  1. Not sure how to advise. Helping you to eat smaller portions is kind of the whole point of surgery. What were your expectations? As for the portions I can eat it depends on the density food. Solid Protein like chicken or beef I can only eat about 1/2 cup. But I can eat a whole cup of veggies or Greek yogurt or soup. Slider foods like chips, Cookies, popcorn, Peanut Butter, ice cream, certain fruits and even Protein shakes I could eat almost limitless amounts of. But "choosing" to eat like a small bird is what has made me successful.
  2. This is a great topic and until you posted it, I never real put much though in to it. I would now categorize myself as extreme restriction because most of the time, I do not eat what I prepare for my family. I am five months post op and still have a shake every morning and eat mostly cottage cheese, babybels, pb and apples and greek yogurt. I cannot tolerate most meats, so that is a huge downfall for me. But there are days (like yesterday) where I made my son and his friend chicken nuggets and tater tots and I ate two tater tots, because like you and many others I refuse to gain any of the weight I have lost back, I have put waaaay too much time and effort into this process. The two "meals" I have made and enjoyed are the ricotta bake and a cauliflower mac & cheese. Other than that, I eat the same things day after day.
  3. My "go-to" sweet fixes are either a Greek Yogurt with chopped pecans and coconut flakes stirred in (feels like a real desert ), or a sugar-free fudgecicle. Neither are cupcakes or donuts, but they help. I ate peanut MM's at the movies yesterday and felt so nauseous and sick, I didn't really enjoy the movie. I'm wondering if you would have the same reaction if you actually ate all that sugar? I was reminded yesterday that that stuff does not make me feel good!

HELP! (No, it's not really THAT dramatic????)

My new go to for a sweet is yogurt with sugar-free caramel to torani sauce. It's like a Sunday without ice cream.
  5. you could also check into Upcal D. It's a powdered calcium citrate that you can mix into food. It's kind of sweet, so I usually mix it into yogurt. Supposedly you can mix it into beverages, too, but it doesn't dissolve all that well - I have to keep shaking the drink before I take a swig....otherwise, the powder just collects on the bottom of my blender cup. I actually take calcium citrate in several forms - usually Upcal D in my morning yogurt, a couple of tablets at work (around lunch time), and a Bariatric Advantage chew or Calcet Creamy bite after dinner as my "dessert". I figure I'll absorb at least one of these forms....
  6. I went to the doctor yesterday to see if I could get a little more filling. It turns out that my esophagus has stretched and that is why I can eat so much and not feel satisfied. She drained my band and put me on a liquid diet for a month. Bummer. She said that the esophagus should go back to normal. I guess I needed a wake-up call, because I was binging so badly. Even though it was small amounts, I was eating all day and night. I am so hooked on sweets. I feel like I'm constantly trying to adjust my body with food. I want something sweet, then I want something like crackers, bread, or nuts - then something sweet, then on and on and on - the circle never ends. Sometimes I scream at myself in my head, "Stop eating !!!!!" I always say that I can't. But I think I have been using negative self-talk in that area. I'm good at positive self-talk in other areas of my life, and it truly works. I'm going to practice positive self-talk with regulating my food intake now. I realize that everything you say or do is a choice, and saying "I can't" is choosing "not to." I have been so disappointed that my band did not seem to make any difference for me. If I had the will-power to do everything that is expected of me with my band, I would not have been fat in the first place. I guess the band has helped some, because I've lost 40 pounds over 4 years. That's 40 less than I have to lose now. That's positive. I did good today; I have had only my 30g Protein drinks. I can have Jello or yogurt tonight. Thanksgiving will be hard, so I'm going to enjoy it at home alone this time and enjoy some movies. I'd like to know how some of y'all are doing now. Success stories ......... problems .......????

@@anewme2015 you sound like you are coming along nicely. I had cottage cheese today and loved it. It is interesting how are taste change. I am not feeling yogurt right now. I Don't go back to work until the 16th. We went to the mall today and man I am feeling it. I still have so much soreness and discomfort. I wore jeans and the button hits my belly button incision OMG it hurt. My jeans are loose thought. We went to Red Lobster. I got. 5oz Salmon with mashed potatoes and brocolli. I ate about 2oz of salmon a few bites of potatoes and 1 brocolli spear. I shared my plate with my 17 month old and my husband always eats my food lol. The biscuits OMG looked good but honestly I do not even feel tempted. I am still not getting 3 meals a day. It is just hard.
  8. Are you sure you can have meats this early? Most of us are on pureed foods or at least soft foods only at 4 weeks. Turkey would have been way too hard for me to digest at 2 weeks. You HAVE to get Protein in. What kind of shakes have you tried? Premier Protein ready made shakes are really good - not gritty. And know that early on, everything is hard to get down. You need to try shakes again. Alternatively, at the very least try some protein powder mixed with stuff. For example, I use Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate (which is only 10% lactose and 30g protein). I mix half a scoop of vanilla powder into flavored greek yogurt or half a scoop of chocolate powder with Jello sugar free Chocolate pudding cup. I also ate hummus mixed with unflavored protein powder. And pimento cheese mixed with unflavored powder. Oh and fat free refried Beans with shredded low fat cheese on top. (I ate that one a lot and still do at 5 months out.) Hope that helps!!
  9. No as I can't stand the taste of yogurt ???? but these pills seem to be helping a lot.
  10. Karl, You shouldn't have any issues with these and they should help get your issues solved. Are you eating any yogurt post surgery?

No idea what you have in the house or whether you're willing to hit the store. Yogurt, plain or flavored with more fruit added, maybe SF applesauce. If plain yog & applsc, add sweetener to taste, a shake of cinnamon and a coupla drops of vanilla. Or flavor up any yogurt with complementary seasonings/extracts. Cottage cheese, if you prefer. (For eons I thought of cottage as something to eat only when I was ill, but, after banding, added it to my snack rotation.) SF fudgesicle. I think it's the brand "Popsicle" that makes me happy. They also make ices pops that are packed in boxes that look very similar, so look before you leap. Put a banana in the freezer; eat as much as suits you. Same for seedless grapes. Do you have SF syrups, such as Torani? A pot of coffee sweetened/flavored with the chocolate flavor or whichever you like. If choc or vanilla or similar, put some cinnamon in the basket with the ground coffee. This often satisfies me. I've been told that evap FF milk, if put in freezer and cold enough, will whip up; can't vouch for it myself. A bit o' PB with a spoon or two of the Torani and some banana slices, all mushed up, is one of my fave treats. So much that a small amt satisfies. I've been profligate for so long that I can't recall all of my old tricks. IF anything else comes to mind, I'll be back. You are honor-bound to report back with whatever you end up having.
  12. How about some sugar free pudding. I make the sugar free instant and add protein powder to it. The nectar vanilla bean. Then after it's set instead of cool whip free I add nonfat plain greek yogurt. It is my sweet tooth fix. I like the lemon.

    3 months out...

@@Veronica_mm I have random "episodes" all the time. Last week I had a small turkey burger, with Swiss, avocado and some saute'd shrooms and had no problem eating all 3.5 ounces. Two days later, I made a little bowl of chili, with some plain Greek yogurt and shredded cheese on top, then two bites in I felt ill and ended up forcing everything back up. I have had that same "meal" a bunch of times since surgery. Last night I had some cottage cheese with a slice of soft peach, 2-3 bites in wasn't feeling it, it too came back up. This morning I had scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, salsa and a quarter of WW toast, no problems, none at all. Really weird and random. If you were unable to keep down fluids, I would be more concerned. And that is why I have never worried about having some issues with keeping food down. I have always been able to get in my Water, my milk and my Protein shakes. I guess it is just par for the course.
  14. I ate a lot of cottage cheese and Greek yogurt during that phase. I also picked up a tiny bit of fish from the Whole Foods hot bar to try.

    Pureed foods struggle.

I'll jump all over canned tuna but canned chicken isn't something I can go near. How are you with Greek yogurt ? There are so many flavors of that on the market that it'd offer lots of variety.

    Pureed foods struggle.

Get a usb coffee warmer. It will change your life. I pretty much did Soup, broth, ricotta, hummus and yogurt for those 2 weeks. Tried refried Beans. Wasn't a fan. Odd because I love beans.

Hey everyone! Well i am still having some issues getting in all the liquid and Protein i need, i think a big part of it is i am still always so sleepy and end up napping or sleeping to long and its not easy to play " catch up" . I have found that i am tolerating things very well so far. I have had strained tomato Soup and my unjury just came in the mail today so i will be adding that to the Soups i have from now on. I have had SMALL amounts of Greek yogurt with no adverse affects, I tried the unjury with some crystal lite as well and I like it. I am doing OK getting in Water itself but i need to start measuring it i find i am just sipping it from my glass and i don't rightly know how much i end up sipping. Other then that, i am almost completely off the pain medication, and i am really looking foreword to the puree stage on Wednesday. I experienced a small amount of dumping when i tried certain Vitamins but other then that no vomiting. i was 319 when i went in to surgery and i am 304 right now.
  18. I am just over 6 months out. My typical day is breakfast: scrambled egg and salsa with one piece of Canadian bacon. Snack: greek yogurt snack 2: turkey pepperoni with cheese Lunch: grilled chicken with veggies or soup Dinner: lean meat with veggies. I do have some carbs: mashed potatoes, crackers, popcorn, etc but in limited quantities. I can pretty much eat anything but in VERY limited quantities. I don't know what sliming is, but I have never gotten sick. I get full really quickly though. Sweets are difficult. If I partake it is VERY small.

    Egg issues anyone?

I have had eggs twice since surgery. The first time I was able to eat about 1/2 an egg and I was stuffed. The next time, I had a whole egg over easy. You don't have to eat eggs, if you have issues with them avoid them. I don't like yogurt so I don't eat. There is no reason to force yourself to eat something you don't like or aren't comfortable. I can understand the desire to try because early on we have a limited number of things we can but for me, since I can eat so little, eating something I don't like is basically torture. I didn't do all this to torture myself.

@ -- definitely happy to share the FULL story!! almost 3 weeks post op and i have to say that i think i've been VERY lucky so far, so i'm not really the best person to give the full scope of what recovery can be like. a lot of other people who got sleeved the same time as me are having a much harder time, so i'd recommend reading the different forums (for example there's one for people sleeved 10/14, 10/19, etc.) to get a sense of how people progress in their recovery. for me, the 2 days in the hospital were pretty tough. i had a lot of pain the first day and was CRAZY thirsty, the second day i had nausea and struggled to drink the required amount. the first week i felt generally ok but just very very tired - lots of naps. around 1 week post op i had a crazy allergic reaction -- big red circles around each of my incision sites that itched like CRAZY. i felt like i was going to claw my skin off!!! no consensus on what the allergen was - maybe the surgical glue, maybe the dried blood inside, but in any case it made for a rough, sleepless couple days. i haven't had really any problems getting down Protein or Water or (just this week) cottage cheese/yogurt/apple sauce so that's good. and the weight has been coming off fast and steady. i know there is a long road ahead still -- i will have stalls and maintenance is something i have never once succeeded at, so i know that will be a whole separate adjustment. but i already feel amazing. truly. my sleep apnea has clearly gone away since i am WIDE AWAKE at work for the first time in years. i can feel the lost weight when i walk, there's just a lightness that feels awesome. and the depression that pushed me to do the surgery in the first place is easing up in a major major way. life just seems very bright! one thing i keep reminding myself of is that i have lost all the weight in the past (with doctor-supervised Protein shake diets) and as soon as i was "done" (met goal), i just stopped with the program. didn't continue getting support from the doctors or keeping up with group sessions or therapy. and so i gained it all back and then some both times. so while i am totally basking in my current success, i'm trying to remind myself that this is a different game -- a PERMANENT change, vs. a couple months of shakes. ok that was a very long-winded rant. i will definitely keep you all updated - its nice to be able to share progress here. i haven't had any negative experiences in other forums but i would hesitate to talk numbers given where other people are at and where they started.

    How much can you eat?

Until 2 months out, I was only allowed 1-2 Tbsp of food. Now at almost 3 months, some things I can eat 1/4 cup of. chicken I can eat very little of. Ground beef I can eat almost a 1/4 cup, same with refried Beans, and I can eat 2 eggs over easy, but only 1 scrambled. And Yogurt tastes tooooo sweet to me so I can't eat it.

    Daily Carb Count

At just shy two months post-op, I don't count carbs because my focus is on Proteins first. I drink plenty of milk, eat yogurts, puddings and Nut Thins, Wheat Thins, 34 Degree crackers and the occasional Protein bar. My carb count in the very least is 40-50 grams a day. I lose weight every week and meet my protein/fluid and Vitamin goals daily. Dr. Sprunger told me not worry about counting carbs or calories or measuring or weighing for at least the first six months. Focus on proteins, fluids and eat until full. Small bites, chew well and stay hydrated.

Official August thread! Where are you guys?

Been about six weeks since my last update, so... Stalled out again in mid-October but started losing weight again the week before Halloween. I'm basically down 49 pounds now since August 10th. Went to the chiropractor for my lower back issues, and have been seeing him 2-3 times per week since early October. My back is feeling better and better. I now feel confident I can actually walk long distances without having to stop and sit down every 100 steps or so. Not too much trouble with foods, but I stick to what I know works for me. Some issues I had include chicken wings. I baked a handful a few weeks ago. Was only able to eat two before I had that "pain" in the pouch. Wasn't too much longer that I purged what I had eaten. I documented an issue with a salad at Chipotle about a week or so ago as well. Took a handful of bites, and it came back up not much later. Not sure I've experienced dumping yet. I had a "different" experience this last weekend. Was visiting with friends, and we went to a mall. We stopped at a yogurt shop, and I had a very small cup with strawberries, cherries, and pineapple. About 15 minutes after I finished it, I had to run to the bathroom with diarrhea and an increased heart rate that lasted for about 10 minutes. Not sure that's dumping though since I felt fine after my heart rate came down with no intervention from me. Had to go buy a new light jacket for these "cooler" months since the one I had bought last year when I was at my heaviest looked way too big on me. Same thing with jeans. I haven't gone to buy new shirts yet, but the ones I have look way too big on me unless I tuck them in. So all's good. A little disappointed with the stalls, but all of my weight loss to date has been with little to no exercise due to my lower back issues. With that going away, I think I can start doing more walking and maybe running which should help with the weight loss.
  24. I could eat cottage cheese, yogurt, ground meat (except red meat), etc starting on day three. I had zero pain, nausea or vomiting. I've seen enough posts from people who are miserable during the first few weeks post-op on clears and full liquids, and I never felt deprived. I was nervous going in, because it was so liberal compared to others, but having been through it, I'm happy for the plan I had! I actually think the strangest part about his plan is that he can have veggies that early. There is so little room for anything, I'm surprised he can eat anything that isn't a source of Protein. ~*~ Find me on YouTube: Trisha's Sleeve Story ~*~

    Not tolerating whey protein...

Hi! I'm new here and had the same problem happen to me. I went the vegan route for Protein powder and mix SunWarrior with juice Plus with almond milk (fruit and PB2 too) and feel so much better. I can tolerate greek yogurt, cottage cheese and regular cheese, but Premier drinks and whey powder just make me feel horrible.
