What do you consider "Starting Weight"?
Sunnyway replied to Pete-TheTimeIsNow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use my highest weight. I lost 24 during COVID on my own, then regained 10 before I started with the bariatric clinic. That high figure represents the beginning of my journey, not the weight when I started at the clinic. -

I use the weight I was when I decided to pursue WLS because that's when I started my weight loss journey. My highest recorded weight was actually in 2017, but I didn't start my weight loss journey until 2019 so I use the weight I was in 2019 rather than 2017 (i.e I use 389 instead of 392) because I had too much stuff going on in 2017 and wasn't focusing on weight loss at all (I had brain surgery in 2017 and my sister also had a really traumatic miscarriage when she was at 19 weeks). -

Since my surgeon's clinic doesn't use the two-week liver shrinking diet, giving patients a narrow range of weight loss in a specific time period instead, I count my starting weight as my first visit to their office. -

I lost weight prior to surgery so I use my weight on my first surgery appt - which was my highest weight. -
Wow! That's really low calorie. By 6 months out I was expected to hit 1000-1200 per day. These days a "high day" is 1300 cal and a low day is 1000. I find if you eat too little, your body stalls faster too because it thinks you are starving. I try to vary each day by at least 100 calories when I am paying attention and actually loosing. So glad to hear you are going down again this week. That's wonderful! And yes, I agree. On a longer stall, I have totally slipped into the mindset of "Oh well, guess that's it for weight loss. At least I weigh less than I have since I was 19!" I mean, I wouldn't even mind stopping loosing weight at 180. At my height that's still way too much but 102lbs down would be such an amazing thing regardless.

How long for hospital weight to drop off?
ShoppGirl replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn’t gain any weight while in the hospital. But then again I was clearly not overly hydrated as most people are because I had to go back and get fluids. My clinic did tell me not to weigh myself for the first two weeks though and I think that was probably because of fluid and inflammation causing weight gain. -

I use my weight at the start of the preop diet. Which was also my highest weight so it’s kinda an easy one for me. -
Revision surgery: Why will this time be different?
EllieV replied to KSW22's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am wondering the same thing myself... excellent question. I just wanted to say that I am in the EXACT SAME boat. I had a sleeve in 2016, lost just shy of 100lbs and my lowest recorded weight was 199. I then went through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment including many surgeries, and this past summer I was back up to the exact weight as you - 267. I have been working closely with my doctor and am now down to 243. I am scheduled for a revision this December mainly for GERD, but hoping that it will help me with losing some extra weight, too. I just wanted to remind you that you are not alone! -

I use the weight I was the day I started the pre-op diet (in my case, just clear fluids 3 days before surgery) My highest weight was 20 years ago... around 20-25lbs more that my SW. I was heading in that direction; and I never want to see that one again. -
Am I done losing after 5 months?
JDLane replied to brooketw's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can't offer assurances but I can commiserate. I was sleeved 5/12 and am very much in the same boat. My weight has remained pretty steadily the same for the last 3 weeks approximately. So frustrating especially because I'm soo close to being under 200lbs. And similarly I'm feeling less restriction and getting hungry more often. I'm trying to eat more slowly as that really helps with feeling the restriction. But I'm mostly just trying to stay on course and hope my body will eventually move forward. I'd hate to think I hit the end of the road at only 5 months. I see my surgeon in a few weeks for a 6 month follow up so perhaps he will have some advice. Good luck! -

Omg, your post just made me realize for the first time that at my highest weight (at the start of my 2 week pre op lquid diet), I actually weighed more than I did at my highest weight when I was pregnant! *mind blown* -

I use the weight at the start of the 2 week pre op liquid diet (which is essentially when I started the drastic change to my eating habits). -

Personally, I use weight at pre-op diet start. But, I also didn't lose weight prior to that, I did the opposite. If I had lost weight during that time, I would probably count that, but also break it out into phases so I can track the evolution. My highest weight ever was quite a bit higher than the start weight I use now, but that was lost previously and not related to this process, so I don't count that. -

I count my starting weight from the day I was diagnosed with diabetes and was referred to a weight loss surgeon. I think it's really a personal choice. For me, I need the encouragement and sense of accomplishment it gives me. I've lost 129lbs total and 83 of that has been since surgery - which 83 is great number, but 129 gives me more internal happiness so I use the 129lbs. -

What do you consider starting weight? Weight at start of Liquid Diet (or any other pre-op diet)? Weight at day of surgery? Weight before you started losing weight? In my case, I reached my high weight (... panicked ) ,and started dieting.. lost 35 lbs.. then while still on my diet, decided to get the surgery. Started liquid diet a week ago, and have lost 12 lbs since then.. Not sure what you all use as your starting weight. Thanks! -
Oh, this book is terrific, too: The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients, by Colleen Cook.

Check out this book and its companions. Its plan is what I intend to follow when I'm back to normal food post-surgery. I've been following this pre-surgery and have lost 50 lbs, This seems to be the most logical and nutritionally sound food plan that I've found. It's not "keto" but there are similarities. Particularly look at the Metabolic Reset (on page 20) if you are stalled. The Author's premise is to eat far more vegetables, unlimited fruit, snack only on these and nuts & seeds, and use animal protein as flavor not as the star of every meal. Matthew Weiner, MD, A Pound of Cure. He's also written The Bariatric Guide and Cookbook, and How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works. I recommend all three books, available in paperback and Kindle. The author is a bariatric surgeon.

How do you deal with people telling you to stop losing weight?
Crick replied to Crick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone. I just got really discouraged when it was my mom, my mentor, and some random lady at the gym all in a period of 3 days. I know I can’t “spot” lose but I’m thinking I will lose more from my belly as it’s been the last place I’ve been losing and it’s sort of deflating from the sides in so I think there is still some more to lose in the center - but we shall see. I never thought I would feel the need to do plastics but honestly so frustrated with how I look that I don’t think I’ll be satisfied otherwise - that’s part of why I’ve been doing weight training so that I can really build up the muscle mass and hopefully that will help with everything. I’ll save the “go nuclear” option in my back pocket. 🤪 -
How long for hospital weight to drop off?
Splenda replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Gastric bypass on Monday morning. Returned home Wednesday afternoon. Thursday morning, stepped on scale and weighed 5 pounds more than I did Monday morning. Wasn't until Saturday that I was below my Monday morning weight. I felt tender/swollen for about 10-14 days after surgery. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't step on a scale until 7 days after surgery (and I do best when I check the scale daily -- I need the daily feedback). -

Yep everyone will have a different result/outcome after their hospital stays. I was one of the ones who lost weight upon my return home, had no gas pain and no visible swelling (but then again, if i did have swelling i probably would not have noticed cuz my stomach was already rounded from my existing fat, lol) I cant be certain of this, but I think the following helped (YMMV): (1) sipping water every 5 mins while i was awake - i set a timer - (i vaguely remember reading somewhere if u keep hydrating regularly your body won’t retain water? I dunno though) … note: i had no probs peeing and did so several times (which was so annoying being hooked up to an IV and a having an achy tum) (2) doing (very slow!) laps of the halls any time wasn’t sleeping (i also read that this helps with gas). Which honestly was exhausting, but i did it anyway. For what its worth, there are probably lots more folks who had a similar experience, but they don’t post much as generally it’s the peeps who have issues that seek advice. Good Luck! ❤️ -

These things... Even if you've never had a weight issue or weight loss surgery, you can't lose weight in one specific place. And, it does look like what you've got there is just loose skin. And... when you are wearing a shirt it doesn't show at all. But I think you may have to learn to live with the comments for the time being unfortunately until as @Arabesque said, people come to learn what you look like now and replace the old you with the new you in their minds. I also want to add that I hope I am as successful as you are!! You're an inspiration! -

I gained 2.4 lbs in the hospital and lost it by the 2nd morning home. I didn't notice any swelling but I was in so much pain I'm not sure I would have noticed it. BTW, the pain was totally manageable by like the fourth day. The only thing that really hurt was getting up from lying down and walking. You've got this!
