Counting Sugar grams instead of Carbs?

Oh goodness yes... I DID count Sugars (not sugar alcohols mind you) definitely. I liked to keep my total sugars to less than 10g per day. That's not easy to do, but I was able to do it - and it sure worked. Good luck!
  2. I first think about my calorie intake for the day, shooting for 800-1200 calorie window, with 60 to 80 G. of Protein So then I figure out my meals. I drink with every meal that I have. It's to painful to try to eat by itself. So I eat some, and drink some, so I don't get stuck. I checked this with my Surgeon, and like he said I am to sensitive ! So if this works, then do it... I eat 3 meals a day, that way.. and a snack ? Well if its wet like light yogurt, I can do it without Water. Even mushies would get stuck for me, and you bet I chew it up well ! So I drink some water. As long as I stay within that window for my calorie intake,,, I'm fine.. Pop is not a good thing because it's carbonated. I drank a glass of ROOT BEER one summer, and I thought it was going to kill me... Could be me though ! But I know he said no pop, alcohol, or chewing gum (could slip down, and get stuck.) So I am a Cheap Date... LOL.. Hope that answers some stuff, that's how the band works for me, and I am very comfterable with it. Shirley.
  3. Went to a party this weekend and didn't even crave alcohol! They had alotta good food, but i had me some fruit instead!

    drinking after

Unfortunately she has placed the addiction of food with alcohol, dealing with the emotional issues of addiction will surely help your whole family. You should try to get into some counseling together. Have an honest conversation with your kids, all sit down and discuss the feelings that drinking has on each of you.

    Alcohol

Considering I hate the taste of alcohol, I'm 8 months out and haven't had a drink. But I guess that doesn't help you much...lol

    Alcohol

My surgeon requires a waiting period of 6 months before drinking alcohol. I will probably follow his direction. It's not something that I will really miss.

    Alcohol

I had a glass of wine 3 weeks after surgery but didn't try anything harder until I was almost 2 months out. Thing to remember alcohol can pack a lot of calories on. If it is is moderation it's ok to occasionally treat yourself but try not to go overboard. Start slowly and see where your tolerances are limited as well. Alcohol will affect you differently once you are banded although not as much as if you had the bypass or sleeve.

    Tell Us Where You're From!

hi my names is laury n im getting the gastric sleeve done on Tuesday the 30 of aug if hurricane irene lets me lol... i have a few questions about recovery such as how long till u can actually start eating ur normal foods n drinking alcohol.
  9. How long did everyone wait post banding to have there sip of alcohol?
  10. I think it's great that you recognize that you binge eat, and that you may need to seek counseling post-op. I've struggled with binge eating myself, and I'm continuing to see a therapist and to work on emotional eating issues. The surgery will completely change your focus, and you simply won't be able to eat huge quantities without hurting yourself. The high Protein focus also helps with sugar cravings and appetite supression. But you've become accustoming to stuffing down your feelings and comforting yourself with food. What will happen when you can't do that? It can be an uncomfortable process, and if you can get support going through it, you'll be much better off. Some people unfortunately transfer to a new addiction - alcohol, gambling, shopping... other ways of distracting themselves from their feelings. I don't think you'll be a wreck, but it's something you'll still have to work on - just one more thing your new tool will help you with! Good luck - you'll do great!

    Sex? Wine?

Sex - when you feel up to it. Alcohol - on your dr's advice.

    Sex? Wine?

I was told to wait at least six months before i consume any alcohol. And from what I understand you have to wait possibly at least two weeks after surgery before sex. I am exactly one week post op and my f/u appt is not until 8/31/2011 to ask my doctor about the sex thing. I plan to ask my doctor at my appt. Hang in there
  13. When can we incorporate these two things back into our lives? Just curious. I know alcohol is in moderation, but when can I enjoy a glass of wine at night again?
  14. If there was a surgery that cured alcoholism or other addictions you better believe it would be performed frequently! I'm so thankful that this surgery helped me cheat (translaticfon, it worked) and experience this level of health and happiness. Wow I never thought before surgery I'd have such exuberant posts but wow!

    14 months out -

NTVTXN - You are absolutely fine. Please don't worry. Just keep eating the right things (90% of the time) and you will be able to maintain. Where I can falter is popcorn, chips, and alcohol. They go down so easily - especially when combined. If you kept eating the little amount you did a few months ago, you would continue to lose. From what you've said before, you are really happy with your body now. Your sleeve has matured, but it's still your tool. You can do this! PM me if you need any encouragement at any time.
  16. I've been told to be extremely carful with them. Check the sugars especially the coated ones. I've eaten about a handful of pistachios at a time and as long as I chew well, I'm ok. But at first I threw up ALLOT!!!!! It was from gall stones and after it was taken out, I haven't thrown up hardly at all. Gallbladder issues are usually common after gastric sugery because te bile that it creates is not needed to digest as much and it just sits there and inflames the organ. Not every sugary is going to advance in the same way, of coarse. But if you attempt any new food, try it with caution and, just like a baby trying new foods, take it slow. It's DEFINITELY a relearning experience about how to eat. 90 pounds down for me. And if you hate to take Vitamins, as I do, I FORCE myself to take the b12. B12 is imperative to protect our brain function and to help avoid brain shrinkage. It also increases the metabolism and is responsible, by the most part, for reproduction of red blood cells. If our red blood cells are not replenished, we can develop anemia. Tilapia is ALWAYS a good choice as long as it's not fried. Greasy fried foods may not sit well. But everyone is different. Personally, in my opinion, it was the fatty, fried, foods or sweets, along with my addiction to food that drove me to needing an "intervention". my crutch was not alcohol, drugs, smoking, or anything else that you can go cold turkey. How can you go cold turkey with food? It's impossible if you are to sustain life.

    TINY little cheat

I totally agree with all of the above....don't sweat it. I cheated a little to (in fact I drank alcohol both Saturdays before the surgery and was told none was allowed) we're not expected to be 100% perfect. You're doing great!!

    Low carb versus low calorie

You count carbs that affect blood sugar and dietary fiber and sugar alcohols do not affect blood sugar. I subtract them.
  19. The oddest reaction I've gotten is when I told someone who weighs about 80 - 100 pounds more than I do; she just stared at me and didn't say a thing. A dear friend of 28 years says she'll still be my friend, but won't do a thing to support the decision like take me to the surgeon...This friend and I have been to WW together, talked about food/weight since we met, and I have listened to her struggles with alcoholism. My husband had an absolute hissy-fit, but now says he was being selfish and apologized - he will be supportive now of whatever decision I make. My 6' tall beautiful daughter who wears a size 6-8, naturally, said that she is totally supportive and has worried about me for the past 2 years. She said, "Mom why bother with trying to lose weight the way you have for years. Why not take the help?! It's not like you have to suffer in order to deserve being good to yourself." ALL of these reactions AND I haven't even seen a doctor yet! I'm at the first step of calling to find out about it after doing a lot of online research. The person I expected would not understand is my very thin daughter. She, however, could not be more understanding and helpful. I guess we just never know! "I had WLS, I don't eat very much and my stomach is smaller, it's none of your business, or ..." is our choice just like the choice to get the sleeve. Geeze, I talk like I've already had the procedure done!
  20. i dont tell anyone about the surgery. so far all the weight i have lost except for ten pounds has been before my surgery. however when they do ask im gonna tell my truth, i worked hard, exercized and i ate right. all of which are true. about the surgery and being 'honest' about it. there is a reason there are so many hippa laws out there now. because it aint nobodys busness but your own. as for food being an addiction-that is sooooo true. i believe it is the hardest addiction to beat. the reason being is that we are all hard wired to eat as much as possible to stay alive. it is in our dna. the problem with that is now food is so available to us that we eat ourselves fat. the reason i think that it is the hardest addiction to beat is because when a drug addict or an alcoholic, or smoker, or any other addict is quiting they are supposed to totally avoid anything to do with the drug that they are addicted to. with a food addict they cant do that. you have to eat to survive. period. so how is one supposed to kick a habit that they have to go back to every day other wise they die. this surgery is not a 'cheat' it is like our rehab. it is proven that all diets dont work, eventually the person who succeeded in their diet will gain all of the weight back and then some, the reason...because they cant kick the habbit. i really feel sorry for anyone that thinks this is the easy way out, because they are only fooling themselves. people that dont have a weight problem are the lucky ones, they have good genes, or they struggle everyday to not over eat, or they exersize so much that they can eat what ever they want. however for the ones that are fat and simply believe that they can do it on their own will eventually change their mind and have some kind of surgery, or they wont and they will struggle with their weight until the day they die, which will be sooner then it should, because they could have been like us cheaters and kicked the habbit.... i hope i didnt offend anyone, this is my opinion, which everyone is intitled to, and also as well, anyone is intitled to disagree with me if they wish
  21. Yup, what everyone else said. People who don't have food issues can't comprehend that food addiction is as "real" and consuming as alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling issues, etc. My BFFs at work are all skinny-minnies (with the exception of 1) and they were all completely worked up about me having this surgery. They didn't understand that the risks I was taking with my obese body were likely higher than the risks involved with the surgery itself. Keep it up with the training! I've got a stretch goal to train for our local mini-marathon too . . . I don't think I'll be ready by next May but for sure the May after that!
  22. I haven't had my surgery as of yet (shooting for late Sept). I actually thought that of myself, I'm cheating by having this surgery done. However I have changed my mind on this, thanks to my husband (thin and can eat anything). He said, if an alcoholic or a drug addict goes to rehab, away from their addictions no one would dare say they were cheating. That "intervention" saved their life. How is WLS any different? Some of us have real addictions to food that are slowly killing us. We all are doing what is right for US not them. This isn't a walk in the park, this is still very difficult process to go through. You did all the hard work yourself, i.e. eating healthier and exercising. People will find something wrong with our choices no matter what. Give yourself the credit that you deserve and NEVER let anyone down play your success!
  23. My pre-op diet was 2 weeks of no carbs, sugar, alcohol, fruit, cheese, nuts...basically protein and veggies. Based on the Dr.'s office I lost 5lbs, but I know I gained a couple pounds from consult day to start of the pre-op diet which was 5 weeks. From my results I lost 9 pounds: weight in the morning first day of pre-op diet and weight in the morning day of surgery. I also didn't follow the diet to the 'T'. But I was proud with my results and know that I was making a really big change from the way I used to eat.
  24. When you are at the right level (fills) of your band where you don't feel hungry and get that satisfied feeling after eating, the obsessing will decrease. I can't say that it will totally go away because food addiction is like drug or alcohol (I'm a recovering alcoholic) addiction that really never goes away. But, the band will help you stop overeating when you eat the right food. Of course, it can't stop you from eating bad food like chips, ice cream, or Cookies because those just slide on through. I found that when I've eaten until I'm satisfied and don't get hungry for a couple, three, sometimes four hours, I don't think about food. I'll look at the clock and tell myself, 'hey, it's getting close to lunchtime, see what the cafeteria is having or decide what salad you want'. Not the old discussion I used to have in my head 'Ok, I just finished Breakfast, what do I eat next; no I can't eat that quickly after breakfast I have to wait a until lunch; that's too long to wait, blah, blah, blah'. You get the meaning. Getting head banded is just as important as getting lapbanded in that you are going to learn how to eat to live and not live to eat. It's going to be a long process, but well worth the effort. J.

    My Real Life

Your story is so inspiring. I started finding comfort in food at a very young age. I am an adult child of an alcoholic and have had many difficult days learning that eating for comfort has taken a such a toll on my quality of life. The band is the best thing I have ever did for myself. Thanks for posting!!
