My Journey - the beginning
AmandaPal replied to AmandaPal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you! As someone who expects to excel at everything I do, it's been hard for me to recognize obesity as a disease and weight loss as something I can't "win" at despite trying over and over again. I am fully aware this is a ridiculous attitude but sometimes my biggest hurdle is myself. That's why I'm starting with small goals that I know I need to start now in order to achieve the best results. Thanks so much for your response! -
I signed my consent at the surgeons office this past Tuesday, and my surgery is not till November 6th. Dr did weight me as he does at every visit. I already had the date prior to signing @scarlep. Good luck!

I would definitely ask the doc about stool softeners. If those don't work then maybe a magnesium regiment or fiber supplement. Talk to him soon, u do not want too constipated. Are u measuring the amount of ur puréed food? And if ur bowels are full u r probly retaining that weight and water weight. Call him and see what u can take!

Still feeling nauseous
Creekimp13 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Too much sugar makes me feel crappy. If you still have your gallbladder, you might want to have it checked. Gallbladder disease will present with evening nausea for many people, and it's very common after rapid weight loss. -
Told my Mother I was having surgery and her repsonse is.........
Diana_in_Philly replied to reachbree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@reachbree Your hubby needs to man up. If something happened, he would pick up the phone and call and tell them what happened. If he knew you would be greeted with the kinds of "support" you are getting (sarcasm font needed here) from your mom, then he may not be supporting you. That sounds like undermining to me. He needs to stand up for you and your emotional health. It sounds like dealing with your mom is not emotionally healthy for you. If she tells your sisters and they bring it up with you, my suggestion is asking when was the last time they were tested for an STD. When they pitch a fit, just tell them you are showing interest in their health just like they are showing one in yours and change the subject. My mother would say the same thing to me - which is why I'm not telling her and she lives less than two miles away from me. I'm not telling her about the overnight hospital stay. I'm not saying anything. If she asks at any point about my weight loss (since she has called me fat, ugly and stupid since I was 5), I'll say I'm following a diet my doctor prescribed. Not a word more. However, my mother is toxic and I don't care what she thinks. -
Tier 3 weight management programme-NHS England
diboing replied to Melanie AH's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I had mine (band) in Birmingham. We had to do a 6 month education programme, where you attend once a month for 6 months. Then you see a dietician again, get referred to the weight Loss consultant, then to a surgeon and then the waiting list. It does take time but it gave me the time to think about the surgery and really make up my Mind Hope that helps Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Compliments From The Father-In-Law
LorenaVaca posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went and saw my FIL today (first time since surgery) and as soon as i walked up to him he said hola and right after said in spanish wow Te vez mas flaca meaning wow you look skinnier...lol it felt good but it was so hard for me to take it as a compliment rather then take it offensively. He of course asked if it was from being sick and if im better now? The thing is my mother in law knows all about my surgery because she is like my best friend so i of course told her (shes lives in Mexico while my father in law lives here to work and support the family) but my FIL does not really know exactly everything about my surgery i assume by him asking if im better and not sick anymore that my MIL told him i was sick and had surgery. In the end feels good to know that whatever lil weight ive lost since Aug 7th is visible at that by someone who i hardly since and didnt really realize how much he paid attention to me... -

I feel like a looser
MINI-Me replied to JaspersGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are doing just fine ... your body is your body ... everyone is different. You've lost over 5 pounds a week. Bet you couldn't do that BEFORE surgery. Just take each day at a time ... Celebrate each pound. Follow your plan and your weight will go down! -
I am approx 5wks post op. I have only lost 26lbs, is this normal? I have seen other people have lost approx 40lbs , I feel like a fat looser. Not even surgery can help me loose weight. It really made me depressed. I feel like a whiny little brat but it's house I feel. I need some words of encouragement please. Seriously, how much did everyone loose?

@@2tired2befat lol! I'm not surprised. You have the ones who don't understand weight struggles. Then you have the ones that are comfortable being overweight and thinks you should too. Then you have the ones that are straight up dramatic and freaks out over everything. My Mom and I are pretty close I mean we have our share of differences but She knows my struggle. She too has struggled much longer than I. Shes been overweight pretty much all of her life with some yo yo dieting successes and fails. My struggle came later. Around 28 then I was diagnosed with PCOS. Ever Since I've lost and regained (+5) each time the same 50 lbs. +5 turned into another 35-40 lbs on top of the original 50 and now you have the makings of somones heading to their episode of TLC's my 600lb life. In fact I will admit she was a little salty that I did not include her in my initial decision so that she could've completed the journey with me. Cause again she now wants to do it. I told her she can watch me and decide if she really wants to go through it cause this is no split second decision. I want to tell others. Other family members, friends, coworkers but I knew they would give me that whole "Really??? I mean do you really need to go so extreme???" I don't need to defend my reasons. I'll be happy to share once they begin to notice my transformation and ask me what I'm doing. Until then... I'm doing it for me. -
My second fill will be on Monday. I'll have to keep reading your blog to see how you're doing. My doctors office goes slowly too. I haven't gotten sick yet, but I can feel it when I eat too much or too quickly. I hope this fill speeds up your weight loss.

Yummy Breakfast Bars- PEANUT BUTTER CRAVINGS
jingleboob posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just wanted to share a recipe I've made a few times and the whole family loves... got it from Weight Loss SUrgery Cookbook for Dummies. mix : 1/3 c instant oats 1 1/3 c Wheat Chex 2/3 c crispy brown rice Cereal (available in the gluten free section) 2/3 c sliced almonts melt : 1/2 c natural creamy Peanut Butter 1/3 c honey in a saucepan... it doesn't have to boil, just get hot all the way through. Remove from heat and add 1/4 tsp butter flavoring. Pour over cereal mixture and mix well, press into an 8" square pan sprayed with cooking spray and let cool. Cut into 8 bars. Wrap each bar in saran wrap and they're good for a week... but they won't last that long in my house. I have the calories and everything else at home... I will update. I remember it's 6 g of Protein and I think around 200 calories. An easy and delicious way to get in your whole grains for the day and the kids LOVE THEM. I've been using a little more peanut butter and honey as it just wasn't enough to make it all stick together well, maybe just an extra tablespoon or two. They're crunchy and sweet, I haven't had any trouble getting or keeping them down. And I love having these on hand for a snack or Breakfast for the kids... no bad stuff in it! -
Hi everyone, I was banded 3/12 in Houston, TX. The decision to have lap band surgery was something I never imagined... in my wildest dreams. I have struggled with food and weight my entire life. I am not sure if I got an unfortunate slow metabolism naturally or through being forced to diet endlessly or its food addiction. Perhaps a, b and c? All I know is that I have never had a "normal" realtionship with food. A lifetime of deprivation always made me want more. Diet mentality haunts me like a wicked ghost. Good carbs vs. bad carbs, doesn't matter I like them all. Nothing but this band could stop me from wanting more. OA wasn't for me- that was just more deprivation. I want to know if it is possible to eat to live and not live to eat. Thus,my journey begins. Hoping to be able to walk into the GAP and not be told my sizes aren't carried in the store and I have to order online. Hoping to improve my health. Hoping to be the person I have only imagined... in my wildest dreams.

Bypass or Lap band
Ginger Snaps replied to redwings fan's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you look at the average weight loss by surgery, the RNY has a much higher percent of excess weight loss. My doctor told me he will only do the band on really young women who are highly motivated, no kids... and he prefers not to do them at all. Personally, even before he told me that, I wouldn't have gone with the band. I can't come to grips with the idea of having something implanted in me and having to have the fills. My RNY has been basically painless... lost 25 pounds the first month (and I'm a relative lightweight -- that's over 10% of my starting weight). One month out, no nausea, no vomiting, no pain -- eating healthy (small) portions now and loving the feelings of no hunger... food doesn't control me any more. Ginger -
Talking to friends and family who have had wls in the past
Ashlegal replied to RnyMallory's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a good friend who had Lap-Band about five years ago and I have a co-worker who had Lap-Band two years ago. Both of them have not only had yo-yo'd weight loss but horrible complications due to the Band. When I mentioned to either one of them about my decision for Bypass, they both acted like I sprouted second head. They didn't understand why "I'd choose something so extreme, when the band has worked for them." I am glad that I could see through their denial and overcome my fear of doing something much more permanent than the Band. -
I would like to hear some success stories that are a year out and how much weight they have
-
Way to go!!! Be proud for taking these steps! They're bigs ones . I am so excited for you and I hope that your journey to getting the band goes well! If you have any questions I'm always around Good luck and congrats again on taking the steps! I am close to your weight and what not. I was close to 300 (I'm 5'3'') right before my surgery I was at 253.6! It's worth it!

I haven't had any complications with the band. I have gained some weight back lately, but it was due to my own problems and had nothing to do with the band. I had gotten down to 192.4 and now I am back up to 207 :rolleyes2: it wasn't the fault of the band...it was just me. The only "problem" I had was when I went in for my first fill they had some trouble finding it and had to wiggle the needle around a little bit (doesn't really hurt, just felt weird) other than that things have been great!!!

anyone banded in los angeles?
FailureIsntAnOption replied to dainadain's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello, I too have Kaiser and was told they will not do the band and if I wanted it I could go to Mexico which is what I did. I am so angry at Kaiser at this point since I was lied to. They do the band, it's just too costly for them with all the fills and follow-up. I went to Mexicali, Mexico for my band and although I was very nervous, Dr. Alberto Aceves came very well recommended. Everything went extremely well and even though Kaiser has agreed to do my fills, I still prefer to return to Mexicali for them. It is only a 3 hour drive and the fills are done under fluoroscopy whereas Kaiser subs it out and fills are not done this way. I wish you luck on your journey and much success with your weight loss. Can't Stomach Solids---anyone Else...ideas?
PdxMan replied to dreamy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in the same boat. I couldn't eat solids and had a very real fear of them, too. It only took one or two bites and I felt terrible. So, I kept with my Protein shakes and ate what I could. I'm at 5 months and I would say I am still not on full solids, yet. I can't imagine eating a hamburger patty. Oye! My main go-to meal is diced up (really diced) chicken or tuna and throw it in salads with blue cheese. I don't do low cal/carb dressings, either. I have chili with sharp cheddar cheese about every lunch. Breakfast is a Protein shake. Morning snack is a V-8. Afternoon snack is prunes. If I don't think I am getting my protein in, I grab a shake. I pretty much eat throughout the day, but I also exercise a lot, too. I don't eat any breads. They make my stomach hurt. I have a wee bit of noodles occassionally, just to get them introduced to my tummy. Small bowl of ice cream a couple times a week. I don't worry too much about it. My weight loss have been better than I expected. I'm doing what I can and keep pushing myself. This has worked for me, perhaps it can work for you. Just do the best you can and it will come together. -
One thing my psych suggested is to keep an index card or photos of what my ultimate reason for the weight loss goal is in my purse or on me at all times so that if I think of food I'll remember that whatever it is I want right now is not as important as the long term goal which is to live for my kids and grandkids.

Told my Mother I was having surgery and her repsonse is.........
Clementine Sky replied to reachbree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so grateful to be the exception. Not only has my mom been tremendously supportive of my surgery, she insisted on paying for it and being by my side. I've made it into my early 30s without my mom having ever made me feel crazy or stupid about anything, much less personal healthcare choices. My husband is a physician, and I'm a professor, so she knows we're keen on educating ourselves before making momentous decisions. She's also known that I've struggled with my weight for years, and how it has impacted my quality of life in a myriad of ways. When I first told her about wanting to have the VSG she was mildly surprised only because she didn't think I'd qualify for it since I was a size 14, and definitely overweight but barely into the obese category. My endocrinologist had recommended the VSG to me because other patients my age and size who have PCOS have benefitted from it. I sent my mom the medical research on women with PCOS having the VSG, and she became as committed to me having it as my husband. Insurance wasn't going to cover a cent of the costs because my BMI was under 35, and she was initially concerned about that aspect. Local surgeons were going to charge $29,000 to $35K. My husband and I are still paying off student debt, so that was unfeasible. I did research on having surgery in Mexico, and sent it all to her. She got on board. She insisted on giving us the money for the surgery. Since my husband was working the week of the surgery, she and my dad flew out to be my support team and accompany me to Mexico. In the ten months since having the surgery, only my parents and my husband know about it, which has been perfect for me because they've given me all the support I need. I can't even put into words how much I appreciate her and my dad.
