!! I'm finding my way through the new diet and feeling more confident by the day!

    Challenge Update.

I've gotten tired of typing all my entries in the same font and color. I decided it looks boring. Anyway, on to the challenge update. For those of you just joining my journal, I have challenged myself to get below 200 (199 to be specific) by New Year's Day. I started this when I had 36 pounds to go and 3 months to lose them. I'm doing pretty good. Even if I am a sloth who hasn't been to the gym in weeks. Somebody needs to kick my ass! Do they have an ass-kicking icon? Doesn't look like it, this icon will do though. :whip: This is what I need, someone standing behind me with a whip to make me go to the gym. At least until I get back in the routine. Any volunteers? So here's my challenge ticker:
  6. I'm just venting here. I had VSG on 11/12/12. Did really well the first 6 weeks. Once I went back to work in January, it's like the genie said "Poof! No more weight loss for you!" I have struggled and struggled. I am at my breaking point now. I have even avoided the message boards here for weeks because I get even more depressed reading about everyone's success. Nothing I try seems to work for me anymore. I am exercising like I should. I am eating what I should, and avoiding what I shouldn't be eating. No matter what I do, I can't seem to get beyond that one hash mark on the scale. I have an appointment with the surgeon next week and I really don't want to go to it. I feel like a complete failure when it comes to this surgery. I have lost 42 lbs. so far, but that was all before January. Since then - nothing! Granted, I haven't gained any either, but I still feel like a complete failure. I was religiously logging my food on MFP, but found that if I did that, all I did was make myself feel hungry and deprived so I had to let up on being so obsessive about that. Now, I just don't know what to do. I am about ready to resign myself to the fact that I am just going to be this way the rest of my life.
  7. I'm moving from stage 4 soft foods to the final stage 5 of regular food in a week or so.....can't see myself eating much more than I am now, but on stage 5 it's supposed to be 3 high protien meals a day and a couple protien Snacks....worried I won't be able to get in my protien....what did you do? How was your transition from soft to regular food? Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App

    It Works products?

I signed up as a loyal customer for three months and I would not recommend their products. I was skeptical and I should have trusted my instinct. The results from the wraps are temporary and you must drink a LOT of water while wearing them. You can flush excess cellulite by drinking water without the wraps. The hair, skin, nails made my face break out. The greens taste horrible. You would come out better buying Green Superfood or juicing. I didn't try the protein because by looking at the nutritional facts, it's not worth the time. Save your money.
  9. Congrats! BTW, I wanted to chime in that my impression is that he does 0-3 surgeries a day &/ or 4-8 per week most weeks.
  10. I've seen a lot of threads about different types of Protein powders, shakes, etc, but haven't come across one yet for ways to pack in the protein in other forms, so I figured I'd start one. I'm only a few weeks out so my diet is still limited, but so far the things I've found are: Oikos greek yogurt 110 cal, 0 fat, 15g protein! It's kinda sour, so I usually add some Bear Naked Protein granola. Bear Naked Protein Granola: 140 cal, 7g fat, 5g protein Kashi Go Lean High Protein & High Fiber cereal: 140 cal, 1g fat, 13g protein Special K Protein Plus: 100 cal, 3g fat, 10g protein Carbmaster yogurt: 80 cal, 4g carbs, 12 g protein (i can only find this at Smith's, so i'm not sure if that's true of everywhere, or just here) Frigo Light String Cheese: 60 cal, 8g protein 1g carbs I'd love to hear what other products people have found. I'm not a huge fan of the shakes, so as my diet progresses, I'd like to add a wider variety of protein options instead of going back to shakes. Right now, my favorites are yogurt and granola or Cereal with milk. Since skim milk has 8-9g protein (depending on the brand) I can easily get at least 18g in one quick meal.
  11. I had my gall bladder taken out just weeks before my sleeve surgery. Yes, it was very similar.

    Relief for knee pain

Hi I’m 4 1/2 months post op and down 45 pounds. I too have osteoarthritis in both knees but right knee is worse. Right after surgery pain went away which I thought was wonderful but it came back with a vengeance at about 6 weeks out. Before surgery I was on Mobic daily for the pain but had to give it up due to the surgery. I think the 6 week mark was my body completely free of anti-inflammatory- ouch. I did see my ortho when I was down 30 pounds because of the pain in the knee - I was limping. He told me 50 pounds was the magic number that seemed to make a difference. I got a cortisone shot that day, hadn’t tried that in about 8 years. It did seem to help and now I’m 5 pounds from that magic 50 number. We’ll see. He wants to do a knee replacement as well, I’m just not ready for that. I also tried the Orthovisc injections prior to surgery but it didn’t work for me. I am happy I don’t need to take anti-inflammatories anymore, at least.
  13. Hi All So I am getting ready for my work day and I had to run back to my bathroom to get something I forgot. I got a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I did a double take. So I snapped a picture. I was at my moms and she gave me the picture on the left. My jaw dropped. I was 317 or more in that picture. I can't even believe I let someone take that picture of me. I was definitely anti-pictures. I realized that before I had lapband surgery in Dec of 2012 that I had actually lost 40 lbs on my own. Needless to say I am very very pleased that I had this surgery performed. I have been keeping my calories under 1200 a day and been working out 4 plus times a week. 58 more pounds to go to my ultimate goal. I would like to lose 6-8 pounds a month to reach my goal. The more weight I lose and the better I feel in my clothes the more motivated I get to eat cleaner and cleaner. Not just stay under my calories but make every calorie count! Hope everyone is doing well today. I had a couple of NSV's this weekend and am proud of myself and I wanted to share Take care, Reen

Well, finally had to have it removed

I just had to have my band out due to the same thing you did... stomach herniating up and out of band. I am only 2 weeks out.
  15. MRSJLH

    Removal options ASAP? Miserable!

Ten thousand dollars looks pretty cheap to me right now compared to what I am going to pay even after insurance pays their part. I spent seven weeks in the hospital, had major surgery to remove the band and repair the damage it had done. Also not fun laying in a hospital bed wondering if I was going to die. Hope you have some relief soon. God Bless!
  16. Well after being sleeved in November I had managed to keep things trucking a long really well. No typical 3 week stall, good strong weight loss, etc. Well it's now been 2 weeks since the scale moved. I really can't complain as I am down a lot (over 100lbs) which isn't bad for 4 months out. But I've still got 24lbs to goal and I wanted to get there by my birthday in late May. I know it's still achievable but I really had hoped not to deal with the stalls. Strangely even though I'm 4 months out my sleeve is still pretty tight, I don't think I'm clearing 4 oz per meal, well I know I'm not. Diet is about the same it was 6 or 8 weeks ago when I was still losing pretty rapidly. Honestly I went into this figuring if I even lost 60lbs I would be happy, and I'm well past that. I feel good and look pretty good where I am now, but after cruising along thinking I'm almost to goal it's mildly frustrating.
  17. I manage an office of 40 employees and I'm responsible for payroll & day to day operations. Not a lot of activity, just office work. I've heard different stories about returning to work, some as early as 5 days post surgery. I'm getting closer & I'm planning my time off for the surgery (not yet scheduled), I've allowed for 2 full weeks, but what are the chances I'll be able to return sooner?

Anyone have WLS with their spouse?

There are pluses and minuses to both options. My husband (fiddleman) had the sleeve done last July and I was going to do it six months after him but it will end up being about a year apart- I'm shooting for June sometime. The case I would make for doing it separately would be recovery time, especially if you have children or household duties to take of. Yes, you won't be flat on your back for weeks, but your energy level will be a lot lower than normal and a lot of your time will be taken up with just sipping protein shake or water to stay fed and hydrated, timing medication and vitamins etc. I'm glad I didn't do it together because our house and garden would have ended up being a total wreck! If you can have someone stay with both of you for the first week or so to help out with things, then I would say try doing it together. It's so nice to be at exactly the same stage, going to the same appointments together and can encourage one another. I've dealt with fleeting feelings of jealously and worry- now that hubby is thinner, getting all the compliments and shrinking before my eyes and I'm not, will he still be interested in me, what if things change in our relationship, etc. Thank God for a rock solid loving husband! What you choose really depends on your preference and situation but just some things to think about. I'd like to hear experiences from other couples too!

  21. @ And you know after seeing post after post about stalls 3 or 4 weeks out I always wonder....why don't surgeons tell people to expect them and that they are completely normal??

    The Gauntlet

just so you know - it's not usually the surgeons who make you go through the pre-op diets (other than maybe for the week or two prior to surgery to shrink your liver) - it's the insurance companies. Mine required a six-month supervised diet sometime within the last two years (that is, the last two years before surgery). Some require a shorter period of time, some don't require a diet at all. Some will accept attempts through places like Weight Watchers as long as it's documented - some insist on having it done with a physician or a registered dietitian. Ask your insurance company as they're all different.
  23. My husband told me a couple of weeks ago that he saw one of my former coworkers and told her I was having the RNY. I asked him not to tell people because it isn't their business. The town we live in is full of judgmental assholes and the last thing I need is for them looking down at me because of that. Well I thought he understood. He just told me that 3 other people will be thinking of me tomorrow. I asked him what he told them and he said that I was having the surgery. I asked him if he told them the kind of surgery and he said yes because they'll figure it out sooner or later. This caused an instant reaction from me and we got into it. I dont care for people knowing I'm having surgery but it's none of their business what type of surgery unless ME MYSELF or I tells them!!! Am I wrong to be embarrassed that people know?? That's one of my mental issues I have to get passed too, I always worry what everyone else thinks about me. Any advice!?

    A Bad (Unhelpful) Weekend

So my Progresso soup victory (see previous post) was very short lived. My stress overwhelmed me the past few days and well...lets just say I resorted right back to unhealthful eating habits. I'm not even going to try to put a positive spin on it. After 2 weeks clean eating...no flour products...bread, pasta...I have binged to the point of feeling woozy on carbs. Bread in particular...lots of bread. I work in the education field...I've taught high school math and science and now work for the Army where I am in charge of about 55 people doing everything from teaching Soldiers how to teach, to designing curriculum, to building educational technology. Once every three years we get accredited which means a bunch of people descend on our organization and tell us whether we are doing a good job. This is the first year I am responsible for so much (last time I just had the teaching Soldiers how to teach part). I mention this because as I've prepared for this visit, I've been looking at what the Army believes about training and education and one of the key beliefs is that Soldiers should be "self-directed learners". That is an awesome phrase and I understand what it means...the problem is, we don't do a good job teaching the young Soldiers how to be that....its as if we expect them to be born with the ability. That's how I feel about stress management. I logically understand that my stress reactions are not helpful, that I should "shake it off" and "not let it derail me". The problem is I don't have a clue how to do that! I know how to eat. I've found myself thinking this afternoon that I just need to survive the week and then I can get back after it...after all I will still have 2 full weeks before I have to go weigh in again...sigh...I'm tired of just surviving. So here's what I'm going to try...no I'm going to channel YODA and say here is what I'm going to do. Before I eat a meal, I'm going to walk for 5 minutes. I can do that, I can do it at work by walking through the halls to the other end of the building and back, I can do it at home rain (on the treadmill) or shine (outside). It might not solve all my unhealthful eating reactions to stress....but it IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT! I'll let you know how the experiment goes. Beth

    Eating pains!

That sounds similar to what I was experiencing...I went to the surgeon and asked about this, and he said it's probably gas, so try to have 1 to 2 Gas-X pills before meals. Also, it's probably because you could be eating you meals too fast. I'm currently almost 6 weeks out, and I'm still trying to get used to eating more slowly. I followed this advice, and it seems to help me a lot. Please let me know how you make out!
