November Surgery Buddies!!!
summerseeker replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello every one, I hope the world of wonderful weight loss is great for everybody and all stalls have broken. I have just come out of a 4 week stall and am overjoyed. My calorie intake was just too small to let my body loose anything. Now that I can eat fish and seafood my protein intake is going up to about 50 grams a day. I have no problems drinking anymore and am feeling the health benefits of that. Its been a bit of a struggle but I am getting there a little slower than lots of you but I dont mind being a straggler. My dietician said to begin exercising so I am going to begin walking. The weather is horrid here and I am going to have to force myself out of the door. I have started leaving clothes on the too big to clean up in pile. Instead of skirts sliding up my belly to my bra, now they slide off if I dont catch them quick enough . Not good when the postman comes. Have a good week everyone -
Hi everyone! I'm Shelley... 32 years old and mum of 4 mini me's! I have been contemplating surgery for a few years now and have finally made the decision to go ahead! I'm based in the UK but will be having my surgery privately as these surgeries are not easily available on the NHS. After my initial consultation last week my surgery has been booked for 12th April 22 with my pre op taking place on the 25th March! A very quick turnaround which is great for me as i'm a bag of nerves! I found this forum while google searching for other peoples experiences, thought I would join, say hello and share my journey.

July 2021 Surgery People!
Sammys_VSG_Evolution replied to Sammys_VSG_Evolution's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I hit a milestone this week of 50kg lost. Which is around 110lbs. I can't believe I've lost so much and I feel so much better thanks to this surgery 😊 I am about 75% to my goal now and even though the weight loss is slowing down, I never thought I would be this weight by February! 😁 -
Can I start the next diet stage earlier?
Arabesque replied to idk4w's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Always best to follow your surgeon’s plan. It’s there for a reason: to support your post surgical healing & recovery. Remember all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together - all because you can’t see them, they’re there & they take time to heal. (Think of a wound with multiple stitches on your arm or leg & how long that takes to heal & how careful you have to be to ensure you don’t stretch or strain it.) While all plans a different, most are on liquids for two weeks or more before staring purées. And it’s not unusual for people to struggle on the next stage & find they need to go back a step for a couple of days. Glad you’re feeling so well after your surgery. -
Hi, I'm new here... I'm wondering about the stages of diet. If I feel up to it, can I take a few bites of very mushy or pureed food if I'm still in the full liquid phase? I'm not talking about anything major, but foods from the next phase. Eggs, cottage cheese, sugar free pudding... I basically just began phase 2 but it feels the same as stage 1 to me. (I'm not a full week out yet, but my dr said to begin phase 2 on 5 days out, which was yesterday... today was a big turning point for me in terms of strength and pain, and I'm TOTALLY sick of the liquids! I'd love to take in a little bit of something real.)

What’s your pre-op diet/macros/calories?
mrsjo posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Still in the pre-op phase here. Just wondering what everyone else is doing for diet? I had lost 10% of my weight at the 6 month preop time. Now I’ve gained back 5-7 pounds and can’t get past it. Up and down and back and forth. Wondering what you all are following as far as calories, macros, etc that seems to be working. Not sure if my body just freaked out at the 10% mark but I’m really struggling and I’d like to lose as much as possible before surgery if I can. I’m exercising doing CrossFit or walking/yoga 5-6 days a week. Any advice? -
At what point did you stop losing? I’m almost at a year, and have gone up/down the same 2 pounds for 2 months. I am happy at this weight (would love to lose another 10-15 pounds to be at a “normal” BMI), but am wondering if this is typically the end of weight loss. I’m feeling pretty good about continuing the daily maintenance it would take to stay this way long term. I’m not willing to do much else to lose weight because mentally, I feel I’d start obsessing, which would backfire eventually. I want to be at peace and not gain. 😊

Seven years out - experiences and lessons learned
Flab-U-Less Forever replied to shriner37's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for posting! After reading it, I am very glad I made the decision to go the RNY route instead of sleeve which was my original choice. I suffer from GERD and a sliding hiatal hernia that has me in pain most days. Until the pre op work up, I didn't realize I had either. I had assumed everyone suffered from heartburn. I would usually "just deal with it" without any meds. I made a point to start taking Tums EVERY time I had heartburn and the amount I was taking was quite the eye opener. I am excited to have the operation on March 3rd and get rid of the pain hopefully forever. Good Luck next week!!! -
Today is 4 months post op. I'm feeling way behind. Lost 35 pounds

P.S. If you stick to your clinic's plan and your overall weight trend is down, you're good. Some of us lose faster than others for a variety of reasons, that someone above listed. I was a slow loser from the get-go but followed my program to a "T", and I lost 100 % of my excess weight, over 200 lbs. As I wrote above, I was about at the same place as you are when I was 11 weeks out. So don't worry - you are doing just fine! -
Bypass Patients, Can you share your food reactions?
catwoman7 replied to Mona Ometuruwa's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
it's caused by eating too much sugar in one sitting (or for some people, fat). Your small intestine goes into overdrive trying to deal with it. The most common symptoms are sweating, chills, heart palpitations, dizziness, and diarrhea. Throwing up after eating something that doesn't agree with you - or after overeating - is NOT dumping (contrary to popular belief...) that said, only about 30% of RNY patients dump - and it can be controlled by limiting the amount of sugar you eat at one sitting (or again, fat for those who dump on fat). I have never dumped, but I still feel kind of crappy if I eat too much sugar or fat. I can eat it, just not gobs of it at one sitting. I can eat all of that stuff you mentioned except for the fat laden meal. My husband and I used to go out for Friday night fish fries before I had surgery. Those typically included two or three pieces of fried cod (with tartar sauce), French fries, cole slaw made with mayo, and a roll with butter. Eating that now would have me in the bathroom throwing up. But I could definitely handle maybe one fried fish filet (provided the things I ate with it weren't fatty), or a few fries. I can also handle a normal portion of ice cream (we're talking maybe 1/2 C) - although some people can't handle ice cream at all. It seems to be a common culprit for setting off G/I distress in some patients. people are so different that all you can really do is try it and see (although wait at least a couple of months - you don't want to eat that stuff while you're still healing!!). Some people can handle it just fine - others can't. -
Welcome to the forum you will go three all sorts of emotions but good luck with your nutritionist and your surgery

I was told to stop my Prenatal a week before and start it again a week after. Not told to use a chewable. Then the calcium and b-12 are to be started at 6 weeks post op. I'm starting my liquid diet Monday and was given gabapentin to start 3 days before and a nausea patch for the night before to keep on the day of as well. My hunger didn’t come back for ages - more than a year. Up until recently I still often had times I wasn’t hungry but now hardly ever which is sad. I also wasn’t interested in eating for a few months after surgery. I ate to a routine - stuck to three meals a day because I realised I needed to eat for my body to function. My calorie intake was pretty low for a while - barely 900 calories at 6 months & starting maintenance & was often less. Eating to a routine did help change my relationship with food a lot. I looked at food for the nutritional benefit it would give me rather than for any other thing (comfort or soothe, or some other emotional reason, etc.). Food still had to be tasty because if it wasn’t I wouldn’t eat it or eat much of it. It may take time to see what foods you easily tolerate. Don’t be afraid to eat a small rotation of food options to begin.

I told some people but not others. When I took up a new work contract 4 weeks after surgery they just presumed it was a ‘female surgery’ which I never corrected cause they didn’t have to know. You could say you’ve been having some digestive issues so they did an exploratory but found nothing untoward. You’re being very careful with your diet to see if that helps. Whatever story you go with for those super inquisitive people (we all know those people) just be comfortable with it. All the best with your surgery.

I only told my husband, mother, son, and his girlfriend. It got kind of dicey because I ended up in the hospital an extra week. I didn’t go out to dinner with the rest of the family during the liquids and soft food phases. Now I can eat regular food and I get a to go box and take most of it home or just get an appetizer.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???
OutdoorsGirl replied to Jersey Girl in Tampa's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It is scary and the first week is the worst. Once you’re into the regular food stage, it gets pretty easy and you forget about the unpleasant first days. -

catwoman7 replied to GiGi 1970's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just checked my monthly weight records. I just did it by the month, not the week (at least in my Excel spreadsheet), so this isn't exactly 11 weeks, but at the three-month mark, I'd lost 39 lbs. You're not quite at three months, but you will be in another week or two. So we're roughly the same. And I started out well over 300 lbs. -

Sleeve here you need to look at what is rite for you , how much weight you need tk loose and so on I had sleeve I was 100 lbs. over weight I’ve lost 40% in 2 months this was rite for me but have a friend that got sleeve also 1 week before me I think she should had done the bypass she is much larger then me and is eating way to much. So you need to be honest with your team and see what is best for you , you can always get sleeve and go back if it wasn’t rite but you can’t go to just a sleeve from a bypass.

Gigi I am almost exactly 3 months post op and I have lost 33lbs. I'm sure you know that SO many things affect the rate at which we lose weight - starting weight, age, hormones, fitness level, exercise level - not just calorie intake. I already see my loss slowing down but I am in this for the long haul. People who hit a long stall will try to increase protein, increase calories, try a different exercise regime - maybe upper body only for you - or even resistance bands to try to build a bit of muscle? In any case you shouldn't be bummed - you've lost a significant amount of weight, you're already way healthier, and if you stick to your programme you're likely to lose even more. -

If it makes you feel better: since posting that I’ve completely stalled and have gotten insane stomach cramps. I’m going to the Dr on Monday because it hurts so much. Hang in there! From everything I read and heard it’s the once that lose “slow” and steady that are the most successful long term! -
Loving Protein-Packed Kodiak Bear Bites
GradyCat posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I learned about these from a grocery haul video on YouTube. If you remember the old Teddy Grahams from the 1990's (do they still make those?) they remind me of those or kinda like animal crackers. They're called KODIAK BEAR BITES and they are graham crackers in three flavors: Chocolate, Honey, or Cinnamon. They are adorable and I even like the design of the box, as if that was important. A single serving (as if you could eat just one serving!) is 15 crackers, for 120 calories, 17 carbs, 2 fibers, 5 g protein, and 3.5 g fat. -
Thank you! Yeah, I don't know if I had screwed up my metabolism or what...but I was workin my tail off and getting nowhere! Then I would give up, eat whatever I wanted for a week, gain another 10 pounds, and start the cycle all over again. Good luck with your surgery! You will be amazed at how quick it comes off! February 2022 Surgery Buddies
MimmyMim replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my one week post op appointment today. I am down 16 pounds since my pre op appointment on 1/28. My doctor had me eat an egg before my appointment today to see how I tolerated it. I did okay. So, he wants me to transition to two Protein Shakes a day and one puréed “meal” (2 ounces) starting tomorrow. He really drove home the importance of 64 ounces of Water each day. (I have been hitting 48-56 a day). He said I could go back to work on Monday but to be very aware that my energy level will likely be low. So, I am pleased with the appointment and look forward to going back in a month! -
Amazing progress! Good job! So funny you said that about the CrossFit workouts! I’m now 7 1/2 months in pre-op. Stepped it up to CrossFit 4-5 days a week from 3 and since I hit the 10% loss I’ve gone nowhere and even gained about 5 pounds back! I can’t figure it out. Eat more, eat less, who knows! Gives me hope that surgery really will help!
