    Heartburn/ Acid Reflux

I suffer from heartburn now, as well. I don't like takeing pills, even asprin, so I sought holistic remedies such as drinking a glass of milk, or eating greek yogurt right when the heartburn symptoms came. (This only gave momentary help.) However, after about 2 months of this Ifinally went to see my doctor (also banded) and he recommending OTC Prolisec 14 day treatment. I tried it and on the first day, the heartburn went away. Sometimes it pops up again if I eat late at night or if I eat foods that are harder to digest or spicy. For this, I take Tums and eat yogurt and drink cold water to relieve it.

    The pain

I'm glad I'm not alone. I feel the walking is no use, my stomach tightens up when I walk. So far I am trying various liquids and have tried yogurt n cottage cheese and all was well. For the first two days both #1 and #2 was happening but now #2 hasn't happened for a few days. Trying to get any gas out is a pain as well. I also found that warm drinks help loosen things up. Buy definitely doesn't help with the dry mouth!

Am I too tight? Or give it time?

Yes, it sounds like you're too tight. Yogurt should go down without feeling "stuck." You might not be able to eat much at a time, but it shouldn't get stuck.
  6. Well, I can tell you what I'm allowed to do on my 14 day pre op diet. shake for Breakfast and lunch. A small piece of fruit with lunch. (smaller than a baseball, slightly larger than a golf ball) A midafternoon snack of 1 ounce of low or no fat cheese (one string cheese is acceptable), or a 90 calorie yogurt or 1.2 c. no fat cottage cheese. dinner is 4 ounces of lean Protein, chicken, turkey, lean beef; 1 c. vegetables by volume; 2 slices of whole grain bread. I often use fat free mayo and make a sandwich. My other mainstain is using the skinless chicken tenders you buy in the fresh meat dept. of your grocery. That makes it quick and easy to cook and weigh. I switch up the seasonings I sprinkle on: Greek, Italian, Mrs. Dash.... Then you are allowed 10 baby carrots for an evening snack. My instructions said that I could rearrange this as needed or desired but could not eat anything that was not on the list. A lot of days I get too busy and don't bother with the Snacks, other days I eat it all. Hope that helps!

    Not eating much..

Early out I used two Protein drinks per day to get enough protein in. One for Breakfast, then a couple ounces of protein at lunch and dinner, and one before bed. Greek yogurt is a great protein source too. Lynda

    Non Dairy Protein

I am a vegetarian. I had my surgery on 12/30, so the jury is still out on whether or not I’’m lactose intolerant now... but regardless, if I stumble upon some dairy free protein sources that are awesome I’ll let you know. I already had issues drinking straight milk before my surgery. I could eat cheese, yogurt, and ice cream (on occasion) with little difficulty though. I think their processing makes it easier on my stomach. Anyway, like I said I’ll keep you posted if I find something awesome!

    Day Before Surgery...

The only thing I had the day before was a Greek Yogurt.

Everyone loves this holiday because it kicks of the summer vacation season. As a weight loss surgery patient, you can use this holiday to kick off a new phase of weight loss and health, whether you’re getting ready for surgery or you’re working on losing weight or keeping it off. Here’s what we have for you in this newsletter. Use Memorial Day to Inspire Your Next WLS Victory Red, White, and Blue: Your Memorial Day WLS Treats! Healthy Barbecue for Memorial Day and Summer Enjoy the newsletter, then use your day off to spend time with your family and friends. Don’t forget to burn a few extra calories and put together some healthy meals for the rest of the week! Sincerely, Alex Brecher Founder BariatricPal.com Use Memorial Day to Inspire Your Next WLS Victory Memorial Day is the national holiday that honors the men and women who have died while serving in the United States’ armed forces. This could include members if your immediate family or your former friends, or maybe your family tells stories of ancestors who went off to fight in long-ago wars such as World War I. Most of us know one or more family members or friends who currently serve in the armed forces, and this holiday offers the perfect chance to thank them for their service. Memorial Day can also offer the opportunity to become inspired again in your WLS journey. Maybe you can dedicate the next phase in your journey to a vet, an active duty solider, or a current member of the reserves. Knowing how proud you can make this person can give you the energy to put in an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill when you feel like quitting, or the strength of mind to say no to dessert. Hit your goals as your inspiration is fighting for the country, and the two of you can make each other proud. Red, White, and Blue: Your Memorial Day WLS Treats! If you’re going to a Memorial Day party or just trying to enjoy the time for your family, there’s nothing more appropriate than bringing or making something red, white, and blue to serve. Decorated cupcakes and berry pie with ice cream are tempting and simple options, but you can do better. Here are some fun and healthier ideas. A veggie tray with purple and white cauliflower, red grape tomatoes and bell pepper strips, and white yogurt-based dip. Sugar-free strawberry jell-o topping with sugar-free whipped topping and blueberries. Sliced blackberries and strawberries in cottage or ricotta cheese optionally sweetened with low-calorie sweetener. Sliced figs and red pears served with white low-fat feta or goat cheese. With a little creativity, you can make an attractive and healthy treat to share. Healthy Barbecue for Memorial Day and Summer Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. That means it’s grilling season! Whether it’s a party at the park or a backyard barbecue, you’re the one who gets to decide how well you’re going to stick to your WLS diet. Remember your pre-WLS days? A meal at a barbecue might have looked something like this. Chili dog and bun or barbecue ribs (500 calories) Cole slaw or pasta salad (300 calories) Baked beans (200 calories) Iced brownie (200 calories) Can of soda (150 calories) 1 beer (150 calories) That’s 1,500 calories, in case you lost count. Healthy Grilling Hot dogs, cheeseburgers, ribs…who needs ‘em? You sure don’t! With all the healthy possibilities out there, you have no reason to worry about a barbecue! For a healthy, tasty burger, grill a mixture of lean ground turkey, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasonings, and crumbled fat-free feta or grated parmesan cheese. Or, if you’re not in the mood for much food prep, just throw some lean ground turkey, veggie burgers, chicken breasts, or shrimp on the grill. They’re all high-protein, low-calorie choices. Instead of serving your protein on buns or rolls, serve them with lettuce leaves. You may be able to get your family to try these healthy swaps. You could even challenge them to see who can come up with the best healthy burger or other recipe for the grill. If not, you know the drill. Throw their hot dogs and beef burgers on the grill, and let them have their treats as you enjoy your lighter, high-protein, low-carb food. Guess who’ll feel better after the meal! Smart Summer Sides after WLS If you’re still hungry and don’t feel like more protein, try grilling up a portabella mushroom or some sliced eggplants for something to chew on. For a side, almost any vegetable is a great grill choice: zucchini, asparagus, artichokes, onions, and even cabbage. Just brush them with a little olive oil, not butter, and flavor them with herbs, bouillon, or teriyaki sauce. The cold sides can be killers at a barbecue, so plan ahead for healthier options. Skip the baked beans and biscuits, and don’t even think about mayo-laden pasta or potato salad. If your grilled protein wasn’t enough to fill you up, think about the following. Use Greek yogurt instead of mayo when making prepared salads. Make prepared salads based on veggies or proteins, not carbs. So, make slaw with shredded cabbage or broccoli, or make tuna salad or egg white salad with ham. Always have a big green salad available. It’s something to fill up your plate and keep you busy when you’re not truly hungry but still feel like eating while everyone else is. Sweet Endings…No Regrets Red, white, and blue cupcakes...American chocolate chip cookies…a flag-decorated sheet-cake…you don’t have to blow your diet to show your patriotism! Fresh red strawberries, white peaches, and blue blueberries or purple grapes are just as patriotic, just as popular, and way healthier. Sugar-free ice pops work, too! Your Memorial Day celebration and every other barbecue this summer can be even more fun because you know you’re doing the right thing for your weight loss. You can make your meal high-protein and low-calorie while keeping it delicious and simple. Have a great Memorial Day! Remember to keep it healthy, active, and fun! After all, that’s what life and your WLS journey are for, right?

My first soft food was a vanilla Oikos Zero Greek Yogurt. It was like heaven. That yogurt was so good it taste like cheesecake to me. ☺️

    Four-1/2 months post surgery

Congratulations! That's a huge drop in four n 1/2 months! I was just sleeved on Tuesday. I enjoy reading about other sleeved patients and their recovery. Sorry I'm still at the stage two (yogurts, applesauce, Soups - only broth & creamy). I would LOVE some steamed veggies, I can't wait until I'm at that stage. How long after you were sleeved did you go back to work? And good luck with your new dating life! How exciting is that!!!!!

    Need filling food ideas

Eat more often. And the thing I still struggle most with with the band is that what feels like pigging out is often still a small enough amount of food to have the weight coming off. I've lost a lot of restriction lately and really need another fill. I've avoided the scales for two weeks becuase I've been sure I'd see a gain of 2kg or more. I hopped on this morning, I've LOST another.5kg. I feel as if I'm eating to maximum capacity - ie. overeating but obviously not. I guess if I think about it it would have required more food to reach this capacity previously. Same with mushies. If you add another meal in there somewhere it will help and wont stop you losing. Long term, I find I do better with the band to eat the foods that are difficult - like bread (as well as including Protein for long term satiety). They stick with me much longer and help me eat far less overall, they take longer to eat and are more satisfying to eat. Soup may be lower calorie or yogurt may be higher protein or whatever, but carbs still perform the function of filling me up and keeping the food sitting there in the pouch, fruit, veges etc on their own I find dont fill me up, dont stop me eating too much at one meal etc.
  15. It is amazing how this surgery can really mess with your mind! One minute, I worry I am not losing fast enough. The next - I worry I am losing too fast! One week I can eat 4-6 oz at a meal no problem, then the next, 4 bites and I am full. I am rarely hungry, and still enjoy eating when I am. I have no pain - just very full feeling..... Can your tummy shrink even after surgery? What I am eating: Breakfast - a Fage yogurt or an egg and peice of bacon or a muscle milk lunch - a deerburger patty with cheese (4oz) or a tuna kit or piece of fish with a little broccoli dinner - just the Protein part and maybe a bite of veggies for whatever we are having for dinner. On the days I am hungry - I will eat baby bel cheese or string cheese in betwen my meals. I feel like I am doing well - except for liquids. I am way under what I should be drinking....happy if I get 40oz a day. I keep trying to work on it! No real exercise yet....knee still acting up. Lots of walking. San Antonio Zoo - 2 miles on our nature trail here in town, that kind of stuff. Losing some hair - I am lucky - have LOTS of it. Went and had some long layers put in. My hairdresser said anytime you are eating under 1200 calories, you will lose hair. Anyway - just a quick check in. This site has been a lifesaver for me, I hope it is helping others.... Oh - and went from a 3x and size 24 pants to an XL top and 16/18 bottoms in less than 3 months. Yay me....now why am I so scared???

    Greek Yogurt

What makes the Chobani different from other greek yogurts? Every single time I have tried greek yogurt, it turned my mouth inside out and I hated it.
  17. Blue_Eyes

    Greek Yogurt

Chobani is very rich and creamy and I find it holds me over the best, don't know if it's different from other brands you tried. I tried the Athenos (sp) and the Dannon one and both were not as creamy to me. When you have tried greek yogurt in the past did you add some kind of sweetner to it? It definately has a bite if you don't add stevia or something to it.

    Breakfast Problems

I TOTALLY know what you mean! First thing in the morning I can barely eat anything....I kinda have gotten myself addicted to smoothies as I can get one on the way to work and sip on it....gives me yogurt and protein anyway! And I have noticed that when the humidity is really high here and it is so stinking hot that I seem tons tighter then, too. Crazy!

    Greek Yogurt

I guess I'm one of the odd balls - I don't really like regular yogurt, but love the greek yogurts!
  20. I was given the opportunity to escort a group of fifth graders to Washington, DC this past week. I almost turned it down because I was only 2 weeks postop and I wasn't sure how I could mange the eating on the trip. My husband convinced me to go (it is not everyday I get an opportunity like that...I was replacing a sick teacher who couldn't make it.). My diet at this point is only clear liquids and protein. Dr. Kelly recommends not adding mushies until day 20. Lots of other people report eating food earlier so I wasn't hyper stressed. I was trying to keeping the operation quiet so I was trying to not draw too much attention to myself! I brought protein powder to add to OJ every morning and that is what I had for breakfast each morning. Lunch and dinner was a little tricky. Lunch the first day was provided by the bus company and I just took the turkey off the sandwich and chewed that up into mush and ate it. That went down fine but the cheese stick did not (harder to chew into mush). Our first dinner stop was a buffet. . I ate barely anything (enough to make it look like I was eating). My stomach did not do well with that. It just felt uncomfortably tight. Luckily we did a lot of walking that night through some monuments and it loosed up. The second lunch was really late (2 p.m.) and I ordered hummus at a greek place. It came with warm flat bread (red light food!). The hummus went down fine the bread not so much so. Dinner was at Medieval Times. I did the soup (and attempted a couple bites of the bread) and ate maybe a tablespoon of chicken (did pretty good with that). The next day we did lunch at the Smithsonian and I was really disappointed at my options. In hindsight I probably should have eaten a McD's smoothy. I ordered chicken nugget happy meal. When I say "ate it" I had four french fries and peeled the breading off the chicken nuggets (4 of them) and attempted to eat it. Those did not sit well in my tummy. Turns out that upstairs in the dining area I could have had a yogurt parfait (not advertised downstairs). Dinner that night was a the Pentagon Mall. I had wild mushroom soup (outstanding) and a bit of frozen yogert. Lunch on our last day was at the Golden Corral. Barely ate anything and stopped before feeling uncomfortable. I'd give myself a grade of "C" on my eating on the trip. I don't think anyone thought I was too odd for not eating more. Most people know that I have been trying to lose weight since the beginning of the year. We walked a ton on the trip. I am going to weigh myself tomorrow morning to see if there was any weight loss on the trip due to the exercise. I am happy to report that I barely felt hungry at all!!!! I'm going to back to liquids until my 20th day and then I'll stay with mushies.

    ????????Quick Question❓

I have tried it in many things but not crystal lite. I love it in my morning coffee. I whisk the powder with my sugar free creamer real well then add my coffee. It is awesome and love to be able to get some of my Protein intake for the day without really tasting the protein. By the way it is nasty in yogurt.

    where ??

Look on Amazon I get my protein mixes there. I like the plain Isopure for adding to juice, broth, sf koolaid, yogurt and sf pudding.

    "Powerful Yogurt" brand

My flavored greek yogurt has 12-15 g Protein and under 15 carbs. I often take plain greek yogurt and add flavored Protein powder to it making it over 40g protein for only about 8 carbs.

    Food progression?

It seems to be different depending on your surgeon and nutritionist. I only had 10 days of liquids/cream soups/yogurt and then was able to transition to solids. I didn't have a puree and soft foods phase. I have limited foods to eat - lean Proteins and veggies and the only veggies are summer squash, zucchini and green Beans. And my surgeon's pre-op was not liquids. It was lean proteins and veggies 3 meals a day and 2 Protein shakes. Or you could have a WW or Lean Cuisine meal as long as it had less than 300 calories and at least 20 grams of protein.
  25. I had gastric bypass on January 27, so I'm 8 weeks out. I'm still on a mostly liquid diet, as I am in a great deal of discomfort/pain whenever I try to eat food. I can handle yogurt whips, Protein shakes, broth, mashed potatoes, and that's it. The surgeon is hoping I'm just a slow healer, but it feels like more than that Anyone else experience that?
