  1. Historically, I have always had low cholesterol (it had to be genetics!). The highest its ever been is 190 and the lowest was 160. 2 months prior to surgery, my CHOL was 170, TRIG = 51, HDL = 72 and LDL = 133. I am 5 months post op and had my labs done today by my PCP and my cholesterol is the highest ever - 221 with elevated HDL and LDL. I was SHOCKED. I am strict with my diet, I have had no sugar and carbs are at about 24 grams per day. I basically eat meat, veggies and low fat cheese and yogurt. I work out 7 days a week - swimming 2 miles a day, 3x per week and work out at least 30 minutes the other 4 days a week. I had better cholesterol levels when I ate crap! I have an appointment with my surgeon in April (I believe this is the visit where he will also draw labs for my 6 month check up). Has anyone else experienced increased Lipid results after surgery?

    Hi, just sleeved!

@@viri87 yogurt would not have been okay on my post-op plan, but plans vary a lot. Best to call your bariatric team and check in with them for guidance. Welcome and good luck!

    Hi, just sleeved!

thanks everyone, you guys are so helpful and supportive I really thanks God for each of you here and the support. By the way I am doing awesome on day 4, my only concern was getting my Protein down wich I found to sweet now and that is why I was asking about the yogurt but I end up mixing unflavored Protein powder with chicken broth, the only thing is that is not completly sodiun free but I hope is fine because at least I an getting my protein!!! Sent from my SM-N930T using the BariatricPal App
  4. So I had my sleeve done on the 18th.. Just now getting out the hospital and getting home to settle in. Been drinking 3-4 liters of water a day plus some little sorbets and yogurts here and there! Is there one who can tell me about the swelling and how long it usually lasts? How soon do you see changes in the tummy?

    Potassium deficiency

yogurt, sweet potatoes cantaloupe and spinach also good sources of potassium.Swiss chard, navy beans, lentils avocados, winter squash salmon Brussel sprouts and V8 juice. Of the top of my head, that's the ones I remember. There may be more that I'm not thinking,of. Hopefully there will be something on that list that may help. Almonds, cashews. pumpkin seeds. sunflower seeds all high in magnesium as well as broccoli. Could be a lack,of that, I remember they give magnesium sufate to slow down premature labor, if it works for those muscles stands to reason it might help, with cramping. 👍👌😝

    Good Vitamins for your hair?

Hey, I've had Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin and Nails Argan Oil infused supplements and it has been working very well for me. Although a major part of our hair and skin quality depends on the protein intake. Hence, I started eating a lot of protein rich foods including Tofu, Hummus, Yogurt and such. I also started with Ace Blend protein powder, as its natural and plant based powder, so the risk factor of side effects eliminates. It provides nourishment to skin and health as it has antioxidants so addresses our basic concerns too. I really like the product! You can try it too.

Tight band in the morning - what to eat

I have Greek yogurt mixed with a cup of blueberries every morning. I am a creature of habit, and I can eat the same meals every day, weeks on end. Unfortunately even the Greek yogurt is bit lacking in the Protein department, but it passes through a tight band in the morning with no problems. Once, when I mixed a bunch of my meds (big pills) I did have problems! I see you were banded several months ago--are you in the "green zone," or do you need more fills?

    Eating to fast?

Hey I'm 10 days out and I made the mistake of over eating already. I ate a whole Greek yogurt. Then I was going over my paperwork again and found out that I was only suppose to be eating like 4 table soon at one setting. I say that to say if u are allowed a cheese it may not be a whole cheese stick maybe just 2 oz. I agree with everyone else go back to just the liquids and maybe yogurt, apple sauce, cottage cheese light foods. This is the most important stage letting ur sleeve heal! Good luck . .

    Mexico Doctor Questions

I had Dr. Lopez, but had my surgery in Puerto Vallarta, so my experience may be a little different than those of others. Pre-op diet - two to three Protein shakes a day (I used EAS or Premier) and a sensible dinner (protein and veggie) Post-op diet - 2 days of clear liquids, 2 weeks of full liquids (pudding, Jello yogurt, strained Soups included), 2 weeks of blended/pureed, 2 weeks of soft solids Does the Doctor provide pain meds - Yes. I received 2 sample packs of ketorolac tromethamine (6 pills each) when I checked out of the hospital. Does the Dr./Nurse speak English clearly. I will be on my own. - The doctors speak very good English, the nurses in PV do not. Is there a TV and internet in the hospital. - Yes Do they give a leak test before leaving? -- I only had 2. One during surgery and 1 the day after surgery. How were incisions closed? Will I need a follow up in the states to have something removed -- The incisions are closed with internal, dissoluble sutures and external glue. No need for followup. Some of my internal stitches started spitting (coming out of the skin), which I am told is fairly normal. Hope this helps!

    Bummed and angry

@@Dub - Take heart, I had my son and four of his college buddies over at my house to watch football Saturday and I grilled up one heck of a spread and they even liked my re-fried bean dip with Greek yogurt. So life is great albeit in smaller quantities.

    Help!

@emk101009 wonderful weight loss how do you know hungry you "should" be???? "it" varies for all of us some of us might never have lost their hunger issues others maybe at 3 months others at.............. stalls happen to most all of us Get Over It must be patient - it will pass (like gas ) time periods/stalls will vary from 3 weeks to.............. God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up About It!!! We're all different we lose amount of weight in different time periods we lose inches at the beginning from different areas ie less boobs or less tushy!!! yogurt is not that filling but it is great, and has lots of Protein too you can never have too much protein during the day dense protein like chicken is wonderful - very filling you didn't chew thoroughly?? means you probably ate too fast too!!!! KNOCK IT OFF slow down with your eating and chew better that wouldn't cause you to stretch your sleeve after each bite, put your utensil down for a few seconds too use a baby spoon - that helps too i "think" many people at one time or another worry that they might have stretched their new little tummies as far as "stretching" your tummy eat wayyyy too much food, too fast all morning, noon, afternoon, evening & night in other words 24/7 grazing ALL day (like you/me did in the good 'ol days this will cause weight gain but as far as stretching the sleeve - don't "think"it happens follow all the rules and things should be good you'll get wrinkles if you worry toooo much good luck 43 lbs down!!! kathy congrats

    How much do eat.

Everyone's program is different. ON day 1 after surgery, I was on water and ice chips (30 mls water every hour). On day 2 after surgery, i was on 4oz of high protein shake or low-sodium strained cream soup three times a day, and 64 ounces of clear liquids. From day 3-day 14 (so now), I am allowed four 8 ounce high protein shake (less than 150 calories per 8 ounces), 32 ounces of clear fluids. Sugarfree popsicles count as clear fluid, but no jello post-surgery. I can substitute one of the protein shakes with strained low-fat healthy request cream soup or a light greek yogurt (Dannon light and fit Greek is what's recommended). Premier protein shakes are discouraged as they are made from whey protein concentrate (instead of isolate) and have oil, cellulose gums and gel, and carrageenan in them. After 2 weeks i will have a follow up visit with my surgeon and nut, and they will determine whether I advance to the pureed stage or stay on liquids for another week. I was on the liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-surgery, so it's getting pretty old. Yup, 19 days with no solid food so far, only 11 to go!

    Meal Prep

Breakfast is a tough one to prep. It just doesn't taste the same reheated or will have a nauseating smell when reheated. I usually do a protein shake, cream of wheat or Greek yogurt if I can't cook breakfast every day.

    Struggling With Pre-Op Diet

How you hanging in there? I thought I was the only one with a strict liquid only pre-op diet but you beat me.... Mine is 1000 calories of full liquids protein shakes, (50-70 Grams of protein) light yogurt fat free jello and pudding creamed soups If they are chunky I was instructed to put them in a blender and strain them all the tea crystal light and clear broth I want.... Today is my third day and I've surprised my self because I'm doing really good!! I haven't even done the full 1000 calories and am not starving....yet Oh yeah lucky me they moved surgery up a week so I only have a 6 day full liquid and 2 day clear liquid I've drank the RTD( ready to drink) muscle milk in vanilla and chocolate icy cold they are very good and the way the containers are made you can't really smell the protein Also on the powders I used coconut milk from fresh and easy and I liked the creaminess kind of Like a milk shake I'm gonna make some Caldo de res ( beef stew ) for the family today and blend some of the veggies with the broth and that'll be my dinner... Keep up the good work mind over matter keep yourself busy and just think that the more you loose will affect the numbers right after surgery atleast that is what keeps me going Best of luck Michelle
  15. chicken is never good, even skinless, on the mushies phase in that you can get stuck and pb. Some doctors even put it on the list of "can not be used as a mushie." You can even have problems with it when you are on solids. I could get most Proteins down at about 5-6 weeks out without pain, even steak and ground beef. However, chicken and salmon where especially hard and stuck easily. There is something about the consistency that does not make them pass easily through the pouch. However once you are on solids, if you eat them with something else they go down easier. I started eating salmon with a little yogurt mixed with cucumber and dill and it works well. When I eat chicken, I have a bite or two of veggies or something else first and intersperse it with the rest of my meal.

    Best foods to introduce first?

What does your surgeon recommend? Mine suggested mashed potatoes and ff gravy, Greek yogurt, refried beans... The potatoes were odd, but she had me use boxed, add protein' powder and I was only allowed 1-3 Tb per day with more gravy than potato.
  17. OneHotMama...Thank you for your suggestion. I will look into it. I also thought about the yogurt drinks. Tomorrow I am going to take some of the stuff the doctor had me take preop. Just 1/2 a dose. It was very mild and maybe that will kick start me. I am a classroom teacher and just went back to work today. I would take it tonight but I don't want it to kick in during a time when I can't leave the classroom. You know I love this website...Such great information and such great people.

    Is This Normal?

im not havin any pain....i had a fill a nonth ago, drank the glass of water and was fine, went home and had half a glass of iced tea and ended up vomiting for 2 hrs!! then when i laid down to sleep, felt like i was choking! after 2 days, that feeling went away, but still wasnt able to eat anything!! a week went by,and i was able to hold down a little....its gotten better but still not great... my typical day...coffee in morning, greek yogurt at about 10,cup of noodle soup at 1230,and i havent been able to eat anything else after lunch...i thought that maybe thats what being in the green zone was....but im eating nothing and not losing either,so i figure i must be too tight! the 1st 3 days after my fill,i lost 11 lbs,but that was because i couldnt eat or drink anything without it coming back up! i havent lost a lb since!!
  21. Well I'm 5 days out and made it through Christmas and it's gatherings!! I didn't cheat once and in so proud of myself! I stuck to this full liquid diet. I have my first week follow up appointment with my surgeon on Monday and I'm hoping he moves me on to mushies!! I wanted so bad to eat crab cakes, mashed potatoes, and dressing but I couldn't. What did your doctors move you to after your first week? I'm eating pudding and yogurt but I'm getting hungry between meals and I have a small fill. Like 1.5 cc. I hope everyone had a great Christmas!!
  22. Hello everyone. I'm at day 5 of being banded and moved from clear liquid to full liquid. Doc may clear me for soft foods on Friday, not sure yet. I am tired of my protein shakes, cottage cheese, and creamy soups. (I don't tolerate yogurt well at all.) I really want to have something like cream of wheat, grits, oatmeal...*something* with substance. Mashed potatoes/yams? Something! Any one have suggestions on alternatives?
  23. @Creekimp13 - Thank your daughter for me! This is excellent advice. My body seems to have self corrected finally. I've been eating greek yogurt and probiotics, taking meds and added a little more of the BRAT diet (basic foods for the body to breakdown - Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast - so basic carbs) and it seems to be helping.
  24. Only advice I can offer is to build good populations of good gut bugs. My kiddo is a microbiology major who just went to a lecture on gut microbiota and fecal transplant (yep, this is a thing) and she was telling me that a lot of chronic constipation and diarrhea issues can be related to out of balance gut microbiota. How can you improve your gut bugs? Eat quality dietary fiber... 30g a day for the gals. More for the guys. (obviously, discuss this with your doctor) Fiber feeds the most beneficial gut bugs and helps them re-establish healthy populations when they've been wiped out by antibiotics, or dealing with the new conditions of a modified gut. Here's a cool list: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Also, try to eat cultured and fermented foods...yogurt, miso, pickles, sauerkraut, kefir, cheeses. The key...she says...is not quantity...it's diversity. Don't overdo portions, but mix up the variety a lot. Just a little bite of each kind of thing adds up to benefits.
  25. I was sleeved Feb 8 Tuesday and have to admit is was much worse than I thought. I started at 250 lbs at 5'9" .. BMI of 37. Still in a lot of pain and highly restricted - haven't left house and don't plan it. Trouble sleeping ... feel SO SWOLLEN and BLOATED ... and definately feel HUNGY!? REALLY HUNGRY!!!!!!!! I am drinking lots ...staying hydrated .... taking it easy .... BUT WANT A CHEESEBURGER SO BAD! Had no liquid diet pre-op ... so I am on Day 5 .. have tried variety .. broths, cream Soups, Protein shakes, jello's, drinkable yogurt , frozen pops, lots of fluids .... what is going on? Trying to get protein in to fill me up ... maybe 10 grams a day at this point - only 5 days out .. but??? And really hurting .... sore belly .. tender abdomin ... been rough. I had read so many pleasant recovery stories that I really thought it would be different - easier I guess post -op. Your thoughts? Thanks!
