ohhh one more thing!!!!..... I got a call from pacific Bariatric and they set me up for my 3 day appointment with them for June 14th! =) then shortly after that I will get my surgery date. I will keep everyone posted! -
I can answer your questions. I had the same orientation you had. I met with a nutritionist for 6 months and had to log my food choices too. She said I was one of the most successful ones in pre-op weight loss. She knew I was a person who followed the rules. She explained all the food choices that would be appropriate. She had all the fake food in her room (you know a rubber hamburger patty, the empty boxes of diet frozen food, etc..) to show portion size and healthy choices. Before I even contemplated the LB, I had lost about 20lbs on my own. Then another 20 with the 6 month diet. I, too, had to go on a liquid diet two weeks before and 2 weeks after the surgery. Another 20 lbs. So, I had lost 60 lbs before the band even had a chance to work. My BMI was 34.8 before surgery. I not only had a psych evaluation but every other conceivable test there is - heart, gallbladder, upper GI, chest x-ray, EKG, stress test, sleep study. I was banded September 2008. Part of the problem was my former surgeon. He was a general surgeon who kept his general surgery practice while jumping on the $$$ WLS bandwagon. He and his partner took over a retiring WLS's practice. Even though I had lost a lot of weight at this point, at my first post-op visit, my surgeon wanted me to lose 10-15 lbs. in 3 weeks, without a fill. Not only is that unrealistic for how much more weight I had to lose, but not within the guidelines of 1-2 lbs. a week. This should have been my first red flag. Then when I didn't lose any weight at that second visit, I got the come to Jesus talk and about how the band is only a tool (I have learned to hate that statement). I told him what I ate, a Smart Balance dinner and he said to throw them out. I told him the nutritionist promoted them in her office and they should be on the same page. I received a 2cc fill at that time. I lost a few founds before my next fill of 1 cc. Then I started having big time problems. Heartburn, reflux, pain, the inability to even drink a sip of Water in the morning to take my synthroid (the water seemed to come up) and you know what he said "don't take your pill then, take it another time". But the problems persisted and he ordered an endoscopy and upper GI. The GI doctor said my band looked high and tight and thought it was positioned too high. The upper GI showed that nothing much was getting through. It was only then, when my surgeon saw these results, did he have me come in immediately to get a slight unfill of 1cc. I was told that I had a 10 cc Allergan band, so I couldn't understand why 3cc's would cause so many problems. I was soon to find out. I knew at this time that I needed a second opinion. I got all my test results, including the CD's of all my upper GI's and took them to an experienced bariatric doctor at a center of excellence. He told me that I had a 4cc band and that it had a slight slip. Now I knew why I had so many problems. Plus, he was very impressed with my weight loss at that point (75 lbs. - 15 was from post band) whereas my former doctor never was. So, I quickly switched to this doctor. I did some research on my band and found it had an expiration date of June the following year (for sterility) and I think my former surgeon was using up old inventory before investing in new which is why I got an older band that isn't used much anymore, if at all. I followed all the rules, all my food choices were healthy. I made healthy choices when eating out. But in Dec. 2009 I had a major stuck episode that resulted in a trip to the ER and an overnight stay. All my fill was removed and that is where I am now. But here is the most important part of my story: At no point from no fill to 3cc fill did the band ever reduce my hunger or provide me with satiety. NEVER. And that stuck episode was so incredibly painful that I couldn't even talk. I NEVER, EVER, want to experience that again. So, as long as I am going to be hungry, at least I have reduced my chances of getting stuck. So, you see, the band doesn't work for everyone like it does for some, even when we follow the rules. I don't regret getting it because I doubt I'd have lost this weight without embarking on this journey - I mean I wasn't going to go on a liquid diet for 4 weeks. So, don't assume that when the band doesn't work it's because we aren't following the rules or changing our mindset. I have been dieting for 5 years this month. It started before the band. I have made healthy food choices during that time. I chew, don't drink with meals, etc.. but it just doesn't work for me and my current surgeon says it doesn't work for everyone.

Has any one used Alli after being sleeved? The subject of extreme constipation came up tonight with a group that gets coffee after the support meeting. The one woman is about 3 years out and she said she started taking Alli with one meal every other day for the last 6 months and that it helps hugely with the constipation. She has not been back to her bariatric but her primary said taking it at that low of a level with just 1 meal every other day would not be an issue. She had done well on her weight loss but is not underweight. She may be 20 to 25 pounds over ideal at this point. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or had asked about this. For those unfamiliar, this is the over the counter med that bonds with the fat in the meal you eat and passes it through your system instead of digesting it. She takes it with her "fattiest" meal, which isn't that fatty, but she said it's really "softening" things on the flip side of the meal. I'm really hoping I don't have this issue but it almost sounds like it's universal to WLS.

Beware of Mexico Bariatric Center (MBC)
NewBeginning2014 replied to dsteimen's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
If there was no sleeve procedure, MBC surgeon will perform gastric sleeve and the only charge she will be responsible is the revision part ($1400). Plus travel and related expenses, additional time off work, etc...for something that should have been done correctly the first time --and was paid for. I didn't even know a "loose sleeve" was an option...I haven't seen that term used in all of the research I have done. I will make sure I ask my Dr. about this. Mexico Bariatric Center fully paid for Debra Stienmen original surgery to Dr. Ramos Kelly. MBC has fulfilled its contractual obligations with Mrs. Steimen and deems it unnecessary to provide compensation at this time. Did Mexico Bariatric Center fully pay for Debra's surgery to Dr. Kelly with Debra's money that she paid to MBC for the surgery and additional services as contracted or did MBC fully pay for Debra's surgery as a gift to her? I understand Mexico Bariatric Center trying to defend themselves. The coordinators are not the ones performing the actual procedure and can't control the doctors actions in the OR. There is a level of professional business integrity that looks to be lacking. To say that Mexico Bariatric Center has gone "above and beyond in this case" may be a stretch. The actions of A Lighter Me, Janese and Sandy show what going above and beyond means. They were able to "clean up the mess" that Debra was in --- which should have been handled by MBC. It shows there was a way to work through the negative situation and make it right. Maybe if MBC had handled the situation differently, it would have portrayed them in a different light without a need for a rebuttal within this forum. The subject of obesity and the struggles with weight are very personal. I hope this was an isolated incident that was mishandled by a small representation of the business and doesn't reflect the core values of a company that should be customer focused. -
Beware of Mexico Bariatric Center (MBC)
dsteimen posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Hello, My name is Debra Steimen. It has taken me several months to recover from my mexico bariatric experience to talk on these forums. Now it is time. Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding my experience. If you don't ask you may fall victim to: Mexico Bariatric Center mexicobariatriccenter.com WeightLossMex.com SOURCiS, Inc., doing business as, Mexico Bariatric Center. Address: 705 E. Bidwell Suite 2-111 Folsom, CA Last April my lapband of 5 years slipped and needed removal. I was told that it would cost me $40.000 out of pocket to have it removed because my insurance did not cover the removal. Desperate, I contacted Christy at mexicobariatriccenter. Christy told me that the owner was in business for years leading me to believe that the company was in business for years. Christy was very believable and seemed very concern with my welfare. I trusted her and the company and went ahead to schedule a lapband removal and a gastric sleeve. Christy suggested that I use a specific doctor because of his experience, since she did not think the other doctors had enough experience with revisions. It would only cost me $6,500. My Surgery was scheduled a few weeks later. I arrived in San Diego and was taken to a little hospital. The Mi Hospital. I was being registered by a Mexico bariatric center assistant that seemed very shady. He made me feel uneasy. After being register I was moved to a normal hospital room. I was undressing when a staff member came in and told me I needed to be moved. I was then escorted down to a different floor in a room with no nursing attendant and no other patients. I was a little confused but I was trying to go with the flow until I realized my hand had swollen up three times it size. The needle that was inserted penetrated my vein. I rushed out into the hall asking for help by anyone that I thought could understand english. Finally someone ran upstairs to get a nurse. I was so freaked at this moment. Debra Swiszcz <dswiszcz@gmail.com> 4/9/13 to cindy Hi Christy, I'm pretty nervous right now. They have not been able to get an IV in me. I was put into one room and moved to another room down on the second floor. I don't think there is a-nurses station on this floor. Finally they called a surgery nurse to put the Iv into my hand. She thought she go it in however 20 minutes later I look down and my hand was swollen 4x it's size with fluids. People are all very nice here but I'm still a little confused about my room. It has no call buttons for a nurse. I had to run and find someone to look at the IV in my hand. I'm really getting worried about the safety. Sent from my iPad Debra Swiszcz Things didn't get better during my stay. I was in that room for a day and a half before they moved me into a real room. 4/12/13 to christy Hello Christy, I hope you had a nice day. I was up early and walked a total of 5 miles. I paced myself and did it in intervals. I spoke to Daniel this afternoon around 2pm and he told me doctor Kelly was going to stop by this evening with the return to work certificate. It is now 7:55 and I haven't heard anything from anyone. No note, not what time I should be ready in the morning to leave for the airport. It's a really good thing Im very independent and smart enough to reach out to you early enough so you can help with some answers. With that said. Can you please find out what time Victor will pick me up at the hotel? Victor told me that Daniel should have contacted me with the information. Also is doctor Kelly really coming or do We need to figure out another way for me to get note. I really don't understand why Daniel couldn't run the note over this afternoon to make sure it was in my hands. It's only a five minute drive. I really don't know what his problem is with me. Yesterday he's ask me if I would like him to pick up omeprazol since he was going for other patients. I.asked how much was it and he told me around $15.00. I didn't have change and I gave him a twenty. I told him he owed me five dollars back. Some how I knew he would not give me the money back. If he handed it back to me I probably would have told him to keep it but since he didn't bring it up again. I just though wow he thinks he deserves at 35% tip. He is leaving a bad taste in my mouth and today is just adding to the pot. Ps my phone does not work in Mexico. I'm in room 219 if you want to call me at the hotel. Warm regards, Debra S Desperate to have the revision that I went through hell, something I would never have accepted in the States. In Mexico I guess I just expected this was normal. I'm well traveled so once I was at the hotel I was pretty much on my own. I felt fine after the surgery and could eat just about anything I wanted. I was starving. What was wrong with me? Several months after the surgery I gained 20 lbs. I contacted the doctor and Mexico Bariatrics. No response. I finally got this email telling me to stop eating. "Really" Stressed and my whole self esteem deflated I just felt something was wrong. I contacted MBC and spoke to the owner Ron. I told him of my concerns. I didn't believe the doctor they recommended preform the gastric sleeve. He ask me to get some test done in the states to verify my concerns. Again out of my pocket $3000.00 later I was told by my doctor her in the states the procedure was not done. Mexico Bariatrics washed their hand of me. I was shit out of luck. My story got out to others by an x-employee of Mexico Bariatrics Janice from A LIGHTER ME called me and asked me about what had happened with my surgery. I told her my story and she was dumbfounded. She then confirmed the rumors I heard about Mexico Bariatrics. MBC was only in business for a few months at the time of my surgery. The owner Ron at MBC was the webmaster for a Lighterme and had no experience. Janice reached out to her boss and owner of A Lighter Me, Sandy Johnston. Sandy contact me herself and listened to my story. She was so nice. She offered me to come to Mexico with A lighter Me at cost to find out what exactly was performed on my stomach that cost me $6500. On February 2014 I had a surgery performed by Dr. Ortiz from A Lighter Me On his report ( I have copies ) It states that no gastric sleeve was performed. He himself performed the gastric sleeve. It is now two months later and I have lost about 10 pounds. I hear from Ronda the dietitian once every two weeks to make sure i stay on track Sandy the owner has called me as well as Dr. Ortiz himself. The care and concern from the staff at A lighter me has been wonderful. A difference of Night and Day from MBC. The moral of the story. Research carefully what you are about to do with your body in Mexico. The Dr. that performed my surgery was DR. RAMOS KELLY ( I am not the first patient that he has done this too.) Please if you have questions contact me. I would love to help anyone about to undergo a bariatric surgery in Mexico. -
Frustrating Weight loss workup
AvaFern replied to Ruth1ess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From a professional perspective, that psychologist is clearly in a situation where she has a conflict of interest. You are either a psychiatrist (therapist, psychologist, counselor, whatever the degree) or you are a consultant for a surgeon who also happens to have some kind of psych degree. It sounds like the person you met with was the latter, which is a misrepresentation. Unless she is a psychiatrist, she is not an M.D. and therefore has no qualifications for directing you toward a surgical intervention. If she represents herself as first a therapist and not as a consultant for the surgeon, she is almost at a point of an ethical violation when she didn't bother to get to know you at all before she pushed the surgery option. That is absolute garbage and I would have called her out on it. If she is a consultant who is clearly representing the surgeon, then eh, she sort of did her job even if I find her actions for her actual profession to be questionable. That said, she isn't entirely wrong in the sense that a lot of studies show a continued pattern of weight loss and gain in non-bariatric surgery patients. To be fair though, there are also plenty of studies that show a person who has had surgery can eventually gain all that weight back as well. There is one popular study that says that people are more likely to keep weight off when they've had bariatric surgery if they've also had plastic surgery. If you look hard enough there is a study that supports almost everything in some way. I personally did the weight loss and gain thing for years. I'd regularly lose 60-90 pounds, keep it off for a year or two, then gain it right back. I am very happy that I had the sleeve procedure done, although I am only 29 months post-op, so who knows if I will maintain over the next decade or even the next few years. I have had a far easier time maintaining at my goal weight now than I ever did in the past and I give my sleeve and it's penchant for making me puke if I eat the wrong thing the credit for that. Bariatric surgery is a very good option for many people and most of us are happy we had it done. It is however a personal decision and one that a person who claims to be practicing in the area of psychological counseling has absolutely no business making for you or pushing you toward. Her job was to guide you toward making whatever decision was right for you AND IF that was surgery, to determine if you are psychologically a candidate for the procedure, not to act like the doctor she most likely is not and tell you that only one type of action is going to help you lose weight. Professionally and ethically her actions are questionable, however that being said, if you take what she said and have it come from your surgeon or a friend who has had the surgery and who is well-researched on the topic, the points she made would not be entirely off base. -
Day 8 Pre Op Liquid Diet
Maggie143 replied to LACRACRA2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are doing great! It could be a little water retention. I buy those little crystal light drops and love them. Its ok to have that. There is no calories. The other thing I just got which might help you for when you get through surgery is NutriWise Protein drink enhancers. They are powder that you put in your water. 15 grams of protein so when you don't want a thing but have to get your liquid in - they are a life saver. I bought the Lemon Razzy and it was really good. I also purchased Bariatric Choice drink enhancers. The blue raspberry wasn't so good but the berry was really good. Also 15 grams of protein. I hope they help you. I bought them on Amazon. Can't wait to hear your good news - you're almost there! -
Complication after complication

I too had 2 strictures the first one being at 4 weeks out! However my bariatric surgeon performed my endoscopy and dilated me on the spot. Two weeks later I was sick again and went for a second endoscopy and again he dilated me on the spot! And that time it stayed. I cannot imagine going as long as you had to wait....I vomited non stop during my strictures and couldn't eat or take Vitamins. That's a very long time to feel miserable. Sorry you had to endure such. Prayers your complication days are over! Sent from my SM-G900F using the BariatricPal App -
I’m on day 5 post op. Everything seems to be going pretty well. My Dr has moved me to phase 2 eating, creamy soups, yogurts ith fruit flavor no pieces of fruit. Also soft boiled egg To go along with my protein shakes. I started my bariatric vitamins B12 dissolveable tablet, Calcium Citrate 1000mg chewable(not so great) and a multi that looks like a starburst candy!!!! So far I have been walking abouT 1.5-2 miles each morning( not today 12in snow) I find it easier to drink while on my walk rather than sitting down. I have to say that I am not hungry at all. I know I have to eat which I am doing getting in 60-80g protein and 64 oz liquids. It’s just weird that I’m not looking to graze in the fridge!!!! Also I am keeping a food journal, times and how much and protein taken in and am also using Baritastic app to track weight and goals and food as well. Might be a little over kill the journal but for now I seem to like it. Just wanted to share my first week with everyone because I’m proud of the work I’m doing!!!!

No, I don't, sorry. I only know Aetna because that's the insurance I have & they sent me the link. You might try a Google or Bing search for BCBS bariatric surgery criteria, surgery for morbid obesity, medical necessity criteria & similar & see what comes up. I did find a few for BCBS when I was looking to compare criteria from different companies, but not Florida. Remember that this is medical necessity criteria, not insurance contract coverage. First, whatever the service is needs to be covered by the contract. Then, even if it is medically necessary, if the contract excludes it, it would not be covered. Unfortunately, bariatric surgery is excluded in the contracts many employers purchase. That was always one of the most difficult things to try to explain when I worked as a clinical review nurse. Hopefully, now that obesity is classified as a disease in & of itself, surgical treatment will be an option for many more people.

Can I proactively prevent hair loss PRIOR to surgery?
stacyrg2 replied to duckydoom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got in all my Protein and Fluid, religiously took all my Vitamins, including Biotin and my hair loss started around 3 months post op. You can be the perfect bariatric patient and that doesn't mean it won't happen. I lost about 1/3 of my total hair volume. It has now grown back. Good luck! -
I was sleeved on Monday September 12th so of course I'm on a strict liquid diet this week. It is almost impossible to get my Protein in because the only thing I can have that contains protein are the Bariatric Advantage shakes mixed with Water or New whey Liquid Protein shots. Both make me physically sick when I try to drink them. I'm wondering how badly it'll effect me to not get all my protein until Tuesday? Because that's when I can start full liquids and can drink the normal Protein Shakes again! I'm nervous I'm going to mess everything up. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

1st Consult Appt Wed. 12/21
Finding_Stacy replied to az062217vsg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Lorin, so how did it go today? Not as well as I had hoped. It looks like I likely won't qualify for insurance to pay for the surgery. I am a little taller than I thought, so my BMI is below 40 and I do not have any comorbidities (I did have back surgery for a herniated disc due to being overweight and have hypothyroidism so when we submit to insurance we will try including those). If we are going to try the insurance route I need to do a medically supervised diet for 6 months. The nurse practitioner and bariatric coordinator both said to not lose much weight though during the 6 months since my BMI is already below 40. The self-pay cost would be $18,025. I think I am going to check with one more surgeon in town to see what his self-pay prices would be (he is also at a closer hospital to my house). I will probably go with the surgeon with the cheaper self-pay price, so that if insurance does deny after the 6 months of dieting I can move forward with a loan. Awe, I'm so sorry. I'm kind of surprised they knew already that insurance wouldn't cover it. I think I'd call them myself. I know it sounds like a 'hell no' idea, but I've read so many people going to a specific place in Mexico and having it done. An all inclusive place, one week stay, for 4k. At first I was thinking they're crazy but thousands of patients go there with rave reviews. But if I was self pay and could afford it, of course I'd go with a qualified doctor state side. All I can say is don't give up. Do you have sleep apnea by chance? Have you ever had a sleep study? My three things that will qualify me with my insurance is my bmi, hypothyroidism, and sleep apnea. I don't have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes-->knock on wood. But I too had something thrown at me today that I sort of thought was a possibility, but hoping it wouldn't be the case. My doctor wants me to have the ds done and I just don't know how I feel about that. It would be broken up into two surgeries, sleeve first, then in 6-12 months the ds part. I just don't know. That is the mac daddy of weight loss procedures. I'm not sure why he and his nurse practitioner was so persistent to get me on board. Yes, I want the sleeve but I am trying to have an open mind because he really does know what he's talking about and has seen the outcomes thousands of times. But it's not like they're doing the ds at my first surgery anyway, so not sure why the pressure to get me to jump on board quite so soon before we give the sleeve a try, unless of course, it's to bill insurance even if the first surgery is the sleeve. I don't know why he doesn't say 'ok, sleeve first and if the results stop coming in, let's go ahead and do the ds.' That sounds reasonable. -

I agree we are bombarded with weight loss Information and online forums to beat weight loss, diet, surgery, fitness, eating disorders and body image into the ground. Wow, I don’t see many of these topics and being a closeted subjects. To each there own about disclosing WLS. Some may want to shout the lifesaving benefits of WLS to the world. Others may simply be private people that keep their medical info to themselves. Some of us share with only people that are honestly interested. No need to beat your head against the wall with the many people that have negative opinions on WLS. Are we lacking in getting the word out on WLS? No – Google it! About 253,000,000 results (0.65 seconds) TV shows: Many discussing weight, WLS, my 600 pound life, Celebrities sharing there WLS experience, skin removal, diet, eating disorders, exercise, body positivity. Social media: Drs and hospitals advertising WLS, Instagram, bloggers, bariatric recipe site, pod casts, fitness and food log apps, YouTube and forums including bariatricpal. How many of these accounts are WLS patients and professionals? With all this information out there, Many of us don’t feel the need to be the weight loss or weight loss surgery spokesperson. Approvals with BCBS Federal

Hello all you lovely people My name is Susan and I subscribe to this thread and have been following it..."lurking" if you will. I am VERY angry with my bariatric surgeon's staff. Maybe you all can help me? My husband and I are both jumping through the bariatric hoops in the hopes to be approved for the sleeve. Because my husband is diabetic and his health is primary, I have been firm in that I would like him to have surgery before me. The doctor and staff understood and set up the nutrition and dr supervised appts within the 90 day period, which I know you all know about. They told him on his last appt that his 90 days start from his first nut appt, not his first dr sup'd appt. These two appts were 2 months apart due to their scheduling. So now they are saying that his 90 days extends to the end of May when it was supposed to be all wrapped up THIS month. Please advise me. Did your 90 days start with the NUT appt? Is that true? I'm so pissed. This is what THEY do all day, every day! And they screwed it up and just say "oh, sorry". I can't tell you how depressed we are over this. Thank you all. -

I could never have imagined that in March I would call the bariatric center and start this process and be ONE MONTH out at this time! I'm halfway to my goal...and I'm so thankful. Good luck with your appointments and pre-surg diet. I am sorry to hear about your uncle. I lost my mom in Feb so I know what you mean by rough. Let me know if you want a referral credit at Bariatric choice. They have all kinds of protein and food and snacks as well as vitamins. You can use the credit on anything. I can't stand the calcium horse pills so I get the cake bites, but their protein bars and snack bars are good too. I know you are getting excited. It will be here and be over before you know it. I can't believe I am 2 1/2 months out now! I am still dropping but hoped it would be more than it is. I have to look at the big picture though. I am only 50 lbs from the goal now. When I say it that way it sounds better. Lol. Good luck and keep me posted! -

I was feeling sore/very uncomfortable on the way to & back from DFW(taking Hubby back:cry_smile:). I stopped this side of Dallas & threw-up. I was dizzy & was really hurting. :confused_smile:I debated on trying to make it home or stay the night near by. I also wondered if I may be so hungry but didn't really know it. McDonalds was next door. I decided to try my luck & eat the most forbidden food in our new dictionary of foods to eat, french fries & a hamburger. I ate a small amount of fry's(approx 6) & 1/4 of the burger & felt better right away. Yes, I felt guilty but I made it home with 4 kids in tow...Please don't tell me I shouldn't have done that because it was the only thing near when I felt so aweful. I don't plan on doing it again... Will my first fill(Dec, 4th) help with feeling so aweful? I also have so much indigestion & diarrhea is horrible! My diet right now is lots of vegetables, jello, soup etc... My other questions are is anyone hurting under their left rib cage? Does anyone feel their port? My feels just like when I was pregnant & could feel my child's knee! What does a slip feel like? Please let me know what you all have been experiencing. Jean:confused:
