One Month Post-Op...I have questions!!
2muchfun replied to amsaw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most patients lose 0-30 lbs the first few weeks but once we go back to solids or mushies it's easy to gain some of that weight back. It's no biggie since most of the weight we lose the first month is Fluid retained in our fat cells. Many of us went through Bandster Hell after the first two weeks. The portal/stoma is wide open usually and this makes it easy to consume lots of food. For some reason, the hunger cravings kick in big time and it's a difficult time to push through so gaining weight is common. It's a good idea to measure/weigh your food at this time and try to eat healthy to avoid gaining weight. This is just like being on a diet till you get the fill/adjustment that helps you to feel satiety for 4 hours. -
Congrats on your surgeries, ladies! The first month or so can be tough, but believe me it gets easier! Fills are different for everyone. It took three fills for me to get to "green" and I'm one of those bandsters that has lost my appetite all together. You'll find our experiences are different but we all have a common goal...To lose weight and get healthy. Best Wishes!

To splurge or not to splurge
OKSleever replied to dfdscott's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had several "food funerals" and don't regret them. I actually didn't even gain weight with them; something about having my eyes on the prize kept my portions in check anyway. Good luck, whatever you decide -
Does PBing only happen if you overindulge?
LargeMediumSmall replied to BandedKitten's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I so agree with your BMI quotes. In my avatar photo I was actually 190 and no one believed it. I am now at 175 and between a size 10 and 12. I'm 5'6" and swear I have lead for bones. I know I could shave off a few more pounds but the BMI index in the 140-something pound range would be almost impossible for me to attain without looking completely sick. Even when I was in he military I never made weight specs. They always had to do a BMI calculation and I passed every time, but going straight by the scale, no way. I now go by clothing size, not scale number. I'd like to see 20 more pounds go but I think that's all I can do. I've got an appointment with my doc next month to schedule a tummy tuck as I think there are several pounds of loose skin that is part of the problem. Everyone has to find their own happy weight. I think mine is about 155. -
Yes my stomach gurgles which is the same for anyone with gastric surgery, no i dont have reflux or burping unless food is stuck which is rarely .. Its my choice if i chose to put the weight back on, i am in control of what i eat and when, same with anyone who has had gastric surgery. The faster route is a bypass of course but with greater risks from surgery and complications so use the seminar to build up as much info as u can to make an informed decision as to what will be right for you as a busy mum

Anyone else sleeved on or around Feb 27th 2010?
Connie replied to tiaras's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband and I both had VSG done in Feb. I had mine on the 18th, he had his 4 days later. We are both doing pretty well. He has lost almost he same amount of weight as me. I am having a little more difficultly with food getting stuck. Working on smaller bites, avoiding breads mostly that cause the problem. Has worked well to have done the surgery at the same time, especially since we no longer have children at home. We are watching the amount of carbs we are taking in, and so far haven't had a problem with stalls. -

I had to adjust my cpap within the first two weeks, as well. (I couldn't fully exhale.) I adjusted it again after five weeks (I was waking up to burp - swallowing air). I was on a 10 setting, and am now on a 7. Getting off this machine is my number one goal of weight loss. I am grateful for the progress! I went to youtube to learn how to adjust it myself. I see my neurologist / sleep specialist at the end of the month, and hope to have a sleep study by the end of the year (since I've met my out of pocket) to render this machine useless! A girl can dream... -
I'm 12 days out and I would be thrilled. I don't want to not be able to eat something. I want to not be able to eat very much of it. I don't think I really ever had a problem eating all the wrong things (although sometimes I did). My problem is that before I could stuff myself with the biggest Mexican food dinner they had and eat it all. And I would make Weight Watchers friendly dinners and eat one serving but then find that I wasn't satisfied and eat 2 or 3 more servings. I also haven't had any problem eating anything yet (although I'm still on liquids). I have had tomato basil soup, butternut squash soup, black bean soup and carrot ginger soup so far. Tonight I'm going to try having some cream of chicken. I go back to the doctor on Wednesday and hope to be put on soft foods. I'm gonna have me some eggs, fat free refried black beans and avocado. I can't eat corn tortillas yet but in a few weeks I' have one or two. I want to eat like a normal, skinny person and hopefully my sleeve will help me do that.

Revision weight loss
GreenTealael replied to GotItDoneInHarlem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
* Bursts In: Am I late? No, Good * I converted from VSG to RNY at my goal weight. Initially i lost a about 10lbs easily but worked (ate 😂) to get back to my normal goal. It is possible to maintain if you are diligent. If i eat weight loss mode - I lose, if I indulge just a little every now and again- I maintain, if i go overboard - I gain. As always talk to your Surgeon and come up with a realistic plan 💚 Oh BTW , GERD is gone 🙌 -
3 days into the Pre - Op diet
btrieger replied to Countrychic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks but don't be impressed until I can actually keep it off. I'm sure that you and everyone else reading this could lose the weight if they put their mind to it. Unfortunately, if you are like me, you run out of steam or lose your train of thought without noticing and gain it back. This is going to be my third time losing over 100 pounds and the previous 2 times I gained it back even faster than I lost it with interest. That is so much more depressing than never having lost it at all. Hopefully if the band doesn't prevent me from gaining it all back, it will at least slow down my weight gain enough so I have time to notice and I can turn things around before gaining it all back. -
Still not Fixed Up, ready to cater my Own Pity Party, I am losing much hopefulness about the whole Proceeding. And yesterday by accident? I never lost conciousness during the attempt, didn't hurt, had numbing medicine sprayed in the back of my throat that you gargle and then swollow down, stated I would be going to sleep-*- *well I laid there and watched on the monitor just like Dr Noria did. Asked the 2 other doctors, the nurse and most of all, Dr Noria? Did you guys realize I remained awake? Dr Noria got a look on her face like a child caught taking a swipe off the top of a freshly frosted cake and licking her fingers **Changed the subject, said" I dialated you to 10 mm", sounds good until you realise before first attempt I was at 9 mm.Progress IDK, do you? And I am at 7+weeks, a point where many, if not, all of my Surgery Day twins, Sleeve or RNY, are on purees and transitioning to soft and regular foods. Yeah ***I know we ALL make our journey toward final health, final size and weight goal, and a Bee-You-tee-full Future but OMG do I even have one? Someday I will be the scrawniest, sad-looking old broad seen, carting a thermos of bone broth or something similar. And watching the rest of the WLS community bouncing by happily. I expected hard, difficult but Mount Everest, Mount Denali even Kilimanjaro all in one, Nope didn't book for that?🎢🌆

Help! I have stalled majorly!
coops replied to ajwatson11's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello... the whole stall thing really sucks and is very discouraging! I keep getting mini ones and I am only 10 weeks post op, I find them frustrating and annoying but I try to look at it this way; I haven't gained... BUT... what a fantastic weight loss you have had already! I bet you are looking and feeling great and that makes a huge difference in itself. Do you want to lose another 29lb or do you need to? Sounds daft I know, but that might help the positive train of thought???? :crying: Another positive... when you do reach your target weight, look how easy you will maintain it....????? :tongue_smilie: Just an idea ... what about Fluid? Are you drinking plenty of Water? Especially if you have increased your exercise?! Hope you see some movement soon, keep us posted x -
Help! I have stalled majorly!
coops replied to ajwatson11's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Ainsley, No problem, glad to have helped... it is easier for me to think outside the box and be more objective... I am trying to focus on the positive stuff as my weight loss is slow and inconsisitent and I just feel that looking at what I have done as opposed to what I haven't done is much better! I think, and I am no expert, that the Water thing might be your key... just drink as much as you can and see what happens... let me know how you get on... I know it really helps me. In my (humble) opinion, now that you have no medical issues, you have already reached your goal!! What an acheivement that is for you... I know my main goal is to be healthy in this body; to be able to be fit and active is as important as what the scales read or what clothes size I can wear! As regards medical weight, I feel it is very personal to everyone; my medical weight is so low, I can't even imagine what I would look like there (119lb) and I have never been that weight in my adult life!! So, I have set myself two goal weights; the first being reasonable and the second being ultimate!! But as long as I don't gain I will be pretty much happy... Let me know how you are doing xx -
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your daily protein requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as protein shakes. Many people experience problems eating and drinking after surgery. Two of the medical conditions that can contribute to this problem is the development of strictures and ulcers. So if you find that your problem is extreme (such as constant vomiting) then I would recommend working this problem out with your surgery team. That is why they are there. The transition to hard foods (such as chicken and steak) can be rather rough. As a result I have relied on softer foods (such as high protein chili and soups). I have included a few recipes at the end of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Help! I have stalled majorly!
ajwatson11 replied to ajwatson11's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks so much coops! Everything you are saying makes a lot of sense. . . Technically for my height and weight I still fall into the "overweight" category so medically speaking I probably need to loose a few more pounds, but that being said I don't have any weight related medical problems (anymore) so I guess health wise, no I don't need to lose more weight. I just want to. I do feel better and more energized. I am thankful for the surgery and the weight I have already lost, it's just frustrating when you thought/wanted to lose more and all of a sudden you stop losing. I am probably not drinking enough, in fact i know i'm not. I have improved, but have been unable to get in the full 64oz a day (even 32 is sometimes hard for me). This was something I had a difficult time with even before surgery. Thanks for all your encouraging words. New plan: - continue on vegetarian ways - increase Protein and fluids - keep exercising - try not to be discouraged Love you guys. -
For Guys Who Are At Least 4 Months Post Op
Mr_Worm posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Any other guys out there finding out you can eat and eat things without issue BUT you're still losing weight? Anyone else doing no carb like me? I'm living off of meat, wheat thins, cashews, and right now I"m munching on some BBQ Pork skins (who knew they were high in Protein, low fat, low cal?) I never had any issues with moving back into solid foods after being sleeved Jan 12th. I probably advanced much more quickly than what I was suppose to but I never had any pains or food intolerance's. Hell I can drink and eat together to some degree and can chug a bit still. Maybe I'm not mentally realizing that even though I'm eating more frequently, the quantity and the food choice is totally different than pre op? Anyone else noticing this? I'm still losing on average of 5 pounds a week like this and I'm right at 100 pounds lost since Jan. W -
If you think you can do it on your own maybe you should have another go on your own? I know for me, after decades of dieting I knew I couldn't do it on my own. I'd lost all optimism in weight loss.

I am a smoker to... Its hard to quit a hand to mouth addiction like smoking when u cant put food hand to mouth. I habe been on Chantix for a couple of months but I was only taking it once a day,.it helped me cut back a lot. 2 weeks ago my mom, a smoker of 40.yrs, was diagnosed with cancer of.the kidney. Kidney cancer is linked to smoking, I know I was shocked to, & its also hereditary. So none the less I increased it to 2 times a day, like ur supposed to take it, & I am down to 1~2 cigs a day. Fact is u wont be sucessful with quitting unless u r.totally prepared for it. U have to do it for urself! Just like getting the lap band to help u loose weight & be healthy... Only u can make those decisions... I have sucessfully quit in the past, for 4 months, but for.some silly reason I started again. I rember how good I felt & how nice it was to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without being winded! Its well worth it, its just hard to get there Hang in there everyone, who is trying to quit that is

So I'm still a bit nervous about surgery on Monday but had a couple of small successes today. First, we had a catered retirement lunch today for one of my colleagues. The folks who work directly for me know about my upcoming surgery but most everyone else in the office doesn't. So I came down to lunch with my cup of broth and bottle of Water and settled in. When asked if I was eating, I simply said I had some test coming up and this is just bad timing, no hassle and I bet everyone thinks I'm going for a colonoscopy (lol). Second, I took the stairs back to my office - 2 long flights - and realized that I wasn't out of breathe when I got to the top. The weight I've lost so far and the regular walking is already paying dividends. Thanks for listening.

Very Good! Every one is different. Just work on your self & do not compare your weight loss to others. The Sleeve is great!

Hi to everyone here. I've been reading the posts here and working up the nerve to post my intentions. I am 59 years old today and have had a weight problem all my life. I have been underweight, overweight, obese, and morbidly obese. I am currently 285 lbs after being at an all time high of 350 lbs. I did loose down to 240 lbs, but back up again to 285 lbs. I know this yo-yoing back and forth is not healthy and I truely want to do this banding procedure to get my health back. I was taking medication for type 2 diabetes while at 350 lbs and after loosing down to 240 lbs I no longer needed the medication. I'm afraid that it won't be long till I'm back on the meds. How do I get this procedure started? I have Capital Blue Cross PPO ins. in Pennsylvania(Lehigh Valley area). I haven't approached my PCP yet but I do have an appt. scheduled in July. Any and all help from you all here would be deeply appreciated. Thanks to you all in advance for you concideration.:cursing:

Hi! Well a good place to start is to look up all of the bariatric surgeons in your area, then give them all a call. Most of them will require you to attend a seminar or watch a video about the procedure before you can go any further in the process. Then you will have to fill out an information packet about all of your health issues, previous weight loss attempts, medication, etc. You can then make an appointment with them, and usually they will have a financial counselor who can help you with getting insurance approval or getting financed. I would suggest that you go through this process with several surgeons to see which program feels the most comfortable for you, and which surgeon you like best (eventually you will need to research their statistics including number of procedures performed, complication rates, and read patient reviews). The whole process can seem a little daunting, but most places will help you through the whole process. If you cannot get insurance approval, there are a number of surgeons in ::gasp:: Mexico who are very experienced and have excellent stats. They offer the surgery at a fraction of the cost of American surgeons, but have a much more limited aftercare program. It all depends on your needs and preferences. I am still a newbie here too, but there are loads of people on this site who are very knowledgeable. Definitely you are in the right place, keep asking questions, and good luck in your journey! You are taking the first steps toward a new healthier life...congratulations!!!

Five Months Out With Dr. Ponce De Leon And In Onderland What A Joy!
kansasgirl posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Okay i posted this in the success forum too but wanted to put it in the self pay to let any of you know especially self payers that this surgery is totally worth it and it works so well!!! I could never have imagined i would be down so much in so little time. I was scared to go to Mexico when i first started researching it but was amazed with my experience... i loved my doctor and my coordinator can't say enough great things about them!! I just want you to know that this will be the best decision you have ever made for yourself.. life is great on the other side!! and yes i didn't spell check my video.. i spelled my doctor's name wrong lol...If anyone needs any advice on dr. Ponce de leon please ask away!!! I love my sleeve it's been five months since surgery and I can't believe how much I've changed since then. I'm including a video i made for my five months but i looked back on the first videos i made and i cannot believe how much i had let myself go.. it is so apparent.. but never was when i was that size. My highest weight was 277 my Surgery weight was 261 and i am now 199 went from a tight 24 to a size 16.. this is totally amazing to me in five short months.. I thank god and praise him for allowing me to finally have this surgery and to be where i am today. My sleeve has worked amazingly for me.. There's nothing i can't eat... just things i won't eat to sabotage myself.. I've stayed away from bread and Pop totally, but anything else in small amounts My sleeve has never been irritated by any food and I've never thrown up thankfully since surgery. I still keep in contact with my doctor and coordinator and they are thrilled with my results. If you are thinking about this surgery find anyway you can to get it done!!! IT works and it's amazing!!
